Giving additional hope to all that do not win, Carly Rae Jepsen tops the influential pop chart this week. She finished 3rd on the 5th season of Canadian Idol, but just kept plugging along. She originally wrote “Call Me Maybe” with a member of her band (Tavish Crowe…the one who does eventually get a phone number in the video) and the song became a hit in Canada before moving down to the States (and becoming a viral video sensation). She is the first Canadian Idol to get a hit on American radio (Hedley did chart on HAC). The song also went top 5 on HAC this week.

From the UK, One Direction’s frothy pop song “What Makes You Beautiful” even has their elders bopping along as the song reaches top 20 on AC. Their countrywomen, Rebecca Ferguson, reaches top 50 on HAC with “Nothing’s Real But Love” (that song had previously charted on the urban charts).

But, the Americans aren’t left off of their own chart. Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger” continues to dominate the AC chart at number 1. Her third single from her latest album is also making waves. “Dark Side” went for adds last week and now debuts in the top 50.

From our first Idol to our last: Newly minted season 11 winner Phillip Phillips (so nice they named him twice) charts for the first time. His coronation song “Home” has gone top 50 on HAC.

This is the daily numbers thread for Monday. Stats collected on Monday morning.

They perform these types of songs on the show, because a lot of the modern songs wouldn’t come across well on television, at least without a lot of rearranging.  But, that doesn’t mean that they have to release the same type of music once they come off the show.  The only reason they do is because 19 wants them to appeal to their AI fans, even though a lot of these fans will be gone by the time the second album is released.

Yes, I said that the add would pop up, but will be on the page for next week’s adds.  I think that there are a lot of reason for adding early, it seems like Z100 does it when they are heavily supporting a song, and want to get noticed.  With others, maybe the PD will be out on Monday or Tuesday.  And sometimes a major act might release a song after the add date, so everyone wants to say that they are the first ones to add a song.

I read through this thread and am no numbers expert.  I see a lot of
talk about the chances of Kris getting a second single and Adam getting a third.  What are the chances Interscope will give Haley a second single?  She seems to be doing a tad better than Kris, but not a lot.

Haley is actually doing a lot better than Kris in album sales. Hopefully gaining some traction in the BB chart this week when full album numbers are released tomorrow. This last week has been very good for “Free” with spins and HAC chart position, so it definitely hasn’t peaked yet.

I believe that Interscope is treating Haley like a new artist (which she is) and realize how much potential she has. I believe a 2nd single (Oh My!)is almost a given, but not for awhile. I think “Free” still has/needs more time to grow.

I was on hit predictor the other day and Oh My was one of the songs that came up.  I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Haley will get a second single.  TVOL is pretty much done IMO on HAC so I’m guessing that Kris will have a second single released pretty soon (not sure what RCA is waiting on).  I think Adam will get a third single regardless of how NCOE ultimately performs.

She’ll get a second single. But it may be awhile, because “Free” is actually doing decently on HAC in terms of gaining spins and AI right now

Dang… I’m calling it on Kris and Adam’s singles on HAC… They’re done. I don’t think new singles are going to perform any better, or be enough to salvage their eras. It’s just not going to happen for either of them. Radio is giving the cold shoulder to lotsa Idols, so what’s happening to them is not unique or isolated incidents. I keep looking for someone other than the big 3 alums to hit on radio – I’m giving up hope it’s going to happen for anyone this year, or anytime soon.

Orlando HAC station started playing NCOE yesterday. So far, 8 times since yesterday. Should be an auto add next week.

Rae Jepsen-That song does sound too young to be coming from someone in their mid
twenties.  I wondered if she’s alright with that, as well as how she
    comes off in the video.

I wonder if she would be alright with the song being her only “one hit wonder” if her album doesn’t give another one to secure her musical status on US market.

American Idol just fails at producing young pop acts and it’s so uncool
that even those few that try really hard to fit in don’t get a chance.
It’s not helping that Simon Fuller, 19 and Sony/Interscope have no
vision how to turn things around and manufacture their own pop
    sensation.

I don’t know what to think about AI producing pop-sensation, or any genre sensation…I’m thinking about DC’s, Adam’s and Kris’s first singles for example from their last albums, and taking them individually, free of any comparison with any hit songs, I can’t say that they are bad songs, not at all, but in the whole musical-contest they may not fit so well.
In my opinion, AI is a safe, family show that is supposed to give you a comfortable feeling and music through the “artists-next-door”, good-voiced winners and other popular runner-ups/idols to continue somehow the “tone” of the artist-image from the show  in order not to lose too many fans made/gained during the show-runs. Now, safe music and safe musicians are not the “bread and butter”, comfort music/artists for many listeners/viewers anymore and the post idol-music in the last 4 years is indeed too AC I think, since the new tone is given after 2008 by some artists like KP, GaGa, Kesha and others, well appreciated and supported by the industry. It is a reality that many musicians and many music lovers have to deal with in a good or bad way. There are some talented big-artists, but also lots of not so much but artificially supported though by some musical groups/moguls to keep the tone of “domination” with another, and another “business-song” in between. When idols will be supported by those groups and musical gurus and they(idols) willing to be part of them, then we may see an idol star other than Kelly(fist idol, good fan-base formed) and Carrie(country star) or to come with universal music like Adele’s to reach any genre/taste.

Driving in the car tonight with my two teenagers who had 20 on 20 playing on the radio, we heard both Chris Rene and Stefano twice each within an hour and a half.
My daughter likes both songs, but is convinced Stefano is going to have a a huge hit once the song gets played more on regular radio.

Me, I’m just glad I didn’t run off the road into a ditch listening to that station for that long.

I don’t know about Kris doing a lot worse than Haley. There’s only a difference of 7,000 units between them, it doesn’t seem that huge, to me anyway.
That said, Kris is in trouble. I hope he gets a second single asap, I don’t think this one will reverse the trend. NCOE is doing better but not that great either sales wise or radio wise. Music sure is a hard sell for Idols nowadays. They don’t seem to fare much better than new artists.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=195101108 Stefan Wind

Well, when I said Haley is doing “a lot better” I meant that her sales are actually keeping her afloat right now and in Kris’s case he’s tanking. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Kris fan and it sucks for me to say that.

I found some interesting information at Kworb’s site. Here are the (current?) international chart placements for the singles from Kelly, Adam and Carrie’s latest album.

Thanks for this, it is a good way of keeping track of international iTunes easily.

So for, it hasn’t been clear whether NCOE has peaked or not in individual countries. It is going to be easier to follow now.

And yes, this is the current position, not the peak. Stronger for example peaked at #6 on iTunes UK and stayed top 15 for three months, but is listed at #138
