Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov 19-25

Despite the slow down of the charts and a massive holiday weekend, we still have lots of milestones to celebrate. There are 6 milestones from Idols (representing Seasons 1,4,5,6,7 and 11), two from X-Factor and one from the Voice.

Let’s start with AC. Normally, this format is noted for the glacial pace of updates. It takes forever for a song to climb the chart and even longer for it to leave once it reaches the top 10 (Kelly’s Stronger was released as a single in mid-January and is still in the top 10). But, when the Christmas freeze hits, the glacier melts and this chart churns like crazy. Phil Phillip’s “Home” slides backward into the top 10 with a spin loss rarely seen on AC outside of this time of year. Correspondingly, the song will see a massive spincrease when the format stops playing Christmas songs in January. It will leave the song in a very good position for the new year and I would not be surprised to still see this year’s coronation song still on this chart when the next coronation song is revealed.

Speaking of those Christmas songs, Jordin’s “Do You Hear What I Hear” has moved into the top 20 on AC while Chris Mann’s “O Come All You Faithful” is now a top 40 song. CAC is another format being decimated by the sudden inclusion of Christmas songs, but that is good news too. Mandisa’s “It’s Christmas” comes from no spins to position 35 on the CAC chart this week. Also debuting is Jason Castro’s “Gloria (Hark! The Herald Angels Sing)” arriving in the top 50.

Pop sees three milestones. Original Recipe Idol, Kelly Clarkson’s “Catch My Breath” (anchoring her greatest hits album) moves into the top 30. Also hitting top 30 is UK X-Factor contestant Cher Lloyd’s “Oath”. Her season 7 co-contestants One Direction hit top 40 in the Pop format with their latest single, “Little Things”.

Carrie Underwood wastes no time moving into the top 40 on Country with her third single from her fourth album. “Two Black Cadillacs” is at 37.

Now let us circle back to where we began. Phil Phillip’s “Home” also achieved top 40 on Alternative Rock radio this week. That means “Home” has hit top 40 on 5 different formats and is currently topping the AAA chart. “Home” is likely to become only the second single from a male Idol to hit top 10 in all three mainstream formats (Pop, HAC and AC). I wonder if Clive is ruminating in his pool full of cash and wondering if he had chosen real coronation songs for the Idols when he was in charge, he might have another foot or two of money to swim around in.
