I asked this in the headlines thread, but maybe someone can answer here. What did AM radio circa 1974 mean?

    Secondly, who is Steve Warren?

  • tinawina

    Yay Brooke!!!!!!!! Can’t wait.

AC, As far as Archie/Demi, Disney sells concert tickets, he has more cred outside the mouse driven world. LOL. Works out for them both, I think.

I have no interest in hearing Rueben’s record. I feel kinda guilty about that. :down_tb:

sma11ie, I have no idea who Steve Warren is, but he sure sounds pissy. Ha.

  • jammasta

Archie with Demon Lovato. Bleh. I still think Archie’s better than everyone they’re putting him with, but whatever.

Brookalicious, I’m somewhat excited for this. She was one of my favorites last season. I’m more excited for Jason, though, but this should be really good, too. Piano is great.

I loved Ruben in Season 2, but I dunno anymore. I’ll give this a listen, I hope it’s great, unlike that Sorry 2004 song, that was pretty bad.

Lakisha Jones was one of my favorites in Season 6, I should like this.

Brandon Rogers….. All I remember is he forgot the words.

  • SpenserJ

I asked this in the headlines thread, but maybe someone can answer here. What did AM radio circa 1974 mean?

I think this quote is meant to indicate that whole female, singer-songwriter vibe of the early 70′s (i.e. Carly Simon, Carole King, etc.). I don’t even know if either of them charted that year – but I would guess their hits of the 2 or 3 previous years were still getting ample play every day in 1974. (I was a preschooler then – so I’m not answering this from memory – just guessing).

I think Steve Warren is just what it says he is – a programing director for a country radio station. I don’t think it’s a name you’re supposed to recognize. Sadly, I think there are a lot of program directors who feel that way about AI contestants. It’s why the ones without a huge label push falter on radio. They can’t get their songs past the PD’s.

    ETA:

Archie with Demon Lovato. Bleh. I still think Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s better than everyone theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re putting him with, but whatever.

Archie’s got pipes, no doubt. He’s not really my thing, but I can see that his voice is pretty superior to the girls they have him pairing up with. However – those Disney TV stars sell tickets. Even when they haven’t yet sold that many albums. Demi is going to bring people in the door. David wouldn’t be able to fill those venues himself.

I understand the dred David’s fans feel with him being constantly paired up with these Disney chicks. But he’s YOUNG. And, if he wants to have a long career, creating loyalty with a fan base of 11 – 13 year old girls is really not a bad thing.

1974 top Hits….Pretty bland, but I could sing you a few bars of 90% of the stuff. Disco, just starting up. Rock doesn’t show up. This was the John Denver and Olivia Newton John Era with a bit of early Elton John. Nixon is president and Watergate is starting up.

  • Jolene

What did AM radio circa 1974 mean?

That it’s not likely to become a smash hit in 2009? :confused_wp:

Just saw this promo for Michael Johns’ new album… Are they really re-using an old Idol photoshoot for his album cover? Also, appearantly half his album is recycled tracks from his pre-AI solo album. Oh well, I guess it cuts costs.

  • ptslittlecomment

I don’t know if this is the Steve Warren referred to in the article,
    http://www.mormedia.biz/steve_warren_bio.htm,
but if it is, he should know his business.

    A portion of his bio.

“From 1999 to 2003, he implemented 5 country channels for Sirius Satellite Radio and was the first voice ever broadcast on Sirius (2001), later conducting over 100 artist interviews in all genres of music and entertainment. Since 1987, Steve has served as President of MOR Media International, Inc. an entrepreneurial media/entertainment company, developing, hosting and distributing radio programming, station consulting, cable channel development, hospitality and special events, city tours, and theatrical productions.”

He might have, but Demi’s more well-known with the teen/tween set, which appear to be where they’re marketing him for the time being. At least it gets him publicity, but I wish they could find someone better for him to open for.

  • Tess

    Michael Johns…who?

Sorry, loved the Mavid but the Aussie never clicked with me.

  • sma11ie

Thanks for the top hits link, Tess. Recognize a few, but not too many… anyway, hopefully Brooke’s song is good and does well cuz I like her a lot.

  • abbysee

I loved Ruben in Season 2

Give it a listen. Sorry 2004 was the worst song on that cd. I always wonder who the hell picks the first single because imho they almost always get it wrong! From Kelly to Archie to Cook, the first singles are never the best, or even the next to the best song…..maybe to get us to buy the entire cd, no in the land of itunes! For what it’s worth, Ruben is still one of the best R&B crooners today. Too bad this wasn’t his first or second cd. Thanks for posting this MJ, TVTB did get lost in the post idol shuffle ;)

I am not worried about David A, he is having the time of his life. Living, learning and performing. You don’t just pop up and become Jason Mraz,or John Meyer, even they were works in progress at 18. Maybe they didn’t go the disney route, but he just can’t work the cafe circuit anymore. He’s not an anonymous musician, he’s SCREAM David Archuleta, SCREAM!

Was the Warren twitter a praise or diss of Brooke? Doesn’t really matter to me, love Brooke’s sunny personality, but that song she sang on idol pretty much bored me……and this is coming from an idol nut who buys almost every idol’s first single…..hell I even brought Phil Stacey’s If You Didn’t Love Me, lol.

Just listened to Brandon Rogers’ (had no idea who he was before this thread) new tracks on his my space page. My opinion… not good.

  • heart2

Well, Aussie Michael Johns sure clicked with me..Can’t wait to get his CD.

By the way who won S7..didn’t watch after Michael left!

  • smartcookie

I graduated from high school in 1974. “Tapestry,” which came out in 71, was still charting in 1974, plus Carole King had “Wrap-Around Joy” out in 74. My class chose “You’ve Got a Friend” as our class song, with “Imagine” as the runner-up. Also big at that time: “Nights in White Satin” and “Color My World,” which were prom themes EVERYWHERE that year. Oh, and the band (Ides of March) that had a hit with “Vehicle” (which Bo Bice famously covered on AI) actually played at my prom in 74.

I don’t know if that gives you the 1974 vibe, and I don’t know why the writer chose 74 when 70-72 are probably the quintessential years for the soft rock singer/songwriter stylings of Carly Simon (“That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be” was out in 71, for example), Carole King (“It’s Too Late” and everything else on “Tapestry” and “Music”), Cat Stevens (“Wild World,” “Moonshadow”), James Taylor (“Fire and Rain”), Jackson Browne (“Doctor My Eyes”), Don McLean (“American Pie”), CSN&Y (“Woodstock,” “Teach Your Children”) and Elton John in his early, more contemplative years (“Your Song,” “Tiny Dancer”). I’m guessing that’s the mood the writer thinks Brooke’s single captures.

  • gingerly

Smartcookie, thanks. I also graduated high school in 1974. Those songs and albums you mentioned bring back lovely memories, so much more so than the top songs of 1974 that somebody posted. Those (most anyhow) have no memory for me. But then I didn’t listen to Top 40 in 1974 and I don’t listen to it now.

I don’t think that was a question meant to be answered….my guess it was to prove a point. That would be a sour grapes kind of point to me. I mean anybody posting on MJ’s would absolutely know who won last year. While Michael Johns (and obviously some of his fans) thinks he should have won, America thought differently (and a big hallelujah from me). For me, Michael Johns sang exactly one amazing song. I’d give top 5 over him any day of the week. To me, he had so much promise and never delivered. He left the competition exactly in the right place.

I’m excited for Archie’s digital bundle! I hope “Zero Gravity” is a better and different recording then the one that was released.

Bingo gingerly..But it’s always OK when you and Tess Trash other Idols here! Right MJ

  • gingerly

Sorry, Heart, but I don’t trash anybody. I say it as I see it. That is all. If I don’t agree with you, am I trashing? What exactly is your criteria for “trashing” anyhow? I think saying stuff like he’s ugly, or he beats his wife would be trashing. I think saying stuff like he didn’t live up to his promise is an opinion.

    Have a great day :)

  • SpenserJ

LOL Sunn, that is much better. (Of course I’m kidding – you’re totally allowed to say when you don’t like stuff – in fact, I encourage it!).

This is an interesting little concept to me. Kind of like a mini revenue generator that also attempts to keep you in people’s minds while you’re working on album #2. I’ll be interested to see how it does. I find it intriguing as a marketing concept. I’m especially curious to see it from the standpoint that David’s fans were pretty vocal about wanting that Zero Gravity track. I’m interested to see what happens when you give the fans what they want and then some. Also, if it appeals to people who may not be fans yet.

  • oceana

What did AM radio circa 1974 mean?

I took this as a put-down of Brooke’s music, like it’s old. AM radio didn’t have the same respect as FM either.

Putdowns like this annoy me because of the inherent bias against music that is, oh I don’t know, pretty, sweet, feminine, or something? I mean, it’s so politically correct to like urban r&b, like they would never say anything snide about Ruben’s music for instance, even though he has not sold that many cds in all these years and personally I’ve never liked his music, but you know, he’s urban so he’s got to be cool. I just hate the bias in favor of urban music, rap, hiphop, ugh, I’m sick of it. It’s shoved down our throats. Okay sorry for the rant.

I haven’t heard Radio Radio so maybe they’re right to put it down, but I’ll wait to hear it. Her first single was very pretty, very melodic and lovely to listen to, but I think the words and message weren’t appealing.

  • SpenserJ

    What exactly is your criteria for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“trashingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ anyhow?

Not that this is any of my business or anything…. but I think in general, words like “trashing” or “bashing” or “haters” are code-words meant to marginalize an opinion that one may not agree with. I guess sometimes it’s just easier to believe that an opinion has no value if you can ascribe some kind of secret agenda to it.

Sometimes, peeps just don’t like who you like. There may be no other motivation for that, other than they simply don’t dig what that person is putting out there. Most of the time, an opinion is just an opinion. But it’s not always easy to recognize that.

  • JudyOhio

Has i-tunes sold these little Fan Packs or digital bundles before (like DA is putting out). And if so, does the bundle count as an album or do the songs count as the singles? With the music videos, EPs, albums, singles, and now Fan Packs, it’s hard to know how to track their progress. (which is a little something I like to do, lol)

  • gingerly

Thanks, SpenserJ, but I absolutely knew that. I ‘m so much more interested in hearing the explanation of those who spew the words. I just want certain people to get to a place where they can figure out the words they are spouting.

  • bubbles

While I can’t wait for Michael’ album, I am definitely not thrilled with that album cover. Sorry, Michael!
As far as the ‘recycled tracks’, even though I would have liked more new material, I reminded myself that this pre Idol album was never actually released, so I’m more than happy to pay for reworked versions of songs that I never paid for in the first place. :wink_wp:

And just to add my two cents in on the ‘trashing and bashing’ subject… Yes, an opinion is not bashing, but I think there are a lot of us who don’t think much of some favorite past AI contestants, but keep our opinions to ourselves at times. Why? One of the reasons…it makes people feel bad when someone says something negative about people they like. But honestly, it doesn’t bother me personally, because no one is going to change my mind about who I like!

Was Archie’s first single Crush? Yeah, to be honest that song wasn’t his type, and it kinda shows when he sings it. Not a terrible song, but the chorus has a bit of a strange melody, it’s a bit dreadful to sing at parts. Not a terrible song, though. ALTNOY was better, still a bit odd. Touch My Hand seems better, I thought Archie did a good job performing that song this season. But other than that, I honestly feel they turned him from awesome, soulful balladeer to tweeny blandness. He’s still okay, but he could be better than he is right now. At least he’s more confident.

  • Jolene

I get him wanting to make money for tracks he already invested in, but it sucks for the fans. I have a good friend who’s an MJ fan, and she was sorely disappointed after waiting over a year for his album, to find out she’d only get 5 new original tracks (since one is a Bee Gee’s cover and 6 are from his old album). It’s his prerogative, but I get those who are disappointed. I guess the non-fans will never know the difference anyway, and most fans will accept it, so in the end it shouldn’t really effect his sales one way or the other.

cruzceleste, I’ve been worried about you. I thought the earthquake did something bad to you. Anyhow, I’m glad to see you here. It’s been a while as far as I know. Ummm I thought you are in Honduras…maybe I’m wrong.

  • TKat

I asked this in the headlines thread, but maybe someone can answer here. What did AM radio circa 1974 mean?

It means that the writer either doesn’t know anything about 1974 (my guess) or it’s an insult (I doubt it). AM radio and the Top 40 was a wasteland in 1974.

Music in 1974 was really segmented, but dynamic. AM was dominated by AC, disco started to breakthrough the Top 10, progressive album-oriented rock dominated FM. 1974 is also the first time that underground music got airplay on college stations and East Coast FM — this alternative rock music evolved into New Wave/Punk by 1976.

    The Top 10 hits for 11/4/73 – 11/3/74:

    10. Seasons In The Sun – Terry Jacks
    9. Jazzman – Carole King
    8. You’re Sixteen – Ringo Starr
    7. Cats In The Cradle – Harry Chapin
    6. When Will I See You Again – Three Degrees
    5. Haven’t Got Time For The Pain – Carly Simon
    4. I Honestly Love You – Olivia Newton-John
    3. (I’ve Been) Searchin’ So Long – Chicago
    2. Time In A Bottle – Jim Croce
    1. The Way We Were – Barbra Streisand

In the late 60′s the FCC enacted a non-duplication rule prohibiting FM radio stations from merely running a simulcast of the programming from their AM counterparts, so to fill up the airspace, some station owners let the DJ’s pick what to play. 1974 was just about the peak Freeform, Progressive and unscriped Album-Oriented Rock FM (some in broadcast in quadraphonic stereo) — they played all kinds of music — Aerosmith, Jefferson Starship, Bad Company, Bruce Springstien, Styx, Led Zep, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Neil Yound, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Bowie, Queen, Zappa, and on and on. For a few shining years, many DJs had the freedom to chose what track(s) to play off a given album, the latitude to decide what order to play the records in and sometimes played a whole album. Often stations has a late night show, 11PM or so, that featured one album.

Here’s a good list of the best 100 albums of 1974 (not a bad year):

khomphuong, THANKS for sharing the David with REO Speedwagon vid! It gave me chills! There simply are NO WORDS to describe David’s talent!!! He steps on stage and belts THAT out??? …no doubt without any warning! What can you say?

I think this side of David is what so many of us older fans cherish in him and may even cause some of the discontent with his exposure to date…especially to the Disney Crowd.

But you know what? As I watched the audience react to David as he vocally-jousted – or whatever you call it – with the Reo lead singer, I realized that he’s gaining more and more fans no matter where he performs, no matter what he performs. He wowed the Brits with Angels, a song I read over and over that he shouldn’t sing in the UK because of how they revere it.

Spencer, I think you hit the nail on the head…he’s building loyal fans whever he goes, and we don’t need to worry about him! Just enjoy the ride! I sure am!!! :D

p.s. glad to hear you are safe, celestecruz! I don’t post often, but I read everything I can…and thought of you when I heard about the earthquake!

  • oceana

Yes I believe that Brooke’s releasing a 2nd single, that was her first one, which wasn’t really a single per say I guess.

About Archie, as an objective non-fan who likes him and appreciates his talent, I think Jive has the right approach. Archie sang mature ballads on the show, but he indicated several times that he wanted to sing current music and he seemed to favor pop/r&b sounds. Also, he is young, and socially young for his age (even if in some ways he may have an old soul), he appeals to tweens, and so I think Jive is marketing him correctly, also I think it’s the direction he himself probably wants to go in, judging from indications he gave on the show.

The songs they sing on the show are not what they are going to do after the show ends. Kelly didn’t put out a cd of songs like “Stuff Like that There” or Whitney Houston or Aretha Franklin. I loved David Cook’s covers on Idol, but that’s not the kind of cd he put out, and on his tour he’s singing a lot harder rock than anything he did on the show.

I know DA has older fans (I’m older too) who loved those ballads but I honestly don’t think that’s the direction he wants to go in, as he is, there is no denying it, a young kid, and he wants to be contemporary.

  • lurksalot

Well, Aussie Michael Johns sure clicked with me..Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t wait to get his CD.

By the way who won S7..didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t watch after Michael left!

    That.

  • oceana

She could do well on AC, but thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pretty much it IMHO. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to be wrong because I do think she has something special. Her type of music simply isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the type that gets mainstream airplay nowadays, sadly.

True, but then again, if she did well on AC, that would be a fine career too. She really does have something special, but I don’t know how contemporary her song choices will be. Then again like you said, we haven’t heard the cd yet so we might be surprised.

I just think that if there are more current songs on the cd, I don’t understand why they chose that last single to lead out with, since it’s really old-ladyish, no matter how pretty.

How big was the earthquake? I was in a 7.2 in northern California in 1989, it was scary as heck. We had aftershocks for days too, the first night was the worst, a lot of people slept outside and so did I, in a baseball field, too afraid to go in a building, there were a lot of people sleeping there and also in their cars. No power, it was all very scary. But the building codes in California are so stringent that only 62 people died, when tens of thousands died from similar quakes elsewhere in the world due to the way buildings are built.

p.s. cruz I am glad you are okay too!

  • Jolene

True, but then again, if she did well on AC, that would be a fine career too.

Well, that depends on your definition of “a fine career”. AC airplay alone gets you the kind of career Kim Locke has nowadays. AC is notorious for moving very few singles/albums. Maybe there are exceptions to that rule (there probably are) but overall I think most current artists seldom release songs with AC as the target format. Michael Johns did, though. Maybe it’s an Idol thing.

  • Suzanne

I don’t understand what Jive Records is doing with David Archuleta at all. Anybody? His song Zero Gravity has been getting amazing response at live shows. The audience just goes insane and everyone is jumping up and down by the end. People generally like A Thousand Miles, mostly for his impressive piano playing, but it’s not his strongest song. And the Touch My Hand video is completely for tweeny kids (and a few adult die-hard fans, but really, it’s aimed at love-interest-aged girls).

This “bundle” they are planning seems illogical. It’s crazy (and ironic) to weigh down Zero Gravity with the Touch My Hand video or other songs. It should be put out as a single, pushed with decent advertising, and offered for Top 40 adds. Jive has also made available via itunes bonus tracks, like Works for Me, that are better songs than are on his CD, with no fanfare at all. And when he did Touch My Hand on AI–I couldn’t believe it. Just painted him as a kidz pop/21st century David Cassidy wannabe.

Sorry to go on, but he’s a great singer and it’s so frustrating. He’s got a two album deal and that’s it. The way things are going, I’m wondering if his second album will be full of traditional Christmas songs, issued this November, and then the parties will mutually decide not to renew?

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=587900002&ref=name cruzceleste

@oceana, the earthquake was a 7.1, wich is weird because we are only supose to get up to 5, it was 2am so everybody was slep. There were less than 10 deaths, sadly most of then kids, some buidling were damage most of them were more than 200 years old, one bridge went down… in north of the country there are some people that are sleping outside their houses becuase they are scared….

    and thank you :)

  • OregonMJFan

I, too, am looking forward to Michael Johns’ cd coming out next week. As a fan, yes, I would have liked more new songs, but am not upset. As someone mentioned earlier, I’ve been listening to the old ones for free and outside of Michael’s fan groups, people have not heard this music. They will be remastered and I’m excited to hear them. I’ve heard one of his songs remastered (Fire) and like it better than the original. We also got a Christmas song that MJ did for charity “Another Christmas” and the “Don’t Look Down” soundtrack he co-scored and it included the beautiful duet “Life Is Okay” with Brooke White, so I am happy.

I understand, too that this is not Michael’s fansite and not everyone likes him. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I don’t like all the Idol contestants either. It’s all a matter of taste and I think the diversity is great. However, there have been some times where things have gone too far and has made me and other Michael fans uncomfortable on this site and somewhat sensitive. Good luck to all the Idols. Even those who weren’t favorites on AI, if they come out with a song I like post-idol, I’ll buy it.

  • SpenserJ

Well, that depends on your definition of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a fine careerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . AC airplay alone gets you the kind of career Kim Locke has nowadays.

Sadly, I don’t think there’s any way to rationalize Kim Locke’s career as successful (unless the definition of success is getting a paycheck in the entertainment business and not having to wait tables). I’d like more for Brooke, because I really do enjoy her voice. Listening to her always puts me in a good mood.

I’d love to be pleasantly surprised by this next single, but usually, with the AI peeps, I’m sadly disappointed. An AC only career may be what Brooke’s heading for (heck, maybe not even that – maybe she won’t get any play at all) and I wouldn’t find that to be “fine” at all. It just reduces the chances of hearing original music from her on a regular basis to next to nothing. I’d miss her.

It’s true that a lot of these kids carve out careers with appearances and other paying gigs in the entertainment industry. But, when you really like someone’s voice and you really want to hear them bring you fresh original music, getting one new song a year downloaded from their web site that no one visits is pretty disappointing.

Brooke is one of the few AI contestants that I’ll actually be a little sad if she fades into that oblivion where the only gig they can get is one of those mini Christmas concerts with 4 other obscure AI finalists.

  • Kris

I am okay with ZG just being sold on iTunes. I like the song but I’m not so sure that it would do as well on the radio as others do. I think David is going to have better songs on his second album.

  • Tatiana

I am a big fan of David, but I actually agree with some of what you are saying – more than most fans. Touring with people like Demi is good for him at this point. I would prefer is if Jive let him include in his album more songs with real heart to them (Save the Day, Somebody Out There, etc), in addition to the pure pop.

Sorry to go on, but heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a great singer and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s so frustrating. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s got a two album deal and thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s it. It’s possible this could happen. But this might not be the worst thing. To me, Jive isn’t anywhere near the best label for David. Half their “artists” can’t even sing (Britney, Chris Brown, Weird Al??!). If David and Jive part ways he’ll be picked up by another label in a heartbeat. I think Hollywood Records could be a great home for him. Yeah, it’s Disney, but they have a pretty diverse roster, including Plain White Tee’s…and he’d have the Disney machine fully behind him. I think they would respect the music he really wants to do more than Jive has. Plus, Disney knows how to sell records and market their artists without relying so heavily on radio airplay.

That wouldn’t be bad, but dropped AI contestants don’t have a great track record of getting picked up by another major. (None, right?) Both Ruben and Taylor Hicks said in the Newsweek interview that they mutually parted with their label because they wanted to produce their own line of music–Taylor also wants to produce other artists on his own label. Maybe that will work out for both of them, which would be great, but the CDs they both just issued under their independent labels are pouring off the shelves.

An artist on a major label has a better chance of succeeding because there’s more money behind him for promotion.

Anyway, I like him, and I’d like to see Jive push Zero Gravity.

Ha, I’ve been reading backwards up! Is that weird? Anyhoo, yes, I was very disappointed that Brandon showed so much promise and then tanked on the show. Yet, I do love some of his original stuff, especially the song “Out of Style.’

I think Kat is the only one who actually got re-signed to another very respected label after being dropped. It was a jazz label (Vantage?) but more in her wheelhouse artistically. I don’t really think Jive is looking to drop David, but if they do part ways I don’t think he’ll be out of luck. He’s still so young and has enormous talent.

Also, I don’t think David’s own drive and focus should be underestimated. I’ve seen candid videos of him and his personality while working/behind the scenes seemed quite different than how he appears through the media. I think he’s alot savvier about his career than people give him credit for. It’s interesting. Anyway, glad you like him- I hope he does well too :-)

I agree she deserves better. Then again, many deserve better and few get it. It’s a tough industry to break into. I don’t know if I should be happy or terrified she has Randy Jackson in her corner.

  • brie200

With Archie, I’m not buying his music, but I’m in the camp that it’s good for him careerwise to be touring with Demi and the like. Or at the very least I don’t think it’s a bad thing for him careerwise. Then again while I like the guy, maybe I would feel differently if I were an adult who was a fan and wanted to attend shows and not just Disney type concerts.

As for Brooke, I hope the single is good (and the cd). I just haven’t figured out if that 1974 comment was supposed to be a compliment or a diss. My immediate reaction was that it was a diss, as much as I personally like the 1970′s singer/songwriter vibe. It still scares me that Randy is involved in her career.

Then there’s MJ. I can’t say I’m disappointed since I wasn’t particularly looking forward to his release anyway and I fully understand that the older tracks were never really released, but it just seems like a bit of a cop out considering how much he’s been talking up this album for the last several months.

  • awilliams

    I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if that gives you the 1974 vibe, and I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know why the writer chose 74 when 70-72 are probably the quintessential years for the soft rock singer/songwriter stylings of Carly Simon (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the Way Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve Always Heard It Should Beà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was out in 71, for example), Carole King (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Too Lateà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and everything else on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tapestryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), Cat Stevens (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Wild World,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Moonshadowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), James Taylor (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Fire and Rainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), Jackson Browne (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Doctor My Eyesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), Don McLean (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ American Pieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ), CSN&Y (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Woodstock,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Teach Your Childrenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ) and Elton John in his early, more contemplative years (à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Your Song,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Tiny Dancerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ). Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m guessing thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the mood the writer thinks Brookeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s single captures.

I as just thinking the same thing! I graduated high school in 1973 and followed Carly Simon, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, et al ( CSN&Y), 1970-72 were the years best representing them. And FM radio was really taking off – alot of us were switching over to FM, tiring of the teenybopper music on AM.

We’re yet to find out whether Brooke’s new music will connect with the public (I hope it does), but whatever happens, I don’t see a Kim Locke kind of AC and Christmas shows career for her. Radio play is crucial for the Top 2 idol finishers whose labels want them to hit big and fast, but is not necessary for a sustainable singer songwriter career that I envision for Brooke. I pay attention to radio, but I honestly discover music a lot of different ways. I can see her type of music being great for a TV show, a commercial, or a movie soundtrack. I recently got really into Landon Pigg’s music because Falling In Love in a Coffee Shop is in that phone commercial, and a lot of musicians that I follow now, I first discovered through the Garden State soundtrack or Greys Anatomy (The Shins, Joshua Radin, Ingrid Michaelson, etc.). If Brooke’s label could get her some licensing deals, she could do great…

I don’t know whether to be thrilled or terrified that there are so many of us who have actual memories of the 70s hanging around here (or hanging around AI). Is it good not to be the only oldster? Or really bad for AI’s demographics?

As for the AM/FM thing, in Chicagoland, you’d get your top 40 on WLS and WCFL (AM giants) but WXRT was just starting to take off and be a cool progressive/alt rock voice on FM in the early 70s. By 78, Steely Dan had a single about FM (no static at all) to go with the Martin Mull movie, and that movie had a great soundtrack that would totally have been at home on AM radio a few years earlier. I think the AM reference to Brooke means poppy Top 40 as opposed to cool or prog. But I’m probably way overthinking some guy’s off-the-cuff slam. Maybe he was trying to say Brooke’s single sounded more Captain and Tenille than Joni Mitchell.

And, Kim Locke is one of those chicks that I just want to punch in the face (but that’s a little off topic).

I seriously doubt this, because David has already started writing for the new album. When he was in London he was supposedly working with a couple established song writers…and I believe David himself has said that the next album is going to be pop, but with a more mature feel than the first album.

I don’t really understand Jive’s strategies either…I definitely feel like they’re wasting Zero Gravity, an awesome song that absolutely should have been on the album to begin with.

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand what Jive Records is doing with David Archuleta at all. Anybody?

That makes two of us, though I know for a fact that there are lot of fans who feel this way, even a lot of the teen fans. I have been told by Program Directors when I have called to request that the label was not pushing his second single very much at all. And ALTNOY is a GREAT song! Much better than Crush. I understand that the first single comes out before the album and has a better chance to do well. But for a second single to be so blatantly dismissed by the artist’s label is just crazy to me! Zero Gravity is awesome as well. Why it was left off the album makes no sense to me. They should’ve had it on there in place of Touch My Hand EASILY! Touch My Hand is so lame. I hate that he has anything to do with Disney AT ALL. Just because he’s young does not mean he should be promoted that way. I’m still a fan, but I anxiously await the day when he can do the music he is really passionate about. Bonus tracks like Works For Me and Somebody Out There, both of which he co-wrote, are outstanding. And it’s a shame that everyone who didn’t buy more than one version of the album with bonus tracks will likely never hear those. The organic pop sound really fits him perfectly. Why should he wait until he’s 30 to get there? Makes no sense whatsoever. I only hope his next album is much better and better promoted. He’s got some catching up to do.

Album info from david on xm20 interview, recap from snarky archies
(audio rip will be up tonight or tomorrow on fans of david)

Album? We’re just starting the process, I guess. Had a few sessions already trying to write and stuff. Having the meetings and stuff. It’s just the beginning. I have started earlier than last year. So a slightly earlier head-start. Talking about the direction of the album w/ label and management. Just trying go get on the same page. Just hearing their ideas. And me giving my opinions and what I’d like to do. It’s very important and just the base of making the album. Building up from there. There’s a lot of work that goes into it. Trying to figure out what goes into it. there’s a lot of meetings. Half the time I don’t know what’s going on. half the time I’m spacing out, but I’m trying to pay attention. it’s my life we are planngin out here, so I’m excited. I can’t wait to start recording working with new people. Working with some new people and some people I’ve worked with before. I still would love to work with Natasha because she ‘s kind of in that same category with me. Still trying to get my sound, a more definite sound. Still growing and learning. When you think you’ve got it figured out, you got something else thrown at you.

  • hardkandy

I can’t wait for Brooke’s new single and her album. I don’t care if it belongs in 1974 or whatever the eff, hahah… I can listen to her sing anything even if it’s from the 1400′s or the age of the dinosaurs.

Oh and it’s her birthday so – Happy birthday Brooke!!!!

The XM20 interview was excellent. They talked about the swine flu check up in Manila and his tour with McFly in the UK. He was happy to be to able to be just a regular tourist in the UK since not as many people recognized him there. He talked about his work with the Muscular Sclerosis Society (two friends of his suffer from MS) and Stand Up 2 Cancer. Apparently, he indirectly saved someone’s life from colon cancer. He took his mom and little sister to Paramore’s and No Doubt’s concert and were able to meet with them backstage. He gave us his impressions of Miley Cyrus during his stint on Hannah Montana, and he spoke about his upcoming summer tour with Demi Lovato. He said that Demi has written over 300 songs. “I wish I could write 3 songs,” he said. Lol. And finally he spoke about his upcoming album. They had a lot to talk about. As always, David was charming as ever.

You can download the entire interview as an MP3 file HERE. Or you can listen to it directly from the Fans of David site.

  • Kris

I’m thinking that ZG didn’t make the album for a few reasons. I believe that David wrote many of his songs late in the album making process. I also think that probably the label didn’t like the demo of the song that they heard. I believe even David didn’t like it. They also probably didn’t think the song fit David. Which is not a surprise. They had to get this album out quickly and all they knew of David is from what he did on American Idol. I am fine with them putting it up on iTtunes and not releasing it as a single. At least fans can purchase it.

He talked about his work with the Muscular Sclerosis Society (two friends of his suffer from MS) and Stand Up 2 Cancer.

MS is Multiple Sclerosis, not Muscular. It’s an auto-immune disease of the nervous system. It can affect muscles but it can wreck havoc on just about any part of the body…my sister has MS though she’s been in remission for about 20 years.

it just seems like a bit of a cop out considering how much heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been talking up this album for the last several months

Eh it’s PR–I think it’s any artist’s job to talk up his product just as it’s a fan/critic’s prerogative to give an opinion on it. Hey, most AI alum talk up their excitement about writing with Kara “Open Toes/No Boundaries” D. right?;P Can’t really fault any of them for doing that.

However, as an MJ fan, I wasn’t so much disappointed by hearing old tracks on his new CD (I happen to like most of MJ’s old songs and I’m thrilled more people will get to hear them); selfishly, it was more about hoping for new stuff I haven’t heard before and not just his pre-Idol collaborations. I love his voice and think his talent deserves a lot more. Oh well, fingers crossed, there’s a second album for that. And as some mentioned, Michael’s given his fans more than a treat with Don’t Look Down and an upcoming solo CD. I don’t think including these older tracks that he mostly wrote himself, anyway, makes him a slacker or less of an artist, especially since he’s even writing with Brooke. So I’m over it. But I also get why other MJ fans might feel let down (as for non-fans, er, why would they still care or how are they even able tell the diff?:P). Just as I hear a few Cook fans would’ve preferred some of his older, ‘edgier’ songs instead of the mainstream pop-rock on his current CD (I listened to both and liked neither), we’re all hard to please. Anyway, early reviews by critics of Michael’s CD seem positive. At the end of the day, what matters is that he has good songs, regardless if they’re ‘old’ or new. And since he owns the rights to these songs, if the album does well enough, I’d say Michael might be a bit more than fine.

I was very disappointed that Brandon showed so much promise and then tanked on the show.

Me too. And I crushed on him then, even more than MJ, actually, heh. I hardly recognized him when I watched a clip of MJ on one of those Idol shows Brandon co-hosts, though.

Well, that depends on your definition of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a fine careerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . AC airplay alone gets you the kind of career Kim Locke has nowadays. AC is notorious for moving very few singles/albums. Maybe there are exceptions to that rule (there probably are) but overall I think most current artists seldom release songs with AC as the target format. Michael Johns did, though. Maybe ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an Idol thing.

Sorry, I should have thought more before I wrote. I meant that any charting and radio play is better than none, and lots of musicians would die for just that much. And I think that any artist who can make a living doing what they love, even if they aren’t a superstar, considers that as being successful. Because so many artists can’t make a living at it, and have to keep a day job.

I was a fan of Brooke’s on the show and I’d love to see her do well. She has a unique quality if it can be channelled well. I wish her only the best.

What is the news about MJ’s cd? “Old” songs, what does that mean? Sorry but I don’t know where that info is to be found.

I’m hoping for a fantastic remix of Zero Gravity from DA. The previously released verison was blah compared to his concert version of this song. It has great potential if they mix it up right. Here’s hoping they don’t mess it up – it has hit potential for sure!

Just for the record, David IS currently working on putting together a 2nd album, he will probably also be putting out a Christmas album but it is undecided as to whether it will be this year or next. I know those 2 things as facts.

Jive also doesnt drop artists like RCA/Arista do and Davids success is far higher than any of the other Idol artists that have been dropped within a year or 2 so I think its a load of nonsense talking about him being dropped. However I do agree with some of you that Hollywood Records would probably do a good job with him.

I’ll be happy to have any full version on my ipod lol

oceana, Michael apparently re-recorded several of his older songs from his indie pre-Idol record that was never released. These will be included in his new CD. MJ fans (mostly) recognize the songs because we, er, ‘found’ ‘em way back. (Now if only he’d find a way to release those lost tracks when he was with The Rising, too. He sure has written a lot of good songs!)

Oh and I like your definition of success. :thumbup_tb:

I also think it’s way premature to be talking about DA being dropped. He has too much going for him to even be thinking that way.

they aren’t going to drop Achuleta…he’s sold over 700K domestically and is popular overseas AND on the Disney circuit. If you can get a gold album these days, you are lucky. Doesn’t he get spins on Disney radio? That’s an island unto itself.

Thank you for the correction, gingerly. I’m always confusing MS with MD, muscular dystrophy. LOL.

ZERO GRAVITY full song dang bout time. I gotta have this on my ipod. The perfect tune for my summer. lol

Archie is doing great and I don’t think Jive will be letting Archie go.

It’s almost time for Archie’s tour with Demi . lol I’m going to Gwinnett. :)

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand what Jive Records is doing with David Archuleta at all. Anybody? His song Zero Gravity has been getting amazing response at live shows. The audience just goes insane and everyone is jumping up and down by the end. People generally like A Thousand Miles, mostly for his impressive piano playing, but ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not his strongest song. And the Touch My Hand video is completely for tweeny kids (and a few adult die-hard fans, but really, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s aimed at love-interest-aged girls).

This à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“bundleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ they are planning seems illogical. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s crazy (and ironic) to weigh down Zero Gravity with the Touch My Hand video or other songs

What they are trying to do with regards to the fan-pack is make more money by selling to his dedicated fanbase. It’s not about expanding the base. That, ideally for him, will happen through his second album and summer tour.

The one decision that Jive made vis-a-vis David that makes absolutely no sense to me was pulling the adds-date for ALTNOY from HAC. I doubt the song would have been a big HAC hit, but it’s not hard to at least make top twenty in that format.

And that would have given David some more exposure and sold some more downloads and albums. The decision also meant that the video– which was slick, clever, and proabably not cheap to produce– went largely unseen. And that, in turn, denied him yet one more source of exposure.
