No new stuff this week, just a greatest hits compilation released from one of the seminal bands of the 80′s, The Smiths.  Lead singer Morrissey sang songs of   loneliness, alienation and self-pity. His lovelorn yearnings, set to intricate melodies and buffered by Johnny Marr’s ringing guitar riffs made for, if not a party, some pretty compelling music. The band influenced a host of artists that came afterward, including Radiohead, Oasis and the Killers.   I wore their albums out back in the day. Maybe it’s time for an upgrade. Amazon iTunes

What else do I have this week?

How about Ryan Adams covering the Foo Fighter’s “Times Like These?” Seriously!

I think he sounds a little like Neil Young…

l’ll definitley be getting The Smiths cd. Haven’t listened to them in a while. They were very much a part of my youth.

I’m currently in love with Taylor Swift’s new album, especially “White Horse.” The girl can definitely write some cute and catchy music.

I downloaded Beyonce’s album leak and I think “If I Were A Boy” is the best, if not the only good and memorable song on the album. Definitely good choice on making that a lead single.

Elvis Costello is pretty much a staple for me and my EC album of the week is “My Aim Is True.” But that’s not new music, heh.

I’m in love with Eva Cassidy’s new CD “Somewhere”.

I love Elvis Costello. He’s got a talk show on the Sundance channel starting in December and it sounds terrific. It’s produced by Elton John, who will also be his first guest. I’m going to do a little thing on that in the upcoming weeks.

New to me, but, he’s been around quite awhile is Darrell Nulisch. His music is a cross between blues and STAX type soul, sometimes a smoother Motown touch. A forerunner to Marc Broussard.

There are some misses on Beyonce’s new one, but, there are also some fun songs and some ballads that really show her vocal range & talent.

Enrique Iglesias is a guilty pleasure, but, I only have his last CD, so, his Greatest Hits CD will fill the bill.

Another Dutch artist, Alain Clark (looks a little like Shemar Moore), has a cool vibe. He does some neo-soul, pop, AC, and dance tunes, without making the CD seem disjointed.

Nothing particularly new for me this past week. Just listening to whatever comes up.

Good call on The Smiths, MJ! I’m soooo getting this GH album.

I’ve been listening to Carolina Liar’s album Coming to Terms more this week. There’s not a skippable song on the album.

And I’ve been listening to a few singles- Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire, Matt Nathanson’s Come on Get Higher, and Crystal Shawanda’s My Roots Are Showing, which is a fun, rockin’ country song with some attitude.

And thank you to all of you who mentioned Paramore last week. I’ve been enjoying a few of their songs this week, especially “When It Rains”, and I’ll probably get a few more songs eventually.

I’m looking forward to your reports on Elvis Costello’s show, MJ, since I don’t get the Sundance channel.

This might be kinda late since it’s charting on HotAC already… Anyhoo, Lenka‘s album is really adorable and fun, a pop gem. The “I want my money back” cracks me up every time.

Thanks for posting that Ryan Adam’s Foo cover,mj. I am not a huge fan of Adams, but that is a good song! The guitar sound is so sweet on it.

The Smiths!!!! Man that takes me back. You know whose concert was on one of the hi def channels last night? The Cure! Now someone needs to dig up the Dead Milkmen and you will have a nice little summary of my college experience. LOL.

  • Dr. Tracey

Elvis Costello was the first concert I ever attended, I didn’t know he had a show coming on tv so thanks for that info, i’ll definitely try to watch.
Love The Smiths, you picked my two favorite tracks.
I bought 2 CD’s this week, David Archuleta’s which i’m not thrilled with (no offense to his fans, my daughter loves it LOL), and Mari Wilson’s Platignum Collection, anyone familiar with the show Coupling will know who she is.

The Smiths is my sister’s favorite band in the world. She even moved out to Los Angeles to be near Morrissey, lol, j/k. She did discovered her inner vegan from Morrissey. Geez I remember the “Meat is Murder” days, lol. Anyway I remember going to the Smiths Convention in Pasadena years ago. That was fun meeting all the Moz fans, some adorn with Moz tatoos etc. There is definitely a Morrissey cult following till this day. I am been listening to Belle & Sebastian, Gentle Waves, Secret Garden and Enigma. I tend to pull out some 80′s here and there or Sinatra, depending on my mood, lol. Favorite cd of all time is still Sugartax from OMD.

I listened to Britney’s Circus. It’s good, and I have to have a few more listens but it’s nearing Blackout good.
