Monday Morning Mediabase Update: June 29-Jul 5

Three milestones this week including two show records.

Two acts hit the top 5 in their respective formats. Fifth Harmony was a girl group formed on the second season of the X-Factor US Franchise. Much like the parallel group One Direction from the UK franchise, the group finished third, but got signed by Simon’s SyCo…and Simon was patient. That patience is paying off with Fifth Harmony making a splash on the social scene and finally achieving a top 5 single on Pop. “Worth It” also went top 40 on AC this week. The song is charting in all three mainstream formats plus Rhythmic. This is the first top 5 in any radio format for the X-Factor US franchise.

Meanwhile, Canaan Smith achieves his own show milestone becoming the first contestant from The Amazing Race to achieve top 5 on any airplay chart. That’s naturally less surprising since that show hasn’t featured a lot of musicians. Canaan Smith finished 6th on the 15th season of the show after his partner refused to go down a water slide (seriously). His doggedly pursued a music career since then and he has doggedly pursued this top 5 on Country. “Love You Like That” was released on July 21st of 2014, almost a year ago. It would take until October to reach the top 50 on Mediabase and then slowly climbed its way up the chart. Now, you can see really long chart runs on Country for the new acts, but it still really tough to make top 5 with one. Early adapters have long dropped off by the time you need to make that final push. Can Canaan make the top of the chart? He’s going to need at least three weeks of sustained high airplay to do that (most Country songs only spend one week at the top of the chart – Blake should start dropping quickly, with Jason taking the top of the chart this week and Easton next). That’s a long time.
