NBC Courts Ryan Seacrest for ‘Today’

Ryan Seacrest as Today Show host? According to The Wall Street Journal, he’s in talks with NBC Universal for the gig.

This all seems very preliminary and super iffy. First, Matt Lauer has to announce he’s leaving the Today show, and 2nd, Ryan would have to clear his already filled schedule to take the job. I would imagine he’d ditch the E! stuff. But, we’ll see.

Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal is pursuing Ryan Seacrest as a possible successor to Matt Lauer on the “Today” show, if Mr. Lauer vacates his co-anchor seat next year, according to people close to the company.

NBC executives—including “Today” show executive producer Jim Bell, NBC News President Steve Capus and its senior vice president for marketing and communications, Lauren Kapp—met with Mr. Seacrest on Tuesday evening to discuss the possibility of him joining the show, according to those people.

To be sure, the talks are preliminary and could fall apart at any time.

E!News is owned by NBCUniversal, so Ryan is actually already part of the NBC family so to speak. He’s been in talks with the Comcast over the past few months to figure out ways to enhance his role at the company.

Not too early to be getting the jump on filling Matt’s job if he is planning on leaving next year. They definitely cannot wait till the last minute. I think Ryan is a great person to do the job…he knows how to keep things moving and interesting on Idol…the guy is multi-talented.

NO!  Ryan needs to stay put on E News, American Idol, New Year’s Rock & Eve and his KISS stint out in LA.  Love him!!

I agree mj.  This is indeed super iffy.  I think his E! gig would be the most likely thing to go too.  It’s not like he doesn’t have a zillion jobs already. heh

Isn’t the Today Show all the way in New York? Hmm…or maybe they can move it to LA so he can stay on idol.

He would work; the show isn’t news any more.

No!  My favorite morning show.  I do not want a steady diet of R.S.  Seeing him on Idol is ENOUGH!  I would have to change to ABC.

The big negative about Ryan Seacrest – it’s his production company that is behind the Kardashians.

I could see Ryan being a good fit on the Today show. I do think that it would be too hard for him to do that and Idol, but at this stage he might be ready to move on. If that happened Nigel would need to pick up the phone and beg Cat Deeley to join the show.

Interesting timing–Ryan’s contract to do Idol expires after this next season. If the Today job is a real possibility, and he decides to leave Idol as a result, he would need to get it all in place before the cattle calls for Season 12’s auditions.

A zillion years ago started out disliking Ryan, but now I’ve come to realize how good he is at what he does.  I’d miss him a lot if he ever left Idol.

I don’t know how Ryan could do Idol and the Today show. They are both live shows on opposite coasts. If he left Idol I would be very sad. I think he is one of the parts of Idol that can not be changed…. unless it was for Cat!

I like Ryan on idol and he’s a good host but he has enough jobs.  Billy Bush who hosts Access Hollywood is a great host and interviewer, who is spontaneous and has friendly rapport – he deserve bigger shows like taking over on Today’s show, or from Regis when he leaves his show.  People need to appreciate that guy’s skill more.  I didn’t even know he was related to president Bush cause he comes across regular and not stuck up like some.  And since he has a political background and studied it too he’ll be flexible with doing the entertainment, and political/serious interviews aspect of Today’s show.

I love Matt Lauer. Ryan annoys the hell out of me. He strikes me as being very shallow and mean spirited. As previously mentioned, he’s responsible for bringing us the Kardashians along with a slew of other bottom feeding shows.

would Ryan do this from L.A.? I would guess that he would have to drop a lot of his current work if he had to be in NY to do Today Show. He could still have his syndicated radio show, as he could do that from NY, but he might have to drop the E! and the local KIIS work. And of course he’d have to figure out a way to juggle flying to LA to host Idol (unless he quits that)

then there’s all the producing stuff he does. I don’t know how he’d find time to do all this, since it seems like the Today Show gig would require a lot of prep hours. But I do think he would do a good job if he got this position.
