Monday Morning Mediabase Update: Apr 30-May 6

No milestones this week from Idols, but the X-Factor contestants have it going on (or as the Dawg would say, “They are in it to win it!” When I start quoting the Dawg, I know I need more sleep). Not content with having a top 10 hit on Pop, One Direction from UK XF added “One Thing” to the top 50 chart. Meanwhile, their debut single, “What Makes you Beautiful”, went top 15 on HAC. Representing the US franchise of the show, Marcus Canty’s debut single “Won’t Make a Fool Out of You” went top 40 on Urban. The third and fourth place finisher of that show already have top 40 hits…when will we get music from those who came in first and second?

In other news, this week is a big week for adds with no fewer than 5 songs from singing competitions being promoted to radio. Cheryl Lloyd from UK X-Factor, Marcus Canty from US X-Factor and 3 of the original reciepe top 4 who were finally acknowledged by The Voice this week (Javier, Vicci and Beverley) have songs going for adds on various formats. Adam Lambert’s debut single,”Better Than I know Myself”, from his second album fell off our charts this week as his second single continues to gain spins.

According to AO, Adam’s Behind The Music will re-air on VH1 on May 13th. Nice timing!

I can’t believe this amazing, incedible filthy pop album about boozin’ and fuckin’ is coming from someone who almost won freaking american idol. lmfao

I expect metacritic score in high 70′s, i’m giving the album 8.5/10. The glambert in me wants to give 9, but then i remember the 2 awful old lame Dr. Luke produced singles, so 8.5 it is.

Shady on the other is completely flawfree and the best song evaaaaaaaaaaah.

I still hate NCOE with passhun, but F*CK YEAH give me those adds, Tampa!

I guess now i should listen to Carrie’s album also, since i hate her single too, but liked the title track she sang on idol. Oh labels, you rich little clueless witches *pets*

  • Anonymous

    Shady is ridiculously funky!

  • Anonymous

Actually, there is a milestone for an Idol. Although it’s at 41 this morning, Kris’ single is #40 on the official published HAC chart for the week

Yay…Adam got his first HAC add for the week…WSJT Tampa… :)

That is my local station!!  I heard it on the radio over the weekend and it sounded fantastic.

  • mmb

Unfortunately it’s airing at 3 am. :(. But fuse is re-running Adams sexy beats (lol) shows repeatedly at all hours of the day pretty much every day between 5/12 and 5/20. And Chelsea lately is 5/10.

  • YankeeFan08

Your post made me LOL  It’s so true. right?  Not your typical Idol album!  Adam’s a smart guy.  He knows he needs to move away from the Idol bubble.

I’ve listened to the entire album. It’s fantastic!

Shady needs to be a single!

  • Anonymous

I’ve listened to the entire album. It’s fantastic!

Have you got a link to listen to the full album, please?

It’s a great pop album, i thought it will be based on the snippets, but it’s nice to know it for sure :D

    Yep, it’s officially a top 40.

Nope. I’m just tired. Vicci and Beverley have very similarly named singles though.

    Thanks. I’ve updated the post.

    —- 98 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Good In Goodbye – 12 0 0.086
    —- 107 CARRIE UNDERWOOD See You Again – 8 0 0.073
    —- 112 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Two Black Cadillacs – 8 0 0.044

    —- 124 CARRIE UNDERWOOD Forever Changed – 7 0 0.050

Not surprised that “Cupid” got the most spins.  I am surprised that “Wine After Whiskey,” one of the more country tracks on the album, didn’t get played as much.

TThe album is amazing. From the fun, sexy songs to the party songs and Shady is fantastic. But Damn, Underneath hit me hard emotionally. His voice in that one omg.

His lower register in Running was surprising. His range is shocking.

I for some reason have a funny feeling about Stefano’s single. I can’t get it out of my head…I have a feeling we may be seeing the first bonafide pop hit from a non kelly idol in years.

can you share the link please? I can give you my email add if it’s not allowed to post the link here. pretty please:)

    No music trading here.

    nvm.

Suffice it to say, I’m not posting music from Adam’s album until it’s legal, and I probably will do the iHeartRadio giveaway, but make it available only to my regulars here (won’t be taking twitter or email entries.)

After being bullied pretty badly on twitter a few weeks ago, I almost want to skip it all together.

That really sucks, MJ.  I hate how overzealous some of the fanbase is.  :(

  • newinNM

Wow! First I respect the fact that it’s your blog you can do and say what you want, and agree until it’s available for streaming here in the states it should not be posted.  But (IMHO) your comment is a little unprofessional and completely unnecessary.

Why just not avoid it totally? In fact ban Adam mentions from your blog period? I think most of your traffic is from general idol stuff anyway, so why not make it an Adam-free zone? It would not cut down your hits much I would guess and after a short while I’m guessing most of your fanwars would evaporate as well. *shrugs* It’s your blog, your rules. If people don’t like it, they’ll go elsewhere.

I agree. It’s your blog MJ. You can and have done what you want. Don’t post about him and don’t allow your readers to post or comment about him at all. No numbers, headlines, nada. Your problem would be solved and fans would go elsewhere. There are plenty of fan sites and other blogs that do cover him.

I noticed you deleted the post I replied to, not sure why since it was just a reply to your initial post.

I am a fan of Adam’s music and I think of myself as a pretty mellow poster.   Are we all being lumped together?   Do people think only Adam has cray cray fans?  LOL.

I enjoy reading news about Adam as well as other idols.   If there is no Adam news, I won’t visit as often but I will still visit for Wednesday and Thursday show recaps.

ETA- ok my post doesn’t make sense since the suggesions by others to ban all Adam news has been deleted.

Wanted to add, I don’t mind if you wait until the songs are legally available. Whatever works for the blog is good for me. :)

Perfectly understandable, Pam.  Thanks for the posting you do–appreciate the numbers every day!!

First off, thanks for the informative list. As for “Wine and Whiskey”, I understand your surprise but, really, it makes sense. There is very little country influence at country radio these days. And, when The Queen of Country Music (which in my eyes Carrie is) releases a hard rock song as the lead single for a new era, it’s just one more nail in the coffin. Country radio, with its influx of pop program directors and bottom-line corporate heads making the programming decisions, simply is not very interested in country songs. A few make it, but those few are overwhelmed by the wave of pop and rock songs on the charts.

It’s a debate that has raged for years. My first memory of it was with Marty Robbins. But, this time I think the genre has reached the tipping point. The pop sounds have brought a whole new audience to country radio…fans that would never have given the genre a second thought a few years ago.

The down side is that lovers of country music no longer have a place on radio to find the music they want. The industry’s own surveys show that 1 in 5 country music fans no longer listen to country radio. I am among that 20 percent.

My biggest hope is that some day there will be a split similar to what happened years ago with Pop/HAC. Windmills said there have been discussions about it but not by the people who matter: the corporate heads and station owners. Still, one can hope. So, when one of the most traditional country songs on Carrie’s album is ignored by radio in favor of others, color me not surprised. A little bit sad, though.

So sorry to hear that you were bullied, MJ.  I obviously support my Idol (nothing to do with Adam), but am baffled by the harshness of some…

Hope you have a great Monday!  I, for one, appreciate the information and knowledge gained here.

You see Good Girl as a hard rock song?  I think that a lot of hard rock artists would disagree with that.

  • AllenTX

thanks. does it have add date? is he doing radio round now? I just wonder how hard his label is pushing it?

  • Mike M

OK, strike hard rock. My point was, it’s far from country.

elliegrll: You see Good Girl as a hard rock song?  I think that a lot of hard rock artists would disagree with that.

I see where Mike M is coming from on this. Of course Good Girl isn’t straight out hard rock, but the 80s arena rock influence is much more apparent on Good Girl than the country influence and it’s the most aggressive sounding song on country radio right now.

After hearing Blown Away (the song) and Carrie’s comments that GG was chosen as the lead single because it had thematic similarities to her previous work but still sounded different, I think GG was chosen as a lead single mainly to set up Blown Away the song as the 2nd single. Blown Away’s production doesn’t have a whole lot to do with country music either, though Carrie’s voice on the verses sounds pretty country and the story is signature to country.

But, as far as why those 2 songs are the 1st 2 singles off the album instead of Cupid’s Got A Shotgun/Leave Love Alone/Wine After Whiskey, I think there’s a deliberate effort to push the envelope in the context of Mike M’s argument about the state of country radio today. That having been said, Good Girl is struggling to move up through the t10 more than any other Carrie single. That’s either because Carrie’s label hasn’t slathered on the radio promo or because the sound of GG is a problem for country radio coming from a girl or both.

And, maybe it’s worth noting 2 out of the 3 top album tracks as far as spins are Cupid’s Got A Shotgun and Leave Love Alone, both of which are undeniably country. I definitely think Arista Nash is going to send some countrier tunes to country radio after the title track has had its run, it’s going to be interesting seeing which ones they choose. What’s also interesting is neither GG nor BA sound much like anything on any format of radio right now. So, it’s not like they’ve tailored the songs for cross format play.

Mike M: My biggest hope is that some day there will be a split similar to what happened years ago with Pop/HAC. Windmills said there have been discussions about it but not by the people who matter: the corporate heads and station owners. Still, one can hope.

I feel like there’s a bunch of stations that feel pulled in different directions: maintaining their inclusion on the BB and/or MB panels (which affects the attention they get from labels) depends on them playing a certain percentage of current songs, they have the opportunity to attract new listeners who prefer soft rock and heartland rock and are drifting away from HAC, but they’ve got some of their core listeners who actually want to hear country. This article by the Nashville Scene made a couple relevant points about country radio:

That same CRS poll affirmed that the popularity pendulum has swung back toward crossover country, and harder stuff is a turn-off to the genre’s casual listeners.

So we’re hearing women working with traditional country sounds while they sing about staking claim to personal freedom and demanding equal footing in relationships, and men more frequently drawing in rock sounds while they define redneck identity and traditional masculinity in their lyrics.

With all the soft rock fans who are finding country radio thanks to Lady Antebellum and Blake Shelton and all the heartland rock fans who are finding country radio thanks to Jason Aldean and Eric Church, it’s pretty obvious why traditional country fans are losing out at mainstream country radio.

But, I think there are enough of them who would come back if there were a traditional country format that wasn’t diluted by soft rock/heartland rock if for no other reason than to make a statement about the kind of music they love. Meanwhile all the soft rock/heartland rock fans would probably be happier if they didn’t have to tune out Alan Jackson’s latest. (*le sigh*) Another nice thing would be that the development of a traditional country format would provide an incentive for labels to develop traditional country acts, because there would be a radio home for them that could result in a payoff in sales.

I think it is stream quality and it is still brilliant.CD quality will be even better, IMO, so don’t know how I am going to survive that, it is so good.

It has a CHR/Top 40 add date of May 22.

I don’t really follow Stefano’s career so I don’t know how much radio promo his label has set up for him. I did see on twitter that he had an in-studio performance at the CHR station in SD last week, so it appears he is doing some promo, anyway.

I personally think that Carrie chose GG single because she wants to go International more. That’s my opinion. London’s Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House ,etc.

Windmills, since you were here:))  Over the weekend, when Blair Garner and his show went to visit, interview, and film Scotty…the new CEO also went to Garner (Mike Dugan?).  I was very surprised, but, then again, I know I still have a lot to learn…is this common?

In his interview, the CEO put a release date for Scotty’s next cd as Fall 2013 and promised that it would be light years better than CAD:))

And I would love a traditional country radio format!

Mike Dungan, formerly the head of Capitol Nashville, now head of Universal Nashville. I’d say it’s a good thing that he’s getting himself acquainted with his new acts, since he’ll be working their current releases and working to develop new albums with them. It’s a nice sign all around that Mike Dungan considers Scotty a priority. I expect he’s doing similar things with most if not all of Mercury Nashville’s acts. Maybe not traveling as far but in Scotty’s case, they obviously need to make sure they’re all on the same page as far as his time in college/NC and his timing working. It’s great that Dungan saw Scotty in his natural habitat.

I don’t think Dungan said anything about Scotty’s new album coming out in Fall 2013. That was a rumor from a fan, and frankly I think that would be insanity because I don’t think radio or the label is interested in a 4th single off Scotty’s debut and he can’t afford to be off the radar that long. I still expect a new lead single around CMA time and a new album in February/March 2013.

Lexie: And I would love a traditional country radio format!

Scotty’s another guy who would benefit because he might have more freedom to make a more traditional leaning album, as opposed to his debut which was produced contemporary country. Not to say he can’t have a few songs that could cross between traditional and contemporary (Write My Number On Your Hand is a great example of a song that would work on both kinds of stations IMO) but I think the CAD production was spiffed up and made contemporary for the sake of today’s radio.

Thank you for your reply!  I didn’t even catch that Dungan didn’t say anything about the release date–good catch on your part.  I just actually got to listen to his interview (After Midnite is a little late for me).    I also agree that it’s a great sign that he traveled to see Scotty–they said Dungan has only been at the job for a week.  The CEO also said he has ideas for Scotty and they’ve been collecting/looking at songs.  Scotty said that he’s been sending his A&R guy songs and been receiving as well.

And about the traditional radio–maybe my hubbie and others would listen again:))

    Thanks again!

I swear this past year is the most I have paid attention to country music charts or country music in general. I feel like a professional, on how much I have learned about their charts from reading the comments. I thought I wasnt going to be following the country charts but I cant help it since so many of our country idols have charted this past year and they seem to be the most talked about, besides maybe Adam and Kelly. But now even Kelly has gone country.

Now I even know more history about their charts and how the charts have been working for a few years now for country artist and I wasnt even following the charts before.

That is some very encouraging info.  It’s nice to hear that the new CEO has some great plans for Scotty down the road and seems to believe in his talent and was willing to go visit him on his home turf.  Like windmills said, I can’t see the label waiting till next fall on the album release if we aren’t going to see a 4th single from the current album.

    Thanks Lexie!  :)

Why, that’s a switch:)  I’m usually thanking you.  You’re welcome:))

HAC addboard wasn’t too kind to either Kris or Adam today… Not looking good atall for TVOL if more stations don’t come aboard and spin, but I’ll give it another week or so before calling it… NCOE has a little more time, but I’d have thought HAC would be responding better at this stage to it than they did BTIKM… Waiting to see how much butt Carrie kicked last week saleswise. Downloaded her CD on release day, and I’m liking it.

TVOL is a great song.  Anybody have any theories why it isn’t doing better?

Maybe because Carrie released her new album. All the promos are for her. Every TV show, every radio and even print ads (for Olay).

Good. It’ll be interesting seeing Mike Dungan does with Scotty. He’s got a platinum plus seller on his hands and as the incoming label head I’m sure there’s some pressure to convert that into a sustainable success. I have mixed feelings about Mike Dungan in that he’s the guy who famously made Darius Rucker ditch all the very traditional songs he’d written for his debut country album for contemporary country songs. It worked for Darius’s 1st country album but his 2nd country album was way bland and even more in that direction. But, he’s also the guy that let Eric Church be who he is and look at how Eric’s doing now (Mike Dungan is not responsible for what comes out of Eric’s mouth).

Another reason I feel very sure they’re going to move on from Scotty’s debut album after WTT is that I’m sure all the new personnel brought in with Mike Dungan have their own ideas about what Scotty should do to advance his career and secure his spot at country radio. They’ll want to implement that on a fresh new album and it’s more likely the new personnel will get behind a product they’ve had a hand in developing.

Apropos of the discussion yesterday in the Weekend Countdown thread that could be a reason they move on from Lauren’s debut album after a 3rd single too, but I still feel like there isn’t yet a definitive conclusion about whether that album has more career-building singles if the next one makes t20.

It is vanilla compared to what’s played on HAC currently.
