TOML hit 1 million in a DAY. I think those are stats above are monthly streams. Big difference. Light On premiered on AOL as well, and IIRC, hit 1 million after a week or a few days, per some press release.

Sorry I missed that. You're right it is a big difference. The other things I mentioned still possibly apply, imo. I'm aware of what LO did because I'm a huge DC fan. I also know about various suggestions on DCO. :)

Maybe Adam genuinely IS going to explode if they can transform him into the equivalent of Lady GaGa. Because what I want to know is how does she continually defy the "pop sells singles; rock sells albums" rule?

Most of her pop-cousins, such as Katy Perry, only have monster single sales and relatively limited album sales. But, every week Gaga sells singles AND albums like a CHAMP (not to mention the fact that she dominates the charts)....

So who is her album-buying constituency? Hip-hop oriented fans? Club kids? Gay fans?

Anyway, if they get Adam to whatever her base is, he will be set....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Indymuse, maybe my memory is faulty then. I thought Archie only seemed to get equal push once Crush blew up, but maybe I'm mistaken. (Actually, Archie got more buzz then, what with the "Cook Crushed" headlines, and it seemed like the media was sharpening their knives for Cook because they were smelling a Clay/Ruben situation redux with regards to record sales).

Keeping with the 1 million # (since I have no clue how much over it was), Kris received 240,000 less.

Trina, I don't think Kris's streams are too shabby considering three things:

1) NB has been dissed as a song from the start.
2) Just like Adam, DC as a lot of online fans (self included for DC) compared to Kris's.
3) I am thinking that those online fans are more sophisticated than any of Kris's.
**this does not mean Kris's fans are not intelligent, they just don't go online much** (total speculation on my part)

In addition, I do think DC is one of the most popular winners.

Keeping with the 1 million # (since I have no clue how much over it was), Kris received 240,000 less. I could perhaps contribute that 240,000 to the difference in the emotion of the winning moment.

I believe if Kris is properly promoted for his first single, it will do great!

Noctem, I have to respectfully disagree with your recollection of how Cook and Archuleta were treated on iTunes. All of the Idols had their stuff released to iTunes at the same time, on the same terms. It is just that Cook's songs dominated in the 1/2 week in which they were available and visible on iTunes. Archuleta did very well, too, as I recall - I think he had between 6 and 8 songs charting. Others from the top 10 also charted. Granted, they did let Cook have the coronation single to himself. In that sense, they did treat him as the clear winner.

However, in many other respects, they were treated as co-winners, to the chagrin and angst of many a Cook fan at the time. It was felt that as winner, Cook should have had the first single and album to come out, but Archuleta had his come out (if you discount the coronation single, of course) first instead. Even Kristy Lee had stuff out before Cook. There were several other instances of shared appearances that were normally winner-only appearances, and also the Macy's parade going to Archuleta and not Cook.

Eventually this semi-co-winner treatment ended, but for about 9 months I would guess Archuleta was given really extraordinary support and coverage and media for a runner-up. It would not be all that new for this to occur with Glambert and Allen, though unfortunate. I would agree that the degree to which it is happening is much greater, but it is not new.

Even first week sales aside, 19/RCA I believe actively pushed TOML to radio something NB didn't get. There were Mediabase and All Access ads for it and I remember an HDD blurb immediately following the finale that the RCA Top 40 radio team were already starting some big promo for TOML. Now whether this is a sign 19/RCA felt DC was more worthy of that, I don't know. It could also be something as simple of NB being so god awful that they rather Kris establish himself with a real first single

What I thought was interesting though was the AOL Music streams of both songs which relies very little on label promo but rather fans rushing to listen to the studio version and doesn't cost a penny. The other day these stats were posted via Billboard:

AOL MUSIC Total Monthly Stream June 6 09

Top Songs

1. Kris Allen 760,976,
2. David Cook 476947
3.Owl City 267,008
4 Clay Akien 215,796
5. Elliott Yamin 167,363
6. David A. 149,971,
7. David Cook 124,623
8 TAYLOR HICKS 115,189
9 David Archuleta 83,062
10 Kelly Clarkson

This was mentioned in the kickass RCA press release announcing DC's record deal:

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Time Of My Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is blowing up at radio, coming in as the 1 most added at Hot AC and AC radio right out of the box and 2 most added at Top 40 radio, pulling in over 6 million listeners in less than a week without an official launch. Additionally, it was the biggest single premiere on AOLà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s PopEater site, garnering over 1 million streams in 24 hours.

The huge, huge difference in streams could be a matter of popularity coming right off the win, or like mentioned above I wonder how much the difference in the emotion of the winning moment impacted things.

Speaking of popularity here are Blake and Jordin's numbers for their EP (small album) sales two weeks after the finale:

Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s EP - 39,298
Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s EP - 33,093

I'm sure the EPs were cheaper than regular albums but those sales numbers look in the ballpark of where Adam and Kris are for their album sales currently. I'm not sure about single downloads.

And Jordin had very meh numbers for an Idol winner. I just find it odd that even with the publicity Adam really isn't selling at least 2 to 3 times what she did. Kris ditto. Of course, these numbers aren't that important in predicting future sales.

I can't complain about no airplay for No Boundaries.
I can't stand it and I think Kris is lucky radio isn't playing it. Better to start fresh on the radio with original music and not coronation dreck.

Since ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s related to whether there is adequate promotion of the songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦could you elaborate?

Cook was the most popular winner since Carrie, if not Kelly, immediately after he came off the show. Of course, then the damn fool had to come right out and go public about Caldwell and alienate about half of the frenzied females among his base in the process (seriously, you should have witnessed the absolutely epic online meltdown), but I digress....

In general, though, Cook alone was splashed all over Itunes right after the finale and received the bulk of the rest of the afterglow promotion, instead of having to split it 50 - 50 with Archie. He alone released TOML. And the full extent of his landslide victory was proclaimed to the world while Kris's victory, which was anecdotally also reported to be a landslide, was not publically disclosed for some mysterious reason.

Translation #1: Whereas last year Cook was promoted as the sole-winner, this year TPTB are going with the co-winner angle.

Translation #2: The "co-winner" narrative, I expect, will eventually morph into the "true winner" narrative.

Translation #3: Expect to see a plant in front of Kris's head next year.

LOL. I love your breakdown/descriptions, tinawina. MJ should make them part of the FAQ.

Heh. Then she would get spammed from people thinking she wrote it and was subtly dissing their favorites. I couldn't do that to her.

Or Jennifer Hudson

True dat. I forgot Jhud! She's in, but Rueben and Lakisha? Not so much. I wonder if they will ever get another Urban radio star out of Idol? I would love that personally. I don't think they'll ever try with Jordin.

To everyone who responded: Glad y'all liked the post.

Since ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s related to whether there is adequate promotion of the songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦could you elaborate?

dusty, you asked this question a while ago so you may not even see this answer. Of course I said this is a personal theory.

David Cook's winning moment was glorious (maybe moreso to his fans-me included- than non-fans, but probably to the casual viewer as well). This was perhaps the best promotion for TOML, right after the show. TOML was DC's song from that moment on. No one else sang it, or recorded it for release. (compare this to Kris's win and song release)

I don't want to be a debbie downer in any way, I hope that 19 wants success for both Kris and Adam. So I'm just in wait and see mode for the albums.

I don't know if this answers your question. In addition, outside of the finale and having it on itunes, I don't know what kind of promotion either song received.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll go to my grave thinking No Boundaries was written for Danny Gokey and that neither Kris or Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s voices were even considered. Just my very innane and stupid thoughts on the subject.

Tess, OMG when Danny was eliminated my daughter and I looked at each other not believing how upset Kara was. Remember she just kept saying over and over OMG,OMG? Then when the song was revealed we both agreed that it was probably indeed written for Danny. Glad to hear another opinion on this. :shock_tb:
