Produced by Lionsgate, ABC Studios and Opry Entertainment, Nashville makes its triumphant season five debut on CMT with Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz (the creators of Thirtysomething) at the helm, returning with a special two-hour premiere on Thursday, January 5 at 9pm ET/PT. Streaming partner Hulu will continue to bring fans new episodes by making them available to stream the day after they air on CMT.

A full 22 episodes has been ordered by the studio.

According to Entertainment Weekly, however, Rayna Jaymes is likely to exit in season 5. Star Connie Britton has only signed on for about 10 episodes of the new season. One source close to the show insisted to EW that they still remain hopeful they’ll get Britton on board for more and that the deal is not yet final. Co-star Hayden Panettiere is fully on board said the source. Actors Will Chase and Aubrey Peeples were previously reported as leaving ahead of season 5.

Plot-wise for the new season, TV Guide reported that season 5 will have Rayna crossing paths with a wealthy app developer who wants to introduce her music to a new generation, but that he also “has other, more nefarious plans for her.”
