Next Week’s Theme According to Paula Abdul: DISCO! Plus, She’ll be Choreographing the Group Number

Paula Abdul tells John Jay and Rich in her weekly interview with the KISS Phoenix radio show that next week’s theme is…

DISCO!

Best part:Â   She’ll be choreographing the big cheesy group number. Yipee!

Listen to Paula’s interview here:

She doesn’t think there’s a mentor, but says several Disco stars will be there to perform.

A couple of interesting tidbits

  • Paula is worried about Matt Giraud and Lil Rounds
  • Paula said Matt nailed his performance during rehearsals
  • She absolutely hated not being able to critique every performance when the judges were split into two teams for time constraints.   She didn’t find out until show time.   First they though they’d split it up by gender,, but then switched it up at the last minute. Simon had a hand in the decision.
  • Paula doesn’t think Simon will leave.

  • t2

Oh boy! Simon’s favorite theme night. If you think he’s been grumpy so far, wait until next week.

I’d laugh my face off if Adam sang “It’s Raining Men”. Adam should have a very, very good week next week — the rest of them…uh, not so much…

  • jersey

    Yay?

  • NOLA

Same old shit songs. Love Disco; but not on this show.

  • primeminister

Does current dance-y music count as disco??
Lil needs to go, so I don’t have to suffer through another one of her massive fails.

  • Michelle

Oh, show. Why must you test my loyalty like this?!

  • leome

I hope there a few train wrecks, that’s what will make this night interesting.

  • sleeptalker

Guest performer Carmen Rasmusen with “Turn The Beat Around” :D

  • Valentin432

    Worst theme ever…
Why do they keep going back to Disco, it does nothing for the contestants.

  • NOLA

    Here’s a pretty good list:

    http://www.popculturemadness.com/Music/Disco.html

Lady Marmalade – Labelle – Hmmm, wonder who could pull that off? LOL

  • waffle

So does this mean 70’s dance music? Adam should kill next week, then. :)

And how does Archie fit in with that theme?

  • NOLA

Yes, Waffle. That’s when Disco was in.

  • NOLA

    Copacabana – Barry Manilow

Adam, don’t you dare. Please, dear God, no.

  • KrazeeK120

I’m already having horrendous images pop into my head…specifically of Danny Gokey. I’m just really, really scared of how these people will handle disco. ::Cringes::

  • HannaB4

Hated disco when it was first popular and still hate it. :/ I can see this being the demise of a couple of the contestants.

  • Mary

Oh boy. And we thought last night was a train wreck.

At least I can say with a metaphysical certitude that Adam will blow the competition away.

    Thanks for the news MJ.

  • lefty

OK, I’m just gonna say it. I lurve disco. It’s just sublimely cheesy. Which means next week will either be really enjoyable or completely painful for me.

Please, contestants, embrace the cheese and make it a fun evening!

  • lefty

At least I can say with a metaphysical certitude that Adam will blow the competition away.

Maybe. But what is he going to do for disco night that he hasn’t already done? I know he’s full of surprises and all that, but as far as disco goes, didn’t he kind of cover that act a couple of weeks ago?

And if history tells us anything, people often crash and burn on their designated “wheelhouse” theme nights.

  • miknge

Thank God last season there was no Disco theme. I couldn’t for the life of me imagine how Brooke, Cook and Jason would’ve done, and they were my three favorites. How would Archie have done too??

Next week’s theme is made for Adam. He should be able to kill it. Looks like they really want Adam to be in the finale, and maybe win it all. Why didn’t they have disco theme last year? Was it because they wanted Cook to win so that was why they didn’t want to take the chance to watch him fail on that theme week? Or was it because there were more artists in the competition last year? Hmmm…

And I hate the 2 judges critiques thingy. Those who didn’t get critiques from Simon suffer on dialidol.

  • soundscene

And how does Archie fit in with that theme?

Errr… he doesn’t? lol. Then again, neither did Jordin, who was originally scheduled next week. On the upside, David will look super current next to the several old disco stars performing.

  • solitaire

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m already having horrendous images pop into my headà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦specifically of Danny Gokey. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m just really, really scared of how these people will handle disco. ::Cringes::

    ^^^ :lol_tb:

On the plus side, Adam is the only one I see that has a disco bone in his body. Praying, absolutely praying, for Lady Marmalade. :thumbup_tb:
Adam, I will vote for you the entire time, every week, if you pull that out of your amazing little hat.

  • silverbabe

I’m looking most forward to seeing Gokey..because this theme has trainwreck written all over for him. I can’t wait to see him take some cheesy disco song and tun it into some lite-FM crap. Will this be the week the judges finally call him out on his drudge?

Adam is going to be RIDICULOUS with disco. He’s going to embrace his innter-queen and glam-it-up more so than last night. He’s going to have Simon’s head spinning.

  • abbysee

Ah, I came of age in the disco era. In Brooklyn…..Jordache jeans, Lycra spandex skirts and tops, like I was going to dance class, ah, memories…..

Ok, if Lil stays, there is a wealth of stuff she could do well with. Even though she was not so great last night, I must say watching back I saw flashes that she could be ok. It’s just that now I realize that she too is suffering from what Anoop and Matt have had all along. They are skeered! I see the same look of desperation in their eyes. They are totally out of their depth. Lil just realized it a few weeks ago. I think they felt it from the start. They don’t know who to please because the judges have been so schizo about what they should be doing.

If Matt and Anoop survive, it’s gonna be tough for them.

Truthfully only Adam and Allison and maybe Lil could make this work. It’s gonna be fun guessing. Hopefully there will be some awful wtf clues from Adams father.

Maybe disco week will put the Go in Gokey? Pelvic thrust anyone?

  • NOLA

The group song will probably be Ain’t No Stoppin Us Now – McFadden and Whitehead

  • lefty

There’s actually some good raw material for those who are able to arrange well. The Bee Gees, Michael Jackson … I could see Kris taking on something like Jive Talkin’ and any remaining R&B boy trying Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough or even Rock With You (oh, Steven Fowler, I still miss you a little bit). Allison might try something like If I Can’t Have You.

eta: Jason Castro took on Andy Gibb last year, and while the judges didn’t like it, I did.

  • Meg23

    Oh man.
Disco week scares the crap out of me.
Is this their way of forcing the contestants to sing something other than ballads?

  • lefty

The group song will probably be Ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t No Stoppin Us Now – McFadden and Whitehead

I think that was the group song on Top 3 results night last year. I kind of loved it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

lolllllllllll!! So much potential for cheesy and trainwreck-y goodness with this theme.

KK – My first thought too was about WTF is Danny gonna sing. Haha.

    I can’t wait!

  • karenw

Adam doing Superfreak or Lady Marmalade or Sylvesta’s You Make Me Feel Mighty Real .. would be fantastic to see but I guess he’ll stay away from the obvious.

Yeah I agree that it should be a good week for Adam and Lil if she survives will probably do something by Donna Summer. Alison will probably be OK but I think the others will struggle .. unless they take a well known disco song and bring it down to their own style (like Adam did country week with ROF) .. or does disco week mean that they have to embrace the disco balls, fluorescent lycra and sequins?

abbysee …. Can’t say I’m relishing the thought of witnessing any pelvic thrustage from Danny …lol

  • hardkandy

Adam will kill with this theme…again. Seriously there is nothing he cannot do in my mind, total consummate AI performer.
I can’t wait to laugh my ass off over what Gokey’s gonna do.

  • snuffles

Listen up people, there is NO WAY Adam is EVER going to sing “It’s Raining Men” for your own perverse amusement. And I doubt any song by The Village People will be chosen either.

That said, Adam will effin’ OWN this night. And I’m willing to bet he’s going to do the LAST thing anyone is expecting.

  • SpenserJ

I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t for the life of me imagine how Brooke, Cook and Jason wouldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve done, and they were my three favorites.

I’d just like to point out that Jason successfully (to me) folkified an Andy Gibb song from 1977 on last year’s show. Which is still, (again to me) the most original cover from Season 7 and still on my iPod.

So, it can be done. Even the most unlikely contestant can take a Disco tune and do something entertaining with it. Of course, that doesn’t mean they will. Could be a trainwreck, could be fun.

  • flyaway

The comments about only wanting to hear Paula and Simon make me think the whole two judge thing was yet another manipulation – Anoop, Kris and Matt get the “no one cares what they say” judges and the 4 “we’re pushing these as the front runners” got comments from Paula and Simon.

  • lefty

And Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m willing to bet heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to do the LAST thing anyone is expecting.

Maybe he’ll do How Deep Is Your Love or something totally unfunky and unglam. That would surprise everyone.

  • sr4mjc

Lady Marmalade – Adam. Please Please Please! With a pink wig.

  • abbysee

NOLA, that’s a good damn list. It’s inspired me.

I think Adam needs to trend to the funk/R&B side of disco, not the rock/pop side. The Gap Band.Marvin Gaye’s Got to Give it Up. He has Marvin’s range. Or Sylvester! OMG, I forgot about him. Queen to the hilt. Drama queen. Mighty Real is Adam!

Oooh, there are going to be wrecks for sure, but some homeruns too.

  • Rokker

This is not related but I didn’t see where else I could ask it. I’m new to this site but where do you get the album sales numbers from? Is there another site that MJ gets them from to post them on here?

    Thanks!

  • sr4mjc

Adam better not do a ballad next week. No! This theme is made for him dancing.

  • Tess

My mind is just reeling with this theme … and in a good way. For those of us who lived our college days and young adult lives under the umbrella of disco we have so much to look forward to. Number one requirement for ANY contestant to get my vote is that they have to dress the part. Stacked heels, tight pants with flared bottoms (rainbow hues only), white belts, flowered polyester shirts opened down to there with french cuffs and no cuff links, gold necklaces and bracelets, eye make-up (go Adam) for the guys. Midriff tops, strappy heels, spandex lacy underthings (push up bras a requirement), shimmering anything, farah fawcett hair, red lips for the girls.

They all need to walk the walk and talk the talk. OTT is an absolute necessity, and they HAVE to dance. The songs have to be larger than life .. and absolutely nothing obscure. They have to embrace every f–cking moment of the life I led. And every song has to be oversung .. you are dead meat if you sing a ballad, unless you can make my ____ tingle in the process.

Good luck everyone…and I’m sure I’m going to be as dissapointed as hell!

  • haruhi

Dear God, I am your most humble servant, with the meekest favor to ask of you. Please, spare me from Danny’s dancing. If my prayer proves to be impossible, help me accept reality and grant me the grace to overcome my sorrow watching danny groove. amen.

  • karenw

Adam .. electo pop funk at it’s best .. Sylvesta’s Do Ya Wanna Funk

LOL haruhi. THAT is a fabulous prayer. I’ll try it myself. Although, I think we’ll really need that latter part. Not even God himself could talk Danny out of Pelvic! Thrusting! on Disco night.

  • AnnJo

    FUNNY!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

    Copacabana – Barry Manilow

    Oh please do… :devil_tb:

  • bean99

Adam is going to be RIDICULOUS with disco. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to embrace his innter-queen and glam-it-up more so than last night. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to have Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s head spinning.

Mine too, lol. The problem is that he was OTT this week and it looks like it hurt him a bit judging by dial idol so what seems like a naturaly may have some danger for him.

If they use a save this week they’ll all be performing. I don’t think it will be a particularly difficult week but I hate disco.

  • BootStar

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d just like to point out that Jason successfully (to me) folkified an Andy Gibb song from 1977 on last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show. Which is still, (again to me) the most original cover from Season 7 and still on my iPod.

I really liked that performance too (and still listen to it on my iPod as well), but I don’t think the arrangement, or really anything about it, was particularly original. Jason just pretty much covered the Andy Gibb version but sang it acoustically, which in retrospect is probably a really good formula for our non-disco-loving contestants. A lot of those old songs had great melodies, so they just need to choose wisely and “make it their own.”

  • karenw

I agree with the suggestion that Kris could probably do something by The Bee Gees with the guitar

Another suggestion for Adam .. Knock on Wood, Amii Stewart

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tA_VpX9elaM

  • mandalay

Adam doing Donna Summer’s Love To Love Ya – could be interesting.

  • calimari

They did a BeeGees theme a couple years back and everyone crashed & burned. Considering how they love to use “Lady Marmalade” in the Idol audition segments in montages of horrible singers, it would be very cool to see Adam do it and nail it. I agree he will shine w/ this theme, and Lil would have an opportunity if she’s still there next week. Then again, Lil has had many opportunities to shine, and she hasn’t.
I do hate disco with the exception of just a few songs here and there, such as Lady Marmalade.

I bet the group dance will be “We Are Family”.

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

    My choices for Adam:
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor… oh this is an anthem… will love to heard him sing it… the Gay comunity and me will go nuts of happines….

    Lady’s Night – Kool and the Gang… hehehe ;)

or anything by the Bee Gees… my dad and my mon are gonna love next week Idol :lol_tb:

    My choice for Kris:
I Feel Good – James Brown… I just have this image that it will be actually really good…

    My choice for Anop:
Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees… the titles saids it all ;D

  • terps

Simon would die if Adam sang Dancing Quenn

  • TXArchitect

I LIVED this era in college – and the BEST DISCO SONG was:

I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round) by Alicia Bridges

Adam would KILL on this song. It’s got the bridge changes, changes tempo, growling, it’s a fine, fine song, fine song and it has the advantage of the “gender-change” having been done originally by a woman – AND it is “sort-of” a love song – but not really – and Adam hasn’t done any romantic numbers (probably by design) – I’d love to see it.

  • bambambam

Danny’s not totally out to sea here. Disco had a lot of black church music in it.

    “Love Train” – O’Jays
“The Love I Lost” / “Bad Luck” / “Wake Up Everybody” original “Don’t Leave Me This Way” – Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (lead vocal by Teddy Pendergrass)
    “As” – Stevie Wonder
“Mighty High” – Mighty Clouds of Joy
    “Always There” – Side Effect

I know those last two wouldn’t be familiar, but they are proven hits from the club underground.

  • karenw

    For Danny

Shake Your Booty – KC and the Sunshine Band
Oops Upside Your Head – The Gap Band

  • latecomer

Ugh! This theme is SUCH a trap!

By definition, most disco songs transport you right back to the 1970s. The idols get counseled all the time that they are NOT supposed to dress for the theme weeks (as if in costume), although I’m sure Adam will, because he loves to do that.

Any contestant who sings it straight up in a fabulous disco style will get criticized for not sounding “current”. It’s hard to imagine successfully changing the arrangement of most disco songs, so how is a contestant supposed to do well with this theme?

  • Kirsten

Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not totally out to sea here. Disco had a lot of black church music in it.

For some strange reason, I want him to sing “Rasputin”. I would laugh. Shortening it to 90 seconds would make it even funner. “Rah! Rah! Rasputin. Russia’s greatest love machine”. Simon’s head might explode.

Most of these guys are going to have to find a way to modernize and slow down these songs. Lil will insanely try to sing “I Will Survive” at the original tempo and will look even more frenetic than when she sang “Heat Wave”. But, she will have “sent her message to the judges”. Adam will have another wild night, so two-songs-a-night-Top-5 will come just in time for him to bring another ballad back.

  • SpenserJ

I Love the Nightlife (Disco Round) by Alicia Bridges

I have to agree that this truly is a fantastic song.

    For Danny

Shake Your Booty – KC and the Sunshine Band
Oops Upside Your Head – The Gap Band

Oh please no. Imagining Danny & Booty Shaking in the same thought bubble is causing me severe pain.

  • cheese

Oh man, I hope some Stevie Wonder songs appear on the list for Matt and Anoop. Wasn’t Songs in the Key of Life mostly cheesy disco? (As, Sir Duke, I Wish). I am basically unable to distinguish between different disco songs – I just caught the tail end of that era as a kid. Thank Gokey for punk and new wave.

Kris will probably do something like Jason’s Andy Gibb cover from last year.

  • flyaway

Think the save will be used this week on anyone except Matt or Anoop with the hope that both will get voted off during next week’s dreaded Disco theme.

Adam and Lil are already winners, no matter what they pick.

Danny and Allison will have to resort to polyester cheesiness to rally the “my fav is in danger” vote.

The r/b boys are stuck with a Bee Gees falsetto battle.

  • AZIdolFan

    DISCO!?!?!?!

the last disco night i remember idol having was called “dance” or something stupid like that. i remember Bo doing Vehicle (i loved it).

so basically, Adam will get to do what he has been doing every other week. a total campy OTT performance that today’s radio would never dream of playing other than to make fun it and him.

    Great Idea Producers!!!! (idiots)

i just have to get in the mind frame that this will be a super cheesy night and just enjoy it for what it is. I have a week to prepare myself.

  • hollygo9

    Lil – sukiyaki
Kris – I Will Survive (a la Cake)
Adam – How Deep is Your Love (a la Take That)
Allison – Got To Be Real
Matt – You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)
Doughy – Workin’ My Way Back To You
Anoop – Don’t Leave Me This Way

or he could do Daddy Cool .. complete with pimp glasses “I’m crazy like a fooooool” .. “What about it Daddy Cool”

  • chicksineggz

    Ewww, worst theme ever.
Honestly, the only way to succeed at this theme is to go all out (Adam’s pretty much the only one who could pull that off) or rearrange a disco song to.. not be disco.

Hey, remember Beegees in season 6? Jordin Sparks was the one who did the best that night, pretty much because all she sang were ballads.

I’m worried about Matt too. But I think he needs to go to save Anoop and Kris next week. I still think Lil should be eliminated even though that’s never going to happen.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

Oh I forgot about that, I loved that also, was worried about Bo that week but he was good.

  • stelladallas

I think the idols should go all out disco. Embrace it and own it. I don’t care what anybody says, there are some damned good disco songs. If nothing else, next week shouldn’t be boring!

  • Tess

    Adam has to sing “superfreak”!

  • sunchick

:laugh_tb: That’s awesome. I think maybe it will be the Adam and Kris show again next week, because Kris will probably excell at stripping something down and making it fit him, and if anyone can wear the spectacle of disco like a broken in pair of favorite jeans, it’s Adam.

Does anyone remember the big dude who wore the crazy fro wig, was it season 1 or 2? I floved that and Simon said he looked like a clown at a kids party. Simon will hate this.

I’m sorta sad that I missed the disco era. It looked like fun.

oy. this theme was a hot mess, was it 2007? is there a mentor, a la Donna Summer?

Gawd, I hope they’re clearing some decent tunes and defining disco with a broad brush. I can’t believe how hackneyed the movie songs were (minus Kris’s gutsy modern choice)…..

I’m imagining “Bad Girls” or “Hot Legs” or something equally outrageous for Adam, who may be insufferably into this category.

The BeeGee tunes from “Saturday Night Fever” are some of the best of the era, but VERY difficult to sing well, especially solo, as AI 2007 with one of the Gibbs boys mentoring will remind us.

Some palatable possibilities: “I’m So Excited” or “Slow Hand” (Pointers), “Don’t Leave Me This Way” (Thelma Houston), “It’s Raining Men” (Weather Girls), “Got to Give It Up” (Marvin Gaye), “Rock Your Baby,” “I Will Survive” (but who in this group would it be right for? NOT KRIS), does Earth Wind and Fire count?, or the Rolling Stones’ “I Miss You”?

    not my fave genre, folks….

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

I suppose it is too much to hope for that someone would bust out the Revolting Cocks version Da Ya Think I’m Sexy, isn’t it?

    Kris Allen: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Saturday Nightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Bay City Rollers

LOL, this was the very first record I ever owned.

Yeah, I think they called it “70’s Dance Classics” and Bo stole the night with Vehicle (even though it stretched the theme a weensy bit). Carrie was dreadful on MacArthur Park, I remember that.

I have no clue yet what the Idols should sing.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

If the contestants can modernize disco into modern dance music ala Lady Gaga, it could be really fun. Also remember disco had some really good slow dance numbers too. What do you think Ms. (wasltp) how about a little slow dance to “How Deep is Your Love”?

  • downeast

OMG. Disco. Brings back all the special horror of my high school years AND the even worse horror of….BEEGEES NIGHT, 2006. Creepy oldster Barry Gibb crawling up underage Jordan with his eyes and actively drooling…even Melinda was mediocre, and I love me some Mel.
Acccck. Just when I thought we had nowhere to go after last night but up.

Not long after the disco craze fizzled out, Stevie Wonder decided to make a disco song. In the new-wave era of 1982, “Do I Do” managed to reach #13 on the American charts. With his Motown melody-making mastery intact, Wonder could’ve set this song to Bulgarian folk dance music and still had another Top 40 hit on his hands.

Not on the single version is the part where he proudly announces: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I have the pleasure to present on my album, Mr. Dizzy Gillespie! Blow!” and bop’s co-creator and greatest ambassador proceeds to do just that. Dizzy’s lines aren’t bad, but he sounds somewhat tentative and uncomfortable in this environment. Wonder’s trademark harmonica that follows right afterwards only accentuates the contrast in enthusiasm between the two legends’ approach to this song.

“Do I Do” is a dance song that still sounds good today simply because of Wonder’s knack for writing good pop songs and arranging them such that they transcend time. It’s nice to boast about having Gillespie on your record, but here he was hardly needed.

NOOOOOOOOOOO! BeeGees night, anyone? SO. EFFING. BAD!

  • SpenserJ

What do you think Ms. (wasltp) how about a little slow dance to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Deep is Your Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?

Excellent choice – I love that song :)

  • terps

OMG, ABBA! Seriously, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a lot of good material when you look past the obvious.

Being serious, I could see him doing “Take a chance on me”, “Mama Mia”

  • lefty

    Being serious, I could see him doing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Take a chance on meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Mama Miaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

What a great song. Although Dancing Queen will always be my favorite. It’s the iconic song of my childhood years. (For me personally, that is.)

  • sunchick

Soooo, since disco was the 70s, does this mean Bowie is on the table? :ponder_tb:

  • charley

Anything Adam sings will rock, Danny is getting tiring to me, is there any crying song in the Disco era?

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

On “Dancing Queen” as an iconic song of childhood, note that Mr. Elvis Costello in his recent song “When I was Cruel” uses a lyric from “Dancing Queen”in a very cool way!

  • charley

of course my first thought is John Travoltra and Saturday Night Live I can so see Adam on that one, but yes Super Freak would be much better. Kris with KC and Sunshine, get down tonight would be super cool as well. Now the others not quite sure but then again after someone goes tonight we won’t have to worry about what they might have sang. Disco music must be disco music not music that was played during that time. If you can’t bump to it, it’s not Disco

  • abbysee

Oh man, I hope some Stevie Wonder songs appear on the list for Matt and Anoop. Wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Songs in the Key of Life mostly cheesy disco? (As, Sir Duke, I Wish).

    No, absolutely not.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

“Songs in the Key of Life” was NOT disco!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • abbysee

*Abby runs off to play Vehicle*. Swoon~ Love Bo Bice.

  • JohnM

NOOOOOOO! THE POUNDING IN MY HEAD! MAKE IT STOP!

Another prayer: Lord, give me the lightness of heart to embrace the cheese. Amen.

They have to keep both girls around (Save Allison! Save Allison! Save Allison! Save Allison!) so that they can duet the line “I’ve got all my sisters with me” during the group number’s We Are Family segment. Of course, if one of the girls goes home (cough – Lil – cough), the remaining one could do it with Adam…. the duet, I mean….

    sunchick:

Soooo, since disco was the 70s, does this mean Bowie is on the table?

Yes — I can definitely see Adam doing Stay. One of the very few disco-related songs I like, and I like that one a lot. ETA: It’s really more funk than disco, which is why I like it, but definitely close enough.

    colette:

does Earth Wind and Fire count?

Certainly Boogie Wonderland would. I was so sad when they turned from their fantastic mid-70s funk to that disco nonsense, ironically after the craze had peaked. But Boogie Wonderland (and other EWF songs that fall in the disco category) would give Adam a great opportunity to match (and maybe exceed?) Philip Bailey’s stratospheric notes.

I laughed out loud at some of the comments, you folks are hilarious!! (keep in mind I’m at work, in law office – people tend to steer a wide path when someone is seen/heard giggling to themselves for no apparent reason, LOL).

My initial reactions to the Disco theme:

    1. Oh. GOD. wtf. Why why why the HELL?!
    2. [after seeing a couple the HokeyGokey comments] Gokey. Disco. Eeeewwwwwwwwwwwww. I don’t think I can watch.
    3. Trainwreck all OVER the friggin’ place, except for…
    4. Adam will be in his glory and will annihilate everyone else so badly they’ll be left bleeding in the gutter, and the judges will give him props for being the only one who really pulled it off – *as long as* he doesn’t go too-too “camp”. I’m a tad afraid that he’ll go a little too over-the-top. Don’t get me wrong, I love him to little itty-bitty pieces, but I really hope he won’t let his inner 8-year-old go completely bananas. Smart choice, smart choice, pleeeeeze!

This is the type of theme where song and interpretation is sooo important – not that they aren’t *always* – but disco has an inherent element of over-the-top cheese-fest; the wrong choice on either/or equals totally craptastic suckage and could very well result in an implosion of the space/time continuum.

I think I definitely want someone to break out the ABBA! “Muriel’s Wedding” anyone? Hmmm – “Fernando”… “The Winner Takes It All” [Allison maybe??]… “The Name of the Game”… “Thank You for the Music”… “Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)” – wait, on second thought noooo… rofl.

I think the only prediction that’s anywhere near accurate (aside from the inevitable cringe-worthy suckage that some contestants will dish out) is that whatever song Adam chooses, it will be unexpected. I also agree with those who said above that his choice will (or should) be another up-tempo, so that he can slow it down again the following week (OMG at the thought of TWO Glambert performances in a single night!!!). Pins-and-needles over here for the next few days!

  • ettacandy

This will be seriously hilarious. I cannot, cannot wait. The songs, the show, the lighting…. bring on the disco! I will have to go out to the store and stock up on Velveeta and Cheez Wiz!!!! WHOOT WHOOOT!

And seriously folks… Paula is (or, was) an excellent choreographer. I seriously can’t wait for next week’s group number. Maximum cheese!

  • sparklesgirl2

I’m not super excited about this. How much Bee Gees and Donna Summer will we have to endure??

  • abbysee

If you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t bump to it, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not Disco

Really? In NYC it was if you can’t hustle to it, it’s not Disco.

  • kbr

What is this show trying to do to me?! Disco? Seriously? Adam will do fine, I think the only other category he could have more success in is possibly ’80’s hair bands (or Broadway). Other than Adam (who will certainly inject some energy) I am a little scared of what the rest of the group is going to bring? No intent to offend, but I genuinely hate disco music and I can’t believe they actually decided to do this. Wait that’s a lie, I can believe it but I just don’t want to.

At least the group number will be fun, I loved me some Paula dancing back in the 1980’s!

  • sparklesgirl2

And also, if someone sings “Take a Chance on Me” or “The Winner Takes It All,” that could be a death wish. Don’t let your song choices write your elimination fate!!

  • kerfuffle

Predictions: Adam will shine (no brainer). Kris has the potential to do really well, so long as he rearranges the right song. Lil would probably do well, but I’m hoping she doesn’t get the opportunity. Allison and Anoop also have a good shot at doing well. I think this will be really tough for Matt, but I want him to do well. Danny will make my ears and my eyes bleed.

  • Layla

Is it disco or is it the 70’s? I would love to hear/see Adam sing Bowie ¨’s Fame! That would be fuckin awesome! Don ¨’t know if te backup singers would be able to do lennon’s part, tho’

  • JohnM

I can really hear Allison making an impassioned ballad out of Don’t Leave Me This Way.

Come to think of it, I can hear ME making an impassioned ballad out of Don’t Leave Me This Way if she goes home tonight. :glurps_tb:

  • Layla

…and please no Abba! I live in Denmark and that group is STILL just overplayed here…they ¨’ve made a comeback with the youngsters…honestly cannot abide their music.

If LIl survives, I’m sure she wll sing a Donna Summers ¨’ song.

I think Kris should sing “Jungle Boogie”. Hee.

Allison- maybe I will survive…but 1 minute 30 seconds really does shorten that Disco anthem. Hmmmm. If she survives she needs a comeback but she really edffed up last night.

Maybe Adam should sing y”ou can ring my bell” One of the best songs from the disco era.

I hope he doesn’t start becoming predictable by singing a bee Gees song-falstto and all that- although I used to love the BeeGees.

  • yummystars

Actually, I think this is a so-so theme for everyone, including Adam, who runs the risk of overdoing it here more than in any other category. But he’s smart so I’m not too worried for him.

It’s one of those categories where you can make it much better by simply rearranging some cornball song and making it lovely, so actually I think anyone can do well.

And I’m really looking forward to Paula’s choreography. The group number should be fun! I bet their outfits will be a blast.

  • tinawina

    DISCO WEEK????!!

The potential for cheese, and not the good kind, is overwhelming. Danny will be unable to resist the call of velveeta. Matt and Anoop, if they are still there, will be pure corn. There is nothing disco about Alison. Lil has been handed a gift on a silver platter, and she will still find a way to blow it. Kris is way too vanilla for disco.

Adam should do well thought. He does disco every damn week anyway.

    Shoot me now.

  • CathyMK

Dannyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not totally out to sea here. Disco had a lot of black church music in it.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Love Trainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Oà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Jays
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Love I Lostà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ / à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bad Luckà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ / à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Wake Up Everybodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ original à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Leave Me This Wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ – Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes (lead vocal by Teddy Pendergrass)

Danny will sing Don’t Leave Me This Way. :wallbash_tb:

Adam will probably shock us all by turning a cheesy disco song into a lovely mid-tempo power ballad. He hasn’t done a ROF-style total rearrangement in a while.

  • sunchick

Is it disco or is it the 70à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s? I would love to hear/see Adam sing Bowie ¨Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Fame! That would be fuckin awesome! Don ¨Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if te backup singers would be able to do lennonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s part, thoà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

Fame would be stellar. Or Changes. Or Golden Years. Or especially Life On Mars!!!! I wonder if Adam could get away with going the Bowie route since he already did Play That Funky Music. I give up trying to guess, though. I’m sure they will get a very short list to choose from. And someone will do Brick House.

  • rayni

I think they pulled disco back in to showcase Adam – it is so his wheelhouse (tm Randy). Allison can growl out “I Love the Nightlife”, Kris can do a little BeeGees ballad – “I Want to be Your Everything”. And Lil – well surely she’ll be gone and we won’t have to worry about it. Anoop, Matt and Danny – I don’t even care.

  • Victoria

Paula’s choreographing? Oh, this should be fun. :dry_tb:

Since I have basically zero knowledge of Disco outside of the BeeGees (thank you, mom) I can’t really speculate. All I know is, it sure seems like this was set up for Adam. If it wasn’t, he got lucky and the rest of them definately did not.

  • colette

Not that I have a PhD in disco or anything, but the term often applies to dance songs from the 1970s AND 1980s, with lots of overdubbing, a steady dance beat, and really really tragic platform shoes, Farah Fawcett hair, and skin-tight, flared, garish clothing you wouldn’t wish on a kindergarten Halloween party.

Of course, AI’s idea of “disco” is anyone’s guess. Could it mean even MORE Bryan Adams and Diane Warren songs?

And Ms. Paula is going to turn this bunch of clumping kids into Fly Boys and Girls on the dance floor?? This could be a classic….

  • kbr

Ok…this music is awful. These are not predictions of what they will sing, but I think they are best for the people. Who knows who is going home so I just chose from the 7 left:

Matt: How Deep is Your Love by The Bee Gees (good for the falsetto etc)
Kris: Knock on Wood by Amii Stewart (lots of other people have done this and I really hope he gets this, if not it has Danny written all over it and I just don’t want that for this song!)
Allison: Can’t Get Enough of Your Love by Barry White (just change the key and I think she can change it and rock out with it)
Anoop: If I Can’t Have You by Yvonne Elliman (it has energy, but not too much energy)
Adam: Stayin’ Alive by The Bee Gees (because it should be done and I think he’s the only one who can pull it off)
Lil': Don’t Leave Me this Way by Thelma Houston (big diva’s mom, it would work well with her voice)
Danny: Boogie Shoes by KC & the Sushine Band (cool music to listen to and not that much singing necessary)

Oh. This one’s gonna be a doozie.

  • terps

I hope the group dance is better then how Paula dances by herself when they sing. Every time she does the same thing a clap followed by a few shakes

  • chessguy99

Fantasia did Holding Out For A Hero, season 3 on Disco Week. Hopefully Allison will do that. Its pretty much in her key as is and Fantasia didn’t do so well with it, so its safe from comparisons. It would be a breath of fresh raw power on a night full of falsettos, so will stand out. It will also give TPTB more flexibility in positioning her as the soul boys will all go soft next week, those that remain that is.

  • Allen

Something along the lines of Tori Amos’s version of Ring My Bell for Allison could be fun.

    Go ANOOP!!

I think Gokey will kick some ass next week.

I hope the group dance is better then how Paula dances by herself when they sing. Every time she does the same thing a clap followed by a few shakes

There was a time, back in the 80’s when Paula was a pretty kick ass choreographer. She has a ton of training and a lot of experience. I have no explanation for why she seems to have lost her own rhythm at some point. But I do know that, at one point, she had the skills. She hasn’t done the choreography thing in a VERY long time. So, it’s good that she’s going to do it during disco week, as I expect the moves to be pretty dated.

Basically, she’s got the resume to choreograph a group number, she just doesn’t have the latest dance “language” so to speak. That said – I’m waaaay interested to see what she comes up with.

  • elisa3da

Gosh, it will be a dreadful night for I. I hate disco !

  • avakaran

    Here are my picks~

    Adam:
    Super Freak – Rick James
    Stayin’ Alive – Bee Gees
You’re The First, The Last, My Everything – Barry White
Get Up Offa That Thing – James Brown
You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate

    Allison:
    Lady Marmalade – Labelle
    Dancing Queen – Abba
    Heart of Glass – Blondie

    Anoop:
    Copacabana :D

Danny: (is it obvious I’m not a fan?)
    Boogie Oogie Oogie

    L’il (if she’s still there):
    I Will Survive

Not sure about Kris or Matt

Yes à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I can definitely see Adam doing Stay. One of the very few disco-related songs I like, and I like that one a lot. ETA: Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really more funk than disco, which is why I like it, but definitely close enough.

JohnM, you suggested one of my favorite songs, “Stay.” If Adam doesn’t cover Bowie for Disco Week, I don’t know when he will. I haven’t timed it, but I’m pretty sure the song has more total instrumental sections than vocal. There’s probably enough vocal to follow that signature guitar intro for the stage performance. I just wonder if the studio version on iTunes would be full length.

IIRC, Allison mentioned ABBA as a guilty pleasure. If she picks “Dancing Queen,” she should change the lyrics to “young and sweet, only sixteen.” I think “Fernando” or “The Name of the Game” would better suit her voice and range. I wanted her to sing “Lady Marmalade” this week and it would still be a killer showcase for her.

I think Kris, Danny, Matt and Lil could find good songs from the era.

Groove Line” by Heatwave would be a great group song.

I’m worried with next week theme.
Can we consider All She Wants To Do is Dance as a Disco music ?
If yes. I’m really worried for Kris.
Good Luck Kris ! and Gambatte !

  • cookcricket

The first thought I had for Lil is “I will survive” by Gloria Gaynor. At least we won’t feel so bad for her when she has her ‘sing-out’ on elimination night.

I hope Allison doesn’t pick ABBA just because she likes them, but because she can kill it!

I need to think some more for he rest of them.

  • juanca7
