The Magic Rainbow is fading…? :unsure_tb:

  • jumpstart

Yay for “Light On’ breaking into POP top 20!

  • waffle

I’ve been hearing Jennifer Hudson’s “If This Isn’t Love” quite often on the radio. It’s a wonderful song, and I’ve grown to love it. :)

  • JudyOhio

Nice to see Taylor on that list!

  • Paula

Happy to see Taylor on the list this week. His spins have been increasing today, too.

  • tinawina

Kinda nice to see Taylor there. It would be wonderful to see Melinda next. :)

And, just because it needs to be said, DAMN, Kelly.

What? The mighty Magic Rainbow is conceding his time in the spotlight? Say it ain’t so. I was beginning to worry that thing would still be on the radio when the NEXT winner put out a coronation single.

Light On is doing great on HAC and is still going up. I think it’s just about done on Pop, though.

I want to see how big a bump JHud gets after this weekend!

Yay for the Sligh/Rascal Flats song. Wish him the best.

  • abbysee

Idols everywhere. I special ‘you go boy’ for Taylor. Let’s see how high his song can rise. I too want to see Melinda on some chart.

  • CathyMK

I was beginning to worry that thing would still be on the radio when the NEXT winner put out a coronation single.

AC moves so slowly that TOML may well still be on there somewhere in a few months.

Go, Kelly! Looks like she’ll be Top 10 on Top 40 and HAC before long!

  • leome

Kelly’s song is a tornado. It seems to be rising faster than anything I remember.

  • mac

What’s happening with Archie’s ALTNOY? I don’t see it in Kirsten’s list? Isn’t it supposed to go to HAC Ads this week?

  • sma11ie

I was beginning to worry that thing would still be on the radio when the NEXT winner put out a coronation single.

AC moves so slowly that TOML may well still be on there somewhere in a few months.

Isn’t Kelly’s song still on the radio? Magic Rainbows has exceeded my expectations so many times, I really wouldn’t be surprised if it is still being played in a couple years.

    Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happening with Archieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ALTNOY? I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see it in Kirstenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s list? Isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t it supposed to go to HAC Ads this week?

ALTNOY is in a holding pattern–early-mid-February is when Jive seems to be pushing the song (radio promo just started today; the “debut” of the song is on iCarly on February 15). It’s at #51, in case you’re wondering. And the HAC add date for the song was removed. Unsure as to why but I’m not concerned about it.

  • mac

    Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s at #51, in case youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re wondering.

    Thanks for that info soundscene.

And the HAC add date for the song was removed.

That seems weird. Why would they do that? The song is being played on HAC isn’t it? Kirsten, do you know why a song wouldn’t have an official “Ad”? Don’t all songs have “Ad” dates? Thanks in advance.

  • Jolene

And the HAC add date for the song was removed. Unsure as to why but Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not concerned about it.

I think that song could work well on HAC. Wonder if they simply decided to postpone it and concentrate on HCR first?

Since the song went for adds almost a month ago, I don’t get why they’d wait so long to start promoting it, but hopefully it takes off soon.

  • Kirsten

    Kirsten, do you know why a song wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have an official à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ? Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t all songs have à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ dates? Thanks in advance.

No, not all songs have “Ad” dates and they certainly don’t get them in all formats (unless they are Taylor Swift. I swear, she’s going to show up on the Tropical and Heavy Metal charts any day). ALTNOY did have an add date (BTW add for adding, not ad for advertising) on CHR.

To say that I’m mystified as to what is going on with ALTNOY is an understatement. Jive just seems to keep switching gears. I don’t know what their strategy is, but so far, it’s not working out so great. Jive is usually so organized about these things.

  • yeahyeahsure

I expect Jennifer to have a great increase from this week (reflected at next week’s chart) forward with the Superbowl NA performance and the Grammys.

  • Tess

Just wondering…since I am the least thing from an expert (on anything).

Concerning “A Little Too Not Over You” I wonder if TPTB have decided to pool efforts and to have a very hard hitting campaign during the next few weeks. David is promoting via radio for the song, which invariably leads interview questions about the ICarly episode and the upcoming tour. All the promo for everything in one package. Not a bad marketing strategy.

  • mac

No, not all songs have à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Adà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ dates and they certainly donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get them in all formats

Thanks for the info Kirsten. What determines whether a song gets an “Add” in a certain format? Obviously the artist’s music has to fit the format, but does it cost the label money to set Add dates for their songs?

  • soundscene

To say that Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m mystified as to what is going on with ALTNOY is an understatement. Jive just seems to keep switching gears. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know what their strategy is, but so far, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not working out so great. Jive is usually so organized about these things.

I think Jive may have changed their minds about how fast and when to push ALTNOY–probably close to before or after the add date. I don’t think we have enough information as to whether it’s working out yet or not. If indeed they are pushing back promotion and trying to control the timeline of the song, then the fact that it’s not taking off now wouldn’t mean much.

None of the 11 (12 if you count KIIS) stations he did free concerts for in December have added it except WFLY, which is the smallest one. No station in the top 30 markets have added it. The PDs of 5 huge stations (Jingle Ball stations) gushed about David and ALTNOY in its mediabase ad (one even saying it was one of his favorite songs), and none of them have added it yet. WSTR in Atlanta had it as a “Hot Pick” right after its add date on All Access and they haven’t added it yet. Z100 promoted David’s sold-out NJ show all weekend, giving out tickets, and they haven’t added it. Some (yes, more than one) stations claim to callers that they aren’t “allowed” to play it yet or that the label hasn’t sent the song yet, or that they’re waiting for “promotional” materials–different stations, different callers. I guess there may be some mass conspiracy to fool poor DA fans, but if they were going to lie about the song they would just say, “yeah, we’ll play it,” and then not play it. They do that all the time.

So take that for what it’s worth. But Jive is doing something with the song. Coming off of Crush, I just don’t think this type of stall would be happening if they weren’t trying to control airplay (maybe trying to get it to peak at a certain time, or trying to wait out large airplay songs). I can see how people would be skeptical of its fate if it were stalling in the 30s, but the 50s? That’s not Jive–they’re far better than that. I think it actually takes work to avoid all major market adds, especially coming off of a song that was a hit in a lot of the major markets.

  • Jolene

What you’re saying, Soundscene, is that the reason you think Jive has a game plan in motion is because ALTNOY is doing worse than expected?

I do get some of the logic, but some of it just doesn’t make sense to me – if Jive chose to postpone the push for ALTNOY, why not simply change the add date? That would’ve spared the fans a lot of grief, but more importantly it would have looked better to industry insiders who examine the song’s progression to detemine how well it’s doing. What’s expected from a song before its add and what’s expected a month after adds are two very different things, I would think.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but if I got this right, stations don’t actually need the add date to add a song, it’s just a date set by the label to try and coordinate a unified climb. What’s stopping stations from adding the song now if they want it? It is being played, so obviously Jive isn’t stopping all stations from spinning it. If so – why would they hold off only some stations? Can they even do so after the add date? Why would they want to risk pissing off PDs by withholding a song that’s already being requested?

Crush has been gone from CHR for awhile now, I guess I just don’t see how supposedly stalling ALTNOY is a good plan, and why that would be Jive’s tactic right now. Possibly I’m not seeing the whole picture.

  • soundscene

What youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re saying, Soundscene, is that the reason you think Jive has a game plan in motion is because ALTNOY is doing worse than expected?

No, I didn’t say that at all. I said Jive could be controlling its timeline, either trying to get it to peak at a certain time or trying to get it to take off after certain bigger songs have already taken off. And, if that’s the case, they’ve been controlling it since close to before or after the add date.

if Jive chose to postpone the push for ALTNOY, why not simply change the add date?

If they switched gears right before or right after the add date, they may have simply gone ahead with it to get it started on a few smaller stations–which is exactly what the song is doing.

Whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s expected from a song before its add and whatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s expected a month after adds are two very different things, I would think.

More songs than people seem to realize go at a slower pace at first. And some of those songs wind up as huge hits anyway. If worse comes to worse, Jive can set a second add date (it’s been done before, most awesomely with U Ur Hand by Pink, a #1 song), although if Jive is controlling airplay, then key radio stations may already have a date in mind in which to add the song. If that’s the case, they don’t need a second add date. Radio stations don’t care when a song takes off–if follower stations see Big Daddy stations playing a song they’ll add it, whether the big Daddy station started playing 2 months before the add date or 2 months after the add date.

Someone correct me if Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m wrong, but if I got this right, stations donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t actually need the add date to add a song, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just a date set by the label to try and coordinate a unified climb.

I didn’t say that either, although I do think the add date can sometimes become irrelevant to a song. Crush didn’t need one, neither did Katy’s latest, “Thinking of You.” Pink’s second single from this era, “Sober,” started doing better after the add date, but her first, “So What,” didn’t really need one. Leona’s “I Will Be” needed the add date, but “Better In Time” didn’t start doing amazing right at the add date, but later on. It just depends on the song and its particular circumstances. I never said Jive is controlling radio stations, just that it could be attempting to control the song’s airplay by making deals with radio stations. And it’s all speculation based on various bits of information. We don’t have enough information to say that Jive is definitely doing anything.

It is being played, so obviously Jive isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t stopping all stations from spinning it. If so – why would they hold off only some stations?

Well, some stations are Big Daddy stations. They start playing a song and, more often than not, other bigger markets start playing the song as well. So if you ask the Big Daddy station to hold off, then many others will hold off as well. You can’t even try to control a song’s airplay and not make some sort of deal with a Big Daddy station. Then there are smaller stations that aren’t influential. They do their own thing. They can get a song started, but they’re not going to influence other stations to play the song. So far, ALTNOY has been added to these smaller stations, including my own station, in fact.

Why would they want to risk pissing off PDs by withholding a song thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s already being requested?

Why would PDs be pissed off about that? Regardless of what Jive is or is not doing, major radio stations have been making deals with record labels for years about when to play songs.

Crush has been gone from CHR for awhile now, I guess I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see how supposedly stalling ALTNOY is a good plan, and why that would be Jiveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s tactic right now. Possibly Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not seeing the whole picture.

Well, as I said in my earlier post, if Jive is attempting to control ALTNOY’s timeline, I would think it would be for either one of two reasons: (1) they want ALTNOY to peak at a certain time, and go at a certain pace; or (2) they want bigger songs to get out of the way (February doesn’t really have huge song debuts like January did).

But, again, I never said this was what Jive was doing, just what it could be doing, just based on the little information we have.

    Different topic:

Archie and J Hud arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t in the top 50 on this update.

Judging from the numbers at the bottom of the chart, I bet neither gained anything in the latest update. The last couple weeks I’ve suspected that HDD doesn’t update all albums at the same time because there’s no way that multiple albums can sell absolutely nothing at certain larger vendors (i.e., the ones HDD counts). Twilight is off the list too, and it was #6 last week. Nope, it’s there.

  • weareallinnocent

^^Twilight’s on at #16, fyi. But, I hear ya about the anomoly.

  • soundscene

^^ Ah, yeah, you’re right. I see it now. But yeah, several albums haven’t moved at all.

  • sma11ie

Ooh, this may be the first time I have news to share! Tony from Pulse (and here sometimes?) just shared Soundscan figures from last week:

    14 COOK*DAVID DAVID COOK 24,417 30,586 -20 918,555
    52 ARCHULETA*DAVID DAVID ARCHULETA 9,519 8,855 7 609,571

    94 DAUGHTRY DAUGHTRY 5,775 5,149 12 4,368,515

Great to know that Idol Chatter’s rounded totals are still reliable, since Brian was right on last week (think he said 919K for DC and 610K for DA, right?).

  • gigglesmo3

Thanks for the numbers, sma11ie. I’m curious where the 2k for DC and the 3k for DA came from.

  • Jolene

Great news. 2k closer to Platinum out of nowhere? Yes please. LOL

I was really curious to see the soundscan totals for last week, thanks Tony for the leak and sma11ie for bringing it over!

  • ozarka

Soundscene, thanks for your assessment of what Jive might be doing. It’s very possible that they want ALTNOY’s “unofficial” add date with the Big Daddy stations to coincide with Archie’s ALTNOY performance on Nickelodean which will air on February 15th to kick off his tour. (For those who don’t know, his performance of Crush will air on February 7th during Crush Night, the night of his acting debut on iCarly. There will be an encore showing of that episode on the 15th, where his performance of ALTNOY will be aired.)

BTW, do you suppose that this could also be the reason why Vh1 has not started to play the ALTNOY video or added it to their voting page? More and more, to me, Vh1 appears to be acting like a typical radio station. Isn’t that, in essence, what it is… a TV version of a Top 40 radio station playing only the latest hits, complete with add dates and requests (in the form of their Top 20 Countdown voting) just like any other radio station? But just like any other radio station, they will not play a song unless they’re good and ready to do so, regardless of how often it’s requested.

  • frogcooke

well ALTNOY made an appearance on the AC chart at #40 today…. lol

Looks like DA didn’t make it into the top 50, but Crush is one of the tracks on Radio Disney Jams, haha, so…

Still in the Top 20? Hooray!!! Hope it stays there tomorrow when the Billboard article with the Top 20 comes out. I was totally expecting less this week than a stay in the Top 20 and 18k, so I’m satisfied.

That said – We need at least an add date for the next single soon.

ETA – If HDD is on target, ~63k to Platinum. Awesome.

  • Trina

Eh, maybe it’s just me and I DO get the logic behind lowering your expectations so you aren’t disappointed, but IMO no matter how you slice it a 22% drop is not good. It’s actually more than that since his SS total for last week ended up being 24k.

  • Jolene

Oh, I expected worse because last week was still influenced by the Idol bump. The week prior to the Idol bump DCTR made 19k, so that’s the neighborhood I was looking at, give or take 2-3k.
I’m not looking at percentage drops because this album had unusual circumstances the last few weeks – what goes up (58%) must come down, and it did so over two weeks – 20% last week, 22% this week. If we see a similar drop next week I’ll get worried, because this week there was no bump so there’s no reason for the album to drop further (well, other than LO peaking on CHR).

I’m all about lowering expectations, but my lowered expectations this week were around 16k and top 25…

  • caringgirl

Thats just what I was gonna say Jolene. I think the 58 percent increase he had that one week when most where having declines is why hes had the two dropoffs the last 2 weeks. He had the highest in increase that week, so I expected him to have decreases after that. I guess we will see what happens next week, but I really think he needs a new single out there NOW..

  • SashaB

Yay for staying in the Top 20 for 11 consecutive weeks. Awesome. Go DC!

  • Trina

Considering he went from 40 to 59 on iTunes in a span of like 3 days actually I AM expecting another drop this week. When he starts declining on iTunes it makes a noticeable difference in his overall numbers. The week he got the big AI bump he was hovering around Top 5 on iTunes, then when he started dropping further down into the 20′s the following week his digital numbers went from 7,000 to 2,000. The last few days he’s the lowest he’s been on there in a while. Nothing I can do about it but just pointing out an observation.

That walk to Platinum is probably going to be the longest, slowest ever.

  • Keel

That walk to Platinum is probably going to be the longest, slowest ever.

Seriously? Because I think Jordin Sparks just got there and she had a year’s head start. Now THAT is slow.

  • Jolene

Nothing I can do about it but just pointing out an observation.

Oh, don’t think I disagree. We need a new single, because LO is done. I’m all angsted out (made up word? Oh well) about why RCA hadn’t released the info about the next single yet. I think if they wait much longer, the album sales will suffer, without a doubt.

But – this week, the album is still in the Top 20, which it has been since it came out. It sold around what I expected, so I’m not going to fret about percentage decline, simply because I see it as last week’s gain rather than this week’s loss.

I do think it’s time the album got a 2nd wind, and that can only come from a new single. I hope one is coming.
Or, you know, I’d be happy if instead of a 2nd single we got a press release that Idol is using one of Cook’s songs as the boot song, but I don’t see that happening, so…

That walk to Platinum is probably going to be the longest, slowest ever.

Not really… I think it’s 4-5 weeks away. With 63k needed (let’s assume HDD is right) – 16k per week for 4 weeks or 12.5k per week for 5 weeks. I actually think it can be done in 3 weeks, if we get a slight bump from Disney/GMA/AI/General upward trend of the charts in February.

PS – Jordin still hasn’t sold Platinum, and Cook might actually get there before her at this rate.

Yay for The Boss! And, he’ll have another good week, given the Super Bowl jam. But, back to all things Idol…

Seeing all the *new* appearances in the Top 20 this week, I’m not surprised (or disappointed) with the drop. And, I agree with the others, DCTR is simply resting (deflating) a bit after making the great AI leap. Not to mention, his only *promo* of late has been in third world countries. LOL

No worries here. Go Boss and Cookie!

ETA: FWIW, and not to put words in her mouth (fingertips?) and I can’t read her mind, but I’m thinking Gwen meant it’s going to *seem like* the longest, slowest walk… especially now that it’s already been certified. :-)

Considering his 58% AI bump a few weeks ago, I’m not at all worried about a decrease this week. DC has been in the top 20 since his album came out 11 weeks ago, so I’m a happy camper.

I’ll be even happier when his 2nd (or 3rd depending on who you talk to) single is released.

What is even more awesome is that DCTR has never been out of Top 20 since the album debuted and there were four more new releases this week in Top 20.

HDD does not get all the sales reported to them. I’ve read that 80% of the retailers report to them so I guess that is why you see a change sometimes in real final numbers.

In any case, the album has already been certified as Platinum shipped and that’s after just 10 weeks!!! Yes DC is holding his own. I’m sure he’ll get some more pimping on A.I. since he’s managed by Simon Fuller so that can’t hurt him one bit.

I told hubby tonight that I’m ready to jump on the ‘new single’ bandwagon. Then he pointed out that those who are following closely are probably more ready than anyone and it’s (LO that is) just now making a bigger move on radio…

I did point out that LO may very top out at 20 or so on pop though.

I’m just happy he IS still in the top 20 this week if the numbers hold. This may be a fangirly statement, but DC seems to have staying power…TOML, LO, top 20 for DCTR for 11 weeks. I’m quite happy with these results! :)
