American Idol executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, appearing Monday on CNN Headline’s Showbiz Tonight responded to the rumor that Adam Lambert is being considered for a judges spot on the show.

The host asked Nigel if it were true that he was talking to Adam Lambert and Nigel replied:

“I can confirm with you that I have not been speaking to Adam Lambert, but there are going to be lots of names coming up now,” said Nigel. “It’s a bit like…when they were looking for judges for X Factor. Everybody’s name came up. It’s going to be the same with American Idol.”

“Everything’s still up in the air I have to say. Nothing is confirmed.”

Then Nigel quipped, “Hopefully, I’m going to push for Charlie Sheen and Jerry Lewis as judges on American Idol. I’m not sure how far I’ll get with that, but I think that would be fun!”

Adam Lambert told CapitolFM radio in the UK that he would jump at the chance to be an American Idol judge IF he were asked.

LOL.   I didn’t watch the vid, but if he’s name checking Sheen et al he’s being a snarky beotch and I love it.

  • Anonymous

Glad we cleared that rumor up.

  • blackberryharvest

So that pretty much confirms that there WILL be new judges, but just a matter of who…hopefully this will put the Adam rumor to rest though.

One judge I hope they save is Steven.

  • Anonymous

Honestly the only judge I like at all is Jennifer. At least she’s pretty to look at. Randy and Steven are less than useless imo. Though I don’t know if I should get a say since I DVR the show and fast forward though the judges most of the time anyway lol.

I wonder if Lady Gaga would do it. She is friends with both Nigel and Jimmy and she would bring in the unpredictability. Plus she was fabulous when she mentored in Season 10.

““It’s a bit like…when they were looking for judges for X Factor. Everybody’s name came up. It’s going to be the same with American Idol.””

How about, it’s exactly like that? Both shows read from the same handbook – this is from the chapter on Long-Term PR Tactics to Sustain Hype.

I think there ought to be a hologram judge – maybe Groucho Marx?

    That would be different. Heh.

Who is that guy sitting next to Nigel?  I thought it was Durbin for a second.

And that was kind of a non-denial denial.

He can confirm that he hasn’t been speaking to Adam. Interesting.
Also, I’m imagining Nigel cackling whole day yesterday  - free press for Idol. I imagine Adam’s PR is also happy.

LOL….so HE has not been speaking to Adam Lambert…oh Nigel, you are so fun.  Isn’t Nigel’s contract kind of up in the air…in any event, doubt he would be the person making the first contact with any perspective new judge candidates. This is of course, does not put anything to rest but simply keeps the speculation going.

I just hope J-Lo is gone from the panel next year. She’s only there to fuel her career and nothing more.

I love how even after Nigel denies it people are still trying to spin it like he didn’t deny it :P

And Adam would be doing it out of the goodness of his heart? Personally I would prefer judges that would have nothing to gain career wise from doing the show. It prevents them from being honest to the contestants.

  • Anonymous

    AMEN

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

I think they’ll be looking for judges who do have something to gain (career-wise) and will add something special to the show.  With all the new shows, Idol needs something or someone to ignite the fire.  Personally, I think anyone of the three could be replaced.  I just don’t know how Randy fits into the judges’ plans.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Dana-Sidle/100003317515727 Dana Sidle

I’m pretty sure producers (ie Nigel) are the one who are preventing judges from being honest.

  • Anonymous

Yes, I am convinced that they are just puppets. The producers and the network decide who would make a good show, and and Jimmy I. who is marketable. And I am also convinced that they don’t necessarily agree. But in any case, the judges would have very little to do with the decisions.

The only one who had was Simon Cowell, I think, because he was the representative for Sony at the time, but even though, he must have had meetings with the label in order to decide who was deemed marketable, and he may not have had his way then.

  • Karen C

I almost wonder if some of these stories about Idol are given to the press by Nigel.   Seems almost too perfect that it happened on a day where he was doing interviews.

  • Anonymous

It’s like they skipped over the first part of the story, which is whether or not the current three judges will be back.  It seems like that should come before speculation about who will replace them.

“LOL….so HE has not been speaking to Adam Lambert…oh Nigel, you are so fun.”

lol I noticed that too. I wouldn’t be surprised if there has been contact between AI’s “people” and Adam’s “people”, but Nigel can be honest in claiming the HE hasn’t spoken with Adam personally.

ETA: OK, in the E News video, Nigel says that he’s unaware of any talks with Adam about being a judge. Just how much say do the producers of the show have in choosing the judges? They may have input, but do they have the final decision?

  • YankeeFan08

In the E News clip Nigel says he hasn’t met with Adam but added “I don’t know if there’s negotiations going on.”  Why wouldn’t he know? Wouldn’t he be involved in any negotiations with anyone being considered for the job?

  • DragonFly

“I think there ought to be a hologram judge – maybe Groucho Marx?”

Maybe all 3 judges could be holograms–we could change to our favorite “fair judge” images, then all we’d still have to deal with is that darn “voting” problem.  Sounds like a good “virtual realty” idea with a perfect ending for fans.  And…of course, we could extend the experience to give winners the ultimate Adeletype success.  A good idea may just have been born here.

–not sure about Groucho, he had a bit of a “dirty old man” image.  Oh wait…

I wonder whether they thought they’d gotten that when they hired Steven. And then, reanimated by the smell of money, he arose from the dead. Or sort of arose from the dead, anyway.

  • http://twitter.com/TarheelShari Sharon S.

I love how even after Nigel denies it people are still trying to spin it like he didn’t deny it :P

Are you surprised?  This is the fanbase that analyzes every syllable out of Ryan Seacrest’s mouth to figure out if the two contestants on the seal are the “real” Bottom Two.  When it comes to AI, nothing is taken at face value – frequently for good reason.

  • LA Kim

I think it’s funny Nigel & Co. name dropped Adam Lambert to capture the media’s attention.

The one thing which is guaranteed to get you media attention is put Adam’s name as AI judge the upcoming season and you will get hits on websites/blogs and all the entertainment/gossip shows.

Everyone knows just the suggestion of this will cause fanwars and every hardcore conservative to loose it plus the Westboro Church would be preparing to march with signs every week.  What about the children?

So…..Nigel isn’t talking to Adam.  It was Ken Warwick who came to Adam’s rescue during his first album cycle.  WWFM took off after Adam’s two-show mentoring session and lazer performance.    Ken Warwick has never missed an opportunity to praise Adam in every interview.  IMO, it would be Ken Warwick who would lobby to bring Adam in as a judge.

  • Anonymous

Nigel is Executive producer of Idol & was brought back specifically to revamp the show. He is a smart man to not give too much away to peak interest in the show. So, he would know what is going on but it would be the Fox execs who would have the final say on any replacements for any of the judges.

  • Anonymous

One judge I hope they save is Steven.

Not me- I want people paid for saying words to know more than three.

  • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure producers (ie Nigel) are the one who are preventing judges from being honest.

Maybe but I’m still tired of the judges pimping their videos, and taking up performance slots and basically making it be all about them.  I love Adam but seeing him doing that would probably annoy me eventually tbh. That’s one of the reasons why the only one I can still listen to is Jimmy.

  • Anonymous

Huh? I believe WWFM was almost platinum before the AI mentoring gig. The performance gave it a boost but it was already doing quite well and would have gone platinum in a few weeks anyway. When did Ken Warwick get brought in, did he say something?

  • luvadamlambert

    UGH I hate this
    Stupid Nigel
    Adam would have been PERFECT

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/JKPGOWSHLKLHHRL7DORPZXZ2NI Valarie

WWFM was struggling on radio before the mentoring session.  It really doesn’t matter at this point, whether Adam gets the gig or not.   The publicity generated by the rumor has probably done the job already, of giving him a boost.
According to the show’s opening credits, Ken Warwick is still an executive producer of American Idol. Nigel gets the job of handling the press, because he does it so much better than Ken.

  • luvadamlambert

haha I didn’t read the below posts and missed the he :)

    Again miss Simon

Also I think they should have someone who NOW everyone can recognize . But I don’t like either of the new judges . Randy is the essential original idol. I like him, and want him to stay even if he is useless (although it’s impossible for him to stay). They should keep at least some of the idol people have learned to love not another one of those trashy singing shows
Yes I realize I’m being a hypocrite shows

  • OffLeash

Kelly is the only Idol who would be accepted by all Idol fans IMO. Everybody else, Adam included, would be too controversial, and not in a positive way for the ratings because it would piss off other fanbases. After all, it’s Idol we’re talking about lol.

Carrie would’ve been a good choice too, but she’s already said she wouldn’t do it. I hope Nigel can convince Kelly. She would be perfect!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Layla-Hooman/100002284363450 Layla Hooman

What a joke American Idol has become!

  • supersonic

So…..Nigel isn’t talking to Adam.  It was Ken Warwick who came to
Adam’s rescue during his first album cycle.  WWFM took off after Adam’s
two-show mentoring session and lazer performance.    Ken Warwick has
never missed an opportunity to praise Adam in every interview.  IMO, it
would be Ken Warwick who would lobby to bring Adam in as a judge.

Yup.  That’s why he was brought on as a mentor in the first place because Ken Warwick thought that Adam wasn’t as big of a star as he should be so he thought bringing him on Idol for the two night stint would give him a boost.  So, Adam being a judge is probably all on Ken Warwick.

  • http://twitter.com/TarheelShari Sharon S.

You really, truly believe that Ken Warwick wants to give Adam a position as a judge just to “give him a boost”?  Even if, arguably, it would not be in AI’s best interest?  I’m sorry, that makes no sense at all.  Ken Warwick is not evaluated on the basis of how well any of the Idols, including Adam, do after they are off the show.  He is evaluated on the basis of how well the show does.  If – and it’s a very big if – Adam winds up on the judging panel, it will be because TPTB believe it will be good for the show.  If it’s also good for Adam, so much the better, but that’s not going to be the primary motivation.

  • http://twitter.com/Miztig Miz

Of course a lot of PR people are going to be throwing out names of their clients to get exposure and AI is going to play cat and mouse to keep the buzz going. Cracked me up that Nigel name checked Charlie Sheen and Jerry Lewis to point out how ridiculous it all is.

If they decided to use ANY former Idol contestant, it should be Melinda Doolittle. She has the knowledge, experience, and integrity to be a judge and I respect what she has to say.
I’d also like Harry Connick, Jr. and if they could get Ben Folds too, that would be awesome.

That is my ideal judges panel.

  • http://twitter.com/MissGolightly22 No Thanks

Well, Nigel’s comments were about as clear as mud.  Didn’t clear up anything.  In the E! interview, he said he didn’t know if there were negotiations going on.  That’s NOT a denial.  And quite frankly Nigel wouldn’t be brought in on negotiations, that would be for the Fox executives.

Personally, I think Adam’s name is (one of many) in the mix and his name was thrown out in the press to gauge a reaction.  And it’s been very positive.  So points in favor of Adam.  But the process is far from over.

But one would think they’ll have to have everyone in place by sometime in August.

  • OffLeash

If Ken Warwick is in charge of hiring the new judges, Idol’s in deep doo doo. Ken’s a huge part of why Idol’s ratings went down, and especially why S9 was a disaster.

  • mmb

    nvm

  • mmb

Huh???  WWFM was NOT struggling at radio before Adam’s AI appearance in March of 2010.   By the time of Adam’s AI appearance WWFM had just peaked at chr radio and was getting close to its peak on hac….It was also very close to platinum sales already — the AI appearance got it a good sales boost and got it over the 1 million mark a week or two(or three) earlier than it would have got there on its own steam.

anyway — i always like seeing Nigel for some reason…and i’ve no doubt the producers, fox, et al are more than happy to have lots of names floated out there, to have lots of media articles etc. Interesting that Adam’s name was the first name floated to media; nigel’s response is interesting; adam’s response was interesting; the media response has been interesting; idol bubble response has been interesting. Hey, if it gets people talking it all good…

  • http://twitter.com/KariannHart Kariann Hart

Miz, I think that would be a fantastic panel.  Melinda, Harry, and Ben for the win!

  • http://kristentheyellowlab.blogspot.com/ ZsusK

They haven’t talked with Adam. Adam said as much as well. Doesn’t mean his name didn’t come up in discussions.

Look,  I don’t think Adam Lambert is going to be a judge on American Idol. In fact, I suspect we will have another season of JLo, Randy, and Steven. Personally, I’d love to see the panel wiped clean.  As judges, this crew has been worthless.  As entertainers, they’ve been even worse.  But, I suspect we’re stuck with them.

  • http://twitter.com/RonnieDRocks Ronnie D

I still can’t believe Stephen Tyler is paid to do what he does…which is just repeat “that was beautiful” over and over. He totally phones in his judging. The same with Jlo. Idol is a shadow of what it used to be. Part of it is the lackluster talent they shove down our throats, and the other part is the asinine judges.  Adam would make a good judge, but I think focusing on his music career is more important.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

WWFM was in no way struggling before Adam’s mentoring stint on AI. It was already in the top 15 on CHR and was close to going platinum. Adam gave an excellent performance of WWFM that garnered rave reviews from a ton of media outlets, and that performance resulted in a very nice sales spike for the single.

  • Anonymous

All these rumors are going to get annoying quick. It would be nice if they would hurry up and sign whoever and just get on with it. The last thing I want is to see a different story every day about who is or isn’t being considered.

  • YankeeFan08

I’m in NO hurry for the rumor to be put to rest!  The last time I checked there were 242 news articles from around the world about this “rumor”.  And I would like to add that most of the articles I have read are very, very positive.  RCA, DMG and Adam’s PR team must be thrilled with all the media attention. I’m sure they hope it continues for as long as possible. I know I do.

  • mmb

I think the rumors, even if they continue ad infinitum, are fun and entertaining..i mean, these are judges for a beloved, but often super cheesy, reality singing competition — not speculation re: judges for the Supreme Court.  Its all entertainment and not at all serious. Let the rumors and speculation begin!!! I’m up for a whole summer of it, lol.

Even if that’s true – and I don’t believe it is – it wouldn’t have mattered if the media hadn’t cared enough to pick up on it.  In any event, if Adam or his peeps were behind this…well played, Adam!

  • Anonymous

Huh? I believe WWFM was almost platinum before the AI mentoring gig. The performance gave it a boost but it was already doing quite well and would have gone platinum in a few weeks anyway. When did Ken Warwick get brought in, did he say something?

What happened is that, shortly before Adam mentored on Idol, Ken Warwick did an interview with EW in which he said that he was happy to help Adam out by asking him on the show because it was a shame that Adam was struggling.

I remember this vividly because that’s when I started down the rabbit hole.  I was shocked because that seemed like something you shouldn’t ever say about a guest mentor.  It wasn’t the contestant’s fault, but at that point it was obvious that Season Nine lacked the punch of Season Eight.  In my view, it was Adam doing the show a big huge favor by trying to spark something performance-wise in the Season Niners.

To be fair to Ken, though, the show did handsomely by Adam during the broadcast (except for Ryan’s descent into madness that night).  They built Adam up by comparing him to Elvis, gave him plenty of screen time, and let him use lasers!

  • http://twitter.com/livsim Ivan

Why does everyone want Steven to stay? I don’t get it.

“Everyone knows just the suggestion of this will cause fanwars and every hardcore conservative to loose it plus the Westboro Church would be preparing to march with signs every week. What about the children?”

Sweeping generalizations like that are offensive.  I’m a “hardcore conservative” politically, but I love Adam.  Do you really think that Adam’s fans are only liberals?  It’s music, not politics.

  • OffLeash

I think if they hire a singer, it’ll be someone from UMG. Now if Jimmy manages to convince Lady Gaga to be a judge, the ratings would go through the roof. Almost 0% chance of that happening, but she did mentor S10, so maybe a tiny little chance. Of course she might be busy recording a new album, I didn’t keep track, but if she’s in between albums, maybe, just maybe. That would be a huge ratings boost for the show, and iirc, she was a pretty good mentor.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/PVEFG2TOUIXSROKUSO2O2DOWWE Taylor

Lady Gaga is at the beginning of her massive worldwide tour. She is also in the process of writing and recording a new album and will start promo for that in three or four months. Gaga doesn’t have time to be a judge on American Idol.

  • OffLeash

    Too bad!  :(

  • milwlovesadam

Whether there is truth to this or not, Adam sure has had his name and face all over print, TV and cyber media today.  Too bad it’s not for his EPIC performances with Queen, for which he has been all but ignored over here in the states.

As far as judges go, Miley Cryus would kill and bury Idol. I, for one, vow to never watch again if she is a judge.

Yup – love him or loathe him, he’s a magnet.

If JLo is really leaving, which I believe is true, they’ll need a female replacement. So far, the only rumored females are Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Fergie, and Katy Perry. Let’s see what other names come up next month.

Don’t forget that Fox executives also has something to say about the whole show.

You give Ken Warwick too much credit. These AI producers maybe can suggest something but I’m pretty sure the Fox executives who has final say on this. It’s their show too in their network television.

I would probably stop watching if Adam were a judge.  I liked him when he was on, not at all now, but I can’t deal with his fandom…that probably sounds mean, but I couldn’t deal with reading recaps full of comments about how great his hair and eye makeup look, as these things are not the point.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1759402889 Natalie Blake

I enjoy Steven’s antics, but he’s barely useful as a JUDGE. Ditto with Randy and J. Lo. – just there to look pretty (J. Lo) and drop names (the Dawg). I miss the days when Simon was on the show and would tell people like it is, even if he had little tact sometimes.
I feel like the judges have really screwed up the voting the past two years by actually not being tough enough on strong competitors! I think they had a big part in the ousting of James Durbin and Colton Dixon, who should have gone much further. Because they were easy on them on off nights, and gushed praise for others who weren’t so good, those fan bases got complacent. Whereas Simon’s tough talk would always draw out the fanbases to support favorites!

The “hard conservative” I was referring to are those who are unwilling to accept people differences and this is not politics this would be considered more their religious beliefs. It’s their belief of family and what’s makes family values.

There are religious blogs that totally panned Trepassing with references which had nothing to do with the music and focused on one thing.

” Do you really think that Adam’s fans are only liberals?”
Seriously, as much money as Adam fans spend, I seriously doubt you could put any of us in one category.

All Nigel said was that he personally didn’t talk to Adam. Notice how he phrashed it.  They wanted Adam two years ago but he was touring and said it wouldn’t be the right time. I honestly can’t think of anyone who would make a better judge. But it will depend on a lot of politics.

It’s pretty sad that there are people out there who find joy in watching someone fail or not achieve his/her dreams. Why would it matter if Adam Lambert becomes a judge on Idol. If the people at Idol think he is a good fit then so be it. If he fails at it then you have a right to complain.

With 20 years experience in the music/entertainment business, I think Adam would do great as a judge.

Was listening to tmz yesterday and they also mentioned Adam and others as possible judges. Harvey said he talked to Nigel. Talked about Freemantle changing their top people and wanting a new direction. They also said that Nigel doesn’t have a contract for next season. If that’s true, would he be involved in discussions on changes anyway?

I do find it interesting how the “bubble” views this compared to the majority of media outlets.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I am in London at the moment and tried (unsuccessfully) to buy Adam’s UK cd at several record stores. I also asked for directions to any record stores in the area and every single person who asked me “what” I was looking for said “Oh yeh, the guy on American Idol” or “the guy on US X Factor”, so they know who he is.

Lot of good mediafor him this week including a huge picture on their entertainment page in the free Metro morning newspaper.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

Well this is a really interesting place for you to be then.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I do – he’s a riot. Love his comments and he has a way with words. He was a breath of fresh air when he came aboard and he spoke the truth a few key times when Jennifer and Randy were piling on people who deserved to stay. He’s a bit of a loose cannon  and that’s always fun. Yes, he’s not tough enough, but there a very few Simon’s out there. (Thank-goodness.)

I doubt I will ever forgive Jennifer for the way she treated Hayley but she’s a big attraction for the show, I think, so they may make it worth her while.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

LOL but I still think X factor US is the biggest joke – Simon Cowell has a real turkey on his hands with all the walk-outs etc.

I could see Carrie doing something like that if she wanted to settle down in one place, e.g. after she had a baby or something. Kelly just did duets so she’s into the idea. Who knows?

Steven is pretty controversial at times.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

I think the producers put pressure on the judges too, which is why I like Steven. He will always go his own way in the end – a loose and uncontrollable cannon.

  • http://twitter.com/LindsayKempFan Not fit to print

No a fan of this at all personally, although I like him as an artist. He did a terrible job in Season 9. His band played too loudly for all of the contestants. Only Michael could be heard over them. Then Harry comes out to sing the next night and the band was so restrained. Go check it out.

You think Jennifer was jealous of the young ones coming up.

  • OffLeash

Has Steven been renewed for another season? I was hoping they’d get rid of Randy, but I haven’t heard any rumor so far. I think only JLo will be replaced.

You are right, but I was alway’s nosey,I would want to know why they did’nt like broccoli, because I love it, also I was just thought maby he did something to you personally and that is why you dislike him. I could never  dislike someone I really did’nt know at all, even if I thought he was overated, that has nothing to do with him as a person and he really can’t help that, but that’s just me.

I can see why Lambert would jump at the chance as his CD & singles are tanking here, but I’m sure AI could find a far bigger star that needs career help than that arrogant, pretentious little freak.

“Arrogant, pretentious little freak”. Who are you referring to, because it surely isn’t Adam Lambert? I hope the rumor is true and that he is sitting at the judges table when the next season of Idol begins!
