David Cook

David Cook’s new Video blog has just been posted. He recorded it right before he took the stage for the Tonight Show concert series. About the upcoming record, he says, “we’ve knocked out about 7 songs already.”

After the JUMP…

  • Jolene

I love that he filmed this himself… it’s so “homemade video” of him. Short and sweet, and hearing that 7 songs have already been “knocked out”… WOW. That’s quick.
If those are all new songs (which seems to be implied, because he links it to writing with people), and they do end up using some of his previous work… well, than I won’t be surprised if they do manage to put the album out as soon as October.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Um. David. *sits him down* You fail at information. You are supposed to play the songs and pass out the sheet music, not just casually mention 7 songs. Let’s not get it wrong again, mkay? I’m expecting a full length myspace vlog concert next time, complete with a rundown of how much your contract is worth and how many iTunes downloads you sold. Jesus, I shouldn’t be doing all the thinking here, pal. You have got to get on the ball.

  • spritely

I love the homemade feel of it, too. It feels like he’s so comfortable with himself and his fans that he can show up all touseled and tired and rumpled and plop down on the couch and chat.

Wow, his hair looks so red.

chachi, lol! I hope you got through to him.

  • ziggy

Knocked out 7 songs? Be still my heart!!! I can hardly wait!!

  • sleepyinsomniac

Initially I was upset that whoever took the video did not realize that the camera angle is bad. When I realized it was David himself recording it on the laptop, the bad camera angle made the video endearing. LOL.

Since they’re being so prolific on “knocking out” songs, maybe one could be released as a single this summer? Pretty please!

  • Trina

I too love the homemade feel and this one seems more natural. God knows as much as I loved the first one it felt a little rehearsed. I like the idea of him just whipping out his laptop and decideding to film something.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

I just love the vid updates but this one did seem more natural and down to earth. :)

  • ianamy

Seven songs already? Sounds like they want a quick buck from him, lol. Maybe they think cougars are going to buy like Claymates.

You don’t look excited for the album. Maybe you should learn to fight for your materials.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Uh, just giving an example here – by the end of the tour last year, Blake had about 15 songs done, about 6 or 7 completely finished. And he wasn’t even the winner. And he released in December. Yet, not all of the songs made the album. Just like I doubt all 7 of these songs will make Cook’s album.

And if only cougars can buy the album, then I’m screwed. Cause I’m sure as hell not a cougar. And I’m sure as hell not buying more than one.

ETA: Am I correct in assuming that being in the recording studio is his job? And that the majority of his press tour ended about 2 weeks ago? So, logic applies – since he’s done with the big press tour, he should do his job, correct? Not sit on his ass.

  • Trina

LOL Wow you managed to read from a one minute video that he’s a) “not excited” about this album b) the label is out to make a quick buck and c) he’s not getting his own material? Damn my Cooktard vision must be out of focus!

  • lovegoodmusic

I thought Cook’s video was natural and down to earth, what a sweet guy.
And, It’s nice to hear that seven songs are already written for his upcoming album. Yay!

sleepyinsomniac: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“knocking outà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ songs, maybe one could be released as a single this summer”?
That’s a good question and I would love for David to have a chance to promote and release a single from the album from one of his own songs. Well maybe in one of his future interviews someone will ask some new questions concerning his album.

    Good luck David Cook!

  • Revolver

Let’s be honest here… 19E (and probably even RCA) have known they would be doing an album with Cook, win or lose, for a while now. Long before the show ended. I would be extremely shocked if many of the writers and co writers didn’t have material turned in before the show ended.

David himself mentioned that he had written several new songs during the course of the show.

So the pace so far isn’t hugely shocking. It isn’t like they said “Oh! we’re going to make an album with Cook!” and spurted something out in two weeks.

My only concern is the voice and recording quality. They have had that dude performing live a LOT .. in addition to rehearsals. Throw in studio time and it has to be extremely taxing.

  • baxter

    YAY…What Chachi said….LMAO!!!!!!

‘Knocked out 7 songs” could mean a variety of things. They could be written, roughly recorded or album ready…who the hell knows. And like Sarah said, this in no way means that these 7 songs will ultimately end up on his album. It would in no way shock me if there is a list of 20-25 songs with potential for the album by the end of the summer. And don’t forget, it’s not like DC is a rookie at creating an album either.

Hell when I buy a pair of shoes ( and I am a self proclaimed ShoeWhore) I never try on just one pair and buy them. OH HELL NO…..it’s a process. I try on half the store to finally settle on one pair. Ahhhh the halcyon days of shopping in the Nordstrom shoe department…sigh!! :)

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

LOL Bax. GREAT analogy. Forget trying on half of just ONE store. I comb the whole effing mall. I’m notoriously picky when it comes to shoes, especially when I’m looking for a specific pair (just ask my best friend. She’s got great shopping stories about me lol.).

I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a long list of potential songs too. 7 songs is just the beginning.

  • spritely

I read weeks and weeks ago that songwriters were lined up to write for Archie back when he was the assumed winner. Along about Billie Jean a whole bunch of them must have started adding drums, an electric guitar, and some falsetto, lol. So, yeah, I’ll bet David’s got a ton of stuff to choose from–his own and also new songs from composers who’d dearly love to get a song on his first album.

  • hollygo9

The way he said it, I took it to mean that they had 7 songs written/picked out. I didn’t think he meant he had anything recorded yet. Considering the wealth of material he had to pick from, I don’t think this has happened too fast at all. Your mileage my vary, though.

  • ianamy

Sarah, thanks for the Blake example. How did that work out for him?

  • movin2thabeet

I have heard somewhere that DC is planning on releasing a new single sometime this summer. I seem to remember late summer, thinking around August.

  • spritely

I wonder if any of the songs being considered are ones that Michael Johns wrote. Remember sometime earlier there was an article in which MJ said that Cookie listened to his stuff and said something about how he’d be happy to have it on his own album? Possibly I have made this up, but I don’t think so. Or maybe they have written something together. ha! It’s all conjecture at this point.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

No problem, ianamy. Want another example? Daughtry.

  • cooktard76

Responding first, then going back to read what everyone else has to say.
I was wondering when I was gonna get my next Cookie video. After he told me we were in a relationship, I got all excited. Then kinda started to feel jaded and rejected (tm Fall Back Into Me) b/c there hadn’t been another one… until now!

Wasnt as good (or long) as the first, but I’ll take any Cookie crumbs I can get.
    7 songs already? Holy Wow.
And no worries Cookie, I have my tour/tewer tix in hand and am ready to rock out! =)

  • Trina

Sarah, yeah what you said. JMO but when a pot is being stirred it’s best to ignore.

  • sleepyinsomniac

cooktard, I was feeling the same way too. As i logged on to the internet this morning my first thought was damn, David’s just like all them other boys, saying we have a relationship but then just bailing out. Good thing the vlog came on just about an hour later. LOL

YMMV, but I don’t think he sounded like he wasn’t enthusiastic about the 7 songs already “knocked out”. My own speculation is that a couple of those has to be his pre-idol stuff otherwise they wouldn’t be ready (whatever your understanding of being “knocked out”) is.

  • ginger012

    I took the 7 song thing as….they have written 7 songs…not recorded.
Wow.. I always thought David was tired – thats why he talked so slow but Im begining to think that is his personality…VERY laid back..but I read somewhere he has to stay that way because of his HBP…
He looks very cute but I prefer the clean shaven David!!

  • http://myspace.com/saltwatercures pj

I’ll judge Cookie’s album after I hear it. :-) I’m looking forward to hearing what he does.

  • jan

Count me as someone who loves this video – I’m glad that David doesn’t feel he has to have hair, make-up, lighting, and professional cameramen in order to talk to us. I like the natural intimate quality and I’m happy for the tidbits of information.

  • littlepark

I thought it was given that American Idol is all about making a quick buck. :p

  • SpenserJ

    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll judge Cookieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s album after I hear it. :-) Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m looking forward to hearing what he does.

Ditto on that. I think it’s really nice that technology allows these guys to communicate so quickly with their fans. With their schedules the way they are, I also think it’s quite lovely that they take the time out to do it.

  • cheese

Aww, I like this video with the bad lighting and camera work better than the “relationship” one. I have no clue what “knocked out” means in this context, but I pretty sure it doesn’t mean “recorded 7 songs, including rejects from all former Idol albums and a Diane Warren ballad. Only 3 tracks to go! Album out July 4th! Go buy 7 copies! Cougars 4 Cook!”

I think it could mean he has a good start on the music and lyrics for 7 new songs, or has a total of 7 songs under serious consideration for the album, which might include songs from his previous work. If he really wrote/co-wrote 7 new songs since May 21 even with all his ongoing appearances and interviews, I’m impressed. He does make it sound like he’s pretty intimately involved in the writing process. (Would he say “we’re in the writing process” if he is just listening to submitted songs from random songwriters?) I’m looking forward to seeing how many writes/co-writes he ends up with, if only because he seems to be a fairly prolific writer himself and he’s not too shabby at it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/chachithegreat chachi

Cheese. Obviously, those that question the power of the cougar don’t know that he was in the monthly newsletter promising to sleep with all of us in turn if we bought 20 CDs. Why should we doubt him? I’ve already got my outfit picked out. Two words: Be. Dazzler.

  • Layla

Once I got used to the angle I enjoyed this short video- more intimate in feel than the first one. So glad he’s continuing his “relationship” with us LOL

I read somewhere that in the last few weeks of the show he was coming in first in votes, so the producers of course knew he would be making an album…even if he’s come in second he’s be making this album so I’m sure things have been in the works for some time. He also has a wealth of material to choose from.

Being a huge lover of AH, I am hoping that there are songs from that mysterious second solo album he was putting together.

7 songs eh? Does that mean 3 or 5 more? One of the songs most likely will be TOML. Maybe ABMB? Here’s hoping! ABMB would make a great first summer single while we wait for more of his own material from the album. Nothing wrong with a popular cover song which will help sell the album when it comes out.

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Ugh. Ignore the pot stirring please! Read the post and move on. FYI: Folks who drop in to a thread just to bait and start fan wars, eventually get banned. The Cougar bullshit is generalizing about fanbases and is the worst kind of baiting. Stop it.

  • Thea

The video does not work :(

But I have some Cookie to look forward to this evening :)

  • Lisa

Since we’re having this heart to heart David, I felt cheated out of an *All I Really Need Is You* iTunes download. Color me bummed. So two words for ya David: Bonus Track.

Love the vid, thanks for being so down to earth! Will buy one kick butt cd, cause I know that is what you’re putting out eh? That is all….

  • Mia

Great to hear that his album is coming along nicely. I just hope his voice holds up with the gruelling schedule he has in store.

Grab the world with open arms Cookie but rest, rest, REST…

  • sleepyinsomniac

    I second this.

  • poporange

A “cougar ” not a wild animal living in parts of CA but a refference to women that are not considered teens. Things I learn here and I thought it was a good animal mascot.

So does that mean that when applying for an AARP magazine this statement will come with it? “Congradulation you are now eligible to buy A DC cd” Yippee! Well I also see some seniors extra money for them or a troubling aspect for them which would be illegal selling of DC cds to the underaged.(maybe below 50)
This is a joke about he term cougar………

Seriously it was a good youtube .

This is the one I want to see also. I’d rather this be included than ABMB – even though I like ABMB.

    Make that Bonus Tracks:

“All I Really Need is You”
    “Baba O’Riley”
    “Yo Face”

In that order. No need to include Skittles.

  • carrie13

Have to add my vote for the homemade video from the laptop à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ more genuine and spontaneous.

  • AInoob

Great video clip, thanks for posting it, MJ.

Purely speculation on my part, but I also took knocked back to mean written. Writing 7 songs isn’t all that much at this point if, in addition to anything he may have written or co-written since the win, they’ve also used (or re-worked) any of the material from AH, that mysterious second album Cookie was supposed to record pre-Idol, or if they’ve used any of the songs he’s mentioned writing while still on AI. I also would love if he co-wrote some songs during the Idol tour with Michael or some of the other contestants.

I am looking forward to his album. I think he has a good ear for music and arrangements that work for him and judging by AH I think he writes well.

OT, but what does YMMV mean? I’ve seen it on here before but can’t figure it out.

  • kiki39

Love the new vlog, HUGE DC fan, but I must say, Cookie is starting to look a little rough around the edges again, and I am a little worried. Apparently, the stylists that fixed him up on AI are no longer in the picture. Boo.

  • gingerly

I’m up for All I Really Need Is You. I loved his performance of the face song, but it’s a freaking boring song and he did all he could with it in 1 1/2 minutes.

I’m really curious to see how his album turns out. So much of what he did on AI that got the most praise was absolutely nothing like I’d heard on any of his previous albums. It should be interesting to see how he deals with what he wants to do versus what people expect him to do.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary, which means “your opinion may differ”….

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

I took it to be 7 written and/or under consideration for the album given that we know they are looking at some of his songs from AH and his unreleased album. As for his excitement level, it was just his blood sugar crashing from the Taste The Rainbow song overload ;)

  • AInoob

    Aha. Thanks Gwendolyn!

  • Jolene

Why stop at a bonus track? I really want a bonus EP, featuring:
    1. Hello
    2. All I Really Need Is You
    3. Baba O’Reily
    4. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
    5. The World I Know

If only those could be made available as studio versions… Hot damn, we’d have 5 more #1s on iTunes.
Also – was it ever revealed who chose which song got a studio version? I’m curious as to the factors that were considered.

  • jan

I have always believed that All I Really Need is You didn’t get the studio version because they were saving it for future commercial release. It is much stronger than I’m Alive which got the studio treatment. I am holding on to that belief – because I want to see the full studio treatment of it.

  • Michelle

I took it to mean that 7 songs that David recently worked on have been added to the pool from which eventually about 20 will be recorded and 10-13 chosen for the final album :) Sooo…they are still nowhere close to done. I do hope some of these are from that AH followup album!

There’s always that worry about what expectations people will have based on the *covers of songs from limited themes* they are forced to do on the show. In this respect I think it’s good David tried to stick to his own style as much as possible…

  • Lisa

Why stop at a bonus track? I really want a bonus EP, featuring:
    1. Hello
    2. All I Really Need Is You
    3. Baba Oà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢Reily
    4. The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
    5. The World I Know

***Hope someone somewhere in high power is reading this love for all the studio’s we were cheated out of. Someone on the other side of that Magic Rainbow***

I second this. As long as Hello & Yo Face is right in there with All I Really Need Is You. One of my favorites studio’s of DC’s besides my MOTN, is Little Sparrow, & it did not really get the iTune love it deserved. It’s simply amazing. Killer. Ending.

In TOML which I have nicked *Lucky Charms*, we have David singing about Magic Rainbows.
In Little Sparrow he sings, *I would flutter all around you, On my little sparrow wings*.
Now I have a mental pic of David as a sparrow fluttering his *wittle* wings around that magic rainbow, lmao.

Embrace the cheese David, you do it so well it’s no longer cheese! heh.

  • RemusL

Bonus tracks? Bonus EP? Hmm, not nearly good enough.

I want a 2 CD album with bonus DVD.

CD 1 would feature completely new material, CD 2 would be a compilation of studio versions of his AI songs, and the DVD would feature behind-the-scenes “making of the album” video footage, as well as the complete album in DVD-audio format.

To appease the retailers, go ahead and toss in various bonus track offers specific to each vendor (iTunes, Amazon, Wal-Mart, Target, Best Buy, Yahoo, HMV, Virgin, Napster, etc.) – even though Elliott Yamin fans were understandably frustrated trying to collect every bonus track released this way.

For such a compilation, I would willingly pay big bucks. For the record, I’m not a cougar or even of that gender – such is the power of The Magic Rainbow.

  • reinharv

I got that he has knocked out 7 songs by meaning “written” and not recorded because he said “writing process.” It’s been pretty hectic for him with all the appearances he’s had to do and prep for the tour, promote the TOML, promote the tour, etc. I have no doubt that he’ll be writing more and have quite a list to choose from before he starts recording them. What’s the rush? I would rather he release his first album when he feels it’s perfect because I want to have “goosebumps” when I hear it to quote Neil Diamond. That first CD sets the standard for an artist and I want it to be a David Cook “classic” for years to come. Talk about pressure….The bar is set so high for David Cook.

Though I would love him to record a full “All I Really Need Is You” because he never did release a studio version I doubt he will reprise anything simply because he’s already done it. I want all new material but I’ll be happy if he includes All I Really Need is You.

I doubt he will release a single until after the tour because the tour will keep him in the public’s sights and after that’s done–put out a little teaser–by performing his new single live first and then making it available for sale–you know–throw us out a bone–a single–until the album get released.

When Cook performs a song live he does something to us. Then, we’ll rush to our computers and download it as soon as it’s available. Some of his studio versions such as Little Sparrow, Innocent, etc., were unbelievable. Frankly, all the songs he did on Idol that the judges felt didn’t have a beginning, middle, and an end wasn’t a commentary on the song or performance but “WE WANT MORE” because I would scream–just a another minute more–don’t stop!

  • Jenn_AI Fan

It did seem strange that each week, they held back the most popular, best critically reviewed songs of Cook’s, and I’d been harboring the hope that they’d recorded more than one song each week and will release All I Really Need Is You, Baba O’Riley, and Your Face at some point. But it sounds like they only recorded one song each of those weeks….

  • abigail

I love the idea from Remusl…………I think we would all concur. I am going to quote that on his fan page about the whole 2 CD album and DVD thing. Great great great! Maybe somebody out there will listen.
