As for AWM, I have to believe that if Jive felt it didn’t make financial sense to release a third single from Kris’ album, they wouldn’t have bothered.

From reading the complaints of Kris fans both here and on Pulse with regard to Jive’s actions regarding AWM, how exactly have they bothered?

    how exactly have they bothered?

They sent the song to radio stations, so at the least, they believe that something could happen with it.

I think most people expected that the song would have to take off based mostly on its own merits, and who knows, maybe it will.

Yeah although I admit to having no clue what Jive is doing with any of its artists right now, to me it makes no sense to release a single if you don’t plan to promote it at all. Jive could have simply closed the book on the KATA era after TT and no one would have been surprised. Disappointed, yes, but not surprised. When Kris announced AWM as a 3rd single, that raised everyone’s expectations again. If Jive refuses to promote AWM, people are going to be far angrier and more frustrated than they would have been if Jive had simply stopped at 2 singles.

At all his concerts on this current tour, Kris is introducing AWM as his current single. And since he talked about a possible video, it seems like the label must have made some noises to him about promoting this single. It would be nice to be a fly on the wall at the Jive and/or 19E offices to find out what’s really going on here.

Even if they are integrating from a legal and operational perspective, there would most likely still be an internal cost accounting function. The music industry could be the exception I guess, but it’s pretty unusual these days for large companies not to allocate budgets and expenses at the product (e.g. label) level.

Wow, you said what I was originally thinking way more clearly than I did. :D

ITA. But what makes sense in Q3′s scenario to me is that they are consolidating the labels themselves, not just having different labels that share some functions. So IF that’s accurate, then I can imagine a scenario where it is all the same company that has different A&R teams (?) under one roof, and the label names are just window dressing. If that is what they are working towards, then it kinda makes sense. So Kris would have had a budget set at the beginning, but now if Jive’s “team” wants to go back and extend his budget to push another song they would have to justify it to the same people that approve budgets for the other “teams”, since it is all really the same entity now. Kind of like an ad agency has different creative teams handling different accounts, but they are not treated as a separate mini-companies though they may have budgets allocated.

What still doesn’t make sense is why they would bother having different labels names anymore, but maybe those are the next to go? Maybe its a hold over from merger agreements or existing contracts or something? All I know is that shrinking things down to fewer entities does make sense since the industry is not generating the kind of profits that would support so many fully separate huge companies anymore. That overhead would have to come down somehow.

As far as Kris… I think Ellie’s scenario makes the most sense, where they may be hoping for a Hey Soul Sister type situation (take off on HAC then cross it over)… that would be the easiest, least expensive place to push the song right now.

Oh, and Lee’s song is doing fine IMO.

Idol fans always complain when things don’t happen quickly enough. Fan complaints don’t necessarily equate to Jive not bothering to do anything regarding this single. I think they know what their plans are for this single better than fans do. As girlygirl said, they could have easily have closed the book on Kris’ album and called it a day. For whatever reason, they decided to release a third single.

Just for comparison, Lee’s 7 Hot AC adds today are the 7th most (right behind the Santana/Daughtry collab)…

14 THE SCRIPT For The First Time
    13 GOO GOO DOLLS Notbroken
    9 SICK PUPPIES Maybe
8 BRUNO MARS Just The Way You Are
    8 MAROON 5 Give A Little More
    8 SANTANA Photograph f/Chris Daughtry
    7 LEE DEWYZE Sweet Serendipity

I think Jive took a chance with another single because LLWD was a hit. I think Idol fans get spoiled because of all the ridiculous amounts of promo these folks used to get after their season. This is the 3rd single for an album that’s stopped selling. This song will sink or swim on its own.

  • luly

Some promo is still needed, but we don’t know how much promo it is getting or will get. The next few weeks will probably tell the story.
