Monday Morning Mediabase Update: May 18-24

There are two Memorial Monday Mediabase Milestones – both by Idol winners – both by new Moms. Talk about multi-tasking.

First up is Carrie Underwood, Season 4 Idol Winner. She is currently working her second single from her “Greatest Hits” album. While it may seem unconventional to feature new songs on “Greatest Hits”, that’s the new convention. It gives the marketing team a way to keep your “Greatest Hits” album relevant for weeks so that you can sell more of them. Before, such albums sold well initially and then fell off the chart in a few weeks. Plus, it gives the artist a way to keep their name out there between new studio albums. Carrie’s second single from the album is called “Little Toy Guns” and it just went top 5 in Country. Carrie is one of the few women in the format who can achieve those high levels.

Over on HAC, we have the original Idol Winner Kelly Clarkson. She too is working her second single from her current album. That’s her 7th studio album which fulfills her commitment to RCA which she signed when she won (her “Greatest Hits” album is in addition to those 7 albums). Kelly performed “Invincible” on the BB Awards a few Sunday’s ago and was acclaimed by many to have had one of the best performances of the night. The song went for adds on HAC last week and moved quickly up the chart from 60th to 38th for a top 40 debut.

From first to latest, Nick Fradiani is our most current winner of Idol and his coronation song “Beautiful Life” goes for adds on Pop and HAC. I thought the song would lean more to HAC, but it seems to be having more initial success on Pop right now. It’s number 4 on the Pop Taking Off Chart.
