New Alex Lambert Demo - Imperfectly Perfect

Check out the new demo from Season 9 semi finalist and If I Can Dream housemate, Alex Lambert.  It’s called “Imperfectly Perfect”.

Alex recently had the If I Can Dream cameras follow him to the Playboy Mansion, and he’s been busy co-writing with the likes of David Hodges, and others.  He also filmed a music video for his tune “I Didn’t Know.”

This new tune sounds a lot like “Dream with My Eyes Open.”   I really love Alex’s sound, but when he finally puts his record out, I hope it’s a little more eclectic than what we’ve heard so far.

UPDATE: Added official video from If I Can Dream

Damn him for having a name so close to Adam’s! I got so excited, lol! Oh, wells- I’ll check it out anyway cuz I kinda like him…….

I just love his voice and feel soothed by just about anything that he sings, but this song is too generic with cheesy lyrics. He kind of reminds me of Allison in that both of them are better than their songs, and they are just a really good hook away from being a star.

  • BootStar

Oh, Lord, is nobody available to co-write with besides David Hodges? All the great songwriters in the world and they keep reproducing the same ol’ sh*t.

  • tinawina

His voice is too… gritty?… for this light pop fluffy song. On someone else it might sound charming, but on him its seems like it’s too lightweight. He needs more gravitas to his songs IMO.

I totally agree with this. First Dave Hodges says he is going to work with Katie Stevens and now he is working with Alex Lambert. He better be careful because he is one Andrew Garcia away from being the next Ryan Tedder. Don’t get me wrong, I thought Crush was great when it was released in 2008 but surely there must be other writers out there?????

  • Studio57

I seriously don’t get the dislike for Ryan Tedder by some idol fans. Is it because of the Kelly/Beyonce thing? Because the guy to me is a genius and although the drum beats are a signature in his songs, I don’t think he puts out cheesy pop pablum like this song. Kelly and Beyonce’s songs were similar, yes, but both artists made a BUTTLOAD ( TM RCA MOD) of money off those songs. And I neveer heard one person outside the idol bubble complain about the songs sounding alike.

    LOOOOOOOOLL LOLLLLLLLLLLL

  • tinawina

And I neveer heard one person outside the idol bubble complain about the songs sounding alike.

Oh no, I’ve heard plenty of that type of thing way from the Idol bubble. Plenty.

One example: on the pop station here, around the time Already Gone came out, the morning show DJ introduced it as Leona Lewis’ “Happy”. When the other DJ called him out on it, he said “whatever, its the same song anyway”. Then he sang a few bars of Halo and burst into laughter. LOL

  • cristististi

I only listened to it once. His voice just doesn’t do anything for me. It’s fine, but I would definately switch the radio dial if this song came on. It’s just a reflex, like whenever they play a Miley song.

I agree, Sue. And for those of you not digging the song or production – - remember that this is strictly a demo. Alex will get the changes he wants if they go to full production/recording with this one. I think it’s young, like him, and very catchy. Though he has a much more important voice, he is only 19 and this type of romantic, sweet song is exactly where he is with relationships. And, btw, he has written with many other writers, not just the Idol factory crew.

    You’re joking, right?

Nope. Not in my little neck of the woods. I know there was a big brouhaha about it but like I said- they all made a shitload of money so why complain?

You want to hear blatant rip off- listen to Hello Good Morning and Carry Out side by side. Still- both songs $$$$ so who the hell cares? It’s still better than this crap that Alex is singing.

  • OldHag

This sounds like a good song for a 19 year old to sing. I can hear it on the radio.

And I neveer heard one person outside the idol bubble complain about the songs sounding alike.

No joking, not around here either.

  • BootStar

Nope. Not in my little neck of the woods. I know there was a big brouhaha about it but like I said- they all made a shitload of money so why complain?

Well, I guess it depends on you you define “idol bubble.” Are we talking about fans of the show or bloggers/reporters who cover artists who once were on Idol? I’ve seen plenty of references to the similarities between many of these Tedder-penned songs that cite Kelly, so technically that’s “inside” the Idol bubble, I suppose, but I’ve normally understood the “bubble” to mean folks directly involved in a show during a particular season or fans of the show who spend a lot of time on the Internets poring over information.

No joking, not around here either.

Where exactly is “around here”? Are we talking about MJs or the city where you live?

Everyone’s perceptions are going to be skewed by the media sites they frequent.

  • wonderings

Love Alex’s voice as usual, but this one is too overproduced for my tastes. It sounds like “Dream With My Eyes Open” because it was produced by the same people (Deekay).

I like the verses better than the chorus here; Alex has a great sense of rhythm & tempo.

  • tinawina

Ok, I know people like to toss around that “you people in the idol bubble don’t know what you are talking about” thing, but honestly… The Ryan Tedder/Kelly Clarkson/Halo controversy was widely covered, that was not an “idol media only” phenomenon. Not only that, but I have certainly heard complaints about Ryan Tedder before (Ditto Timbaland, Dr Luke, Stargate, Max Martin, any major pop producer for that matter) for producing manufactured sound-alike garbage. Maybe I just hang around too many music snobs? Visit too many music blogs? Because that stuff is common in my world. LOL

Anyway, with as many hits as he has had I am sure he is popular, but complaining about him is FAR from some “only those out of touch Idol fans do it” thing, in my opinion anyway.

  • BootStar

Do you consider the Backstreet Boys part of the “idol bubble”?

One producer on your last album This Is Us is OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder. He is in the news right now feuding with Kelly Clarkson over the “Already Gone” vs. “Halo” controversy – having apparently provided almost identical musical tracks to both Kelly and Beyonce. Did you check to make sure you’re the only group he offered that particular music to?

I’ve definitely heard about [the controversy]. I actually talked to Ryan about three or four days ago. He was telling me he’s dealing with all the stress and stuff. I told him, “Don’t worry, dude, I’ve got your back.” Absolutely, whatever he gives to us, he gives to us. It’s always been presented directly to us. Plus, he’s really good friends with us, so that helps.

    Backstreet’s Back… Alright!

    Because I don’t.

But this thread is about Alex, who — to my knowledge — is not writing with Ryan Tedder — yet!

I think Alex has a very cool voice and is a great singer. Not too impressed with the crap they’re giving him to sing, however. David Hodges has become a go-to guy for a lot of Idol alums.

  • JudyOhio

This newest demo is okay, average, eh, but the kid is a lot further along than if he had not gone into the IICD house. I still find his saga interesting to casually follow and who knows, he might just make it one of these days. He appears to work pretty hard on his music. So far, I like his “I Didn’t Know” song and do still like his “sound”. Would like to hear what he could do with something more uptempo. Anyway, like so many, he’s a work in progress, and I can’t help but wish him good luck.

  • jaybee

I think his voice lends itself to Pop/Soul,Or Pop/R&B,but this is a demo,so we’ll see.I do know that the fact that Alex is managed by 19M IS A BIG DEAL,and I do know that Fuller is really into him,as he is Alex’s personal manager. But,what is his game plan?Is he going to shop Alex around to the highest bidder,or have his records released under some new label, like Fuller/Sony,or Fuller/whatever? Who knows,I guess he wants us to stay tuned to his formulaic, soapy reality show to find out.

  • HotHotHot

So my other question is that if IICD house doesn’t work out will he drop Alex like a hot potato?

  • jpfan

Nice unique voice. Generic song but with 19 behind him, he might do okay.

  • Studio57

Bootstar, please reread my original post. I did not say no one ever mentioned the similarities, I said that I PERSONALLY have never heard anyone COMPLAIN that the songs were too similar. Didn’t they both go platinum? So obviously people weren’t too turned off by them.

I do agree that this thread is about Alex, though.

  • jaybee

On this demo-I re-listened,and it has a very good melody,BUT THEY NEED TO STRIP IT DOWN-Alex has a very cool, hip interpretation in his phrasing, and the producers on this demo,I discovered are Deekay-a Scandanavian group, and they are arranging this demo like ABBA,AND ITS OVERPRODUCED.It needs to be stripped down with a current HOT arrangement, and it may be Very good.

  • AIaddict

I really like his voice and the song isn’t bad. I will be keeping an eye on Alex and his music.

  • sdmama

Is Alex the first Idol that did not make it to the final and getting this much media coverage after the show? I can’t think of anybody else. While the final 10 are busy touring this summer, he is getting more work done in recording than the finalist :O

I didn’t know who Ryan Tedder was until Sleepwalker, but I think he writes nice songs. I certainly love Sleepwalker. Some songs may sound similar, but he is not forcing anybody to take his song.

This reminds me, for giggle, video of whole bunch of songs that can be sang like Don’t Stop Believing.

(sorry getting a bit off tangent, but this was funny…)

  • jaybee

But,I can see the other side of it-like tinawina said,he may need a song with more gravitas for his type of voice-I just listened to his Demo for -I DIDN’T KNOW- again, and its a more serious piece-his voice on it is very very distinctive a la Stevie Nicks, and she would never have done Puppy Pop,but she was older than Alex. They may have to tailor some of his songs toward a younger audience for now,and long term, change the strategy to gradually get more mature.

  • Dlynne

his voice on it is very very distinctive a la Stevie Nicks, and she would never have done Puppy Pop, but she was older than Alex.

Love that term. “Puppy Pop” is exactly what it sounds like. I love, love, love his voice and his phrasing but I don’t care for this song. He needs to sing songs that are a little grittier and a little more mature. I actually like the IICD theme song he recorded better. It’s surprising to me that Clear Channel Radio liked this one best.

I’d rather listen to Ryan Tedder’s songs than David Hodges’. I don’t care for this cheesy, overproduced crap. My teenagers don’t either. This sounds like a song the Jonas Bros. would record. Yuck.

If you are reading, Simon Fuller, please hook him up with some better writers.

  • jaybee

I think that Kara D. finally called one right -she said in week 2 of the semis that people would die to have that tone-producers,writers,and that we would all look back one day and say OMG,look where he came from, and that he would be a legend one day,in so many words.I used to diss Kara,as she is a sappy songwriter, but she is the ultimate insider-she’s a Pro producer,a PRO singer(an underrated one),and a songwriter…She deserves credit for seeing Alex’s promise early on…

  • MaryS-NJ

The song is perfect for Clear Channel because it fits right in with the JoBros and Demi Lovato, and not surprisingly I think it sucks. I do like the tone of Alex’s voice and I agree that he should be doing something less generic, but it’ll probably be a huge hit because it is generic. Sigh.

Is Alex the first Idol that did not make it to the final and getting this much media coverage after the show? I can’t think of anybody else. While the final 10 are busy touring this summer, he is getting more work done in recording than the finalist :O

This. And as a fan of some of the Top 10 who played by the rules the PTB set, to have only one of the semifinalists, just as unproven as the 12 who made the finals, to get this much publicity and promotion annoys me. I realize this is my problem and in the real world things aren’t fair and maybe Alex being eliminated was a Daughtry-level fluke and he will be the next biggest thing since sliced cheese, but it just makes me sad for the other finalist who are still waiting to hear if they’re going to be signed… and now I’m going to go sulk in a corner and hold my breath ’til I turn blue. Carry on.

Yeah it sure would suck to be Ryan Tedder. All that money and success must be a real burden ;-)

By no means am I saying Ryan Tedder is not successful. I will say that I preferred his stuff circa Apologize more than his more recent material which I find to be repetitive and same sounding. Same with Dave Hodges. I love Crush but not so much his recent stuff. Another example is Max Martin. What he did for Kelly Clarkson’s 2nd (?) album was incredible. What he did for Allison Iraheta just wasn’t as good, in my opinion. It’s not a problem unique to Idol’s “stable” of writers. I thought Timbaland did a great job on Nelly Furtado’s album a few years ago but his stuff got less and less interesting as time passed. So, my original point was why does Idol have to keep recyling the same writers for their winners/runners up? Is nobody else available? I thought David Cook’s decision to write with Chantal Kreviazuk, for example, was brilliant — fresh blood!

  • Dlynne

So, I have been listening to the four songs that Alex has on the IICD website and I have to say that I like the new one better today. I still don’t really care for Butterflies but the other three have been on repeat for an hour now.

I still think he needs some grittier material, though, perhaps more like what Gavin DeGraw produces. Maybe they could get Gavin to write for him.

  • areyouin

I actually like the IICD theme song he recorded better. It’s surprising to me that Clear Channel Radio liked this one best.

@Dlynne – It was actually his song “I Didn’t Know” that Clear Channel Radio liked the best. When Iain Pirie of 19 took the final production of “Dream With My Eyes Open” to Clear Channel, he decided to take “I Didn’t Know” along with him too. They ended up liking IDK better and decided to shoot the music video with the painted pianos exhibit in NYC – they called it a “film piece”. The IDK music video is expected to be released by the end of the month. The IICD Hulu episode from 7/6 documented some of the filming in NYC. It looks to be a really cool concept – can’t wait to see it!!

  • Soapbox0916

Technically, Alex co-writes on all of these, but his involvement varies a lot. Alex is doing co-writing all the time, it seems to be quite an ecclectic mix, but I do fear that TPTB are going to pursue the teeny bob pop sound with Alex from that mix. Alex has said his goal is to write/co-write 30 songs so that they have 10-15 to choose from.

Some of the songs that Alex writes all by himself are gritter like Brand New World. He had either his brother or friends rap on some of his own songs, Alex loves rap too, but Alex surprised me a while back on IICD in that Alex can himself rap and his tone sounds amazing while rapping. I wish they would pursue rapping more with Alex, but I bet TPTB would go with guest rappers for cred on Alex’s song instead of having Alex rap himself if they go that route.

I think Butterflies counts as all his. This was the song inspired by Ellen. He started to co-write with someone on Butterflies to finish it up and that did not work out, but then he finished it up on his own. Sadly I think he is moving away from some of his own songs that he wrote all by himself earlier.
