In celebration of Oscar week, let’s kick the radio milestones with Idol’s only Oscar winner, Jennifer Hudson. Her new single, “Think Like a Man” from the movie of the same name and featuring Ne-Yo, went top 40 on UAC. This gives Jennifer two songs in the top 40 of that format and the song is also top 30 on Urban

Meanwhile, another top 30 song this week is Adam Lambert’s “Better Than I Know Myself”. The song is the lead-off single from his sophomore album that is expected out some time in April.

Kelly’s “Stronger” has been charging up all 3 Mainstream charts with some massive, jaw-dropping gains. It seems to hit a milestone almost every week and this week is no different. This week, the song hit top 5 on the Pop chart and has its sites set on number 1. This song is a beast.

Finally, the big news of the week is Carrie Underwood’s new single “Good Girl”. This song has only been out since late Thursday, but it flew up the charts in anticipation of its add date. Radio must have been hankering for a new song from Carrie because the song already has over 500 spins and almost a 5M AI. I expect it will be a big add date for this debut single this Monday. It could put up a spincrease for the week that we more usually expect with a big song on Pop. Impressive.

How is Kelly reaching Top 5 (3) on Pop not a milestone this week!!! :(

  • Anonymous

I’m so thrilled to see Carrie back on the country charts as a solo artist. “Good Girl” is going to be a monster hit and will hit the chart summit in no time!!! I believe this song can get a multi-week stint at no.1, something that Carrie has not done since “Just a Dream” in 2008.

Great week as well for Kelly. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” has a strong chance at returning to Billboard Hot 100 with continued spin increases and strong digital sales. I hope Kelly and Carrie both appear in Billboard Top 10 this week. That will be a sweet vindication for American Idol. Despite its eroding ratings, Idol can still brag that it has opened the door for two of the finest vocalists and most relevant artists that we have today!

Oh my gosh. I was so focused on doing the calculation on how soon she would top the chart, I completely missed that milestone. Thanks for the reminder. I’ll add it.

Wow!! TTWG #16…Way to go Scotty! I’m ready for his new single. ;-)

BTIKM’s jump is due in large part to spins from some Cumulus owned stations.  I guess homophobia wasn’t the reason why they had not been playing the song, as some speculated.  It looks like Cumulus’ usual way of adding songs, they waited for the song to have a better position on the chart.

  • Anonymous

    Nice update for BTIKM!

  • Avari

Isn’t that somewhat circular…are you saying that Cumulus stations are now playing BTIKM BECAUSE it rose higher on the chart, and it rose higher on the chart BECAUSE Cumulus started playing it?

BTIKM feels like it has been stalled at 30-31 for while now. I’m happy to see some upward movement, whatever the reason.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SYFK77IYLRQIVATQ2MJKSW2J7Y Pam

Congrats to all the idols on their new chart milestones especially Carrie!

  • Anonymous

This is what happens though. Some stations only play songs that have reached a certain chart position, and in turn, particularly if the spins come from a block like Cumulus stations, they receive a boost. The improved chart position  could in turn encourage more stations to play the songs…or not.. or a lot or very little, and the boost given by Cumulus stations may or may not mean that the song is taking off.

  • http://twitter.com/mistakes4sheep jadziadragonrider

Yay for Adam. Slow and steady, slow and steady. :) Whenever I see JDurbs’ song “Love Me Bad” I think of Ludo’s “Love Me Dead” and start singing it. lol

I keep meaning to check out more of Carrie’s songs. I adore “Undo It” she has such a great voice.

  • stargazed

Casey is holding strong and Clay moved up a spot.  I’ll take that!

  • Anonymous

Isn’t that somewhat circular…are you saying that Cumulus stations are now playing BTIKM BECAUSE it rose higher on the chart, and it rose higher on the chart BECAUSE Cumulus started playing it?

The week before the song had a bullet over 100.  I don’t think that it was just last week that they made the decision to get some of their stations to play the song.  Cumulus is known for waiting until songs reach a certain point until they will allow stations to start spinning them.

BTIKM has 6 early adds, all auto adds, all from cumulus stations, 1 big market station (Washington), this is why the song is gaining spins and AI this week.

Good Girl has 14 adds out of 39 stations reporting, following adds for Carrie’s song may be the least stressing activity of the week.

  • Valentin432

First american add for Carly Rae Jepsen, a top 40 station in Canton OH.

Yay Carrie! I looove Good Girl. Smash hit for sure.

Anyway, glad to see Scotty achieve a new peak at #16 but is it bad that I wish that TTWG would magically fall off and we can move on to YMTLG as the new single? I’m pretty sure that’s his new single since he’s been singing it everywhere.

  • Anonymous

Actually Adam has 7 Cumulus adds!!! One of them a #9 market, DC! And I see he has gone up on Canada HAC as well. YAY!

  • http://twitter.com/leilamaurizia2 reluctantlawyer

Good Girl is already #1 on the playlist of KAJA in San Antonio with 59 spins and 0.418 million AIs.

Yay for BTIKM! Maybe RCA has a plan afterall.  I still think there will be a second single timed with the album release, but it’s so nice to see the current single moving in the right direction.

  • YankeeFan08

BTIKM is movng up!  Yay for the Cumulus adds.  I think KBIG should also be adding today.

    Look at Carrie go!

  • Anonymous

I think they always had a plan, they just didn’t share it with us, lol. I hope BTIKM keeps this momentum and creates a nice situation for the second single. I am pretty sure there will be another one before the album launch, but again, RCA didn’t run it by me.

  • http://twitter.com/tinawinabina Tinawina

Look at BITKM making a run for it! LOL! Go song go!

    Damn Carrie. Heh.

Cumulas started playing BTIKM on Wednesday, February 22. At that time, BTIKM had a bullet of 9 and it was at 32. It had fallen from a bullet of 120 and from being at 31 from the week before.

What’s the magic number where Cumulas stations add? 32? Do Cumulas stations avoid spinning or adding a song at 31, but wait to do both when the song gets a negative bullet and drops a position to 32?

Cumulas started spinning BTIKM last Wednesday and has consistently spun it over the past five days. Today they added it, but there isn’t a magic position on the charts that Cumulas waits for.

  • http://twitter.com/whiskey401 Whiskey

Go little song go!! BTIKM just needs to get to top #20, top#10 would be amazing and than move on to single #2. Adam still has more promo coming. Come on adds.

  • Anonymous

It is wonderfu to see super fast chart movers like Carrie and Kelly go.  But a journey like BTIKM is far more tense and dramatic and makes chart watching interesting like underdogs make sports more interesting.  Watching Adam’s progress in the music industry is almost like an online novel.  So captivating!

  • HotHotHot

I find it kind of amazing that one station spinning BTIKM 13 times makes it debut on the AC chart
    .

  • Chrissie H

“….. glad to see Scotty achieve a new peak at #16 but is it bad that I wish that TTWG would magically fall off and we can move on to YMTLG as the new single?  ..”

Ehm — I too can hardly wait to get his next single out, but I don´t understand why his current TTWG would have to fall off to get his new single out. ??

Why can´t  he release a new single, no matter how the former is doing? Is this some “country music” rule? I mean, I can see other artists release more than one single at a time- so, why can´t he? I think there are several hit material songs on CAD   – but if songs only can be released in this snail- speed, there won´t be a chance to get out all those hit – potential – songs before he has to come up with a whole new CD.

  • Anonymous

Go Kelly, go Carrie, go Scotty, go Lauren, go Casey, go Jhud, go Ruben, go Adam, go idols! Idol is still the only show that gives these kinds of results in the US.

  • Anonymous

Normally, in country music a song has to drop, stall, or go recurrent before another single is introduced. This happens even for the big stars like George Strait, Taylor Swift, Jason Aldean, etc. Country does not usually have 2 songs by the same artist on the charts.

  • Anonymous

I hope TTWG gets even higher before the new song comes out…whatever that new song is.  Everyone keeps saying TTWG is not a good radio song but boy it sure gets a huge crowd reaction at the concerts: cheers when he begins and crowd singing along thru the chorus. And yes, I am thrilled to see it at #16 and hoping it can go even higher.

“Normally, in country music a song has to drop or go recurrent before another single is introduced. ….”

Thanks for answering. Ok, now I understand better, though I still regret this country music – law or rule or whatever it´s called. Well, then I´ll be counting on succes for the few singles he can get out there and turn my hopes to him becoming big like Taylor or Carrie or ..

Cumulas started playing BTIKM on Wednesday, February 22. At that time, BTIKM had a bullet of 9 and it was at 32. It had fallen from a bullet of 120 and from being at 31 from the week before.

Neither of us knows he magic position.   I doubt that most PDs put any stock in the daily mediabase chart.  Even on this board most people realize that the daily ups and downs of a chart don’t mean anything.   There is a reason why there is an official chart, it iss only released once a week.  While it’s highly unlikely that Cumulus made their decision based just on what BTIKM was doing last Wednesday, Cumulus’ add history shows that they usually don’t add songs until they reach a certain point, especially when they are block adding songs.  Look at their history on all formats, and say that this isn’t usually the case.

  • Anonymous

    96 adds for Carrie — that’s impressive :)

  • Anonymous

There isn’t a pattern of Cumulus starting to spin songs that are in the #32 position and have a negative bullet. BTIKM was at #31 the weekend before the 22nd.  I have not seen a history of start ups with Cumulas for that position either, but I will start watching the #32 and #31 songs in the next couple of weeks and see if that is their general way of doing things.

My guess is no one knows the magic position, because there isn’t one. They wanted to spin BTIKM and a few days later, they added it.

ETA: Just saw your last paragraph you added and I agree. It’s a good sign that Cumulas could see the potential in BTIKM and in predicting the future, decided that the song was worth spinning and adding to their radio stations!

  • YankeeFan08

Oh, was not expecting this add today for Adam:

Kiss 108 Boston (WXKS) Top 40

    Nice one!

Just came here to flail……Adam got a big add i.e. Kiss 108 Boston. Woohooooo! Go BTIKM, Glamberts and Adam!!!

  • windmills

I just wanted to point out that with Carrie soaking up 96 adds & big/pretty big weeks for Easton Corbin (39 adds), and Luke Bryan (24 adds) with Eric Church (19 adds), Lee Brice (17 adds), and Jason Aldean (16 adds) picking up the Cumulus auto adds, there really wasn’t much room for other people to pick up many adds. So for CaseyJ to pick up 4 manual adds is good to see. LDCIAN has now been added by over 100 out of the 140 stations on the published Mediabase country chart. 2 more adds and it’ll be on 3/4 of the country panel.

Lauren picked up an auto add from Seattle’s KMPS and another manual add, I expect GP to continue to grow. It’s been added by 79 stations on the published Mediabase country panel. Scotty’s ad was an auto add bringing him to 125 out of the 140 stations. For TTWG it’s less about new adds and more about seeing how long stations will keep his song in t20 rotation and possibly bump it up. He’s in a tough spot now with a bunch of fast rising superstar singles en route to passing him and not a lot of recurrent help coming in the next few weeks at Mediabase. My vote is for Mercury to move on to the next single but we’ll see if they’d rather ride out this wave and see if TTWG can at least match ILYTB’s peak.

What I find really impressive is Casey James’ LDCIAN slowly moving up the charts almost breaking the Top 20 this week.  His single has been out for many months and quite frankly I thought it would disappear during the Christmas music lull. The single came back stronger than ever as he picks up more new fans.  He’s so talented and has such a winning personality.  So happy for him!

I have already pre-ordered his album!

The song being at 32 wasn’t the turning point, it was the assumption by Cumulus that the song had the potential to continue to increase in AI, spins and chart position. Neither of us knows when Cumulus decided to play the song, or what their analysis told them that BTIKM was doing at the time.

You are right, neither of us works for Cumulas so neither of us has any idea of what the criteria is for this particular group of stations adding any song, including BTIKM. The assumption that Cumulus added BTIKM because it had had “potential” is also an assumption, but it is an assumption that is nothing but positive. It sounds good to me! :)

Like you stated earlier, PDs are in the business of predicting the future, so they must have thought that BTIKM had a future as far as radio play on their stations! Another positive in my book!

Just love the song – so happy it’s starting to climb.

    Mod Hat:

Nobody here works for any label, radio station or management company.

We can either just post the numbers or have a discussion about numbers. I like numbers, but that would just mean Pam got to post (love you, Pam, and all the work you do to bring us numbers!!!!!!)

This thread is to have a discussion about numbers. Please feel free to mentally insert “think that” after every “I” or liberally sprinkle “IMO”s in others posts as you read them (not when you quote them). People are free to interpret numbers and speculate as to what the stations/labels/stores are doing.  Readers can decide on their own whether to buy their musings or not.

Please don’t point out to people that they don’t work in the business. It’s pointless and actually breaks the rules. Post about Idols and numbers, not each other.  If you find yourself commenting on a fellow poster, stop (unless it is to thank somebody who brings us useful information like Pam).  And no, saying “Neither of us works for…” does not make it better.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

This is exactly how I feel also … “The little song that could …”  Just like the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race.  And just like you said, Whiskey, there is definitely more promo to come because he’s only done TV with Leno and Ellen; there’s got to be some east coast TV spots coming up and maybe even more on the west coast too.

I love this song and I’m so happy to see it moving up to #28 … little by little by little, it’ll get there.

  • LVD

I just wanted to point out that with Carrie soaking up 96 adds & big/pretty big weeks for Easton Corbin (39 adds), and Luke Bryan (24 adds) with Eric Church (19 adds), Lee Brice (17 adds), and Jason Aldean (16 adds) picking up the Cumulus auto adds, there really wasn’t much room for other people to pick up many adds. • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

So true … Adam’s ‘slow but sure’ rise can bring out the impatience in me, but after reading your logic and pragmatism, I have to agree with you completely.  It is captivating in that it definitely keeps you ‘hooked’ to follow it up up up.  And doesn’t Adam do that with everything he does?

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

I would have just the opposite ‘take’ on this … Kelly has been on the scene for 10 years and Carrie for 7 so they’ve ‘earned’ their respective meteoric chart risings and it almost becomes automatic from their fanbases just as it does for Streisand (still), Bon Jovi, and others.  Once you’re established, it becomes easier to move more quickly up the charts.

For someone like Adam, otoh, who is still ‘struggling’ to make his permanent mark, it’s going to take longer, but put 5/7 years under his belt and see what happens.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Kelly and Carrie but they are established and deservedly so, but I just see their longevity an asset rather than a liability … ;)

  • Anonymous

It’s not just the length of time that they have been out, they have the hits to justify their meteoric rises.  Kelly and Carrie started stacking up number ones and top ten hits with the release of their first albums, and really haven’t stopped since.

  • http://twitter.com/AdamsArmyGirl Linda Vastardis

I love it too and it became even more impactful and meaninful to me after the video because it just added more dimension to the lyrics and the overall influence of what BTIKM is all about.  It’s intricate and multi-layered and that’s my favorite type of song ….

Go Adam BB … make it a ‘sure fire winner’ …. “gonna take you to the top to the brink of what you believe, yeah!”

  • Anonymous

So true.  Great that Kelly and Carrie are zooming up the charts, but that’s expected now – good for them.  The excitement, for me, is watching the breakthrough of a talent like Adam’s – who’s had more of a struggle.

  • cwm

In this interview on the red carpet for Elton John’s Oscar party, Adam says a few very interesting things about Trespassing:
    1. It is delayed “about a month”
    2. He decided to include some new stuff at the last minute.
    3. One of those last-minute songs is a Bruno Mars song. “It’s a great song”
    4. Adam was in the studio with Bruno TODAY working on that song.

    Yippee!

    Adam’s bit is at 2:10:

Kiss 108 Boston (WXKS) Top 40

That’s a nice add for Adam’s song, and interesting.  Ironically, WXKS was the biggest Pop station to add TT, and around the same time, Kris performed at their station staff party & their big Jingle Ball-like concert in the spring.  Do they have a big event coming up?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

Well if what you say is correct and they normally have a jingle ball like concert in the spring, wouldn’t that be happening sometime in the next few months? Maybe Adam will play at the concert, yay!

  • Anonymous

Adam played at the Boston concert two years ago the same year Kris did. I have no idea if they still do those concerts or not.

  • Anonymous

I don’t know about country but it’s crazy hard to maintain a career in Pop for ten years. So for Kelly to be headed for a #1 on Top 40 at this point in her career is quite a feat. And Carrie was the last artist to sell 7 million albums in the US (her debut album) until Adele passed her. So she’s been knocking it out of the box from day 1.

But the big hurdle for Idols is always album #2. The ones who put out a successful second album have achieved a major milestone in their career.

  • Anonymous

Yes, Kelly’s doing great and Carrie is a powerhouse.  Came to fame when the music biz was a lot different and managed to retain their popularity.  Good for them.  They’re established artists and predictable.
It’s more interesting, IMO, to watch those who are still trying to make it like Adam, Kris, Durb – whoever.  The struggle is what’s fascinating.

  • windmills

Thank you for saying this jpfan2.

Linda Vastardis: Kelly has been on the scene for 10 years and Carrie for 7 so they’ve ‘earned’ their respective meteoric chart risings and it almost becomes automatic from their fanbases just as it does for Streisand (still), Bon Jovi, and others.  Once you’re established, it becomes easier to move more quickly up the charts.

Then why aren’t Avril Lavigne, Michelle Branch, and Hillary Duff who were all big at CHR/HAC around the same time Kelly started out still churning out big CHR/HAC hits? Avril and Michelle were plenty established at the time their CHR fortunes started to fade, and Hillary had the Disney machine and years of multimedia stardom in her favor.

Carrie’s in a radio format that plays 1 female song for every 4 or 5 male songs. It’s an understatement to say that females have extra hurdles to get past in order to get airplay, never mind to get consistent airplay. (I’m not taking Good Girl’s hit status for granted either, it’s
obviously starting huge and early response is great but we’ll see where
it peaks. Gretchen Wilson was the toast of the town in 2003-2004, but the lead single for her sophomore album flamed out after starting big at country radio, the subsequent singles did even worse, and her album sales are in the tank now.

It’s blatantly false that chart risings are “automatic” for people like Kelly and Carrie. It may be true that they’re more likely to get initial attention for
their singles because of who they are but they’re definitely not
guaranteed success at the level they’ve achieved. They deserve a lot more credit than that for being able to stay relevant and produce hit singles for this long in an industry with such a high level of turnover.

“Adam played at the Boston concert two years ago the same year Kris did. I have no idea if they still do those concerts or not.”

Pretty sure Kris did the Jingle Ball, Christmas 2009. Adam did the Spring concert in May of 2010.

  • Anonymous

I agree 100%! I do think the adds come faster and they are pretty much automatic for them at this point, but it’s due to the fact that they have proven themselves over and over for the last 7-10 years.

Kelly and Carrie do get a certain amount of leadway, but they deserve it! They are consistently making good music and have been able to stay current in their respected genres of music. Both of them should get the respect of DJs, PDs and others in the music industry. They’ve earned it!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MV64BS4FSISCASL4P656RXAFYQ Kayla

I don’t know about their Jingle Ball, but I googled the Kiss 108 spring concert after it was mentioned here and both Kris and Adam played it in May 2010. Threads here for each of their performances even came up in the search.

  • Anonymous

Nope. Kris & Adam played the same outdoor Boston concert.  Kris did the station party the night before. It was an outdoor venue so was not during Christmas.

Spring of 2010 was when WXKS added TT.

  • Anonymous

It looks like the label is sticking with BTIKM now, so hopefully, it is going to make good progress.

  • Anonymous

Hillary Duff was a pop star? I remember watching Lizzie Maguire in middle school but I don’t remember her having a career outside of that. Interesting.  And I agree, Kelly’s longevity is incredibly impressive.

Adam probably will perform btikm, so hopefully it’ll keep rising and getting good adds. :)  Though it’s possible, I guess, that he’d perform his second single on the show depending on when they start it.

  • Anonymous

Adam played at the Boston concert two years ago the same year Kris did. I have no idea if they still do those concerts or not.

I didn’t get the impression that Adam liked the setup of that concert, but maybe if he does the Spring one this year, he’ll have a better time.  That’s the concert where they booked dozens of established and a few unknown singers, started around 1 or 2 in the afternoon, and had them all perform on one stage until around 10 pm.  It’s rough, because the acts that come on at the end of the night have to stay at the venue for the entire concert.

Since they are Z100′s sister stations, they need to ask them about the rotating stage that they use for the Jingle Ball.  It makes the concert go by faster, since people don’t have to wait for bands to setup.  The good news is that it’s a popular concert that usually sells out.
