We have eleven milestones this week to report – eight of those are from Christmas songs including a new number 1.

Kelly Clarkson may not be able to beat those wretched Ducks on album sales, but she is clearly the Queen of Christmas song radio airplay. For the fourth consecutive week, she has three milestones. As predicted, she has accelerated to the top of the AC chart with her original Christmas song “Underneath the Tree”. It moved from 16th last week to 1st this week. Also making a large jump is her “Please Come Home for Christmas” which is now in the top 15. “Blue Christmas” moves into the top 20. Susan Boyle representing BGT has her “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” climb into the top 40. Leona Lewis from X-Factor UK also introduces a Christmas song to the AC chart. “One More Sleep” debuts in the top 50.

Another chart dramatically effected by Christmas songs is the CAC chart. There was a big disruption in the force and older songs are tumbling like rocks. That meant that Mandisa lost her iron grip on the top of the CAC chart (sliding to second), but she did debut a Christmas song rather impressivingly. Her “It’s Christmas” moved from 78th to the top 30. Jason Castro, from Season 7, also landed a Christmas song on the CAC. “Gloria (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing)” moved into the top 50.

A final entry in the Christmas song milestones this week is Fantasia over on UAC. “What Christmas Meanst to Me” of the “Best Man Holiday” soundtrack debuted in the top 40. Also moving up the chart is the title track from her own album, “Side Effects of You”, now in the top 30. Fantasia has four songs on the UAC (top 5, top 20, top 30 and top 40). Candice also has a milestone on the UAC chart with her single “Cried” achieving top 40.

Finally, the story of the week. One Direction’s “The Story of My Life” notches a milestone on HAC by going top 40. While that may not seem all that impressive, the numbers for the album likely will be. They are riding a wave of popularity and Black Friday sales to some very big numbers. Last year, they had two number one albums. This album is unquestionably going to be the number one album in many countries. It all remains to count the numbers. HDD will start releasing estimate numbers today.

Parachute still hanging in there without any radio yet :))

I’m curious though, Candice’s new song that started playing on Urban AC, wasn’t that ever released to itunes? I don’t see it listed here?

  • CanadianLady

I bought Candice’s song on iTunes Canada. Still haven’t seen James’s there though. Sigh.

  • justmefornow

Well that’s good that Candice song was released to itunes and for Canada too at the same time.
Do you think it was just missed in reporting here? I’m curious because I’d like to see what changes maybe in charting to look for once James song starts at radio in January.
I know James’ song isn’t available there yet. He said it would be soon. I’ve seen lots of complaints from his Canadian fans on his Facebook.
    Maybe soon :)

  • elliegrll

There are not a lot of Urban AC songs on Itunes. Fans of that format tend to buy physical albums, but not digital downloads.

  • justmefornow

Well that’s also true of Rock fans. James sold very few singles last era, mostly all albums.

I was just curious because both of the songs were released around the same time I think, and her’s is already being played on radio so I wanted to see what impact that could possibly have in charting.

Also, Candice being a winner of a poorly watched season, and James a 4th place finisher from a popular season I would think would have a similar sized fan base.

  • Stooch

Yeah Wind-up is so bush league, I can’t think of a time that I couldn’t buy music here in Canada when it was released in the US. I even bought music last week from an artist that is self releasing and doesn’t have a label and it was available in Canada on it’s release date………I’m not impressed, I’ll wait and see if they do the same for the album

  • justmefornow

Just curious. With his 1st album and singles, did you have the same problem?
I wonder if the changes recently at the label could be to blame for the delay?

  • elliegrll

Also, Candice being a winner of a poorly watched season, and James a 4th place finisher from a popular season I would think would have a similar sized fan base.

I don’t think that this line of thought has ever proven to be true.
I’d also say that as much as I liked James’ first album, his ITunes placement, which is not exactly overly impressive, or bad, has more to do with his leftover AI fans than any rock fans that he’s made.
Either way, rock/soft rock hot ac leaning songs have more spots on ITunes than songs that only get played on Urban AC stations.

  • Kaylo17

Yeah it was released to Itunes. I think it peaked somewhere in the 500s

  • justmefornow

My guess is all his leftover 2+ year AI fans bought the song in the first day or so. Whose’s still buying it now, I have no idea.
Plus he’s now in the dreaded “sophomore curse” phase, whereas Candice is still in the 1st era phase, so she should be selling more, so apples to oranges I guess.

  • Stooch

I did have to contact the Canadian distributor for Wind Up (BMI) for something, but for the life of me I can’t remember what it was for. I know I had his singles and bought his album at midnight on the day of it’s release. There was a slight difference with the song we got for bonus tracks here in Canada, we didn’t get Crawling Home, but someone sent it to me right away so I had all the music. I think I contacted BMI cause James album wasn’t listed for sale before it came out on itunes and I wanted to make sure I could get it. That was at a time when I was much more engaged as a fan, now I’m kinda “well you can make your music available to me or not”………whatev’s lol

  • justmefornow

Glad you got Crawling Home. That was strictly a pre-order only itunes bonus track here in the U.S. and disappeared off of itunes after the album came out.
James recently said there would be 2 bonus tracks for Celebrate as well.
I’m really surprised by the Canadian delay this time, I mean how hard can that be to make it available digitally? lol.

  • Stooch

my bet is it’s on the BMI (Canadian distributor) end, can’t pretend to know how the relationship works or even if they are still the Canadian distributor for Wind Up. I do know it’s not rocket science to put up a song on Itunes

  • CanadianLady

I think she’s just not getting much promotion so unless you follow her on Twitter or read this blog, you might not even know it’s out. Unfortunately.

  • CanadianLady

I had someone in the US get me the Target special CD with 16 tracks so I never looked on iTunes. :)

  • CanadianLady

From someone who knows distribution all too well from the books standpoint, very weird things happen between the US and Canada. Some of which I can’t really object to since I kind of want to be a separate country, but is also sometimes baffling.

  • CanadianLady

James has done some touring and had other PR over the last two years (Stand Up playing, etc.), and his fellow 2010 alums have also tweeted re his CD, whereas what has Candice had, really?

  • ptebwwong

    Country monitored adds (54.4% in):

Kellie (Little Bit Gypsy) – 11
Scotty (See You Tonight) – 9 (2 activators)
Danielle (The Heart of Dixie) – 2
Scotty (Christmas Comin’ Round Again) – 1

Kellie & Scotty received the Cumulus block.

  • CanadianLady

Yeah Scotty! Has Cumulus come on board yet?

I was wondering if any of his Christmas songs would get added.

  • justmefornow

Well that’s too bad and Interscope should be ashamed of themselves. I hope when her album comes out they step up their game.
I’m surprised then it’s even been released to radio at all.

  • DragonFly

Been mentioned his songs get played on Internet radio—would assume Parachute can’t be played there until it is released to radio?–thought maybe that could be fueling sales from that I’m curious also how he’s staying on Itunes chart—”more pleased” than curious. Kind of thing you don’t question “where sales are coming from” lol. He’s been making himself more available at some events over the past yr. & on Tw/Fb than before. He does get enuf “love” about album 1 so I think he has fans that are waiting for #2. Song list is showing itself—April is so far away but I understand there’s a plan. And yeah, fans from other than Canada are complaining also.

  • windmills

Kellie got most of the Cumulus block (including the #1 and #9 markets, New York and Atlanta). Scotty got most of the medium markets in the Cumulus block, but none of the biggest Cumulus markets. It also appears to me the adds are based on spins from syndicated programming. That’s still a step in the right direction though and I do expect the full Cumulus block to get on board with SYT eventually. Just to give you an example of how Cumulus works sometimes: Frankie Ballard made t20 Billboard last week and t20 MB this week, and didn’t get the Cumulus block add until last week.

It must be said though Cumulus has been making more “out of the box” adds of songs before they make t30 lately. New Columbia Nashville act Leah Turner picked up the Cumulus block (though likely because of syndicated programming) a couple weeks ago, before her single made t40, and Sara Evans picked up the block add (again, probably because of syndicated programming) last week with her single approaching t35. Same thing with American Young’s Love Is War (which is just outside the t50). So it seems like their old policy of waiting until everything makes t30 before block-adding has relaxed somewhat.

  • springboard2

I have added it to my list and updated today chart :)

  • CanadianLady

I’m not sure it has been released to radio yet.

It’s been released to radio. Here’s what’s showing on Mediabase:

I think this is Walmart reporting. Garth Brooks’ release was Walmart exclusive.

  • thirdtime

I’ve been wondering myself who is buying it without any promo or radio play, and I would love to see sales figures so far to compare to his other singles. Do we still get sales figures for singles? I thought maybe just because he’s listed under new releases on iTunes people are seeing it there and checking it out and liking what they hear compared to the past 2 singles. It’s baffling…but I’m really happy for him!

Yeah, it’s definitely more than the AI fan base now. They bought it over the 1st weekend and it fell off of itunes by that Sunday night.

But the day after the AMAs it starting charting again. That appearance, being featured in the singles section on the main page, and word of mouth I think is selling it.

He wrote the song with Scott Stevens and Andy Stochansky and they both have tweeted about it along with this guy I just noticed, I think from The Voice, not sure because I don’t watch it.

He’s at #21 on HDD’s site with 17,764 with 51% in. Being a Black Friday week, he won’t fall like it would have had it been released in a normal week.

  • escape

It’s not true that there has been no promotion for the song. Every appearance Durbin’s made, every interview he’s given is promotion for the song. Being #438 on ITunes is a long, long ways from being Gold.

Got to give it up Candice – she is staying true to herself with her music genre.

  • justmefornow

Well a few different Internet radio stations have tweeted about playing Parachute already before the official January release and now I just noticed the GWU campus radio station in D.C. has played it as well.

    WRGW RadioActivity ?@WRGWnow
Just played: Parachute – James Durbin – Celebrate(Windup)

Could be impacting sales some, who knows?

  • heartly

This update included itunes because that Songs For the Philippines album was itunes only.

Pretty neat this week to be able to see exactly when two of the major retailers were reported.

  • justmefornow

The reason the fans see it as odd is when comparing it to coming off Idol with the most buzz arguably he was ever going to have, he never charted any singles from MOABD or even Stand-up from the NFL album the way Parachute has charted.
It’s the difference between then and now we are baffled about.

And no one said anything about Gold, lol.

  • escape

Got to give it up Candice – she is staying true to herself with her music genre. Personally, I’d much rather go down for something that I believed in – vs go down for something that I was forced into. Candice will re emerge – just like Lee Dewyze, who also stuck to his music roots.

  • justmefornow

LOL. That’s funny. Like Candice had control over her album delay as well. Candice recorded the album and songs her label Interscope told her to.

Lee on the other hand probably did have more control this time.

  • Lexie O’Neill

Okay, that was weird…Scotty didn’t add one sale from that update. I understand he’s not extremely high at itunes, but not one?

  • Porfivor Nixon

I didn’t know Kelly’s song was original, it’s a good song. How exciting.

  • escape

But she was able to stay within her music genre. She wasn’t forced to do a Country album or an alt rock album because her last two predecessors from Idol had success in those areas.

  • Cathy Mcguire Kosak

Weird…..but Scotty’s updates have always been late in the week,,,,,,,

  • heartly

    That is really strange.

  • justmefornow

Has anyone heard her album yet actually?
As for James it’s not like Celebrate is a Country album or full of Polka tunes, lol.

He went from Pop Rock, Rock, Hard Rock of MOABD to Pop Rock, Alt Rock, Psychedelic Pop Rock of Celebrate.

  • thirdtime

None of James’ fans said he is anywhere near being gold, LOL. I can’t speak for his entire fan base, but I am completely surprised that he has been hovering around 400 on iTunes – that’s way better than either of his previous singles did. Between the sales of the last two singles (barely even charting on iTunes), the notorious sophomore slump and the change in sound (which worried me that it might not please some of his fans) I was braced for the worst, so I am completely surprised and thrilled with how it’s selling so far. And usually a few interviews don’t sell much, but if that’s all that it is taking to sell this song so far, then I’m really excited to see what happens if it gets radio play!

  • justmefornow

    Exactly :)

  • Kirsten

Okay, that was weird…Scotty didn’t add one sale from that update. I
understand he’s not extremely high at itunes, but not one?

There are often updates where only a few people change or one person doesn’t change or whatever. Sometimes, I think HDD is just playing mind-games, but it’s probably some quirk in how things get reported to us.

I’m sure he did get iTunes sales, maybe the Country parts were reported early or late or some other weirdness.

  • Lexie O’Neill

    Thanks for taking the time…:)

  • H.A.

It’s the difference between then and now we are baffled about.

I think the difference is that in 2013 it doesn’t take that many single sales to chart #433 itunes where back in 2011 you needed way more sales to even crack iTunes. It doesn’t mean he is selling more than his last singles. If you look at album sales ranking on iTunes it takes a lot less sales to reach #1 than it did a few years ago.

  • Eilonwy_has_an_emu

Current album sales have dropped in that time period. Current singles sales haven’t, and iTunes hasn’t lost market share.

The most likely explanation is that, in the past two years, iTunes has tweaked its ranking algorithm. It’s always been a combination of actual sales and momentum, so a song that’s had a sudden surge in sales will rank higher than a song with the same sales level but selling steadily. It is VERY likely that iTunes has changed the relative weights of the factors or the way they’re calculated, as online services futz around with their algorithms all the time.

  • justmefornow

Well if that is true, everyone discussed here must be charting way higher nowadays as well. I wonder if others have noticed this higher charting with their singles?

One thing that still surprised me was how fast Parachute passed WYSLMT in popularity as his most downloaded song.

  • DragonFly

James had (album sales largely just talking Itunes specifically here) when it released. After his Idol perf of HTH, the album rec’d a great boost (people found out he had one lol). Later down the road, after a recording of HTH played on another Idol tour & SU @ football games, the popularity lines of those 2 songs were noticeably solid at times. The 2 released to radio singles appeared to nvr have been given REALLY good radio play and little tv promo—& yes I & some fans did like both those songs but maybe HTH could have made a diff being chosen—who knows?

  • Bernice

Angie Miller’s ThisChristmasSong and her rendition of OHolyNight released on iTunes. Beautiful songs!

Glad to see her being able to chart her songs, after the fiasco of YouSetMeFree.

    This Christmas Song is

    #363 overall

    #117 Pop

  • Baptized

Not sure. Daughtry might stick around the same numbers for a while. Probably will sell 18-29k for the next couple of weeks or so. :)

  • justmefornow

Well I just checked this morning and Parachute is no longer featured on the itunes main page Single section and has started to drop. So maybe that was the reason it was selling.
I did see Candice’s song is now featured there so maybe it will help her sales as well.

  • DragonFly

Well, at least we/he knows the song has appeal & could have legs when promoted decently. With more artists constantly trying to bring music out—I think charting on Itunes to that degree w/Parachute so early on w/not much more than speaking about it, speaks well for him.

  • justmefornow

I agree. I think the song has more mass appeal than maybe the ones from MOABD had.

Now the ball is in Wind-up’ s court. Let’s see what else they have planned. I think when this song goes to radio in Jan. it could well be a hit for him.
    We’ll see.
