NEW Casey James co-writes dug up by our own Windmills:

  • “These Hands” co-written by Casey James and Tom Douglas
  • “Get it Right” co-written by Casey James, Aimee Mayo and Chris Lindsey (Ascap)
  • “I Can’t Leave You Alone” co-written by Casey James, Jim Beavers, and Brett Beavers.

Tom Douglas cowrote “The House That Built Me” with Allen Shamblin, which has swept all the Song Of The Year awards in the country genre the past year. He’s also done a lot of writing for and cowriting with Lady Antebellum (I Run To You) and he’s also co-written with Carrie Underwood this year.

Brett Beavers worked a ton with Dierks Bentley’s first few albums as a cowriter and producer. He’s also producing Sunny Sweeney’s current hit singles and upcoming album. He’s the guy I’ve had my eye on as the best producer for Casey James’ debut (other than T Bone Burnett which is a pipe dream. Jon Randall would also be good and we know Casey’s written with him too).

Jim Beavers has written a lot with Dierks too, and he’s written songs for Billy Currington. He’s got a cut on Brad Paisley’s previous album and he also cowrote the awesome Blake Shelton/Miranda Lambert duet Draggin The River from one of Blake’s EPs last year. – Windmills

Casey’s debut album is set to be released later this year.

I almost forgot one thing. Where I live in IN we have an arena that seats 15,000 for concerts. The only acts that can fill that thing are old classic rock bands and country acts. We dont ever hear of pop or current rock bands being able to use that arena. Within the last few months we have had Kenny chesney, Kieth Urban, Brad Paisly. Billy Currington even with all his number ones is opening for Kenny.

Comparisons, comparisons. The land of American Idol. LOL.

Okay – I’ll bite just ’cause it’s Sat and I’m sitting here with some damn good coffee and it’s raining and I’m in my pjs and I might not do anything of any great importance today.

    So. I’ll bite.

Let’s start with our current reigning champs – the youngsters. Both have appealing personalities and have good voices. Both are not fully formed as artists or singers. Neither have shown any great originality on stage nor have either of them had any great moments. But they have been solid and are adorable. Thus, your results. Both will be signed by a country label. Both will release records quick because they are a curiousity right now “oh look at those cute kids” and AI will want to capitalize on this. Both will have some mountains to climb in getting any radio play. They might well sell some records on this AI fame… long-term careers in country music? Doubtful, IMHO.

Comparison to CaseyJ? These are kids, just starting out on a journey Casey’s been doing for twelve years. Their knowledge of country is surface, their knowledge of themselves is surface and their wisdom about the biz is surface. No comparison in my book and no competition for CaseyJ long term. Again. IMHO

Onto Allison – my fav of that year. Allison, too, was a youngster. She has an amazing voice (much better than Lauren or Scotty), but her record was spotty – as most rushed AI records are. She was not marketed well (I think she should have gone the band route) and thus she was dropped. But Allison is only nineteen. I don’t think this is the end of the road for her and I wouldn’t be surprised if she pops back onto a label at some point.

Comparison to CaseyJ? Allison didn’t have the maturity or moxie to position herself as the artist she wanted to be. Maybe she wasn’t sure what she wanted to be. CaseyJ knows exactly what kind of music he wants to do and exactly what kind of artist he wants to be. Again, no comparison.

And now we move onto the lovely Jason Castro, another of my favs. Who released his first CD in April 2010 – almost TWO years after he was on the show. Jason’s music is folky pop…not a lot of call for that on radio. So he didn’t get played. Jason is also a required taste in peformance style and in looks. This also hurt him, I think. So he’s still on his label, hasn’t been dropped and is now moving into Christian music – which might work well for him.

Comparisons to CJ? Casey is in country – a genre that does get played on radio. Granted his stuff looks like it’s going to be a bit dirtier and bluesy than what’s currently played but I think that might be where country is going. Look at Kellie Pickler’s new tune “Tough” which she says is dirty country. Casey also fits the ‘look’ of a country singer – he’s from TX, has the twang, wears the boots. I know that might be silly, but it does play into the picture. And ah, I would assume he’s not going to wait until next spring to release his music.

Okay. Back to my coffee and pjs.

BNA’s press release announcing CaseyJ’s signing indicated his album would come out in 2011.

ITA , I was about to say the same thing! Plus , here is the interview with him from last March it said the same thing .

Oh, wait! I missed Bo Bice in comparisions.

My favorite all time quote from Mr. Bice was when he was asked what he felt about his poppy first album Clive shoved on him. “”You can put a penguin in a mink coat, but it’s still a fuckin’ penguin.” Mr. Bice was biced. He did not have the clout or the confidence to stick to his guns and record his southern rock. I felt for him then, I feel for him now. He also had very serious health issues for several years after the show that limited his ability to record and promote. Again, sads.

CaseyJ has been given the chance to record what he wants his sound to be. He has not been biced. He is not sick. Now let’s see if it takes in the marketplace.

There’s this interesting theme in these comparisions, I think. If you don’t know what kind of artist you are, or are not willing to stand up and fight for your particular “brand” long term success is going to be tough.

Trying to take advantage of the name recognition factor is not the same as depending on the AI fanbase for sales, especially when the name recognition factor is used to reach people beyond the bubble.

Exactly, windmills. Thank-you for articulating so clearly what I garbled out. ;-) And thanks for all your stunning wisdom.

    2. Don’t be surprised if BNA’s publicists use the “From AI but unlike” angle in Casey’s PR. If they do I can only imagine how it’ll go over with some people here It could be lolzy.

Oh, my. LOL. That would turn the wolves lose around here.

Oh country music gods, assuming we don’t all perish at 6:00 pm this evening (I’m on the east coast so I’m going early!), please have a guest star appearance by Alison Krauss on Casey’s album. (And one with Patty Griffin, too, like Dierks Bentley did on his bluegrass ablum!) I know I sound greedy, but facing eternity has me considering what’s truly important in life.

THIS! I’m hoping ( & praying ) for a Bluegrass track(s) especially with someone like Alison Krauss ( with Casey playing Banjo or Mandolin ) :D
ITA with you car3278sweet as always :)

Ha! I forgot about the rapture today. Hm. Maybe I should get out of my pjs if I’m going to be meeting God later tonight. But I’m not putting on nylons, no way! ;-)

I think Patty Griffin would be a great duet for Casey. Hm. This is interesting to think about ’cause Casey’s voice is very… masculine, kind of rough. And it would really be a nice setoff for some of these country belles with the clear, pure voices.

The rapture better not happen before i get to hear CaseyJ’s new album. but if it does, and i still get to hear it, that’s when i’ll know i landed in the right place.

On a light news ( ;) ) they added the list of his upcoming shows to his official ( although it’s “under construction” , things won’t settle untill he releases music ) : http://caseyejames.com/

kinda off topic , but I really like my avi , Casey’s boot :P it’s like his ID :D

Hee! I fear where I’m going to end up. Send my love and regards to Casey!

car3278sweet, if not Patty or Alison, maybe Casey’s fave Mindy Smith!

ETA: Americana fans, Sarah Jarosz’s news single is the free song of the day on Amazon. CHECK HER OUT. She’s awesome (and from Texas).

I don’t know why people have such low predictions for Casey’s debut. He has a lot of AI fans.

At least he has the #1 Country market , TEXAS! :D

Yes, he does and they will play the heck out of him, I’m sure. I don’t think Casey should have any problem on radio-heck, authentic country according to some, a drawl, Texas love- there is no way he can lose.

He was my fave S9; although hearing what I’m hearing from him- I prefer his rock stuff more (I do understand why he has to countrify things up to get airplay), so I have come to like Crystal more. But I will buy his album and I think he will have a nice debut-since he will get a lot of radio play I think he will debut better than Lee.

I am very disappointed in the Idol top three this year.

I think Lauren shows promise, beautiful voice. Not a Scotty fan, but he is popular and despite the negativity from radio broadcasters I think those dreaded AI fans could give him a great newbie debut (Scotty should break Danny Gokey’s debut record, especially since Scotty will get mucho publicity. Or maybe Casey will even do that because of his cred and if he gets radio love and a hit).

There will be some crowding of Country by AI contestants- and no, Casey will not escape the label of former AI alum- LOL, country DJs and others aren’t dumb- they won’t forget that fact no matter how his management handles him. Carrie and Kellie haven’t , so I am sure Casey won’t either, despite the lengthy time from AI end to music.

But I know Casey is grateful for that dreaded AI fanbase- he knows they have given him this chance.

It would be great if Texas radio embrace his music. In an idol sense I dont think Casey has that much fans and he properly wouldn’t do better then Lee in his debut week. But that is alright for him, it will be more about getting radio play and trying to get country fans interested in his music. Hopefully his singles can get some radio play. I dont think any of the S9 contestants really had big fanbases, especially compared to some of the previous years. But I have to say that Casey’s fanbase although small atleast seems to be more committed to Casey then Lee’s fanbase (if you look around idol type of forums and sites). I think Crystal’s music actually sounds more country then Casey’s music, the only real country song he has produced so far is Show me a bridge. Although I suppose some of the slower songs like Lets dont call it a night and I lied can properly easy go through as pop country.

Oh my goodness. This looks good on Casey. I love love him and don’t care much about his album sale. All I know is that I will buy his album coz I want good music and more Casey James in my life :D

  • idol23

I am getting so excited about Casey’s record debut! I think that he will be happy to be able to make a living at what he loves doing the best! If he makes it big, that will just be icing on the cake!

  • bean99

I’m looking forward to Casey’s cd. He’s coming to Fort Worth (Billy Bob’s) and I need to talk my dh into going. :)
