Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Dec 6-12

The Christmas songs continue their march to world domination. Glee itself has contributed 4 songs to the onslaught and all four of them reached a miletsone of some sort this week. First up to bat is the Wham! classic “Last Christmas” reaching top 5 on AC. The next song with its name in lights is the Broadway Christmas ditty “We Need a Little Christmas” from Mame. Nobody seems to notice that the song’s entire premise is that the people in question need Christmas to start early to lift up their spirits and early for them is one week past Thanksgiving . Clearly, a song set in the twenties because one week past Thanksgiving is probably a bit late for most people to start thinking about Christmas these days. Finally, the two newcomers are “Deck the Rooftops” and “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”, proving that radio will play covers if they are covers of Christmas songs. I wonder how long they’ve been waiting for an excuse to jump on the Glee steamroller?

But, believe it or not, it’s not all about Christmas. Carrie has achieved yet another top 5 Country song with “Mama’s Song”. Have any of her singles failed to reach top 5? I can’t think of any. Quite a run for her. Also, laughing in the face of the Christmas route is Jim Brickman. His song featuring Matt Giraud is defying odds and having a healthy increase on AC. “Thank You” has reached top 20.

Details after the jump! (as of 7:56 pm on 12/12/10).

  • emmuzka

If I Had You and Sweet Serendipity are both 25 in HAC?

  • Karen

Thank you for the numbers threads, Kirsten. Both IIHY and SS are listed as #25 on HAC. I think IIHY was 25 last week and is 31 this week.

  • gangreen29

Have any of her singles failed to reach top 5?

Some Hearts. It was her only song not to be released to Country, and it only reached #12 on the AC charts.

  • Q3

Yes, IIHY is #31 this week.

And, yes, Carrie has had an amazing run. 10 #1 Country Songs as 2 #2 Country songs, plus 1 #1 on the BB Hot 100. The only single not to be #1 or #2 on either the Country or Hot 100 was “So Hearts” — and, of course “Mama’s Song” which hasn’t peaked yet. A singer really can’t do much better than that.

  • Kirsten

Thank you for the numbers threads, Kirsten. Both IIHY and SS are listed as #25 on HAC. I think IIHY was 25 last week and is 31 this week.

I’ve fixed it in the post. Thanks for the info, Karen.

I am so happy that Matt’s song with Jim Brickman has reached Top 20 after hovering nearby for three months!

[Kirsten, your AC chart numbers for "Thank You" appear to be from last week? Matt's song was at 28 last week and is 20 this week. And could you please correct your post at the top to say that Matt's song hit Top 20 (rather than Top 30)? ]

The reason the song is doing so well is that they released a Christmas remix with modified lyrics that talk about Christmas, and they have added a bell track to the arrangement. It is a clever move because spins of either the original version or the Christmas remix appear to count as the same song. Apparently this is part of Jim Brickman’s MO since his Top 10 song last year had a Christmas version, too. Because of this change, it is getting new adds and growing rapidly in spins after something like 17 weeks on the chart. It has nearly doubled its spin count in the last 12 days.

I don’t really care for Carrie’s Mama’s song at all. I am not really into country music, but her other songs were good, just didn’t care for this one. I didn’t think it would go this high.

Just shows you what being a juggernaut can do for you. Eventually, your stuff goes way high even when it isn’t very good. Sort of like the later books of blockbuster novelists that are often way crappy and definitely completely unedited. Yet they top the bestseller lists every time.

First time we’ve ever gotten to see this phenomenon with an Idol, though, some I’m kind of liking it in this case, I must say!

I agree with you. But I’m not surprised. Country radio has a huge pecking order and they love Carrie (what’s not to love?) so they will push anything she puts out to the top. It will be very interesting to see if they push it to #1 as usual.

I prefer sassy Carrie better. This song is kind of sickeningly sweet to me, vs. heartwarming. But she sings it well, like everything she does!

So true! Can we say James Patterson, lol!

  • Yvonne13

It’s nice to see Katherine McPhee on the charts. I always thought she was a talented gal who was given crappy music her first time out after Season 5. It’s also good to see Jason Castro. I heard Chris Sligh on a Sirius XM station the other day and he sounded good. I imagine he was singing the song listed above, but I cannot remember the name.

Okay, I don’t know where my brain went last night on that one. Thanks for catching that.

LOL. I read one of his books and it was an editing fail (obviously, from this thread, I know all about failing at editing). A character twice told his family got engaged in that book (the same people were thrilled each time). The entire thing was a train wreck. I couldn’t look away (and was glad I had picked it up from one of those leave one-take one exchanges at a hotel because I would not want to have paid for it).

    Thanks, Kirsten!

I guess we find out this week if the AO orders will count in the debut week Acoustic Live! EP sales. By most accounts, those who ordered the EP + poster got shipping notifications, but those who ordered the physical EP only have not.

That’s what it appears to be. I ordered the poster bundle, and got a notification last week that it will arrive tomorrow. My friends who ordered the same got the notice too, but those who just ordered the album haven’t gotten a notice yet.

Also, Adam’s numbers this week will only tell a partial story because he sold a lot overseas. On itunes and through the website. We won’t have a sense of that number tho unless some on the inside reveals it.

Congrats to Katharine for having two Christmas songs on the AC mediabase chart. Her Christmas video is also doing extremely well.

Seriously WTF is the matter with the Sony online store? You wouldn’t think it would be so hard to ship CDs that were preordered weeks ago!! It does appear that all they shipped was the poster bundles; if you just ordered the cd your order has not been shipped. Kinda ridiculous

  • smeggingnuts

I’m kinda excited to see how well the EP did. It seemed to do a lot better on Amazon and Itunes than I ever thought. I am guessing maybe 20k for the US.

  • larc

It’s a very slow climb, but gaining is always better than losing in radio play. According to IdolChatter, there were 25 other Idol tracks still ahead of SS in total radio spins last week. 8 of those are seasonal songs, though.

Interesting that that NPR writer thought LLWD and WWFM could be classified as “rock”

  • sr4mjc

Interesting that that NPR writer thought LLWD and WWFM could be classified as “rock”

Yeah, I read it as if there is anything left of rock to be played on popular radio, LLWD and WWFM are examples. Which is not bad.

  • smeggingnuts

So my theory on Sony vs the EP. I think that first they used the Remix EP and IIHY (remixed) EP as their guide on how many hardcore fans would buy another EP. And. For some reason couldn’t see the bigger appeal of an acoustic EP over 4 remixes of the same song (stupid). So they looked at that and figured ok maybe 8k ish physical EP sales with some buying digital. Then I think that they also figured that if they were goiing to buy a physical EP they they were going to buy the one with the poster most likely. So I think they didn’t even think they would sell 8k physical CD’s and maybe only pressed half of that.

Now I have no clue how if the physical copies soldout (implying they had a specific number pressed and didn’t sell more than what they had available) how can you not have said CD’s to ship. Which makes me belive they kept selling them after they reached the number they originally pressed. Then said they would be pressing more but there has been some kind of SNAFU with getting more pressed.

I think that those you ordered only the CD w/o poster will be waiting until they make the second pressing with the differant cover.

That’s. My take at least YMMV

  • mmb

Smeggs unless they count all the hard copies ( many if which have not shipped and won’t be counted) I think 20k is way too optimistic. iTunes and amazon digital CD sales just dont generally amount to all that much.

  • sr4mjc

I think that those you ordered only the CD w/o poster will be waiting until they make the second pressing with the differant cover.

I know I bought two of the regular physical copies to give as gifts to the guys I went to the concert with, I hope they get get them shipped soon. I would hope to be in the original ‘pressing’ but there’s nothing I can do about it if it’s not. My card was charged on 11/22, the day they went for order. You’d think they could press a cd in a month.

  • smeggingnuts

You would think wouldn’t you lol

My card hasn’t been charged yet. And it doesn’t look like even the second pressing is in sight. I really am gonna be pissed if I don’t get my CD. I ordered the first hour they went on sale. And I just wanted 1 frikken CD I hate digital :(

Well we know they shipped some of the physical EP’s. So maybe half of the 7k they said were sold before the poster/CD bundle sold out. I know its probably gonna bemore like 13k tops but hey I was wrong about the Grammys maybe I can be right about 20k (not really)

Add in songs that showcase rock-type virtuosity, like Adam Lambert’s “Whataya Want From Me” and Orianthi’s “According To You,” and you get an idea of where the genre might be headed in 2011.

Well I like the nod to Adam’s “virtuosity” here and it makes me think Adam is on the right track with what he wants to do for his next album. I don’t believe Adam is going to give us an album full of WWFMs but a direction he wants to go. He has mentioned more guitars and a more organic sound with more of an emphasis on his voice. I think he said recently that one of the things he has learned this last year is that people really want to hear his voice
,Duh. Anyway, really looking forward to it.

This theory makes sense. I definitely think the bottom line is that RCA/Sony (yet again) underestimated Adam’s selling power, particularly wrt selling outside the fanbase. They assumed only hardcore fans would buy it, but then the EP was reviewed positively in a lot of media outlets, plus it came out right after the unexpected Grammy nomination, so the interest was higher than they had anticipated.

  • Mary102

It’s tricky. While I think Adam should definitely capitalize on his strengths (the voice and his amazing band), I think he’s gotta be really careful about not staying too close to rock on the new album – rock has struggled for awhile, and unless he can fuse it with pop and electronic, it will be a harder sell in mainstream music, imo (unless he goes closer to the WWFM sound, which I know he doesn’t exclusively want).

It was really striking when I went to the JB show in Philly, that Adam was most definitely a ROCK act compared to the POP acts there. IMO, he gave a more mature performance built around strong musicians and vocals, as opposed to cheaper gimmicks like a lot of other pop acts. However, it meant it was a bit of a harder audience sell (at least to a bunch of Top 40 loving teenagers) than, say, the likes of Flo Rida or Bieber. JMO.

Granted, how he plays at JB’s is hardly the end goal for him (dear god, I should hope not!) and I do think he just needs to get more used to playing for bigger crowds like that, and getting the audience interaction without either 1) getting in trouble (it was a YOUNG crowd, after all), and 2) not appearing too cheap and gimmicky.

I am glad Adam has a better idea of what kind of album he wants to make this time. He’s so right, that his fans want to hear the voice, not a lot of instrumentation in the background. Also this time, no orchestras, which can overpower the song and his voice like in Soaked. I know it’s going to be several months before we get a new album, but I can’t wait.

  • http://www.twilightslo.com Mateja

I don’t know, didn’t Adam say that his next album will be more like WWFM and IIHU? Adam is trying to be a TOP 40/CHR artist and TOP 40 isn’t really into guitars and organic sound right now. Getting a lot of radio play is the key, so I hope he gets to work with current producers that will make sure the album is radio friendly.

  • sma11ie

It seems like a lot of Adam’s casual Idol fans who loved his voice but are not into Adam’s current album bought the acoustic. Definitely not just the hardcore fans. The acoustic EP was a GREAT idea– they definitely should’ve printed more hardcopies. It’s really bizarre that there’s a big hold-up with the printing though. Lots of artists sell their CDs from their online store and ship to their customers on time…

I am glad Adam has a better idea of what kind of album he wants to make this time

Oh, I think he had a very good idea what he wanted to do on his first album and I think he accomplished it. The current direction he wants to go now is based on what he has learned since then and the reaction he has gotten from radio and fans reactions at concerts, blogs, etc. I really think Adam pays a lot of attention to the feedback he gets via twitter, blogs and fansites. The trick will be incorporating that with his own artistry. Either way I am looking forward to the next era and I doubt I will be disappointed.

Some fans have received email that their order of just the CD has shipped — not just the poster bundles. And some fans have received both the Poster+CD bundle and the CD alone.

And since many shipped before Saturday, at least some orders will be in this week’s sales. But RCA Ed only revealed that they sold over 7,000 units — he never said how many were sold to US customers so we will probably never know if all or only part were shipped by Saturday. Clearly a lot were sold to Canadians and people in other countries. US could only be 3K or 4K of the AO.com sales.

Yes, he has said he wants to be a Top 40 artist but he certainly doesn’t seem to be abandoning rock completely on the next album — or at least not guitars…

Here is what he said recently in the OZAP Paris interview (translated from French):

Everything worked out and I like everything that I recorded, but yes, that’s about it. I didn’t know, I had never done this before. And I didn’t have much time, I could’t go at it slowly with a single, then an EP, then maybe another single. We didn’t have time to do research to find out what was expected of me. And there is so much publicity that comes with American Idol, it’s almost as if we were working in reverse and that we had to respond to the expectations of the audience, instead of a new artist that is presented to the public for the first time. It’s quite a challenge. But now that the album is released, I can see to what songs the audience is the most receptive, and clearly, “Whataya Want From Me” is the biggest hit of this album, it’s a song that people really like. People like this sound with my voice, so I will explore this avenue in more depth. There will be a lot of guitar, that’s a given.

    Strong week for adds DYWS!

Not optimistic for Crystal’s debut — but since expectations are not high, she will meet many people’s expectations I guess.

Only at #9 on Amazon CD presale list — peaked at #5 for about an hour 12 hours after Leno appearance — but has been moving down ever since that. Thought it might move up again after today’s appearance. But it didn’t.

And it still only at #39 on iTunes and the regular version is Top in the Top #200.

I really thought she had a shot at having a breakout album this year. But looks like maybe 30K could be a stretch.

The only other Idols in the Top 200 iTunes…

#47 Adam Lambert “Acoustic Live!” — seems to have stabilized there for a bit.
#194 David Archuleta “Christmas from the Heart”
    #197 Carrie Underwood “Play On”

If I missed anyone — sorry!

The big shocker on HDD is that Kanye is nowhere to be found in the Top 50 albums. Either a mistake on their part or a major drop in sales. Hmmm…numbers…I think there is where I belong.

Counting unmonitored stations, Kelly is at 22 adds but I think much of the success of the song is due to Jason Aldean. I think he’s a big star in that genre.

  • sr4mjc

Dammit, Kelly should do country now that pop/rock is so out of fashion.

I think it’s a mistake, He sold over 100 tousand units last week, no way he dropped that much in sales for his third week.

    ETA:
DYWS finished the week tied for the song with most adds on country radio with 19.
Some quality adds like the n°6, 12 and 20 market along with the Nashville station (not a big overall market but for country music it must be important).

  • Q3

HDD must not have included Kanye – still selling strong today – so he could not have fallen that much last week.

Jason Aldean is a major country star. Prior to this, he had 12 singles — all but one Top 10 on the country chart, four were #1. He also has 4 hit albums. I think the adds for “Don’t You Wanna Stay” are more about Jason than Kelly.

I think Kelly should just stay pop-rock for her main genre. But I would pick country over Kelly dance-pop-hip hop fusion music. I do not want to hear Kelly doing Ke$ha music or singing Texas Girlz with Snoop Dogg! Noooooooooo!

But the line between Nashville Country music and Pop music and “soft rock” is pretty gray and getting muddier all the time.

Adam is trying to be a TOP 40/CHR artist and TOP 40 isn’t really into guitars and organic sound right now. Getting a lot of radio play is the key, so I hope he gets to work with current producers that will make sure the album is radio friendly.

I don’t know. I think that Bruno Mars and others are bringing more vocal ability into Pop music. Alot of the music sites see actual singing making its way into Pop music more than the autotuned vocal effects.

I think Kelly should just stay pop-rock for her main genre. But I would pick country over Kelly dance-pop-hip hop fusion music. I do not want to hear Kelly doing Ke$ha music or singing Texas Girlz with Snoop Dogg! Noooooooooo!

Kelly had a Katy Perry song as one of her last album’s singles. Granted, it wasn’t my favorite song, but at least it still sounded like her, and not like Ke$sha, or even Katy, really. She doesn’t have to do Texas Girlz with Snoop Dogg to stay current! If you hear her live, you can tell she is really versatile in her style– I could see her going a teeny bit more dancey, and she can definitely do a little bit R&B… though yeah, not really hip hop.

My doorbell just rang and it was the UPS man with my Adam Acoustic and poster. Gorgeous, by the way. The first time I ordered, it was just the EP, then a few minutes later I saw about the poster and reordered the bundle. I didn’t cancel the first order, with just the music, and it hasn’t come yet.

    Kirsten,

I just wanted to say thank you for having the Hedley numbers each week. Being a Canadian myself, I had the chance to see them in concert a couple of times and it’s nice to be able to follow how they’re doing in USA. Perfect is a great song !
