This week on the Mediabase round-up we have 2 milestones on AAA (who thought we’d ever say that?), two milestones on AC and one on each of Pop and HAC.

Let’s start with good old Phil. His coronation song (and favourite song of advertisers) continues to top the AC chart. While this isn’t a new milestone, number ones are always notable. This is his second week topping AC and is the third airplay chart he has topped. His new single hasn’t even gone, gone, gone for adds, but it is going, going, going up the AAA chart at a terrific rate. Last week it debuted on the chart in the top 50, this week it is already well into the top 40 and eying top 30.

From last to first Idol winners, Kelly Clarkson also has a milestone of note on AC. “Catch My Breath”, the single anchoring her greatest hits album went top 10 on AC. It’s still moving up on HAC and Pop and is in the top 20 in all three mainstream formats.

Across the pond to X-Factor UK and we have two milestones from them. Olly Murs’s “Troublemaker” featuring Flo Rida has entered the HAC chart in the top 50. The song is also almost top 20 on Pop. The new single from One Direction (“Kiss You”) is racing up the Pop chart hitting top 30.

Finally, we have the Voice also hitting two milestones. Vicci Martinez from season 1 just keeps slogging up the charts with her “Come Along” f. Cee Lo Green. The song is already top 30 in HAC and achieved top 30 on AAA this week. Over on AC, the latest Voice winner (no, not Blake) enters the top 50 with a song she sang on the show. Casssadee Pope’s “Over You” charts thanks entirely to spins from Sirius radio.

Nice to see some of the Voice alumni finally representing (especially Vicci Martinez). I’m a little confused about Cassadee’s first single being “Over You”, though.

I don’t think that’s her first single per se. It was her most popular song on iTunes by far. It’s like when radio played Chris Daughtry’s version of “Wanted Dead or Alive”.

Ok, I have an ax to grind, ‘course it has been bugging me for a long time.
Vicci Martinez’s single Come Along is a cover, carbon copy really of an old hit that I know  and love.
It was originally released in 2001 by Swedish singer Titiyo and became a bit hit in Europe. Her biggest song, signature song, for which she has won Swedish Grammie. It has became a radio stable, and still till this day receives spins in my neck of woods (Russia) as a matter of fact I have herd it only a few days ago on the radio.

Now I did feel rather sympathetic towards Vicci during her run on The Voice, and I get the anything to get a foot on the radio approach but man, for someone who was supposedly all about individuality, plus Cee Lo – the oddball of creativity and all they did was basically rerecording vocals to other persons signature hit?.. Again, great song from another decade. But it is not Vicci’s song. It’s some kind of “just add water” to the powder of old hit  scheme.
And, though I am glad that Titiyo got paid (at least I’m assuming that she did), it bugs.

Love covers, watch this shows for inventive covers, cordon copy cover released to the radio? Does not sit with me.

Certainly do not root for this release. And had lost a lot of respect for Vicci and her team.

Why lose respect for an artist for releasing a cover? Lots of artists, wayyyyyy bigger than Ms. Martinez have released covers as singles (e.g., Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Annie Lenox, etc.)

I thought that I made it clear that what bothers me is that this cover is a carbon copy of other persons signature hit.

In other words instead of inserting the existing song with her own individuality and style Vicci just imitated style of original singer while releasing the song under her name.

People that you have sited actually interpreted songs that they covered (something I can appreciate and see value in).

So it doesn’t look as if the Super Bowl ad with P2 in it had much of an impact in terms of iTunes. These current rankings are basically where the song and album were ranked prior to the SB yesterday

  • Liteasy

I don’t think many people saw this add – not in my city and from what I’ve read not in many others.

  • http://twitter.com/eilonwya10 Eilonwy

American Family did a bunch of similarly themed but different-in-specific-content local ads across ~50 markets, so P2 was probably shown in only a handful of those markets. That’s not likely to be enough TV exposure to move the needle substantially.

I know next to nothing about Titiyo and have not followed Martinez’s career at all, but if I compare the two versions, it sounds like they sped up the tempo, made it a duet, and added reverb to mix back the vocals while altering the instrumention to move it forward (admittedly, that signature riff is essentially the same). That’s not any kind of radical reworking but nor is it a carbon copy.

To me, this is roughly equivalent to Love Spit Love’s 1995 take on How Soon is Now by the Smiths. Very similar versions but slight changes in vocal takes and tempo. And they both received airplay and decent reviews.

The primary difference is that Love Spit Love was likely very familiar with the Smiths’ version when it was pitched to them, where it seems quite probable that Martinez had no idea that this was any artist’s signature hit as opposed to any other demo submission. Maybe she should have done more due diligence but if someone told most US artists that a Swedish singer was submitting the song, they’d assume it was a product of the Maratone/Cosmos Studios group (meaning Max Martin et al) or similar rather than a hit single.

You need to take into account that in the USA the most part of the music from Europe does not exist. Remember reaction when Phillip sang “Beggin’” or “Volcano” – about the fact that the author of the first songs were Americans remembered a few, about Madcon doesn’t heard nobody. About the “Volcano” did someone wrote that Phillip could release this song as the original single – if it is not known in the United States, the song did not exist. This is a strange attitude, but it is so.
If Vicci says whose is this song, it is a breakthrough – Madonna just buying the melodies of the time-tested hits, Gaga pretends that she wrote the song itself – we pretend to believe her. (It is strange that all sources are located in Sweden).

But I understand the idea, copy someone else’s song says the low level of the singer, if it does not have other songs or he does not add to song anything.

Four adds for GGG so far (2 Triple A and 2 HAC). I think 2/11 is also the adds date for the song on HAC (but I could be wrong).

  • girlygirltoo

10 adds is good, considering the song doesn’t officially go for adds until next week. GGG is off to a solid start.

would be cool if Colton somehow could end up with a Top 20 debut. Don’t know if he will, though

  • LongKissGoodnight

There are 35 monitored stations on the AAA panel.
GGG has 8 adds already, this is more than 20% of AAA panel before the adds date.
For a new artist aiming to establish himself as a fixture on the format that seems like a nice position to be in.

Ok, I have an ax to grind, ‘course it has been bugging me for a long time. Vicci Martinez’s single Come Along is a cover, carbon copy really of an old hit that I know  and love.

I know I’m late to respond, but I just wanted to say that Vicci has mentioned that “Come Along” is a cover in most of her interviews. She’s even spoken in depth about why she decided that it was such an important song to cover, and I agree with her. Plus I would never have heard it if it weren’t for her and Cee Lo covering it again, and it’s now one of my favorite songs.  I also don’t think it’s a carbon copy at all (especially considering that her cover is a duet), and it’s even more powerful when she performs it live with Jamar on tour. Anyway, below is one of her many interviews where she talks about the original song (starting at 3:35). I really don’t get why we shouldn’t root for it.
