Check out a sneak peek at “Undermine,” a song that will be performed on this week’s episode of Nashville by Hayden Panettiere as Juliette Barnes and Charles Esten as Deacon Claybourne.

In real life the song is cowritten by Kacey Musgraves (currently getting rave reviews and approaching t30 at country radio with her buzzy single “Merry Go Round”) and Trent Dabbs. Musgraves and Dabbs are both featured in the ABC video talking about how the song came together. Panettiere and Esten as well as several show execs talk about the major role “Undermine” has in the episode.

BONUS: Check out cowriter Kacey Musgraves’s awesome version of the song!

Are you likely to buy this track when it comes out on Itunes tomorrow? Does “Undermine” make you more excited to see episode 2 of Nashville this Wednesday at 10 PM Eastern on ABC?

This week’s episode will also feature Hayden Panettiere singing a song called “Telescope” cowritten by hit country songwriters Hillary Lindsey and Cary Barlowe (who cowrote Lady Antebellum’s #1 hit “American Honey” and Carrie Underwood’s “Do You Think About Me,” both with Shane Stevens) which is going to be the single pushed to country radio by Big Machine Label Group. Also featured in the episode will be a song called “If You’re Gonna Love Me” cowritten by Pete Sallis, Oliver Lieber, and Jamie Floyd.

UPDATE: Check out a 59 second clip of Hayden Panettiere singing “Telescope” (thanks Broadway’s Electric Barnyard!)

I really like ‘Undermine’. ‘Telescope’ sounds like a Carrie Underwood song.

I didn’t get around to commenting on the ‘Nashville’ thread last week. But I’m super impressed with it. The cinematography is absolutely stellar, as is every other aspect of the production. It’s so nice to have a real show to look forward to watching.

I predict them to sweep the Emmy’s when the time comes.

I have to wonder if Kacey was heavily influenced by Nanci Griffith they are both from the same area of Texas.  I find a very similar writing style and sound to their songs.  Nanci is one of my favorite performers so I like Kacey’s music as well she is a talented writer with a great voice it will be interesting to see if she takes off in country music as her sound is a folk /country blend.

Yeah, Telescope sounds like it’s trying to be a Carrie/Miranda sassy song. Ultimately I think it doesn’t go over as well because of the vocals. Hayden isn’t a terrible singer but, she isn’t a particularly good one.

I love Undermine. I actually kind of like Hayden and Charles’s phrasing on their version which brings a different feel to it but, Kacey’s version is special.

It sure seems like it doesn’t it? I don’t think I’ve ever heard Kacey talk about Nanci Griffith but I’d be surprised if Kacey weren’t familiar with her music.

Anyone have any idea what happened to the other song mentioned above, “If You’re Gonna Love Me”, cowritten by Pete Sallis, Oliver Lieber, and Jamie Floyd?Curious to hear that one too.
