I watched Canadian Idol this season where they allowed instruments and it totally sucked. First of all, you can't tell how good a person's voice is when they are singing while playing a guitar or whatever. the acapella auditions are so much better. If it is an advantage, thats a plus. Shows a better rounded performer. Its not going to help them sing any better, though, so they still have to have the voice. The only disadvantage that I can see, is that they might get more people auditioning that can only play an instrument, that might think they can get through on that alone.
