I thought of P2 the whole time and how much more cookie cutter he must seem to the public compared to M&S. They were really intense and looked like they just wandered in from the woods onto the SNL set.

  • suenigma

There isnt a lot of variety to Mumford and Sons’ sound, TBH, but fortunately i love their sound, and they do it so well. I really enjoyed them last night.

Isn’t there someway we can make Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s “monologue” relevant to American Idol? :)

  • durbesque

The only P2 song that is remotely like Mumford is “Home”, and even that is in a different league entirely to my ears.  It wasn’t easy to listen to the 2 clips above to the end, but I did it to be sure of what I was hearing.  Now I don’t ever have to listen to M again.

  • elliegrll

The public that won’t allow Home to fall below the top 15 on Itunes?

I think that the same thing was said about Daughtry in comparison to Nickelback, but their first album showed that people loved that style of music.

  • angiedb

Love Mumford & Sons! Loved seeing them on SNL last night. They looked hysterical as The Beatles. lol

I feel sorry for P2. Years and years being inspired and trying to learn everything about Dave Matthews and the way he performs, and now, only because of a hit song TPTB gave him, he’s only being compared with Mumford & Sons. lol

  • too-cool-for-school

So good. This is a band I want to see stay strong and see stick around for many years to come. Hopefully the new album will be a big hit!

‘Below My Feet’ was my favorite of the two performances but both were great! I don’t think they need to tamper with their sound either. If they did, I feel like they would run the risk of getting watered down and losing their edge.

We already have so many pop and ‘alternative’ takes on folk music, where they feel like genuine folk-rock. It’s refreshing and they do it well, so I’m glad they’re sticking with that.

I never said P2 wouldn’t find a following due to his cookie-cutterness. I was simply trying to say that P2 must seem a lot more mainstream to the public compared to M&S. That can be to his benefit in a way because there are some people who might find M&S just a little too “out there” and “weird” for them while Home coming from P2 would be a lot more digestible. But there will also be some for whom P2 is a little too clean cut.

Home is a good song and a gold mine but pales in comparison to the intensity and depth of Below My Feet.

  • too-cool-for-school

Butting in somewhat, but I understand what you’re saying.

To a crowd that may strictly listen to pop music or other genres, ‘Home’ was probably very unique with it’s Mumford-ish sound qualities, but without the more severe lyrics and true folk sound.

So while the M&S fans (me included, ha) would discuss the similarities, people that don’t know them wouldn’t have those assessments or comparisons to make and ‘Home’ would be exciting or interesting to them.

And it’s a really good song, it is obviously just a lot more pop than Mumford. Could be considered cookie-cutter, too.

M&S are a talented and distinctive band.  I first heard of them maybe a couple of years ago with Little Lion Man or whatever that song was called.  And they won a grammy that year I think too.  So Home with its guitar work and harmonies is very similar in sound but I LOVE Home and I haven’t loved any of the M&S songs that I have heard thus far. Under My Feet is very cool but it doesn’t resonate like Home does.

Marcus Mumford has incredible songwriting skills and his voice is a perfect instrument for the songs he writes. Husky, intense, melancholy. I think he and his band will be around for a long time.

Phillip? Well, so far he’s shown me he certainly has a distinctive way of delivering a song (not a dig, but not a compliment either). The turning point for him is if he can get material that expresses his views with depth (like Mumford) and that also fits his gritty voice. That’s a big hurdle. i wish him well.

  • Incipit

…only because of a hit song TPTB gave him, he’s only being compared with Mumford & Sons. lol

But the songwriter did that on purpose, Leandro – he tells THR – The distinct Mumford & Sons feel was no accident either. “I do love Mumford,” Pearson confesses. “I also like Arcade Fire and there’s some of that, too, along with a few Irish bands that influenced it.”

It was initially sort of a custom write for Greg Holden, with those influences and intentions. I suppose Jimmy Iovine felt it was a sound that would work for Phillip’s voice, and it may have started him off in a different musical lane than he prefers, but  I guess that happens to every winner, even one who gets a “real” song, as opposed to a formula feel-good Coronary.

Interscope is doing better than Sony did, thus far (not counting that ‘thing’ they gave to Jessica) – but I hope they keep tweaking their approach, and getting closer to the actual style of the winner with these choices.

There’s no reason the winners can’t keep having successful Coronation songs, if they stop being treated like just a souvenir.

    IMO. Of Course.

  • CircadianDomination

Love M&S. Their album leaked last week and it’s awesome. It’s not different at all from their first album, but I love their general sound. “Babel,” “Holland Road,” “Broken Crown,” “Hopeless Wanderer,” and “Below My Feet” are all great tracks.

    Where did P2 say:
being inspired and trying to learn everything about Dave Matthews and the way he performs??????

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XDQP2Y46M5B3OHOKALDDGDHQCM Leandro

He never said it. He doesn’t need to.

  • ri2

I want Phillip himself to be on SNL so baddd!

  • Incipit

brightones, Perhaps the most Philip said about it was in his last interview – when he was asked about being compared to Dave Matthews: “I love Dave! He’s one of my heroes,” he professed. “He’s an amazing writer and his band is amazing so I take it as a compliment. Our original stuff is different from one another. I’m not as complex; he’s got some pretty complex, crazy things going on. He’s an amazing guy, such a nice guy.”

But people who are fans of DM recognized the many similarities in performance style and sound from the beginning of the season, and posted about it here. I’ll believe they would know, I’m not a fan.

Still, I think the story has actually been furthered the most by Dave Matthews himself, when he commented  - “…I wouldn’t imagine that imitating me would bring any quality of popularity, but that’s okay if it does.” So this town is big enough for the both of them? ”Oh, I don’t feel threatened. I am what I am,” Matthews laughed. “Maybe I paved the way for him. I wish him the best of luck! He should kick my ass, [then] maybe I can retire and he can take over my band.”

Obviously, DM had heard about it too, since he commented on being imitated.

With the Pearson/Holden Mumford sounding “Home”, Phillip is being pointed in another direction, for the moment.

    JMO. Of Course.

For someone whose entire brand revolves around being carried away in the music, MM’s eyes look really dead and dull in close-up.

I still really like some of their songs but I suspect that what would really engage me as an audience member and what really engages them as performers are not the same things. It’s cool; they don’t need me.

  • too-cool-for-school

One word; nerves. I’ve never seen him appear that nervous before.

For a show (SNL) that does nothing very well in my opinion, they put a lot of stock and pressure on their musical guests I think. And singing live on TV would be nervewracking for anyone that isn’t used to it, as I get that dead-in-the-eyes sense from a lot of performers on the show.

Not really trying to argue your point, just saying. Him being a bit off/nervous was an observation I had, especially w/ the first song.

  • Dlynne

They were nervous. If you bomb on SNL, people have a long memory of it.

Marcus broke one of his guitar strings right before the performance, too. That’s always nerve wracking.

I love this band. They really get into their performances, sometimes to the exclusion of the audience, but that’s a quality I like about them. They play music they love, and if other people like it, that’s great but other’s opinions won’t define them. I love that they are authentic.

    The album drops at midnight!

Really enjoyed these. I like Mumford & Sons. SNL stopped being funny long ago, but they still showcase good music. I may just go watch this now.
