Here’s another performance from Danny Gokey of “What Hurts the Most” at the FOX 5 studios in New York last week.

Plus, another interview segment. Danny talks about his late wife Sophia, coming in 3rd place and Dancing with the Stars.

Video after the JUMP…

Interview

What Hurts the Most

  • JB1

Once again, kudo’s MJ. I know you personally aren’t a big fan of Danny, but you do a great job of non-discriminating in your posting of all the idols who get on TV. Much appreciated.

  • CSM

Well…I didn’t like it! He didn’t sound so good this time…

  • adamandeva

Wow Danny, what a hot mess you are. Starting to feel bad for the guy:

  • steve

It takes work and things like missing interviews make me think he doesnt have it in him.I could get into the whole wife thing but just not worth my time.

    http://twitter.com/dannygokey/status/1992416113

  • wellhesback

Ok, I know I never liked the guy, but I accept that he can sing & that he has fans & everyone likes different things. However, I’m more sure than even (if that Twitter is true) that America sure dodged a bullet by not having him as an Idol.
I learned early in my work career that you don’t get many second chances in the real world. So you just don’t oversleep. Perhaps he would be more motivated if he had won, but as third place finisher, well, exposure is even more important to your career.

and not to be snarky, but Cookie could get up and run a charity race, in between two concert dates, the day after his brother died. Just sayin.

  • naomit

wow…now I really feel sorry for danny. I felt so stupid if overslept for one class, image how it feels to miss 3 interviews which are so important for a early career…sign…

  • Marjorie

I agree with BJ1 “great job of non-discriminating in your posting”.

Makes what you say, more credible to me, so yes, thanks.

  • SpenserJ

Aw, if that’s true I almost feel bad for Danny. DJ’s no likey when you miss the scheduled radio call.

  • Dr. Tracey

Poor Danny, maybe they should be comparing him to Susan Boyle instead of Adam.

I know you personally aren’t a big fan of Danny, but you do a great job of non-discriminating in your posting of all the idols who get on TV. Much appreciated.

I don’t hold back my opinions of the Idols, but I’m not here to promote one over the other either. As a news blog, I try to report what’s out there, regardless.

There exceptions. When I do avoid reporting on an Idol–it’s fan behavior that’ll cause me to hold back, not the Idol themselves.

  • aek

Yeah, he should have gotten his tail out of bed. He really can’t afford lapses like that. It’s tough out there.

That being said, I guess everyone makes mistakes. If I were him though, I wouldn’t have tweeted about it. He’s too open. He should know people will give him crap.

Anyway, I remember Elliott doing some foolish junk like this back in the day. Seems he either missed or was late for an interview and I know he was late to the White House to meet the president when all of the idols went that year. It was kinda funny, but I do remember fans jumping on Elliott and saying he didn’t have what it took.

I hope for Danny this was a fluke and is not typical of him.

I didn’t think he sounded bad in the video above, but then I listened at work and the speakers aren’t so good here. I reallly like Danny’s voice, so most of the time I enjoy his performances.

  • CSM

Does anybody know if that was really his twitter account!?! Doesn’t he have a manager or something to help him out? I mean…miss one interview okay. But then someone has to have noticed it!!!

  • aek

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m more sure than even (if that Twitter is true) that America sure dodged a bullet by not having him as an Idol.

Eh, I don’t know. It seemed the year that Taylor won, he had a minder of some type that helped him keep on schedule with these interviews. I remember one interview, where the djs were asking weird questions or something and she was forcing Taylor to get off the phone.

I do think they are more “taken care of” when they are the winner, and just have to rely on themselves if they are part of the rest of the pack. Still, he should have gotten out of bed…..get a few alarm clocks, Danny, and set them all.

  • aek

That is his account. His brother and cousin are both linked to it, along with Chris Sligh, Matt, and Anoop.

I think they all have publicists with 19 through the end of the tour. Maybe that person couldn’t get through to Danny either. Sounds like he’s back home in Milwaukee. I imagine they were phone interviews.

Yes it is his ryan seacrest twitted danny, anoop, alexis, scott and matts twitters right before the finale.

i wonder if allison, adam and kris not having twitters yet mean anything.I do live on the grassy knoll

  • jpfan

Okay, it’s official the similarities between Danny and Elliott are getting too numerous to mention. Oversleeping and missing interviews is nothing compared to oversleeping and being late for a visit to the White House. (Although I’m pretty sure Elliott didn’t want to meet Bush and the “handlers” forced him to go.)

Danny and Elliott are almost “too real” for Idol, if you know what I mean. Unless, Danny makes a habit of effing up, a few missed interviews shouldn’t be a big thing.

  • Jx223

I wouldn’t have tweeted about it either and I also think that people are going to give him a hard time about it. He is very open, and honest and shares a lot of stuff with his fans.

I hope that this isn’t a habit and things will work out for him.

  • jl

Such a cute interview. SHe’s a Goquette! Never heard that before, but I guess that’s what I am. Loved Danny’s impersonation of Simon – very cute.

And I’m always happy to hear Danny sing – what a voice!, so thanks for the posting.

About the missed phone interviews, who knows – maybe they just reschedule, but I don’t think it’s the end of the world. I agree that it would be good for him to stop being so transparent about everything – especially mistakes!

  • kimberann

I feel so bad for him. What a class act.

  • JustWatching

Unless, Danny makes a habit of effing up, a few missed interviews shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be a big thing.

I would imagine it would be a pretty big deal to whoever was doing the interviews, especially if it had been advertised that he would be on at that particular time.

  • armada2000

Yeah, thanks for posting all this stuff, MJ. Not to say it was a good thing for Danny to oversleep, but we’ve all done it. I doubt he has any kind of assistant because those people have to be paid. It’s not like Taylor Hicks. He won the show and 19 and his label probably paid for all of that. I would assume only the top 2 get those kind of perks. Danny comes across as almost having to do all this stuff on his own. He might have some friends or family helping him, but that’s not the same as having professionals taking care of you.

  • jpfan

He needs to call the radio stations back tomorrow and kiss some serious butt.
    I doubt they’ll stay mad.

  • ptslittlecomment

He needs to call the radio stations back tomorrow and kiss some serious butt.
    I doubt theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll stay mad.

It depends of if they need him more than he needs them. If they are big market stations it is likely they are already booked and he probably missed his chance. I doubt if anyone is truly mad but the programmers will remember this.

  • aek

I like Anoop’s response to Danny’s twitter about oversleeping and feeling stupid. :)

I think it kind of depends on the kind of stations he had booked. If he was booked on one of those sunshine and rainbows morning shows, they probably just covered it and moved on. If he was booked on one of those morning shows where the DJ’s live to make fun of people, they’ll still be calling him douchebag tomorrow. Either way – the story would only stay local to that stations listeners, so it’s really not a huge deal. It’s just kind of rude. So, he does need to apologize.

  • NatX

Hell, he looks like he’s about to fall asleep in the photo up top. Either that or he’s fresh off a three-day bender. What a winner. Maybe he’ll meditate on it and study some other people’s sleep patterns and get his shit together.

  • jpfan

Morning shows have hours to kill. They should have him on to rag on him.
Letting everyone know just confirms that Danny is clueless. He’s starting to become one of my favorite Idol contestants ever.

Letting everyone know just confirms that Danny is clueless. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s starting to become one of my favorite Idol contestants ever.

Not the one I worked for. We had meetings about what we were going to do at the start of the week and the start of the day. We had so much time alloted to our news, sketches and the like and the rest was advertising and music, especially now with computerization such a part of the show. If something was programmed to happen at 10 past the hour (ex.) It happened or there was paperwork and computer logs to explain why.

Now when I was a midday host and an overnight DJ, I had more flexibility – but that was generally in the pre-computer age.

  • canuck

Wonder if the third place finisher has any support provided by Idol for things like dealing with the press and so forth.

Just helps to take care of the day-to-day stuff when things arise like lost luggage and with what press to speak with and not.

    Just hang in there Danny.

  • SpenserJ

Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s starting to become one of my favorite Idol contestants ever.

He’s like the gift that keeps on giving.

  • butte009

Haa!!! Shows what a “winner” he is – can’t even get his butt out of bed to promote himself.

Dancing with the Stars? Sorry he’s not qualified. He’s not a Star, except in his own mind. The only reason why Melissa got cast this season was that they needed someone to fill in with only 2 days notice. She had just been jilted on air on a show that was also on ABC (I guess that’s what happened – I don’t watch the Bachelor). If he does ever manage to get on then that will be the second show he’s ruined for me.

As for “What Hurts the Most”…. Excellent pianist… that’s about it.

  • terfra

Danny sang that song so good, even better than the other times he sang it.
So much expression and feeling and he is really nailing it and making it his own!
Except the speakers sounded muffled and the sound system was really messed up with the reverb.

  • aek

I don’t think that Danny should do Dancing With the Stars anytime soon, although I think it would be fun. I think he needs to concentrate on his music and getting out of bed in the morning ;). I think he knows he doesn’t need to do this now, based on what he says anyway.

As far as being a star, well no, he’s not really a star, but neither are alot of the contestants as far as I’m concerned. Danny probably has more name recognition right now than many of the people on the show. It remains to be seen whether he will have name recognition a year from now, of course.

I enjoyed the videos. Thanks, mj.

  • endorphine

Danny sang that song so good, even better than the other times he sang it.
So much expression and feeling and he is really nailing it and making it his own!

Yeah, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Connecting with the listeners. I read an article that said Adam was a great performer, but Danny sang from the heart. My sentiments exactly.

about the tweet, it’s too bad that Danny overslept, but even worse that he let the public know cuz it’s just more ammo in the anti-Danny war! I love Danny, but I wish I could just sit him down and give him a little chat about reining himself in a bit (even tho that’s one of the things I love aout him – he reminds me of my happy-go-lucky hubby who constantly talks before thinking and I have to pull his fooot out of his mouth!) Even so, I doubt that this is a career breaker. I mean, the guy is a human being and things happen sometimes that we wish hadn’t. Doing something that is unprofessional accidentally certainly isn’t the same as just blowing people off, at least I don’t think so and I hope the radio stations will give him the benefit of the doubt at least this once.

  • oceana

We’ve all overslept? Not a big deal? No way, it is a huge deal. Have we overslept for the biggest opportunities of our lives? Not if we hope to make it in a competitive business like the music industry.

Really there’s no excuse for oversleeping and missing interviews. It’s unprofessional. It reflects very badly on him. Ruben also missed interviews and even concert dates and it badly impacted his career in my opinion.

If he thought he might oversleep he should have had 5 people call him to make sure he got up. You do whatever it takes. You only get an opportunity like this once in a lifetime, and thousands would be glad to take his place if he can’t handle the stress.

    Wake up Gokey …

  • lizzy12345

    edit: no fingerwagging

Thanks MJ for posting the video. I am a big fan of Danny’s voice and I think he did great on the song. What Hurts the Most is one of my favorite Danny performances.

  • Tess

I’m not judge or jury over Danny Gokey. It’s his life, his future. Yuh, posting about missing the interviews…not a good idea…but that is part and parcel of the non-filter that is part of Danny. I just want so much more from someone who has been given this great opportunity that Danny has. And I feel so bad when he treats it and by extension his fans with so little respect. People voted for him and he should respect that by being the best American Idol he can be. He needs to make all his appointments, be peppy and cheery, and not “laugh” when he does something wrong. It isn’t funny. 100,000 peeps would be surrounding themselves with hundreds of alarm clocks if they were presented with the opportunity of having an interview after placing 3rd. Danny, if you can’t pull yourself out of bed out of respect for yourself at least do it for the hundreds who would have given anything to be in your shoes.

  • JB1

edit: don’t question the motives of your fellow posters!

Mind you, i don’t disagree with any points you made, and I love the Goke. He should have made the interviews. Not the end of the world though.

  • Jx223

I love that he is informative to his fans, but some things would be better kept to himself, since he does have a lot of haters on line and some of them are actually following him on Twitter. There are a lot of people that pick apart everything that he does, and he needs to be careful not to give them more ammo, to criticize him with.

He needs to make all his appointments, be peppy and cheery, and not à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“laughà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ when he does something wrong. It isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t funny

I know that sometimes a person’s tone in their writing isn’t that clear and could be interpreted in more than one way. But I honestly don’t think that Danny was “laughing” at this with that “I feel so stupid” line. I think that he was actually upset and disappointed with himself.

I get the feeling that he might be hard on himself when he messes up. I don’t think that he was “laughing” about missing three interviews. I think that he was genuinely upset with himself about missing the interviews.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

Never mind. I thought it was funny and meant it as light-hearted, but don’t want to start anything. :-)

  • rockpaperscissors

edit: don’t question the motives of your fellow posters. please remain respectful

He wants to make “good music” yet he continues to put forth no effort what so ever.
I hope to dog he is making a good buck with his “charity” because his music “career” isn’t getting off on the right foot.

ETA – what is the big deal about him missing three “local” radio interviews….these interviews were with stations that probably helped promote and rallied for Gokey during AI- local hometown support – that’s the big deal

  • http://myspace.com/girlgeek mj

Never mind. I thought it was funny and meant it as light-hearted, but donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to start anything. :-)

PJ, I was ROTFL, so thanks for that.

  • aek

I don’t think most people are making excuses for him. From what I can tell most fans on here think he should have set the alarm clock and got up on time and made the interviews.

Still, most fans are not ready to ditch him because he made a mistake. Sure, he needs to make sure he doesn’t make a habit of this kind of thing. Hopefully it was a fluke.

It’s happened to me before that I just did not hear the alarm at all, usually because of sleep deprivation. Normally though, I arrive about 10-15 minutes early.

  • maggiemay

Poor Danny, maybe they should be comparing him to Susan Boyle instead of Adam.

    lol

missing three radio interviews at a time like this is really unacceptable…isn’t there anyone to remind him? :unsure_tb:

  • TwigLA

That was disturbing to watch. Danny’s voice is shot and the hand gestures and body movements – I just don’t know how to describe them. Someone seeing him for the first time would be hard pressed to figure out what the hype is.

I’m also starting to feel sorry for this guy. He’s in way over his head and I get the feeling he’s been praised all his life for the most mundane of reasons.

He’s also biting off more than he’ll ever be able to chew and keeps adding to the plate. Does he really think he can run his ‘foundation’, ‘write’ music (when he’s not a writer or a musician), have a Signature Designer line of glasses (when he’s not a designer), get out his first album, get on Dancing With the Stars (though that could happen) all while going on a 50 city/ 3-4 month nationwide tour?

I sense a meltdown coming and I don’t think it will be in any way pleasurable to watch.

On the Twitter thing, I say no big deal that he spoke of oversleeping. I’m sure in his mind, only his family, friends, and fans are reading those. Maybe some of his close people can get through to what I see as a thick skull and convince him to dial it back.

    Baby steps.

  • Tess

Maybe some of his close people can get through to what I see as a thick skull and convince him to dial it back.

Oh, but where would the fun be in that?

  • canuck

Danny’s projects (glasses and foundation), those are the kinds of projects where the work is done by someone else, and then endorsed and overseen by Danny. It’s really not that big of the deal. As for Dancing With The Stars,
Danny even said on his interviews that he wants to focus on his music right now and his foundation.

Having said that, Danny would be best to just talk about making music at this point in his career and focus on that in the public eye.

Danny does look tired in the picture presented by Fox – they really couldn’t post a better picture could they? LOL I think he is a good looking man – why post the worst possible picture? I really don’t see that happening with Adam and Kris. It seems like the media is hyping up the best about Adam and Kris and looking for the worst in Danny.

Danny would really benefit from having a good publicist. I’d love to know if the third place winner has help here or is the third place finisher just thrown to the wolves?

  • Dr. G

I think Danny did a good job in this interview and his song. Adam and Kris certainly haven’t sounded as good in their stripped down versions as on the show or studio versions. I think Danny did a better job singing in his three interviews.
His tweet about missing the interviews just proves what an honest, humble guy he is-I don’t get all the people who say he lies and is arrogant-putting a mistake out there for everyone to honestly see isn’t the action of someone like that.
I think he is an open book and people just aren’t used to that, especially in the entertainment business where everyone has an “image”.
I’m sure other idols have made mistakes like this (gasp)-you just didn’t hear about them because they didn’t fess up!
I am disappointed Danny doesn’t have someone in his family/friends who is helping him a little more with the PR stuff. Adam and Kris have professionals, as well as Kris has his wife. Danny’s probably really missing his wife about now.

  • terfra

NOPE! His voice is absolutely awesome!
Saying his voice is shot is no way so, in any stretch of the imagination.
And someone that is able to recognize real talent would NOT be hard pressed to see it at all. It has been seen!

Most people see it and is why Danny made it to 3rd place. Everyone else can’t be wrong!
The minority that don’t like Danny can say he can’t sing if they like. That will never make it so.
Its most likely that Danny turns them off for their own reasons.
There’s no reason to feel sorry for Danny, he’s not in over his head anymore than the top 2. LOL
They ALL have a challenge to make the most of their opportunity. Its not guaranteed.
I personally think Danny has great potential, and he will exceed!

Also, I highly doubt Danny was overpraised in his life.
He is too humble and down to earth, just an honest, real, regular guy.
He needs to not be so truthful and keep some things to himself. Cause people will pick him apart for saying things, just shooting off the hip.
And no more sleeping in, gotta take the ball and run with it. Though I’m sure he realizes that and will not make an error like that again. This is a whole new life to adapt to.

He has had hardships it is plain to see.
I don’t think he has had anything handed to him, but has had to work hard I would bet, more than most of the other idols.
As for hype, Adam was just as much hyped and more so than Danny.
Adam CAN sing, I won’t lie about it.
But his voice is not greater than Danny.
Technically yes. He has had much more training and experience.
But voice tone, most definitely not.
And if you want truth, Adam started to sound the very same on every song. Same high tone with the screech thrown in for good measure.
Everyone started saying that, they started out liking Adam, but it just got to be the same ol’ thing.

The hype Adam did not live up to, because he peaked and there was nothing more there.
Unless Adam starts using his voice the right way and more pleasing to the ears, I don’t see him being as successful as is being hyped. JMHO
I really hope for the best for Adam though. I just can’t imagine the record he will make.
I’m just pointing out that Adam is not there yet either.
He is not the perfect singer anymore than Danny, no matter what anyone says.

  • Dr. G

Completely agree with everything this poster said. Adam was my second favorite, but for the above reasons went with Kris at the end, as most did.
Many love Danny’s voice-there’s a reason the judges loved him and America does too. And the guy is just a plain hard worker and has had to persevere through a wife’s death and the most hate on the internet aimed at anyone (through no fault of his own; he can’t help the AI machine wanting to boost ratings at anyone’s expense). He basically worked 3 jobs before idol (day job and volunteering at 2 churches as music director) so he definitely has the drive to succeed in the music business. He was pretty exhausted by the end of idol due to the schedule, losing luggage, dealing with criticism more than others (obviously still ongoing by the looks of these posts :-) ), and finally being able to grieve fully and its a shame he’s too independent to ask for help, but I would bet he’s busy making amends to the radio stations now, and won’t sleep through again!

  • endorphine

I love Danny Gokey, plain and simple, through and through. I still get goosebumps when I listen to him sing.

  • kokko

“Someone seeing him for the first time would be hard pressed to figure out what the hype is”

That is exactly my sentiment towards Kris – THE American idol of Season 8. I don’t really think his post idol performances have been living up to the “hype” of being the winner and the coronation song is not doing him any favor either.

I love Danny’s voice, rich tone, very masculine, yet there is a certain degree of vulnerability there. His falsetto is exquisite. I would love to see him singing Queen’s ‘Love of my Life’ it would be absolutely fantastic.

  • aek

That is exactly my sentiment towards Kris -

Yeah, I feel the same way. For me, and probably most other nonbiased people, Kris’s voice simply pales in comparison to Danny’s. I think Kris even admitted that he was not one of the best singers. I really hate to say anything negative about Kris because he does seem like such a nice guy, but geesh, I get tired of holding back any negative feelings on the others when it seems that Danny gets picked apart for everything, real and imagined.

I think Kris picked better/cooler songs than Danny and he’s cuter (although he looks like a little boy to me, but still, cute as a button). That said, I don’t see any reason why Kris can’t be successful. It’s not like his voice sucks or anything…and I can see him being mainstream.

    His falsetto is exquisite.

It really is, isn’t it? It seems so dang effortless for Danny. I think of this year’s crop only Adam can be called a better singer than Danny. Adam has so much range and he is so technically proficient. Adam had voice lessons from 10 years old on…Danny would not have had that kind of opportunity, as he did not come from the background as Adam.

Although, I thought that Adam should win based on the above mentioned things and his bolder performances, I still prefer the quality of Danny’s voice to Adam’s. It’s a signature voice, very distinctive…love it!
