Did I miss something? Did Tatiana release material? What is going on with that? Thanks Itsalleternal.

  • itsalleternal

Seriously, Tatiana did release an album of her own, and apparently the Academy accepted it for submission.

  • houstonrufus

Huh, well, there you go. She is nothing if not ambitious.

  • windmills

itsalleternal: Thanks for compiling. You missed Just A Dream (Hillary Lindsay, Steve McEwan, Gordie Sampson) in the Song Of The Year category.

Edit: Oh sorry. I thought you were including songs the AIers hadn’t written since Had It All was in there. I forgot about the Kara connection. Duh to me.

  • oceana

I didn’t realize that Neil Young had a new song out (fork in the road) or that Morrissey’s “I’m Throwing my Arms Around Paris” was a new song, I thought it was much older (great song). Didn’t know that Van Morrison had a new one out either (Madame George). This is a cool way to learn about some songs I didn’t know were available. Bruce Springsteen’s “Working on a Dream” is a good song, I dig it.

Though there are only a few interesting new artists this year, I think the Idols are still facing tough competition from Owl City, Ladyhawke, Ingrid Michaelson, Passion Pit, Grizzly Bear and Lisa Hannigan. The Ting Tings and The Script have the “buzz” working for them, so they might be able to sneak in the “winner’s circle.”

  • itsalleternal

It seems that indeed David Cook was submitted in the Rock field. 56 entries is a pretty small field so he might have a shot at a nomination there.

  • 123abc456

Thank you so much itsalleternal for the submissions and MJ for the thread.

RCA submitted David in the Rock category which is good because that is where he belongs, he is not a pop artist. We will have to see how things shake out. Thanks again.

It think David Cook has a good shot at Best New Artist, IMO he is on the short list there.

He also looks good for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.

I am making no predictions here but these are the categories he is strong in I believe.

WTF? They submitted CBTM but not Permanent? UGH!

  • http://www.twitter.com/sarahruth3 Sarah

Hmmm. Interesting that RCA submitted “Already Gone” instead of MLWSWY for Kelly in the song categories. I wonder if they think AG stands a better chance of getting nominated because of the Ryan Tedder cowrite? I don’t think it will against “Halo” though.

David Cook’s Light On and Come Back to Me were both also submitted to Song of the Year and Rock Song of the Year categories. I didn’t see them listed above.

I’ll admit I’m surprised (but pleasantly so) that Cook went Rock rather than Pop. I didn’t expect that.

  • DavidD11

I guess they really submit everything even if it doesn’t really have a shot to win. I think Kelly has the best chance with Already Gone if it continues to catch on.

  • Kirsten

David Cook’s Light On and Come Back to Me were both also submitted to Song of the Year and Rock Song of the Year categories. I didn’t see them listed above.

Yes, I might go back and add them.

Right now, I’m just listing the songs written by Idols, but if the song wins, there is some credit to the singer as well. First pass was just the Idol nominations.

  • wordnerdarchie

David Cook’s Short Form Videos for LO and CBTM are not on your list, MJ.

  • itsalleternal

Definitely, Tatiana and her little-known album is the big surprise on the list. I have been looking for anyone with solid connections to Idol – winners, finalists, semi-finalists, other notable contestants (none this year, although Brooke Barrettsmith had some last year) and judges.

Songwriting categories have to be watched the most, as sometimes an Idol may have credits for a song he/she wrote but didn’t perform – he/she would be the one credited for the Grammy in that case. (We have already seen that with Chris Sligh.) Ace Young was nominated for a Grammy that way in 2008 by co-writing on a nominated Daughtry song.

  • alxsavage

    Tatiana Nicole (Del Toro)

Kara was right. There truly are no boundaries O_O

  • fearbear

LOL I didn’t know Tatiana had an album out!!! Where can we check that out?

  • sma11ie

Just scrolled thru BNA list. WOW, that’s a much more crowded field than I expected–lots of great acts on that list that were critically well received– more so than David Cook… Feeling uncertain about DC’s chances for a nod now. We have Bon Iver, Manchester Orchestra, MGMT, Cage the Elephant, Asher Roth, Glasvegas, Bat for Lashes, Zac Brown Band, Grizzly Bear, The Veronicas, Ting Tings, 3OH!3, and of course all those solo girls the Grammy’s favors for BNA, like Ingrid Michaelson, Laura Izibor, Erin McCarley, Kate Voegele, omg I could go on and on!

I’m bummed. DC has an outside chance at LO for rock vocal but that’s about it, especially since they decided not to submit Permanent (sobs). Does it hurt LO’s chances that the song is in the rock category and never got rock radio play? Hope not. Anyway, gonna start deflating my expectations for any nomination for DC now… I’d just rather not be crushed if he doesn’t get a nod.

  • Sassycatz

I’ll admit I’m surprised (but pleasantly so) that Cook went Rock rather than Pop. I didn’t expect that.

It’s too bad that the label didn’t do likewise with the actual album (which worries me regarding how these submissions will fare). If you don’t know what I’m talking about, compare Cook and the Band’s tour performances vs. the album tracks. It’s like they just discovered over the past year that they have a rock artist on their hands and not … whatever they thought he should be.

WTF? They submitted CBTM but not Permanent? UGH!

What she said. Epic fail. *sticks tongue out at RCA* Super happy about the rock category decision, on principle, even if he doesn’t nab any noms, but bummed (also on principle) that Cook cowrote the best song on his album and recorded it beautifully in two takes in the eleventh hour and RCA didn’t even submit it in a vocal category, much less Song Of The Year. Maybe they are concentrating their efforts on BNA for Cook and figured the HAC radio success of LO and CBTM made more of a statement to the voters? But if radio success was a big deal, then what are they thinking re: Kelly, when Sucks was the monster hit for her? Tedder ass kissing? I dunno… *scratches head*

I think Carrie, Daughtry, Kelly, and David Cook….and maybe Melinda Doolittle, Phil Stacey, and Mandisa.

Mathematically, the Constantine and Frenchie/Ruben-led soundtracks have a good chance too (since 5 get nominated and there are only 21 entries in their category)

DAVID ARCHULETA deserves the nomination for The Best New Artist and Best Male Pop Vocal…i hope the judges will see the light, lol!

    Go david archuleta!shine on!

  • Matt

I’ll admit I’m surprised (but pleasantly so) that Cook went Rock rather than Pop. I didn’t expect that.

    I agree.

I’ll be happy for even one nomination for Cook, though I think two is possible. I still like his chances for BNA.

Carrie and Kelly will likely get noms, along with Daughtry.

If Melinda gets a nom, it’ll make my year. Talent like that should never be overlooked.

  • SBC

    ^^^
Not only does David A deserves the nomination, he actually has a chance of winning it.

    Go David!!!

  • itsalleternal

There were a few I thought might have been submitted but weren’t: Amanda Overmyer, LaKisha Jones, Kristy Lee Cook (for her later stuff) and Jennifer Hudson (for some later stuff). Are EPs eligible for album categories? If so, then Josiah Leming, Sanjaya Malakar and several others could have been submitted as well.

Jason Castro I think put his single out too late for consideration, the deadline was August 31. He should be submitted for Best New Artist and others for the 53rd Grammy Awards, as should Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta and perhaps others.

  • SBC

Well, all nominated has a chance of course!

  • ggdoorsfan

i agree mhel – david a has a legit chance to be nominated here for bna as well as anyone else… talent like his shouldn’t be overlooked either, but it’s not our call… i’ll leave it up to the grammy committee to decide..

    go david a!

  • canada

david a is my fav but it be a miracle if he is nominated in anything,i hope for a miracle.

  • canada

how is cooks musci considered pop? its rock.

  • sma11ie

how is cooks musci considered pop? its rock.

Well, canada, the lines are sometimes blurred here. I mean, Rob Thomas’ Her Diamonds is on the pop list. I could see folks argue that as both more or less pop than CBTM.

  • Sherena

Carrie might win something. I don’t think anyone else will.

  • Kirsten

David Cook’s Short Form Videos for LO and CBTM are not on your list,

Oops! Thanks for catching that. I’ve added them.

  • tierbee

Aw, I’d be so excited for a nomination of any sort for David Cook. Fingers crossed.

  • sma11ie

I wonder why Already Gone was the only Kelly song submitted when MLWSWY was the huge hit. I wonder if RCA was afraid submitting two songs in one category would split votes and eat into her chances of getting nominated at all? In that case, why did RCA use the throw it against the wall and see what sticks strategy with LO and CBTM? I’d rather they have concentrated on LO for the rock vocal category. Don’t love either song, but LO is more vocally impressive, and did better on the charts than CBTM.

  • rockvixen

Carrie and Randy will win because the Grammys eat up shit like that and I mean good shit haha

  • FolkFan

If I had to guess, RCA, with DC, was reminding the voters that he had two songs that charted well this year. So, nominating both songs may be part of a strategy for getting a BNA nomination.

This may also explain not nominating Permanent. I don’t really think that LO and CBTM would split votes. LO is more of a rock song (and so more appropriate for the categories), has a stronger rock vocal, and was more successful. In a head-to-head battle for votes, my guess is that LO gets the majority of any votes that would be thrown DC’s way in the rock categories. But Permanent? Great rock vocal, but it was not a radio single, which cuts both ways (did not have the success of LO but had the excuse of being a charity single, rather than a radio single). So, I could definitely see LO and Permanent splitting votes—LO getting the “this is a rock song” and “this was successful” votes and Permanent getting “but this was a ridiculous vocal” votes.

So, nominate both of the radio singles, realizing that it doesn’t really reduce DC’s chances of getting a nomination for one of the songs, while possibly strengthening his argument for a BNA nomination, but don’t nominate Permanent, which could have taken some votes from LO, preventing either song from having a shot at a Grammy nomination.

Just my theory. I’d hoped for a submission and nomination for Permanent, but I at least understand this reasoning, if that’s what RCA was doing.

  • cookbunny

Voters and industry tend to want to keep you in a box once you’re put in it. David has made it pretty durn clear he wants to be a “rock” artist. If he’s nominated in the “pop” category his first time out, he may get pegged as pop for the rest of his career. He may not even get a nomination this year (I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t consider either song “rock”), but it’s good to put the “rock” label out there for the future…to establish himself in that category.

  • CFIdolsfan

Carrie might win something. I don’t think anyone else will.

I prefer to be more optimistic. Mandisa and Chris D. have been nominated before. It will be cool to see some win as songwriters, like Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey. Chris S. has actually tweeted Danny Gokey about a song he and Phil have cowritten for Danny.

  • sma11ie

If I had to guess, RCA, with DC, was reminding the voters that he had two songs that charted well this year. So, nominating both songs may be part of a strategy for getting a BNA nomination.

I guess I’ll buy that. But re: Permanent, I had all along kind of been hoping RCA would submit that as the one DC song in Pop. The album version, with the piano and full orchestra, is decidedly not very rock. DC’s vocals are the only things that make it somewhat rock, but if Chris Cornell and his voice is listed on the Pop list (yeah, for Scream, go figure, right?), then Permanent could fit in Pop. No vote splitting there.

I kept thinking how John Mayer won both the Best Male Rock Vocal (for Gravity) and Best Male Pop Vocal (for Say) last year… in fact, I had myself wondering if the charity version of Permanent could’ve been a contender, cuz even though Gravity was on JM’s studio album, the win was for the track from his live album. But I dunno if an iTunes release counts. Besides which, JM is way more established, and a Grammy darling, so no point comparing what happens with him to DC just yet haha. Like DC says in his tweet about the Springsteen show, he’s got his work cut out. I’m gonna try not to sweat this too much if he doesn’t get a nod this year. Like I said in my post up top, the BNA slot is actually pretty crowded, IMO. If I had to choose between a Grammy this year and longevity, I’m hoping for longevity for the dude. I’m just excited he’s already writing for his “sophomore slump” haha.

  • fearbear

but if Chris Cornell and his voice is listed on the Pop list

that’s coz Scream is actually an electronic pop album, and Chris meant it to be that way. It was produced by Timbaland.

Hmm I think definitely Carrie and maybe Kelly and Daughtry can get nominations, then no one else. Carrie is most likely to win one too, she’s practically a shoo in for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.

  • ozarka

It’s not too late to turn in more submissions, is it? Couldn’t they still submit “Permanent” into the Pop fields?

  • ozarka

I copied this timeline from the other thread. I guess it is too late for further submissions…

If you put this in American Idol terms, here is the Grammy process:

Initial submission ‘“ Done in August by labels, basically submitting an application. Think of that as the first audition cattle call.

Initial screening ‘“ Done in late August and early September by the Recording Academy. Not judged by merit, but screens out those ineligible (i.e. not released on time) and those in the wrong genres are moved to set the official entry lists. Think of those are the producers’ rounds.

First ballot ‘“ This is the stage we are at now. All the official entry lists are sent out to everyone eligible to vote (I wish we were!). The votes are due on October 9. Think of that as the judges’ round.

Second screening ‘“ This takes place after all the first balloting is in and lasts into November, and is done by the Academy and music professionals. I believe the top 25 in the first ballot in each category continue to this round, which sets the nominations. Think of that as Hollywood week.

Nominations and final ballot ‘“ On December 2, the Academy announces the nominations in each category (usually 5 in each). The voting members get another ballot here, only with the top 5 and they choose the winners. Think of this as the voting rounds of Idol.

Awards show ‘“ The winners are announced on January 31 as the top vote-getter in each category. Think of this as the finals.

David Archuleta for Best New Artist – go
    David A

  • Dr. Tracey

Good to see Elliott’s name in there.

Yeah, I figured that much, but the vote splitting possibility didn’t occur to me. Sigh. The best way to avoid vote splitting would be to submit Permanent in the pop category, as sma11ie suggested. Probably a bit much for a new artist, I suppose. I’ll obvs be thrilled for Cook if he snags a nod in any category, but still….sigh.

  • Tamarynd

Nice to see so many Idols on the submission lists.

Fingers crossed that Melinda Doolittle, David C., David A. and Elliot Yamin might get nods.

Would be cool to see Brooke White and Michael Johns nominated, too, although I think they don’t have a chance.

  • cheesehead

crossing my fingers AND toes for DC! like Dave would say ”hope for the best but expect the worst”)

  • wordnerdarchie

I see that David Cook’s lead guitarist, Neal Tiemann, has song writing credits for Burn Halo’s “Dirty Little Girl” that has been submitted for nominations in Best Rock Song category.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if Neal’s song was nominated for a Grammy?

  • TwigLA

Tanique, I’m glad that I’m not the only one who looked at this list and did a huge eyeroll on …. Tatiana Nicole (DelToro). Did someone at VFTW submit her or did she submit herself?

These various awards have always been very bogus for me – with mild exception to The Golden Globes and The Tonys.

  • Kipper

In my dreams, David Archuleta walks off with a Grammy ~ but in reality, I’d be very happy with a Grammy “Nomination” this year! Next year, with his Christmas album and his sophomore album, he’ll stand a much better chance. Would love to see him in the New Male Artist category this year though. (And of course, he’ll always be #1 in my heart!) :)

  • http://realitymusings.blogspot.com BuckeyeGal007

All the Tatiana Del Toro submissions made me LOLz. That chick is crazy.

Fingers crossed David Cook gets some nominations.

  • Kipper

Buckeye, I’ve never heard anything about Tatiana since Idol ~ but apparently, she’s been busy! The girl never gives up ~ if you can win a Grammy in THAT category, she wins hands down!

  • itsalleternal

Unless someone at VFTW is her record executive, either she or someone close to her did the submissions – which is perfectly legal as long as they are sold in mainstream outlets like iTunes or Amazon.com, since it was released in the period allowed (October 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009), whether 19E likes it or not. I had to keep my eyes peeled in case others like LaKisha Jones or Amanda Overmyer made submissions too (I never found them).

I highly doubt she will even make it past the first screening, let alone to the nominations, though…

  • itsalleternal

If we knew them beforehand, I’d be curious to see how many pre-Idol recordings were submitted as well. Of course we couldn’t keep track because we didn’t know they would become Idols…

The voting deadline is October 9 if anyone here has voting rights (doubtful, but you never know).

Field 13, Category 64: Best Americana album

Brothers of the Southland / Brothers of the Southland

Bo Bice has 3 tracks on this album.

Umm, why is Tatiana even being CONSIDERED? lol.

  • itsalleternal

Madison – good catch! I forgot all about them.

  • CFIdolsfan

Thanks, itsalleternal, for posting the Grammy timeline and the total amount of submissions.:-) I trust that it is okay to copy the info and post it elsewhere. I will credit you, of course, with putting it together. I wanted to post it at other fan sites where there different threads kept for other Idols, like specifically at Phil Stacey’s phan site, Ace Young’s, and Danny Gokey’s, where I do post. Thanks to everyone else, too, who has supplied info.

  • wipedaway

Who the hell submitted Tatiana? LOL…

I think Kelly could get a nomination both in the female vocal and the pop vocal album category. Those are the two she won in 06.

  • Kirsten

Bo Bice has 3 tracks on this album.

Thanks for catching that, Madison. I’ve updated the main post.

If I were you, I would credit this site as a whole, as MJ was the one that posted everything that I found. However, feel free to credit me for identifying the information and the Idols involved.

I had been looking for several days and only last night did I actually find the links (with the help of several other sites, such as Pulse Music and the Gold Derby boards, which were also following the lists).

However, NARAS (the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences) deserves the ultimate credit, as they leaked it – once again.

  • reinharv

Reading some of the people (songs or whatever) on this list made me laugh out loud which really emphasizes that you can submit all you want & apparently these labels have a great sense of humor or they are throwing spaghetti against the wall to see if it sticks.

So if there are nominations that come out of this, that is impressive. Winning is better, but being nominated isn’t bad at all. Of course, I wouldn’t even bother to list what I think is ridiculous & I am not even counting Tatiana in this list.

crossing my fingers AND toes for DC! like Dave would say ‘ hope for the best but expect the worst’

I’m hoping for Best New Male Artist nomination for Cook. Heck his album went platinum in less than 4 months & he has two platinum singles off that album so that has to count for something & nobody in that list of idols under that category can say that.

  • Danielle

I was shocked to see Tatiana on that list, then just very annoyed. Can’t she just go away?
Also mj, there’s just one t in Archuleta.

  • ozarka

I found another Idol that’s been submitted but isn’t in the lists above:

Category 108 – Best Short Form Music Video:
Jennifer Hudson – “If This Isn’t Love”

  • karenc

I thought if the Idols made it to the top 36, it was in their contract that they could not release a CD until after the winner released theirs? I wonder how Tatiana was able release a CD. Not to mention why……

Apparently, Tatiana thought it was legal because she released it on her own without label backing…

  • FolkFan

BTW, there is no “Best New Male Artist” category. Just “Best New Artist,” regardless of whether the artist is a solo male or female, a duo, a band, or whatever.

  • May

What she said. Epic fail. *sticks tongue out at RCA* Super happy about the rock category decision, on principle, even if he doesn’t nab any noms, but bummed (also on principle) that Cook cowrote the best song on his album and recorded it beautifully in two takes in the eleventh hour and RCA didn’t even submit it in a vocal category, much less Song Of The Year.

Yes..epic fail again. Permanent really should have been submitted. It’s the kind of song that would probably get widespread critical acclaim. Light On stands a small chance because the vocals are really gorgeous (although the only live performance I like is the acoustic one). CBTM doesn’t stand a chance in hell. His best chance is with the best new artist nomination, which I think he really does deserve. As popular as Cook was during idol, I do think that a lot of people don’t realize how talented he is until they see him in concert or see him perform a song more suited to his style (like Permanent). I blame RCA for that. Tired of trying to rationalize what they do.

  • CFIdolsfan

Category 108 ‘“ Best Short Form Music Video:
Jennifer Hudson ‘“ ‘If This Isn’t Love’

    Added. Thanks!

there’s just one t in Archuleta.

    Oops! Fixed.

  • oceana

The links to submissions don’t work anymore. Wonder why. Now I wish I had copied and saved the rock submissions and some others. Oh well. Maybe they will come back, but maybe we weren’t meant to see them.

I’m hoping for Best New Male Artist nomination for Cook.

It’s not separated by gender, there’s just one BNA award for both men and women. He’s nominated for Best New Artist.

  • oceana

I see that Daughtry is submitted for Record of the Year for “Life After You.” What song is that? Is it his next single off the cd? I expected “No surprise” and it was a “surprise” that it was a different song, lol.

  • itsalleternal

The links to submissions don’t work anymore. Wonder why. Now I wish I had copied and saved the rock submissions and some others. Oh well. Maybe they will come back, but maybe we weren’t meant to see them.

Last year they were only posted for a short time as well. They always get deleted pretty quickly. Since so many were watching it, I am sure that someone will post it on their own files…

As for liabilities, it WAS the Recording Academy who set it up for a leak so only they can be blamed…

  • sma11ie

First ballot ‘“ This is the stage we are at now. All the official entry lists are sent out to everyone eligible to vote (I wish we were!). The votes are due on October 9. Think of that as the judges’ round.

I heard that Life After You is Daughtry’s next single, but why would they submit it if first ballot is due Oct 9, when No Surprise is still spinning strong, and Life After You hasn’t even gained any traction? Weird.

I’m thinking about the whole first balloting to 25… I wonder if DC would make the first cut down to 25 for BNA. There are definitely 25 worthy artists in that list of 300-plus, IMO. Or is the first balloting process not for the general fields? Feel like I heard that somewhere.

  • itsalleternal

All of them go through first ballot. It is just very tough to just pick 5 nominations out of the up to 750 valid submissions, and that creates the risk for fluke entries. Imagine, for instance, if the VFTW members were quick enough to reach voters and put Tatiana up there? She wouldn’t have to go through a second phase, she’d be immediately up for nomination…
