Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov-5-11

Is it cold where you live? Well, it’s starting to get cold on radio as the Christmas freeze creeps closer. Already, we start to see our first invaders from Mr. Cold Miser’s domain with Holiday songs from Rod Stewart, Train and Colbie Caillat charting on AC. The slow down at this time of the year creates a drag on milestones, so we only have one this week…and boy is it a doozy.

Phil Phillip has done what was previously thought impossible and topped the AAA chart with a coronation song. Idols have struggled for years to have any kind of significant impact on that chart. This most granola of charts seemed largely immune to the cheese that is Idol…it almost seemed to feel that Idols were too commercial. So, for the traditionally most cheesiest aspect of Idoldom, the coronation song, to have made it to the top of the Triple A chart…as Vizzini would say “INCONCEIVABLE”. I think only the most ardent P^2 fans who had never been a member of the chart watching crew could have predicted this last May. If there is one thing that Jimmy Iovine as brought to Idol, it is relevant coranation songs. Well played, sir. And well done Phil.

The only other chart note this week is that Casey James returns to the top 20 on Country with “Crying on a Suitcase”.

Carly Rae Jepsen (CI):
“Call Me Maybe”: 7 AC (7)
“Good Time” with Owl City: 14 Pop (11); 8 HAC (8); ^14 AC (15)
“This Kiss” ^41 Pop (39)

Carrie Underwood:
“Blown Away”: ^34 HAC (37)

Casey James:
“Crying on a Suitcase: 20 Country (22)

Cher Lloyd (UK XF):
“Oath” featuring Becky G: ^32 Pop (34)

Chris Mann:
“Roads”: ^31 AC (32)

Daughtry:
“Start of Something Good”: 30 HAC (30)

Hedley (CI):
“Kiss You Inside and Out”: 24 HAC (25)

Jason Castro:
“Only a Mountain”: ^19 CAC (19)

Kelly Clarkson:
“Catch My Breath”: ^17 HAC (20), ^25 AC (27); ^35 Pop (40)
“Stronger”: 5 AC (5)

Lauren Alaina:
“Eighteen Inches”: ^33 Country (36)

Melanie Amaro:
“Love Me Now”: 26 UAC (29)

One Direction (UK XF):
“Live Like We’re Young”: 17 Pop (15), ^45 AC (46)
“What Makes You Beautiful”: 8 AC (9)

Phillip Phillips:
“Home”: ^2 HAC (3); ^13 AC (12); ^16 Pop (18); ^1 AAA (2), ALT ^46 (50)

Vicci Martinez:
“Come Along” f. Cee Lo Green”: ^44 HAC (49)

Note: Numbers indicate position on the chart while numbers in brackets indicate the position on the chart the previous week. The “^” (aka “a bullet”) indicates that a song gained spins since last week

Adds listed on AllAccess:
Nov 12: Country: Kelly Clarkson “Don’t Rush” f. Vince Gill
Nov 13: Rhythmic: Jermaine Paul “I Believe (In This Life)”
Nov 26: Country: Carrie Underwood “Two Black Cadillacs”

This is the daily numbers thread for Monday. Stats collected on Monday morning.

It’s rare to see an idol first in year 11, well done P²

  • jpfan2

Congrats P2. It is kind of a miracle that a coronation song could top that chart.

  • http://twitter.com/Girltalkbf AlesheaDominique

Well, look at my snowflake fighting back and inching to the top. About 4 country songs go recurrent this weekend. Lauren has a chance to be in the high 20′s on next weeks chart. That would be a top 30 hit and more countdown spins. Here’s hoping some adds come in and help make this happen.

  • windmills

Congrats P2! Definitely wasn’t a fan during the Idol season but it sure is fun to see him succeed in such an unpredictable way.

  • sporkle

Good for Casey James – crying on a suitcase is a great song :)

  • Indigobunting

Good luck Lauren, it would be nice to see another female inch a little higher on country radio :)

Bummer-is CJ song almost done, stuck at 20 briefly again after Carrie went recurrent? It has really slowed in momentum the past few weeks and the newbie below him is gaining on him, although sometimes songs are down on Mondays. This week will be crucial.

Wow, P2!  Congrats-I’m not a fan either, but I do really like that song and it is impressive that he topped that chart.  I was at a High School Banquet and they had a slide show made by the teens-they used that song.  It is a very good sign when teens like an Idol’s song, I think.  Still have to listen to his album clips.

  • girlygirltoo

Congrats to Phillip. I have to admit I never thought I’d see an Idol top the AAA chart with any song, let alone a coronation song, so this is fantastic. Hopefully this will open the door to that format not only for PP’s future singles, but for other Idols who fit that format as well.

I really don’t know what to make of COAS. It is getting very high ratings in the country radio surveys – I take two of them regularly and COAS is always top 10 – once #1 and the last one I took he was in the top 5 with Eli Young Band, Luke Bryan and some other pretty big stars.

And yet, it appears to be struggling. I’m hoping for a top 15 before Xmas freeze. I still hold out hope.

If not, bring on Drive. ;-)

  • Caro3278sweet

    3 – Lauren Alaina – Eighteen Inches
She’s hanging in there. Go Lauren! This is just such a pretty song.

  • ptebwwong

At least recently, I’m not sure having high ratings on country radio surveys mean much. For example, Alan Jackson’s “So You Don’t Have To Love Me Anymore” was in the top 5 in country radio surveys almost every week, but that song only peaked at #25. I have also seen mediocre or low rated songs on those surveys become hits recently.

IMO radio plays who they are told to play by their management. I don’t think radio PD’s care if a song is high or low rated by the country radio surveys.

  • http://twitter.com/Girltalkbf AlesheaDominique

Do we know which station. My stations still haven’t added her. They don’t count much though since they were both taken off as monitored station for not playing enough varity.

  • DB987

San Antonio (KCYY),Colordo Springs (KCCY) and Madison (WMMD) were the adds.
Unfortunately there are four songs that will likely pass  Lauren this week or next on mediabase, Thompson Square and TIm Mcgraw this week and Chris young and George Strait this week or next. She will most likely stay ahead of Gloriana. that should leave her at 35 next  Sunday so I would guess it is going to take another month to crack top 30 if she keeps moving forward, hopefully right around the ACA show.

This chart is just so hard to get any movement in when you are new.  You have the stars like Luke,Jason,Carrie,Miranda etc then you have the Lee Brices, Hunter Hayes, Easton Corbin etc.  The wave that has passed Lauren is catching up to CJ and then the next wave that is about to pass Lauren will gain on him. I think eventually the stations give up on the song.  Hope he can keep going I like Crying on a Suitcase alot.
