Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Aug 24-30

Wow! The VMAs are sucking a lot of oxygen out of the room. Artists chose this weekend for several new single releases and the Pop chart has shuddered. Bieber leads the pack with his single released on Friday. “What Do You Mean” heads up the spincrease chart with 3012 spins in just three days on 194 stations (138 stations with +7 spins). Macklemore and Lewis “Downtown” was released on Thursday and it is second with 2671 since then (176 stations with 117 starter stations). Finally, Taylor Swifts latest single “Wildest Dreams” was sent to radio on Wednesday and it has 2482 spins on 163 stations (99 starter stations). As a result, the Biebs debuts at 26th, Taylor Swift at 28th and Macklemore and Lewis at 29th. If your favourite’s spincrease is down this week, now you know why.

X-Factor produced two milestones this week. One Direction’s “Drag Me Down” (debut single for their fifth album) exploded onto the chart a few weeks ago. This week, the song moves into the top 15 on Pop radio. Leona Lewis’s “Thunder” goes top 30 on HAC.

Two milestones on Country to mention this week. Chase Rise from Survivor goes top 10 with his “Gonna Wanna Tonight”. This is his second single from his “Ignite the Night” album to go top 10 in that format. Also, Carrie Underwood is now top 30 in Country with her newly released “Smoke Break”. It actually went top 30 last Monday, but we are shifting back to Monday updates from Sunday updates last week (we were on Sunday updates because I was out of the time zone).

Another milestone that got caught in the Sunday->Monday shift was Adam Lambert’s “Ghost Town”. The song was top 30 on AC last Monday (but not Sunday), giving him three songs in the top 30 at that point – all three mainstream formats – including top 20 on HAC.

Finally, Tori Kelly preformed “Should’ve Been Us” to much critical acclaim last night on the VMAs. The song, her second single from her just released album, went top 30 on HAC.
