If they are going to do this, then they should (a) be up-front about it, and (b) make it an even playing field, because watching Melinda Doolittle outclass the entire field every week last year got really, really old fast. If it’s going to happen, I’d rather it be wide-open than just 1 or 2 pros.

Something about these people with previous big label experience just doesn’t sit well with me. Maybe it’s the way AI is handling it – not quite as honest as they should be. I think if there wasn’t something a little bit sleazy about it, the previous contracts would be mentioned by the judges – instead they make these people out to be “nobodys coming from nowhere”. They mentioned Melinda’s professional experience last year, didn’t they? And they mentioned that girl’s experience as Taylor’s backup singer? Why not mention the previous big label experience? Like……”I see you previously had a major label contract, but it didn’t work out so it looks like you’re here to get a career going through AI, blah, blah, blah.” Why hide it?

If the idea is that previously they only sing in the shower the show would have not lasted two seasons instead of seven. If we had a bunch of high school musical kids (and would they be allowed, lol) would it be watchable for millions? The idea of a last chance, or a first chance for stardom is what makes this show work. Not every polished star outshines a diamond in the rough, and that is the beauty of the show.

American Idol -conotation it created of having unknown talent that they find on the show. So it raises an eyebrow for some when the talent on the show had a record deal or on tv before.

I really don’t understand why this is such a big deal. These contestants are not currently with labels. Frankly, I want to see talent and could care less if they have previous experience or even if they had past record deals. Honestly, I think this is all ado about nothing. Some people just have the desire to stir up trouble.

I agree with Igetcranked. This is going to be a big SCANDAL for Idol, wait and see. And when Howard Stern gets ahold of it — boy! It’s one thing to be in a band that kicks around the country like Daughtry and Constantine or Bo…it’s another to be professionally managed and on a label….and it’s even worse when the judges KNOW! When they ask them questions they didn’t say, “I see here where you were on Arista”…..okay? What about those who waited in the cold, who are the church choir singers, or the pizza boys who can sing who got passed over because of the professionals? Not fair!

In their quest to find a “star” they’re going back to the well again.

Gee.
I think what bothers me most about this is the fact that they (ringers) have had a chance to be polished. When they perform they will sound and look so much more professional to begin with. The lure of AI to me is watching people look awkward and grow with each performance.
