Light On is listed under Archie??? Someone needs to change that.

Alright! A “Light On” remix!!! Great to see it resurfacing.

  • noctem seizure

Oh come on, can’t you just hear those melismatic runs on the chorus and the bridge….?

  • gerreb

I didn’t know Archie recorded “Light On” too….LOL

  • ggdoorsfan

I vaguely remember reading a review this past week where it was mentioned that Light On was a song Archuleta could probably sing – and do it well! :cool1_tb: Now that WOULD be veddy, veddy interesting! :laugh_tb:

  • FolkFan

In addition to Light On being DC’s and not DA’s, the #45 on Pop (up from 51) is Light On, not ToML. ToML officially went recurrent on both HAC and Top 40 this weekend. Who would have thought that Magic Rainbow would have the kind of staying power to go recurrent on two (and, ultimately, three) formats, as well as the Hot 100?

  • ggdoorsfan

    Anyhoo… good numbers David A! :happy_tb:

  • LK08

Folkfan- I am still learning about all of this. What does it mean exactly to go recurrent?

  • gabam

Go Bucky. He has had all three of his singles within the Top 10 on Country.

I think TOML just missed out going recurrent on top 40. It was removed from the list because it was 20 weeks old and no longer in the top 20, however. To go recurrent I believe the song has to be 20 weeks old at least, be below 20 on the chart (I think it’s 20), but above 40. TOML just missed out by moving below 40 to #45 last week.

It did, however, go recurrent on Hot AC.

I think this is the first time I’ve noticed that the Monday numbers aren’t based on the published weekly Mediabase chart, which is essentially the frozen Sunday afternoon chart. Crush is #13 on the published chart this week and only moved down to 14 today because Womanizer passed it. Crush is a bit of a turtle right now in movement. lol. Always gains spins, but not like the Britneys of the chart.

Nice upward movement from both Davids on the Hot AC chart! Top 20 for Archie and Top 30 for Cook!

Folkfan- I am still learning about all of this. What does it mean exactly to go recurrent?

I’m not Folkfan, but the simplest definition of a recurrent is an older song that is still being played on the radio. Recurrents still get to chart on Billboard (in special recurrent charts), and are more apt to be played years down the line by radio stations looking to fill up their playlists. That’s not to say a station won’t bust out a non-recurrent older song, but recurrents tend to be the more popular and long-lasting songs anyway. Different charts have different rules for how a song can go recurrent (how many weeks it has to be on, what chart position it has to be below and what chart position it has to be above).

Recurrents are removed from all the current-based charts to make room for newer songs. For example, the Hot 100 and Hot 100 Airplay charts remove all recurrents before publishing, even though some recurrents could be charting quite well still.

  • LK08

Thanks soundscene. We can always count on your for good information.

I am amazed at how well Crush continues to do. It was hovering aroung 16 in the itunes tops songs chart and is at 14 now. It has been steady at 7 on the pop chart. That is really good.

  • sma11ie

Really? That’s great, right? Almost in the top 40? But why, why, why have I still never heard the dang (tm Archie) thing one the radio? Everyone I know who knows DC still associates him with TOML. I can’t wait for that to change.

  • FolkFan

Ahh—I had read that it had gone recurrent on Top 40, but that must have been an error.

If LO continues to gain spins at around the same rate as it has been, it should continue to move up HAC, but it probably needs a bit of a jolt to keep moving up many spaces on Top 40. I don’t know, maybe an SNL appearance would do the trick….

  • soundscene

^^ Because despite being almost top 40 LO only gets about 835 spins per week (730 or so of those monitored by Mediabase) total from pop radio. You can add in 600 (less than that monitored) or so more spins from Hot AC, but the combined total number of spins isn’t a whole lot considering medium rotation songs (20-11 on the chart) get 3500 to over 5000 monitored spins per week on pop alone (more if you count all stations, not just the monitored ones). And those are medium rotation songs. LO simply isn’t added to a lot of station playlists yet.

Oops! Damn jet lag. I’ve fixed it now.

I’ve never heard “Crush” or “Light On” on the radio in my home country, but I heard both while I was in Asia last week. The DJ that talked about “Light On” after it was played said that he could hear that it was clearly influenced by “90′s Mandarin Rock” (and played a song snippet to prove it). I thought it was funny based on all the influences others have reported hearing in the song. “Light On” appears to be chameleon song. That’s got to be a good thing.

  • cruzceleste

^You were in Asia, so f**** cool… you are my idol!!!! lol

  • sma11ie

soundscene, thanks for the stats. Looks like LO has a long way to go before I’ll hear it. I will be patient :) .

LOL, Kirsten, that’s really funny. Can you imagine Chris Cornell being influenced by Mandarin Rock?!

  • Mariam94

Just curious, where does “Light On” and “Crush” stand on itunes?

  • soundscene

    Just curious, where does à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Light Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Crushà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ stand on itunes?

    Crush-14
    Light On-39

That was me who misled you, Folk Fan. Sorry! I misunderstood what I saw on All Access yesterday.

Both Davids moved up a few spots on Top 40 yesterday because of other songs going “recurrent” or off the chart, thus allowing a lot of songs to move up. This is not to disparage their jumps. They had to BE on the list in order to move up on it. :) And now they’re both in even better positions.

I think Cook got the benefit of the recurrent-removal on Hot AC and Top 40, and Archie on Hot AC only (bump from 22 to 20, I think). Crush is too far up top 40 to benefit from recurrent removal (he’s in the top 20 where older songs can’t become recurrents). Crush actually got bumped down a couple spots from last week because of faster moving songs (Addicted by Saving Abel and Womanizer by Britney Spears). Never lost spins, just going slower than those two and they passed it. It’ll move back up when Jordin’s One Step at a Time and Secondhand Serenade’s Fall For You finally fall out of the top 10.

    I think you’re right. :)

AC won’t turn the light on….

  • FolkFan

I believe that Magic Rainbow is hogging AC. [I must admit that Magic Rainbow's tenacity amuses me to bits. In addition to ruling AC, it has pushed its way back up into the 70s on itunes. Heh.] I also must admit that I’m not particularly fussed about AC—it tends to add more slowly than some of the other formats, plus the “lots of Christmas music” time is coming up, so the number of spins available on AC will be lower in about a month.

I’m intrigued to see the rock adds tomorrow. A Chicago station added LO a couple of weeks ago but hasn’t appeared to be playing it much, if at all. But a St. Louis rock station has been playing it 1-2 times a day.

  • frogcooke

folk fan… chicago is picky.. two of chicago stations played crush then suddenly dropped it like a hot potato… theres still one that plays it though… Hopefully LO has better luck there… haha

  • soundscene

Most songs rise on the AC chart after their initial runs on other charts like Hot AC, rock and top 40. Unless, that is, the song is made for AC radio (like a Journey or Celine Dion song). Daughtry’s What About Now and Jordin’s One Step at a Time are just now rising on AC and are in the 20s. Crush is actually a little odd in that it rose on AC at the same time and pace as it did on pop. There are still a lot of AC stations that haven’t added it, but the ones that have are playing it about as much as they ever play any current song. I’m a little shocked–I never thought it would do that well on AC, but it looks like it could go top 5 in the format, and possibly even #1 eventually. Depends on whether AC continues the trend.

I suspect that Light On will probably enter the AC charts once it’s more established on Hot AC.

Yes, but you forgot that we’re praying to the spin gods for them to put Crush back into their rotation. lol.

  • Aileen

I hear Crush in Chicago all the time. WTMX has it in high rotation and 102.3 WXLC plays it quite a bit as well. I thought I heard it a few times on B96 and KissFM 103.5, but I don’t listen to those station too often, so I’m not sure what they’re playing right now.

That’s part of it, but I also think LO is just too hard– even for a power ballad– for many AC stations.
