NBC Exec: Miley Cyrus will be “Appropriately Dressed” on The Voice

A few interesting soundbites came out of the Hollywood Radio and Television Society’s “State of The Industry Panel” on non-scripted television which took place in Los Angeles on Tuesday (May 24). Executives who have worked on American Idol, The Voice, America’s Got Talent, The Apprentice and more gathered to discuss the state of reality television.

Considering the spate of rebooted series like Twin Peaks on Showtime, X Files on FOX and the upcoming CBS series MacGyver, could American Idol be brought back?

“Idol has finished for the moment,” said Trish Kinane who worked as a producer on both Idol and America’s Got Talent for Fremantlemedia North America. “Who knows, as Ryan [Seacrest] said at end of the finale,” in terms of it coming back.

Mike Darnell, president, Warner Bros. unscripted and alternative TV, who was FOX’s president of alternative programming during Idol’s fertile years spoke on the show’s ratings decline, which he called inevitable. He used a giant ocean liner to make his point. “Something that huge—once it starts to go down, it’s almost impossible to get back up,” he said. “As quickly as it went up it just starts to go down.”

Paul Telegdy, NBC entertainment president of alternative and late night spoke of  “shaking up”  The Voice, which will bring on two new females, Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys to join veteran coaches Adam Levine and Blake Shelton on the panel for the fall cycle. Telegdy referred to Miley as a “polarizing but very interesting artist,” whom he joked would be “appropriately dressed at all times.” Telegdy said the women would “counterbalance the Blake [Shelton] and Adam [Levine] Show.”

Telegdy had some interesting comments about NBC’s The Apprentice, and whether it  played a role in elevating former host Donald Trump to his position as presumptive GOP nominee in the US presidential race.

“Of course not,” said Telegdy, when asked if he felt Trump could have locked up a majority of the Republican primary votes without having appeared on TV for so many years.  “On Celebrity Apprentice and The Apprentice before it, master television production created a phenomenal television personality.”

Calling the current political situation “very, very peculiar,” Telegdy noted that people on his team were not shocked by the rise of Trump: “[It’s] no surprise to anyone who’s worked closely with him.” He also believes there is little difference between candidate Trump and reality show ringmaster Trump.
“His persona seems to have been in lockstep with his persona on the show,” he said.

A Brit, Telegdy joked, “I’ve got somewhere else I can go” if Trump secures the presidency.
