Check out the new demo from Season 9 semi finalist and If I Can Dream housemate, Alex Lambert.  It’s called “Imperfectly Perfect”.

Alex recently had the If I Can Dream cameras follow him to the Playboy Mansion, and he’s been busy co-writing with the likes of David Hodges, and others.  He also filmed a music video for his tune “I Didn’t Know.”

This new tune sounds a lot like “Dream with My Eyes Open.”   I really love Alex’s sound, but when he finally puts his record out, I hope it’s a little more eclectic than what we’ve heard so far.

On this demo-I re-listened,and it has a very good melody,BUT THEY NEED TO STRIP IT DOWN-Alex has a very cool, hip interpretation in his phrasing, and the producers on this demo,I discovered are Deekay-a Scandanavian group, and they are arranging this demo like ABBA,AND ITS OVERPRODUCED.It needs to be stripped down with a current HOT arrangement, and it may be Very good.

I really like his voice and the song isn’t bad. I will be keeping an eye on Alex and his music.

Is Alex the first Idol that did not make it to the final and getting this much media coverage after the show? I can’t think of anybody else. While the final 10 are busy touring this summer, he is getting more work done in recording than the finalist :O

I didn’t know who Ryan Tedder was until Sleepwalker, but I think he writes nice songs. I certainly love Sleepwalker. Some songs may sound similar, but he is not forcing anybody to take his song.

This reminds me, for giggle, video of whole bunch of songs that can be sang like Don’t Stop Believing.

(sorry getting a bit off tangent, but this was funny…)

But,I can see the other side of it-like tinawina said,he may need a song with more gravitas for his type of voice-I just listened to his Demo for -I DIDN’T KNOW- again, and its a more serious piece-his voice on it is very very distinctive a la Stevie Nicks, and she would never have done Puppy Pop,but she was older than Alex. They may have to tailor some of his songs toward a younger audience for now,and long term, change the strategy to gradually get more mature.

Love that term. “Puppy Pop” is exactly what it sounds like. I love, love, love his voice and his phrasing but I don’t care for this song. He needs to sing songs that are a little grittier and a little more mature. I actually like the IICD theme song he recorded better. It’s surprising to me that Clear Channel Radio liked this one best.

I’d rather listen to Ryan Tedder’s songs than David Hodges’. I don’t care for this cheesy, overproduced crap. My teenagers don’t either. This sounds like a song the Jonas Bros. would record. Yuck.

If you are reading, Simon Fuller, please hook him up with some better writers.

I think that Kara D. finally called one right -she said in week 2 of the semis that people would die to have that tone-producers,writers,and that we would all look back one day and say OMG,look where he came from, and that he would be a legend one day,in so many words.I used to diss Kara,as she is a sappy songwriter, but she is the ultimate insider-she’s a Pro producer,a PRO singer(an underrated one),and a songwriter…She deserves credit for seeing Alex’s promise early on…

The song is perfect for Clear Channel because it fits right in with the JoBros and Demi Lovato, and not surprisingly I think it sucks. I do like the tone of Alex’s voice and I agree that he should be doing something less generic, but it’ll probably be a huge hit because it is generic. Sigh.

This. And as a fan of some of the Top 10 who played by the rules the PTB set, to have only one of the semifinalists, just as unproven as the 12 who made the finals, to get this much publicity and promotion annoys me. I realize this is my problem and in the real world things aren’t fair and maybe Alex being eliminated was a Daughtry-level fluke and he will be the next biggest thing since sliced cheese, but it just makes me sad for the other finalist who are still waiting to hear if they’re going to be signed… and now I’m going to go sulk in a corner and hold my breath ’til I turn blue. Carry on.

He better be careful because he is one Andrew Garcia away from being the next Ryan Tedder.

Yeah it sure would suck to be Ryan Tedder. All that money and success must be a real burden ;-)

By no means am I saying Ryan Tedder is not successful. I will say that I preferred his stuff circa Apologize more than his more recent material which I find to be repetitive and same sounding. Same with Dave Hodges. I love Crush but not so much his recent stuff. Another example is Max Martin. What he did for Kelly Clarkson’s 2nd (?) album was incredible. What he did for Allison Iraheta just wasn’t as good, in my opinion. It’s not a problem unique to Idol’s “stable” of writers. I thought Timbaland did a great job on Nelly Furtado’s album a few years ago but his stuff got less and less interesting as time passed. So, my original point was why does Idol have to keep recyling the same writers for their winners/runners up? Is nobody else available? I thought David Cook’s decision to write with Chantal Kreviazuk, for example, was brilliant — fresh blood!

So, I have been listening to the four songs that Alex has on the IICD website and I have to say that I like the new one better today. I still don’t really care for Butterflies but the other three have been on repeat for an hour now.

I still think he needs some grittier material, though, perhaps more like what Gavin DeGraw produces. Maybe they could get Gavin to write for him.

@Dlynne – It was actually his song “I Didn’t Know” that Clear Channel Radio liked the best. When Iain Pirie of 19 took the final production of “Dream With My Eyes Open” to Clear Channel, he decided to take “I Didn’t Know” along with him too. They ended up liking IDK better and decided to shoot the music video with the painted pianos exhibit in NYC – they called it a “film piece”. The IDK music video is expected to be released by the end of the month. The IICD Hulu episode from 7/6 documented some of the filming in NYC. It looks to be a really cool concept – can’t wait to see it!!

Technically, Alex co-writes on all of these, but his involvement varies a lot. Alex is doing co-writing all the time, it seems to be quite an ecclectic mix, but I do fear that TPTB are going to pursue the teeny bob pop sound with Alex from that mix. Alex has said his goal is to write/co-write 30 songs so that they have 10-15 to choose from.

Some of the songs that Alex writes all by himself are gritter like Brand New World. He had either his brother or friends rap on some of his own songs, Alex loves rap too, but Alex surprised me a while back on IICD in that Alex can himself rap and his tone sounds amazing while rapping. I wish they would pursue rapping more with Alex, but I bet TPTB would go with guest rappers for cred on Alex’s song instead of having Alex rap himself if they go that route.

I think Butterflies counts as all his. This was the song inspired by Ellen. He started to co-write with someone on Butterflies to finish it up and that did not work out, but then he finished it up on his own. Sadly I think he is moving away from some of his own songs that he wrote all by himself earlier.
