Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Nov 16-22

We celebrate this week with 4 debut milestones.

Let us start with HAC where it is deja vu all over again. Last week, Adam Lambert’s “Another Lonely Night” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Piece by Piece” debuted in the top 50. This week, both songs moved into the top 40. “Another Lonely Night” is the second single from Adams third studio album while “Piece by Piece” is Kelly’s third single from her 7th Studio album.

On Pop, we also have two milestones. One Direction performed “Perfect” on the AMAs last night and are receiving a lot of critical praise for that performance. This second single from their fifth album (which debuted last week) went top 20 on Pop. They currently have two songs in the top 20 in that format. Tori Kelly’s third single “Hollow” moves into the top 40.

On AC, stations are starting to transition over into their Christmas playlists (its not even Thanksgiving people). This caused a number of songs to lose their bullet or drop off the chart. But, appearing on the chart is Pentatonic’s “Joy to the World” which debuts in the top 50 – almost top 40.

Finally, on CAC, Idol Auditioner Lauren Daigle” lands another song on the chart. “Light of the World” debuts in the top 50 while “First” is still in the top 10.

Over on the album front, Justin Bieber’s number one is declared official by Billboard. With 649K in combined sales (522K in pure album sales), Justin has the best selling week of any artist this year (Drake’s “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” debuted with 545K). It is the highest the new combined chart has seen since its debut. It is the highest selling week since Taylor’s “1989” debuted with 1.29 on Nov 2, 2014. It is the largest for a male artist since Eminem in Nov of 2013. It is the largest sales week Bieber has ever had.

One Direction has to settle for their first number 2 album in their 5 album career. They sold 459K combined units and 402K in straight sales. For a week that was supposed to be close, they lost by almost 200K, but they won’t be sad about that because they greatly exceeded the sales predictions for their album. This is the first week that two albums have sold at least 400K in the same week since Susan Boyle and Alicia Key’s managed it in 2009.

This week also impressively featured 8 debuts in the top 10 which ties a record that has only been set 4 times. Also debuting this week is Nashville Star’s Chris Young coming in at 5th (65K combined and 57K pure sales). He will top the Country album chart.
