    New CDs

    Due in stores Tuesday:

Paula Abdul, “Greatest Hits: Straight Up!” (Virgin). In case you’re too young to remember when the “American Idol” judge had hits of her own, here are 18 badly dated reasons to prove why Paula is uniquely qualified to serve as a judge of singing talent. Not.

…Paris Bennett, “Princess P” (TVT). “American Idol” Season 5 vocal standout debuts. Chicken Little guests. Why, Paris?

    3 black divas & a beatboxer are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢sà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Top 4

WHOEVER said that “American Idol” is racist is obviously not an avid viewer of the top-rated show. Proof that “AI” is anything but racist is the Top Four choices this year with three black divas dominating the competition and only one white guy.

This is the first time in “American Idol” history that three black singers made it this far with a very big chance that two of them will go head-to-head in the finale, if the Blakes will allow that. Now that Justin Timberlake look-alike Chris Richardson is gone, thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a huge possibility that his votes will go to his best buddy Blake….

‘Idol’ truly golden for Utah boy

It was a big deal for 6-year-old Trevor Ledward’s when his well-worn Chris Daughtry music CD couldn’t be played because it had been scratched.

“It went g-g-g-g-g-g and the music stopped,” Ledward said, pounding his fists on the table as he recalled his fury upon discovering the ruined CD. “I was so upset at my brother for scratching it. He is never going listen to my song again.”

But Trevor, who is a huge fan of the rock star, doesn’t have to worry about that old CD anymore. He has a brand new one, and this one’s even more special to the little blond boy who has had cerebral palsy since birth……

Saving the earth – one Apple at a time

The Green Apple Music & Arts Festival is one of the largest celebrations of Earth Day. GAMAF uses live music to raise environmental awareness and on April 20 and 21, Taylor Hicks, Avishai Cohen and Hiromi’s SonicBloom performed in style. With over 200 shows in over 60 venues in three cities, the festival and its artists are part of an environmentally aware culture.

On Friday, April 20, the Taylor Hick’s show at the Beacon Theater was packed with a crowd made up of more than supporters from American Idol or his soul patrol. With fans ranging from pre-teens to middle-aged men and women, the concert almost sold out. Many young fans donned Hicks’ trademark gray hair for the day and crowds of young girls with silver streaked hair could be seen in the crowd…..

For sailor Stacey, an `Idol’ also-ran, Iraq could be next

Now that “American Idol” voters have kicked U.S. Navy sailor Phil Stacey off the singing competition, is the Pentagon considering sending him to Iraq?

Navy and Pentagon officials weren’t saying last week what is next for Stacey, an active duty petty officer 3rd class and a vocalist with the Navy Band Southeast in Jacksonville, Fla. During the competition, Stacey was temporarily assigned to the Los Angeles recruiting district.

Military officials were clearly pleased they had a certifiable star on active duty. Navy spokesmen said the service is discussing with Stacey his next assignment and whether he will join the other finalists on their tour this summer….

    CBS Wins First Sweeps Week

Three million fewer viewers watched the Big Four broadcast networks during the first week of the May sweeps this year versus last, according to Nielsen Media Research data. Through May 2, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox cumulatively averaged 38.7 million viewers per night, compared to 41.7 million last May. Only ABC’s viewership was up, by 13 percent to 9.8 million viewers. Even with powerhouse American Idol, Fox’s viewers were down 2 percent to 10.6 million. While CBS still drew the most viewers with 11.1 million, both CBS and NBC (with 7 million viewers) were down about 2 million each, with declines of 15 and 22 percent, respectively. Among adults 18-49, ABC was up 3 percent to a 3.4. Fox led the week in the demo with a 4.2, down 9 percent, followed by CBS with a 3.1, down 16 percent, and NBC with a 2.3, down 26 percent.

Stars turn to matchmakers to find love

A Woman Scorned: Kelly Clarkson’s Single ‘Never Again’

…Kelly Clarkson, the most legit thing to come out of the A.I. phenomenon, is back with a new single called à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Never Again.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ This rocky number reveals a fresh side of Clarkson, one which is more anger-ridden, edgy and raw. And I have to say, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s kind of hot.

The song, about a nasty breakup with a boyfriend who’s already moving on with someone else, harkens back to Alanis Morissetteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Oughta Know,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ only thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Would she go down on you in a theater?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ anecdote. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s pretty tame by comparison, but I can see the girl slowly but surely evolving her range and, ultimately, her career.

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face it, they really hit it out of the park on the first season of the proverbial contest with Clarkson, so much so, in fact, they should now call the show Kelly Clarkson Was Here instead of American Idol…

    Hollywood’s British invasion
To get ahead on American television, you have to get a Brit, it seems. Ed Waller talks to some of the UK stars appearing on US prime-time, and to the producers and agents who are booking them in increasing numbers

…But it’s not just in front of the camera that Brits can be found in LA. Behind the scenes, they’re increasingly evident, and the biggest show in the US for several years, American Idol, is produced by two school-chums from Liverpool: Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, formerly at LWT. Brits Simon Fuller, the creator of American Idol, and the ex-BBC drama chief Mal Young, are now developing an EastEnders-style blue-collar soap for Fox. In fact, visit Santa Monica or the Pacific Palisades and you’ll probably hear more British accents than American ones, all from our TV execs now selling their UK experience to Hollywood…

The ‘Idol’ songwriting contest: A radical proposal

American Idol’s songwriting contest has finalists now. You can check them out and vote for your favorite. I would but I refuse to register, plus it’s late on a Friday. I suppose the contest is a good idea. Democratic and s—, and some of the finale songs from past seasons have been notoriously horrible, so why not give an unknown songwriter a shot? But there’s a really obvious alternative. Did it ever occur to anyone at Idol that maybe the people trying out to be pop stars should (blasphemy alert!) come up with a song themselves? You know, like… real musicians?….

Pinching off more of the market

For years the promise of Fox Valley Restaurant’s crab cakes has inspired fans of the golden-fried morsels to make the trek to Shelby County and wait – as long as it takes – for a table at the small Helena eatery.

Now customers can get the same crab cakes elsewhere: the restaurant has started selling the signature items at Western Supermarkets, a Homewood-based chain that has helped other local companies get their specialties into the grocery…

…Fox Valley has sold more than 1,000 crab cakes since Western started carrying them about a month ago, Mangold said. “We’re really pleased with the response,” he said.

It’s a big step for the restaurant, which started out as a meat-and-three and evolved into a nine-time winner of Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence. The move comes at a time when Fox Valley’s profile has been raised to national levels because of a plug by one of its most famous fans – “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks.

    Good morning, Lisa B :)

    3 black divas & a beatboxer are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢sà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Top 4

WHOEVER said that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is racist is obviously not an avid viewer of the top-rated show. Proof that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“AIà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is anything but racist is the Top Four choices this year with three black divas dominating the competition and only one white guy.

I don’t think AI is racist. Far from it. But the “black diva” tag irritates me because it is overused and doesn’t allow for the black female singers on the show to be viewed as individuals. This doesn’t happen to the white contestants. Not the show’s fault. I blame the media and the fans who fall back on this descriptive.

Jordin is actually half-white. She never came across as a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“black divaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to me (neither has Melinda).

I have no problem with Jordin being called Black. Many biracial folks-who are part Black-identify as such. I do agree with you that the diva label as applied to her and Melinda is misplaced.

  • Metta

When Hicks first came on stage, the energy and enthusiasm from the crowd was immediate. Most people were on their feet and remained that way for the entire show.

Good morning everyone! I was happy to see a mention of the Beacon show finally!
I had an interesting day yesterday. I took my son and three friends to a show in the Giants Stadium parking lot called Bamboozle. Tons of bands, tons of fans, tons of trash! Luckily, they had a parents waiting room at the Stadium club. They had a roped off area that only parents and “the talent” could enter. It was a gorgeous day and I read a book and got some sun. The guys got tired after 5 hours and we wound up leaving before any of the Headliners, Jack’s Mannequin, Weird Al and Linkin Park. They had fun, and I got to hang out with Taking Back Sunday (LOL).

    Good morning everyone!

I don’t think AI is racist either, although I do get sick of the “black diva” label. If we’re using “diva” to describe a particular type of singer with a particular type of song choice (without regard to race), I’d say the only one that might fit the bill is LaKisha, because of her penchant to pick big, swelling ballads and iconic songs. Melinda and Jordin, on the other hand, have more diverse styles IMO, with Melinda singing a lot of sultry standards and even some uptempo rock, with Jordin picking a mix of ballads and fun pop songs. So just wanted to chime in with the irritation that the three of them are dismissed as “divas.”

I have to say, I was surprised that Sundance got a deal. Maybe he has a good recording voice but based on the nervousness on stage that he exhibited on idol, I’m not sure how successful he’ll be touring.

  • jpfan

Is there a link that Sundance got a deal with Universal. I’m surprised but I will say that he is one of the very few singers on Idol this year that I remember. I can barely remember people that were voted off 2 weeks ago. Link for the news anyone??

Is there a link that Sundance got a deal with Universal.

Ken Barnes reported it on Idol Chatter.

    Sundance got a deal.

That is one album I won’t be buying.

Chris Sligh has decided to stop blogging for a while because the tweens at Idol Forums made him feel bad. While I agree that some of his words are taken out of context, he shouldn’t have spoken about other contestants motivations for being in the contest (do they want to win or not?). I think we all know that winning is a double edged sword and I imagine so do the contestants, which is why they question winning and probably discussed it in the privacy of each other. But I don’t think anyone would turn down the title and I don’t think anyone left wants their fans to stop rooting for them. Chris basically put doubts in people’s heads which undermines the contestants still in the competition. It isn’t right, IMO.

    Anyway, here’s the link. http://frommymindtoyoureyes.blogspot.com/

MMmm. Interesting. Thanks. Maybe he’s got a great band and some great music lined up. I wasn’t a big fan but I didn’t h8te him as many others here seemed to. I felt kind of sorry for the guy. In terms of other signings: maybe Phil, Chris talks like he has a deal, I guess Blake and Jordin even if they don’t win. I’ll be honest and say I won’t be waiting eagerly for any of the CDs but hope they put out some good music.

  • jersey

I also just read the article about the former idols on Idol Extra and Idol Tonight. Kim Caldwell is putting out an “edgy country rock” album with John Rich (of Big&Rich) that she hopes “will turn some heads and create controversy”. I wonder what she means by that? Political? hmmm…

Oh, I can’t stand him almost as much as I can’t stand Katharine. They both have no qualms about saying not-so-nice things about other contestants and then turning around and pulling the li’l old me act. At least Katharine seems to stand by what she says, though, unlike Chris, who goes through a series of edits and revisions, then blames his audience for being too stupid to get what he’s really saying. I don’t read his blog, but large chunks of it are often quoted on TWoP. I can’t wait to hear about how he gets along with the other contestants during the tour.

Elliott is making big changes in his concert schedule to accomodate AI performance(s). If you’re seeing him in Atlanta or Virginia, I’d check his Myspace or call the venue. I feel sorry for the fans who were flying in to see him but who can say no to Idol. It’s too bad that bringing him back seems to be such a last minute thing for the producers. Is this SOP for them? I think it was an unnecessary comment and has been interpreted to mean certain people don’t want to win (and by certain people, I think given the entry, people are interpreting it to mean “Blake and Chris don’t want to win”). I don’t think that’s fair because it has people questioning the contestants’ motivations and whether one should bother to vote. I think they all want to win but some don’t mind if they lose (it won’t hurt their ego); they may have said otherwise so many weeks ago when Sligh was still there but nobody gets this far (top 4) and actively hopes to lose. Not even Sligh would want to lose if he had made it this far.

IMOà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦The Bee Gees havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t recorded or written too many boring songs, but hey, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m a BIG fan of their music..
Also, do you know they have been around almost 50 years.

LB – I didn’t see it as meaning Chris and Blake, but then again, I really hadn’t paid attention to that article.

I totally agree, I think if Chris had made it as far as Blake he’d be wanting to sing that final song asap :-)

  • LB2

    Oh steve-O, I adore you!!!

Phil and Chris were really good on Regis. I may not like Chris’s singing but he is certainly very endearing and nice.

I just read Griz’s recap of last nite’s Taylor show on the Boogie Board. I hope she brings it over here. She says he sang a very soulful Georgia.

I think the bus that was formerly headed toward MJ, Sarah and the Chicago crew will now be redirected to California. Damn!

Good Morning everyone! Just curious – who do you think it will favor if they sing 2 songs each this week? It seems to be one of the best ways to see who can do well consistently and not just for one performance. Also, if someone tanks on the first song, can they come back and nail the second? Or will they fall apart?

    Morning everyone!

    * Awesome…Paula Abdul is coming out with a Greatest Hits CD…I will be at Worst Buy (oh I mean Best Buy) first thing Tuesday to pick it up. I hope Rush Rush is on it.

    Oh god, I think I may need :help_tb: :smile1_tb:
Look Paula acts with Keanu Reeves:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH_AJ4rDdEY LMAO!!!

    * Great news about Team Plaid getting a mention. CONGRATS Ladies.

    * Personally, I could give a carp less what Chris S. has to say about the idols. Maybe some of them don’t want to win, who knows. Blake could come in 4th and sell millions of CD’s. I mean it has happended before. :wink1_tb:

  • Metta

It seems to be one of the best ways to see who can do well consistently and not just for one performance.

Smiley – Good question! It will show consistency and it will be an opportunity show versatility. They should each do an upbeat number and a slower one.

  • emeralgem

Does anyone know if they are singing two songs this week? They should be, but did Ryan ever mention that fact last week?

  • Little Boy Blue

Got this piece of data from the Boogie board and thought it interesting enough to share :

    * There were 60,000 albums released in 2006.

    * Out of that number ONLY 224 WERE CERTIFIED GOLD ? (less than 1/2 of 1 PERCENT)

    * Out of that number only 108 WERE CERTIFIED PLATINUM? (less than 1/6 of 1 PERCENT)

  • jpfan

Mmm 108 albums released in 2006 went platinum? Why don’t I believe that. What CD released in 2007 has gone platinum and we’re 5 months in? (Norah Jones and ??)

Such a pity that Taylor must be on the low end of that 1/6 of 1%, since he’s such a failure…

  • Little Boy Blue

I want to hear Jordin try I STARTED A JOKE. That will really challenge her range.

Imagine how Jordin sounds singing this :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u27nhIYpIjE

Blake can do TRAGEDY and highlight his beatboxing skills again ( unless of course people start to object ).

    Listen to it here :

Also, of the 4 remaining, Blake is probably the only one who can do justice to Staying Alive and You Should Be Dancing.

  • Little Boy Blue

Lakisha can highlight her upper range again with the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ MASSACHUSETTS

    Listen to it here :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dj2IkLWl1V8

Another song that will highlight her ability to emote is EMOTION :

  • Little Boy Blue

Melinda should do FIRST OF MAY.

    Listen to it here :

    Alternatively, she can try Yvonne Elimanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s version of the Bee Geeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ IF I CANà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢T HAVE YOU :

    jpfan,

Mmm 108 albums released in 2006 went platinum? Why donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t I believe that

    .

Could it be that many of those certified platinum in 2006 were albums that were released years before and only sold their millionth unit in 2006 ? It happens you know…

I mean, seeing how the single DIMYP is still selling, it’s possible that Taylor Hicks’ album will sell it’s 1,000,000th unit in 2009.

Garth Brooks probably went Platinum, as did Fall Out Boy. No they haven’t sold Platinum but they may have shipped it.
As for Chris Sligh, I think he has the freedom to write about whatever he wants. Just because he says some things that aren’t agreeable about your favourites it’s all of a sudden HE’S MEAN! I don’t know. I’m sure we all say worse stuff here than Chris has ever said. So do we really have the right to judge him? I must say for a Christian he is pretty mean.

  • Allen

So is it only Bee Gees this week? No second theme?

I always thought Sligh was an ass and a tool so it has nothing to do with my favorites (plus he happens to love my fave like a best friend so if we go by your logic, I should love him). I only tolerated him and voted for him because steve-o’s attitude towards him is awesomely contagious. I just think he needs to be careful in what he says as his words are either often misconstrued or just plain dumb. And I think he needs to reserve his comments to himself/his feelings and not the other contestants.

I think it’s good that he’s taking time away from the blog.

Taylor slipped some will jump off a cliff…

The music biz seems like conections are important ,like the mangager has a conection w/ clearwater or if you are liked…Elliot and Kat is liked by a station here Taylor not so much..Yes and payola is a facter too w/ many artists…That does factor in a bit .

Yes and having a good cd helps but if the connection is not there and your prcieved negetively it maybe harder…. really am down on Elliot right now I think the two above have helped him a little. Think about Bo.

Well seeing as Christians are supposed to be nice and welcoming to everyone, Do to others what you want done to you kinda thing, talking smack about people just doesn’t fit. I myself don’t believe in religion of any kind, so don’t believe in heaven or hell or any repercussions for my actions. And don’t have any false pretenses of why i’m nice (which, contrary to popular belief, i am sometimes), or why i’m mean.

  • Boulder Soul

    …..Oh wait anon gabbers. Nevermind.

    LOLOL

    Dave is hot.

  • Allen

I know they did Elvis for both songs last year top 4 but they also skipped doing 2 songs each top 5 night since they didn’t really have a top 5 night. It is also kind of interesting that this means they will not have a songs of the 21st century or a billboard charts night this year. I guess the week they had Gwen Stefani on was the closest to a modern pop night but since it ended up being songs that inspired Gwen it didn’t really fit the bill.

And I am not that wild about the Bee Gees (although I will admit that I don’t really remember that many songs by them so maybe I will be surprised) so I wouldn’t have minded a second theme.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Can we drop the religion talk please? I personally don’t feel like playing the “I’m morally superior because Chris is a hypocritical Christian/Athiests are idiots” game today. I’m sure MJ doesn’t, either. I know we’re not supposed to “play mod” but maybe we just ought to nip this one in the bud.

Just because he says some things that arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t agreeable about your favourites ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s all of a sudden HEà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢S MEAN! I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure we all say worse stuff here than Chris has ever said.

First of all, criticizing the things that Chris SAYS is not the same thing as judging HIM.

Second of all, this is the second time you’ve used the “you’re just upset because Chris is talking smack about your favorites” line. I can’t speak for other posters here, but I HAVE no favorites this season. But I do find the way that Chris is danging carrots of “inside information,” posting blind items like “I know who wants to win and who doesn’t,” whining about which contestants didn’t like him, and insulting those who don’t get his supposed musical genius to be appalling. I can’t judge Chris as a person (and would try not to even if I did know him), but there’s nothing wrong with expressing my opinion that his statements are atrocious and rude.

And no, radname, I’ve never run a blog where I’ve posted veiled insults about people who previously considered themselves to be my friends.

  • LB2

    Sligh posts here?

I decided to check out Sligh’s blog to see what the fuss was about. Someone mentioned it here yesterday as well.

I don’t have a problem with what he said about winning. I also don’t see why people are assuming he meant Blake and Chris. Why not Melinda? There was some speculation that she really just wants a broadway gig.

First off, I doubt anyone who auditions for the show thinks they have a great shot of the title when they are in the stadium full of other auditioners. Most probably hope to make it to Hollywood and get some exposure. Once they make top 24, they hope for top 12. Then they hope for top 10 and the tour.

There’s a big difference between actively not wanting to win and being okay with not winning. I am pretty sure that no one who is left is actively not wanting to win.

  • Kirsten

    Sligh posts here?

MJ said he posted once last winter when Taylor’s album came out.

There was also a post one day after the auditions aired that was supposedly from him as well (I don’t know if MJ confirmed that). Back then, he was very popular on this blog because of his original material, his humour and his audition. I don’t think it’s fair to accuse people here of being two-faced based on this.

  • Little Boy Blue

No way Diana (or really anyone) should have to deal with this.

So many Broadway stars among the idol finalists and she had to target Diana — tsk tsk tsk.

I guess the week they had Gwen Stefani on was the closest to a modern pop night

Which brings up the interesting question — what kind of album do we expect these finalists to make that will SELL anyway given that on the show, they are mostly not being asked to perform songs that are current but are IN THE PAST.

If you want someone who is current and can sell today, you would probably choose someone who sings like Robin Thicke for instance. But then given the AI theme format, a Robin-Thicke-like singer probably won’t make it past the top 24.

The eventual winner who can do justice to most of these theme nights wil probably be someone like Melinda… but what do we expect her to record after she wins in order for the album to sell ?

  • Kirsten

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have a problem with what he said about winning.

I was the one who mentioned it yesterday, but I didn’t think it was bad what he said. I believe that most of the contestants are intelligent enough to realize that their are positives and negatives about winning and signing with Clive (and how the press treats you…and lest we forget the dreaded coronation song which many persist in believing that the Idol is completely responsible for).

He didn’t name names, so you can’t say that he outed anybody. And fans for years have speculated about whether or not they REALLY wanted their favourite to win or just do well enough to get a contract with somebody. So, nothing new there.

Hoped that they would be on in the last half, and sure enough they were. Here’s a (really bad because it’s not our best TV) shot of him singing. He did great. I missed Chris’ song, intentionally, because his voice has always grated on my nerves, but he seems very sweet, and he told Kelly & guest host (Howie?) that both he and Phil were pretty sure they were the ones going home.

  • t2

    Des, sigh….thank you.

I’ve been listening to Phil’s version of Missing You recently just to subside the withdrawal.

  • Abilymom

Hey, just coming in to say Abilydad called me from work to tell me something kind of cool.

He was entering his building and walked by the cafeteria. The workers were in there preparing for the day and there was music playing. The song playing was Taylor singing “Levon”. Abilydad said he stopped and listened to make sure it was Taylor and it definitely was.

    Just thought it was neat.

    Have a good day!

  • Desdemona

You’re welcome, t2. I think Phil really started to grow and come into his own the last 3 weeks.

  • Desdemona

    Abilymom ~

Yay! What a neat surprise – hearing Taylor when and where you might least expect it!

Kelly new single is a since you’re been gone part two and this person thinks she is the best thing that came out of AI. An imagination goes a long way. That is all I have to say.

Metta, thanks for commenting on the Diva article. Two things I don’t get, why black women are called divas and why having three black women in the top four prervent AI from being preceived as racist. I thought it was America who was voting.

Also, I keep reading that Taylor cd is a failure by AI standards..What standards.. The last time I check AI did not have any standards. Their standards seems more along the lines of latching unto who is selling the most cds so they can parade the show as creating instant success. That’s not standards that’s hype.. If they had any real standards they would embrace ever success story that came out of the show because it would show how good and far reaching the show really is. Just like everything else on this show, the so called standards that AI have is just an illusion..

Abilymom… isn’t that nice when Taylor’s heard and it’s un-expected ? There’s this dude who owns a bar in my hometown and has been trying to ask me out ( I like him but I don’t like him)… He texted me yesterday to say our bowling alley had Taylor’s CD and he was playing “JTFTW” over and over again… I still don’t want to go out with him but he did get a little more interesting. :rolleyes_tb:

Good point. The voters should get credit for lack of bias.

By winners of idol standards he does appear to be a CD selling failure.

See the standards spoken of were for American Idol winners and their first CD.

From wikipedia, so take it for what its worth.

    1,500,000 1,780,823 1,687,346 5,333,937 667,000

Maybe he will play catch up, maybe he won’t. So saying Taylor’s CD isn’t a failure based on these standards is just delusional.

Sure is!!! Unfortunately Abilydad got to have the surprise, and I had to live vicariously. One of the things I was looking forward to with Taylor post-Idol was hearing his songs on the radio, or in the store or something. Hasn’t happened yet. :(

Last week he took my car to work. He called me to tell me that he listened to the Taylor CD while he was driving and he was really enjoying it and that it really was a good CD.

He didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t name names, so you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t say that he outed anybody. And fans for years have speculated about whether or not they REALLY wanted their favourite to win or just do well enough to get a contract with somebody. So, nothing new there.

I totally agree. Much ado about nada, if you ask me.

On another note, great shout out to Team Plaid! Thanks LisaB and Rolltide. :cool1_tb:

  • MaryS-NJ

I know they did Elvis for both songs last year top 4 but they also skipped doing 2 songs each top 5 night since they didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really have a top 5 night. It is also kind of interesting that this means they will not have a songs of the 21st century or a billboard charts night this year. I guess the week they had Gwen Stefani on was the closest to a modern pop night but since it ended up being songs that inspired Gwen it didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really fit the bill.

It seems this whole season has been had a steady parade of “current” Top 40 artists showing up at odd times. Fergie on Country night? Robin Thicke on Bon Jovi night? And there whats-his-name (not to be confused with “What’s-His-Name” who won American Idol last season) on Latin night.

I speculate that the goal is for the PTB to {{{{telegraph}}}} to “America” that *this* is what sells and what they should look for in an American Idol, since the mentors (except for Gwen and JLo) have been relative old-timers, just like last year.

He didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t name names, so you canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t say that he outed anybody.

I know he didn’t name names but it still doesn’t make it right (to me) to post about other people’s motivations, which have likely changed. Of course, it will probably have zero impact. That’s not what really bothers me; it’s more that if the contestants wanted their private conversations to be known, they would say it for themselves. Just like if Brandon wanted to confirm that there were drugs and bongs and Sanjaya’s mom at his party, he would discuss it himself without Chris alluding to it; Chris may not have confirmed anything but his talking about it lent credence to the story.

I think Sligh is a good musician (I like his album), but he’s dumb for consistently posting “insider” info. The idea of him blogging was cool at first, but he’s had to put his foot in his mouth a lot. I’m glad he’s thinking about stopping.

I’m probably making a big deal out of nothing, so I’ll stop. I just didn’t appreciate some of his posts is all.

Plus, I have finals so anything to distract me from studying will take precedence.

    Some trivia :

Both Clay Aiken and Josh Gracin performed TO LOVE SOMEBODY on the same night when Robin Gibb was guest judge in Season 2.

See here for Clay’s performance :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wC6ljlB9nA0

See here for Josh Gracin’s performance :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7egSETc7x4

Josh’s TO LOVE SOMEBODY performance on the show was his last.

Constantine did NIGHTS ON BROADWAY in Season 4, so there will be a basis for comparison.

    See here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeOo5YeRuvE

  • JustSomeGuy

Thanks for the links….Nights on Broadway especially the 1975 version from Midnight Special is just one of those songs that ages beautifully.(except for Robin’s dancing or lack thereof)
And I agree with Simon and Randy about Constantine’s version.
Cuz Night’s on Broadway is about that chnage in beat two thirds of the way through the song.

  • Metta

Constantine did NIGHTS ON BROADWAY in Season 4, so there will be a basis for comparison.

    See here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PeOo5YeRuvE

Randy and Simon were less than thrilled, but Paula-the great soothsayer–opines that, no matter what, Constantine will “sell lots of records.” I guess that prediction is right up there with her “See you at the finals!” comment to Daughtry on Elvis night.

I will give Constantine props for not turning up his nose at the prospect of working in Vegas.

  • Metta

We can’t leave out Ruben Studdard. The judges, including Robin Gibb, were entranced with his take on this:

    Nights On Broadway
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvOCskztYag

But I agree with JustSomeGuy. The middle part of the song is special–and missing from all these versions. The time constraint is the culprit, I guess.

  • sexygirl

See the standards spoken of were for American Idol winners and their first CD.

    Your point was well taken..

Maybe he will play catch up, maybe he wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t. So saying Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s CD isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t a failure based on these standards is just delusional.

Why does one have to be delusional because I don’ feel AI has any REAL standards. They don’t..Those same numbers you are showing are the same numbers that belong to two winners who AI dismissed as failures before Taylor’s nunbers came out. AI paints with a very broad strokes success and failure of cd sales and it’s done to more benefit themselves than anyone else. If they had any real standards Fantasia who sold almost 2 million and Ruben who sold over two million would not be look upon as failure or be precieved as the benchmark for failure because someone else has sold a couple of hundred thousand more than them. The show has no real standards. It’s all about competition and promoting themselves.

All and all Dave you are the BOMB..

  • griz

I just read Grizà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s recap of last niteà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Taylor show on the Boogie Board. I hope she brings it over here. She says he sang a very soulful Georgia.

    Ask and you shall receive! :) – sorry, it’s a bit long….

OMG à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ what a fantastic concert we got in San Diego – almost a 90 minute show – we got the full treatment! First thing out of Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s mouth was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹what a beautiful eveningà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ! The concert wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sold out, but it was pretty packed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I was surprised at the amount of men in the audience, who à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“reallyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ seemed to be enjoying themselves à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d say the breakdown was 60-40 women to men à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ average age Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d say was about 35 à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ there was plenty of younger people there, btw. Not much glitter à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ almost none, from what I could see à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ a few here and there, but mostly just fans of Taylor à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ no maniacs or anything haha! They had his merchandise set up before the show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ t-shirts, the 3 CDs, refrigerator magnets, keychains, buttons, baseball hats, mugs and a little stuffed bear that had a little shirt that said à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“soul patrolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (cute!). It was doing brisk business before the show.

Anyway, so thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s no opening act à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Taylor enters the stage pretty much at 7:30pm with Gonna Move. The sound mixing was terrific and he looked mahvelous à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he had on a new Otis Redding t-shirt, silver shiny sports coat, tight jeans ;) and sneakers. I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t write down the set list, but it was pretty much in line with what he had been doing in other cities EXCEPT I almost peed in my pants when he sang à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Georgiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ … oh and what a rendition it was. Started nice and slow like on the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“In Your Timeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ CD and then just real soulful with it in the middle. Oh man, that was a joy. He was in perfect singing voice throughout the show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ just awesome! Seemed totally into being there à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t interact TOO much with the audience, but did introduce all the songs and thanked the crowd twice for coming out to see him and yelled Soul Patrol 2x à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he wished everyone à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹good luckà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ at the gaming tables à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he said he wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have much luck tho ;)

During the encore (Taking It to the Streets), he brought out a kid onstage who was watching from the side of the stage to dance along with him à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it prolly was either the drummer’s child or the bass player’s kid à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ he was so cute à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Taylor got him to clap his hands and tap his feet (he musta been about 7 or 8 years old) and then after the song ended, Taylor endearingly rubbed his head like à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“good job!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’that moment was wonderful. The crowd rushed to the edge of the stage during the last song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Runaroundà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and during the encore. He seemed SO pleased to see that (I dunno if that happened at any of the other shows), but he came to the edge of the stage and made eye contact with everyone up front à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ gave a swift high-five run as he moved from stage right to left à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ gave lots of waves goodbye and he just looked so damn happy! Ah man à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ it was a great show!!

We headed back into the casino – the merchandise table was a mob scene à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure Taylor racked up a shit load of money from that alone tonight. BTW, I didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t do so bad either à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ on the way out, I put $20 into a slot and walked away with $120 (hey, it paid for all the stuff I bought!). On the side of the merchandise table was a laptop which was keeping track of items sold, so records are kept. Oh yea, one last thing… I was waiting by the bathrooms for hubby to come out and I overheard one woman say to another, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“that was SUCH an awesome show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ I had never heard of Taylor Hicks before, but man, he was just great!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ I think Taylor wooooed a few new fans tonight ;)

Here is the encore – (shot by someone else)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtUisNRVRnE&eurl=

  • JJ

Griz, I’m glad you had a great time, but you didn’t answer the most important question, did he sweat??????

  • Metta

Griz – Look both ways before crossing the street. Just sayin’.

  • Kirsten

Does anyone know if they are singing two songs this week?

USA Today has a reporter embedded with the Final-4 this week. There will be two songs from the Bee Gee catalog:

“On Saturday, they meet up with mentor Barry Gibb for advice for this weekà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Bee Gees-themed show. They unite as a quartet for one tune, then perform their individual interpretations of two choices each from the Bee Geesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ catalog of nearly 700 songs. Gibb gives them useful advice à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’- speed up, slow down, hit the chorus hard — in getting the most from their songs”

We also get to see a preview for the Fantastic Four. Yawn. Pretty soon AI will start making the contestants perform dressed like NASCAR racers (covered in logos) while holding products like the models on The Price Is Right.

  • griz

JJ – no sweat!!! It’s was nice and cool outside, dang nabbit!! But the tight jeans MORE than made up for it – hubba hubba! ;)

Metta- I already died a few deaths last night – sorry you guys missed Georgia at your shows .. ho hum! la de da…… ;)

Great recap griz. Glad you had fun and you got to hear Georgia (and then you won at the gambling tables…some people have all the luck).

  • sexygirl

Here is my take on the whole Jordin backlash. The judges will stop over-paising her. Some say that the backlash is steming from some who are now threaten by her..Could be. It won’t be the first time..And others say it’s because the judges are over-praising her. That I will agree with. There is this vibe that seems to be no matter how she sings the judges will find something about her to praise. It’s almost in the same vain as with Lakisha. It appears as if no matter what she sings the judges have been coming down on her quite harshly. Regardless of whether it’s justify or not.

I do think Jordin has a nice voice but I will agree that she has had some real clunkers that have been over-looked by the judges. One of them being the inspirational song they had her sing during the Idol gives back week. My thinking was the over-looking of her performance of the song was because they choose her specifically to sing it. I couldn’t see the judges trashing her after choosing her to sing the song over the other singers. Not only that, but she was given the “PIMP” spot that night..

  • JJ

JJ – no sweat!!! Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s was nice and cool outside, dang nabbit!! But the tight jeans MORE than made up for it – hubba hubba! ;)

Tight jeans do not make up for sweat, but they are close. I didn’t get to hear Georgia, but at least he sweated through a tweed jacket.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

do think Jordin has a nice voice but I will agree that she has had some real clunkers that have been over-looked by the judges.

To be fair, so has Blake. I think this season especially there’s a lot of over-praising of nearly everyone because the talent pool is so shallow.

At least Simon was honest enough to say in the media that “this isn’t the best bunch we’ve had”.

Here’s hoping for Jordin to crash and burn on Bee Gees night. I don’t see how she could pull those songs off.

  • JJ

To be fair, so has Blake

Has Blake had any good ones, that he sang?

  • CarieB

Jordin may be getting pimped because she has learned how to fake sympathy.

Oh, and then there’s this wild rumor going around that she might be ONLY 17! :huh_tb:

I wish they would clarify that. Perhaps one of the judges could mention it.

Oh, and then thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s this wild rumor going around that she might be ONLY 17!

See now this is how you know that the season has officially begun. Someone some fans actually hate for no apparent. Unlike Sanjaya, where it was the media who was encouraging us to hate him, Jordin has officially become the one to hate by fans, just like all the past winners. Maybe she will go on and win..At least she is now fits the pattern..

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Has Blake had any good ones, that he sang?

Blake at least has an identity and is innovative. The fact is though, he has a very limited range and is often off-key. He’s really the wrost singer left there.

That’s not to say he didn’t pull off several entertaining performances- which sometimes gets you more votes than a good vocal performance.

But yeah, he might be the worst male singer that’s ever made it to the top 4. It just further cements the fact that this season sucks for talent.

  • andi

I read this site all the time, but have never registered. I did today just to say THANK YOU GRIZ!!!!! I’ve always loved you!! Loved your recap and glad you had such a great time!!

It’s called snark. Try it, you might like it.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

I really like Blakeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s singing. The perfomance skills are an added bonus. People do see/hear things differently.

Liking someone’s voice (tonality) = Opinion

    Range = Fact

    Singing on-key = Fact

What I was saying about Blake’s singing abilities (not his style nor his tone) isn’t my opinion, it’s a fact. He has a limited range and is often off-key. It’s not how I see it, it’s how it is. And I actually enjoy his voice and his style.

  • Metta

Metta, donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know if you have seen this..

In case anyone was still unsure about Jordin’s age, Jon Bon Jovi mentioned it in his interview with Ellen this morning. She’s only 17!!

I like Jordin but I can see where the backlash is coming from with all the pimping from the show and the endless “17″ comments. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out from here. Maybe she’ll be the next one to go if viewers are turned off as much as the internet buzz seems to indicate.

  • JJ

At least she is now fits the pattern..

But the other winners have talent!!!

So are you saying you prefer singers that have a limited range and sing off key?

Actually, off key is a no-no, but a limited range is OK if you know what to do with it. Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett and Dave Matthews have limited ranges, but you don’t notice it because they know how to use their voices to their benefit. Blake does not.

Never heard a singer who had unlimited range….therefore, every singer is limited range, some more limited than others.
The trick is to know your range.
    Blake does.
And on ‘Time of the Season’ for example, he nails it. He hits all the notes in that song, and then some.

Yep, and if I remember correctly it was pointed out several times in the show. Mostly by Randy who is also the one that points out Jordin is only 17 most of the time. Which, its Randy, if you haven’t noticed he has something of tendency to be repetitive.

  • Kirsten

Yes, I think he invented some entirely new notes that never before existed in Westeren Music.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist. I love Blake, but he does have pitch issues. I think he did manage to stay mostly in tune for that performance, though.

  • radname

If he knew his range, he wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be out of tune.

That’s not true. Out of tune has nothing to do with your range. He might struggle for some notes in the upper and lower limits of his range, but you can easily sing songs out of tune that are in your range.

  • Little Boy Blue

While we’re talking about the ages of the contestants — let’s not forget the youngest finalist ever on the show — DIANA DEGARMO ( she was only 16 then ). She’s barely 20 this year and already a Broadway star. In other words, today she isn’t even Carrie Underwood’s age when Carrie won.

People tend to overlook Diana because Fantasia was the overwhelming favorite that year and most people expected a battle of the Black Divas ( Simon’s term ) in the top 3 that season.

I think a lot of performers whose CD sell today don’t really require a lot of vocal talent. Original material is the probably the attraction, but people have to dig it.

BTW, I’m not sure if this counts as original material but a lot of singers, like AKON, are using gimmicks like these to sell themselves :

It’s interesting that Simon thinks the exact opposite of this. Phil is a great singer, an original sounding singer? Hardly. Blake, if not saddled with fluff music and is given a chance to give his input, I think will create a rather interesting record. Will it be groundbreakingly original? Probably not, but I think he’s the one that will surprise after the seasons over.

On Friday, April 20, the Taylor Hick’s show at the Beacon Theater was packed with a crowd made up of more than supporters from American Idol or his soul patrol. With fans ranging from pre-teens to middle-aged men and women, the concert almost sold out. Many young fans donned Hicks’ trademark gray hair for the day and crowds of young girls with silver streaked hair could be seen in the crowd.

When Hicks first came on stage, the energy and enthusiasm from the crowd was immediate. Most people were on their feet and remained that way for the entire show. He not only played the guitar while dancing on stage, but Hicks also did a hip movement dance, which had been rumored to be inspired by Mick Jagger.

Hicks played songs from his new self-titled CD, and maintained his energy throughout the show. Alhough he kept things casual with his laidback attire, his fans believe that he is no ordinary man, and adoring signs were seen all over the venue

Of the 108 albums that were certified platinum by the RIAA in 2006, they included a few “oldies,” like:

First Take by Roberta Flack, released 06-20-69
Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack, released 08-01-73
To Be Continued by Elton John, released 11-06-90
    Power by Ice-T, released 09-13-88
For the Good Times, by Ray Price, released 01-04-86
Off the Deep End, by “Weird Al” Yankovic, released 04-14-92

People who miss a note don’t always manage to hit another note. Often, they manage to land in between the notes producing a sound unpleasent to our ears and discordant with the notes the musicians are playing.

Now I understand. When you know nothing about a subject but still want to argue over it, all facts become opinions. And so vocal range and singing on-key turns into an opinion rather than fact. How postmodern.

Mariah Carey has no range whatsoever and she can’t hit any notes at all. I M O

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I don’t really care for Blake, but that’s only a taste thing. I don’t think he’s a GREAT singer, but he hits all his notes on pitch. He’d be a wonderful and deserving winner. They’d ALL be deserving winners this year, IMO.

“I was around a number of people at the Austin rodeo show who said exactly what you overheard. They had not heard of Taylor, but were amazed at how talented he was and what a great show he put on.”

Isn’t it odd that his shows aren’t boosting his CD sales more? Guess they enjoy the show, but aren’t compelled to buy the CD? Weird.

  • sexygirl

I like Jordin but I can see where the backlash is coming from with all the pimping from the show and the endless à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“17à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ³ comments.

Maybe the continual mentioning of her age is to make up for her not going very far on AI juniors, if the rumour is true. They might be trying to pretend that they are finally willing to back a teen to win the crown. Instead of acknowledging the fact that she did try-out for the spin-off to the show and did not go very far..

  • Kirsten

Not so “Weird”. I imagine that the vast majority of people who attend a concert are already a fan of an artist before they attend and already own the CD. The one exception is for the opening acts on the bill. Naturally, a few people drag along a friend or two (and the odd person wins a ticket), and some people are overhearing them say that they enjoyed the concert. Nothing odd or sinister there.

People tend to overlook Diana because Fantasia was the overwhelming favorite that year and most people expected a battle of the Black Divas ( Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s term ) in the top 3 that season.

I don’t recall Simon ever using the word “black” while mentioning his desire to have Latoya, Jennifer and Fantasia in the top three but I can be wrong.

LBB, I am in your corner when some choose to go after you for whatever silly reason but you really do need to briefly go through the blog to make sure LisaB did not already post some of the articles you wish to post. Guys, all I did was take a look at the tour schedule and compare it to last year’s. No major research was involved. I just noticed there were alot more state fairs, only one show in major cities instead of two, shows in cities I never heard of. Just eyeballing it off the top of my head. Did last year’s tour play in Nampa, ID, Sedalia, MO, N.Little Rock, Ark., Rosemont, IL.? They’re playing major cities as well but only one show. Last year I remember 2 in the big venues.

AI5 tour 2006 played in Rosemont, IL at the Allstate Arena. Not sure about the others.

  • SpenserJ

Wow. NOLA’s hubby brings the cuteness.

Regarding Phil wearing his uniform for appearances…. Phil’s been pretty clear that the Navy is accomodating his run on AI (assigning him to the LA recruiting office, etc.) because they are essentially using this as a positive PR tool. He said this morning on R&K that the Navy hopes to give him the opportunity to go on the tour for the same reason.

So, I’m guessing that wearing the uniform is not necessarily his personal choice. He’s on active duty, performing a service right now that the Navy has sanctioned. So, technically when he’s making appearances, he’s working. I assume he’s wearing the uniform at the request of his commanding officer, and that it’s probably not so much a “request”. Whether he prefers to wear it or not when making appearances, it’s probably not up to him.

Last year I remember 2 in the big venues.

Well, taking a quick look at the Nampa venue, here’s a little info:

Q: What is the seating capacity at the Idaho Center arena?
    A: 180 degree 9700
    270 degree 11400
    360 degree 12657
    In the Round 13067
    Theater 2,500 – 6000

Q: What is the Amphitheater seating capacity:
    A: 11,000

That’s not exactly a tiny venue; it is equal to and in many cases bigger than the venues AI5 played last summer.

  • SpenserJ

Oh, and locally here, this year’s AI tour is playing Tampa in the exact same venue it did last year.

Which can seat up to 21,500 for a concert, but rarely does. Depending on the concert set up – some seats are obscured and some sections are blocked off when they plan on selling fewer tickets. Last year, there were a couple of sections blocked off for which no tickets were available. So, I don’t know what the actual seating capacity of the show was. But, what was available – looked full.

See, this is me trying to be all informative like Nevada, and failing miserably.

  • jersey

It’s playing the same venue here, too. Last I checked though, it was just one night not two. I’m not sure why since I think it sold out both nights last year – Continental Airlines Arena.

  • emeralgem

“I got carried away,” Alleyne said in a public apology last month after a local TV station aired the footage. “I started to dance, as well, but I never thought it was going to be like that. I was shocked. My head was hitting the floor.”

OMG – I gotta vent. I was so excited to hear that Elliott is going to be on the Wed, May 16th results show – and while I was sorry for the VA concert being postponed – excited that he was asked to sing for AI. However, looking at his myspace, I noticed that my concert on Tuesday, May 15th was no longer listed so I went to THELOFTATL site and sure enough- the concert has been postponed – but there isn’t any date listed for the concert. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA – I am so bummed. :sad_tb: (I actually screamed when I found this out and had to explain to my hubby.)

After all, Lu and all her co-Virginians have other concerts in their area (and I might say – all the time) but this was my only chance to see the man. Sob. Super bummed. BTW – MJ – you can put his appearance on the results show on the idol appearance concert. It is a true happening. I imagine he has to rehearse on Tuesday – but boy – what a sad day that will be for me…. (Perhaps AI was afraid I’d miss the Tue night show to go see him… which of course I would, gladly!)

Oh – also – I was in a Captain D’s restaurant on Saturday and my hubby and I were playing our usual – what song is that and who did it – when lo and behold – “Just to Feel That Way” came on and I nearly shouted TAYLOR!

If the girl had no idea that it was going to happen, I can see a lawsuit being filed by the parents. If it were my child, and she were really humiliated by this (as she apparently was), I’d sue for negligent infliction of emotional distress, or maybe even intentionanl infliction of emotional distress. It’s nice that he did it to other people, but when you’re pulling random people out of the audience and tricking them into a potentially humiliating experience, with no idea how they’ll react, you’re asking to get a lawsuit filed against your stupid a$$.

Here’s an interesting perspective on the music industry; it’s quite long, but worth the effort.

    http://www.freepress.net/news/22348

Most records, in fact, produce good money for corporations and little or none for the musicians. This is because the recording studios and engineers, art departments, advertising departments, A&R departments, legal departments, limo services, tour agencies, caterers, and distribution networks that swallow up the sales revenue for all but the big hits are owned by these very same corporations. Records that sell tens of thousands donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“break evenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ not because no money comes in, but because all the money goes to keeping the corporation in the black. Revenue for the corporation starts coming in with the first CD sold, royalties for artists donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t kick in until every part of the bloated corporate beast is adequately fed.

    Griz,
Thanks for the review. So good to hear of the diversity of the crowd, and how the stage got rushed during the Runaround part of the encore. How thrilling it must have been for Taylor to get that spontaneous surge. I would love to have seen that (and heard Georgia). And…that Otis t-shirt…I usually don’t get fangirly, but I hope the next time I catch a show, he’s attired in just jeans and a t-shirt (with the cool tennies of course), after having pumped iron for a span to build up those biceps a little. Now that’s a visual. :wink1_tb:

Very interesting that so many older artists are just reaching gold and platinum status (that outta tell TPTB something). Thanks for the info, Nevada.

would Taylor have been a flowerchild in 1967?

I’m sure he WAS one in 1967.

In regards to Blake and his talent….
I think the guy is probably one of the most creative people to be on Idol. Maybe there were other great songwriters that have been on the show but, IMO, Blake is the only one with enough balls to actually put himself out there and change songs for the better. Also, from what I’ve heard of the two Chris’ and some of Melinda’s OG stuff this season is by far the best when it comes to original material. I think all of them could possibly have the opportunity to really showcase themselves if they make an album. I think aside from possibly Daughtry no other Idol contestant/winner has had impressive enough songwriting skills to be featured on their album with less than a small writing credit here and there for writing lyrics and some melody or something.
I’m kind of crossing my fingers that Blake comes in any place but number one because his freedom might be stifled. But then again, I think Clive knows what happens when an artist performs material that doesn’t show a reflection of who they really are (ie Bo, Taylor, Kat)
Maybe they will be smarter this time and actually trust people.

  • Metta

I think aside from possibly Daughtry no other Idol contestant/winner has had impressive enough songwriting skills to be featured on their album with less than a small writing credit here and there for writing lyrics and some melody or something.

Your statement is inaccurate. Taylor exclusively wrote two of the songs on his cd–three on the Walmart version.

I also disagree that songwriting talent is the deciding factor re. what Clive and company allow on these cds. I think radio-ready/top 40 friendly songs would trump superior compositions.

  • pj

I agree that Blake is probably one of the most creative to hit the Idol stage. I’ve only been watching since season 4, however. Not just in his arrangements, but also in his song selections (of course, anyone who would take on The Cure and do it well automatically gets points with me). He seems to have a knack at picking the right song for his voice/style. I think the hardest two themes for him were probably country night and IGB night, but he still pulled them off easily.

Daughtry got a lot of help writing his album. I think “Home” is completely original, though. I took a listen to his Absent Element stuff and didn’t really dig it. Then again, it’s not my style of rock.

Where can I listen to Melinda’s OG stuff?

My favorite Idol album is still JPL’s. I’m so glad MJ pimped it. I would never have bought it otherwise. I just love it.

I don’t think he knows it at either. Otherwise he would have figured it out already. It really seems like Clive labors under the delusion that he can turn anyone into a pop star. Personally, I think it’s just ego.

  • sexygirl

I think aside from possibly Daughtry no other Idol contestant/winner has had impressive enough songwriting skills to be featured on their album with less than a small writing credit here and there for writing lyrics and some melody or something.

    Are you for real…

With the exception of Carrie, I agree with this. I think Bo Bice is exhibit A. By the way, does anyone have info on his 2nd cd? Is it in the works? Completed?

  • pj

Bo’s album really disappointed. :( I still love Bo and hope he can put something out that better reflects him the second time around.

ETA: I knew nothing of the Idol machinations when I watched AI4 and I was happy when Clive told Bo they would make a very special record together. Special, indeed!

I totally agree. The guy has oodles of talent.

  • sexygirl

I agree that Blake is probably one of the most creative to hit the Idol stage.

So beatboxing is creative. Blake creative style only stand out because of his competition which helps him a lot. But if he was part of Season 3-5, I don’t think he would appear as creative. I think his timing was just right.. I think as more and more people start bring their own unique style to the AI stage, they will be separated and considered creative. To me that is what AI should be all about. IMO, Season one and two was mostly straightfoward singing. Season 3-5 the more creative and unique singers was able to step out and sell their talent and grab the tv and in house audience’s attention.

I don’t personally think Blake is anymore creative than Fantasia was sitting on the floor singing Summertime. Bo singing one of his songs in acapella or Taylor’s dancing style. These were things that not only set these guys apart but stuck with the audience. I have to say, there isn’t anything Blake has done that has really wowed me but I did really like his performance last week. So maybe when it is all said and done, I can add that performance to the other creative moves of previous contestants that set them apart.

Even though I’m not really a Blake fan, I do think he’s creative. I have a lot of respect for people who are innately musical and can arrange notes in different fashions, because I sure as hell can’t do it. (Full disclosure: I can sing. I can sing very well, actually. But I’m certainly no musician. Give me a piece and I’ll sing the notes, and I’ll connect and put emotion into it, but I lack the insight to be creative and put a different “spin” on a song the way Blake can.) I may not LIKE all of his arrangements, but he is obviously tremendously talented.

  • sexygirl

I liked Bo’s cd.. I guess I just listened and did not have any preceived views of what he should have sounded like. I personally think there is this weird battle going on between the AI some fans and Clive inwhich I don’t really get. Maybe someone could explain it to me because I personally don’t get it.

On the topic of Akon..What he did in Trinidad is quite normal. I’m from the Carribeans, trust me, provocative dancing is as normal as brushing one’s teeth. But doing it with a underage girl isn’t..Also, being mindful that he isn’t a face in the crowd should have been a thought going through his mind when he choose to behave like that. The girl would not have been suing the guy next door if he had done that to her and video-taped it.

  • sexygirl

I do believe Blake is creative and it stands out because his peers aren’t as creative. I just don’t think he is anymore creative than those before him. He is proving just like the previous Idols who brought their creative styles to the stage before him that singing is more than just standing infront of a microphone. I personally don’t think he was/is the best singer but his creative style sells him.

sarahinwv: I would love to see Keanu in (or out ) of uniform !!

Reeves? He was in it on “A Walk In The Clouds.”

ken barnes has the following on his blog:

    Idols work out their songs
Bill Keveney has a marvelously observed fly-on-the-wall story on the four remaining Idols, watching as they go through the rigors of song selection (and rejection) and rehearsal (plus a little time out for shopping and Ford commercial filming). Spoiler warning: it details the songs each Idol will sing Tuesday night.

but i can’t see any link to more info. is this just a tease to an article to appear in tomorrow’s paper?

    Hmm. Is that so?

Here’s a list of Taylor’s original material that he completely wrote himself. I’m sure there’s more, but here’s a start:

    In Your Time
    Somehow
    Soul Thing
    Son Of A Carpenter
    The Deal
    The Fall
    My Friend
    Hell Of A Day
    Heart and Soul
    Hold On To Your Love
    West Texas Sky
    Hello Lonely (never recorded)
    Limin’ (never recorded)

  • hapi

is there a vid of phil-chris from the Regis Kelly show today??

  • neonorange

Griz, you forgot Limin’ it one of my favorite fun TH songs.

    Here’s the USA Today article.

    Warning – contains spoilers.

Right neoorange! I forgot Limin’! I love that song – I forgot all about that one! I fixed my list.

  • neonorange

    RE: USA Today
I am surprised Blake kept the black hair. This should be an interesting week.

  • neonorange

Griz, it’s my theme song right now that finals are over :clap_tb:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“We’re Limin, In the Afternoon,
    Can’t get away too soon
    What else can I say
All you have to do, is dance the blues awayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I don’t plan on doing anything for a couple of weeks!

I love that song Jordin is doing: Woman In Love. But can she pull it off – the emotions required – seeing as she’s only seventeen and has probably never really been in love? Of course, she was amazing on I Who Have Nothing and that was just tragic.

  • beesims

If the USA Today spoilers are correct, I am very psyched to see Blake do this song. It is an odd choice since it came out in 2001 and isn’t one of their better known hits. It has these 3 very distinct parts so it will be interesting to see the edited for idol version.

Star, thanks for that link. Very interesting. Great songs for these great contestants. I ‘m really excited about the show. I think I’m going to enjoy it a lot. :)

And they’re doing You Really Got Me, eh? Sanjaya lives. Heh.

I never knew Taylor wrote Limin’! You learn something new every day.

Here is what I know as far as an update on Bo. As of this week he has 20 cities slated on his new accoustic tour. He will kickoff this Friday in Rochester, NY. Bo stated in his last Stickam chat that he is working on his second cd and has approximately 30 songs he is mulling over. He seems to be leaning more to the Southern Rock side of things rather that what Clive dealt him with The Real Thing. :smile2_ee:

  • Carla D

I read the spoilers and I’m a bit disappointed. Blake’s choice of “This is Where I Came In” is interesting but he always seems to find a song that works for him. I’m not so sure about his other choice. I’m a fan of the really early BeeGees and not that crazy about the disco era or their most recent stuff.

I assumed someone would sing “Run to Me”, “To Love Somebody” and “Run to Me” (3 of my favs) as these choices are predictable. However, I would have loved to have heard someone sing “Love So Right”, “I’ve Gotta Get a Message to You”, “Words”, or “I Started a Joke” (too bad Sanjaya is gone – this song would have worked perfectly for him!).

I’ve been a big fan of the BeeGees since my mom took me to see them in 1976 (I was 8). I took the death of Andy so hard – I think I wore black everyday for a year! LOL Andy was my first ever crush. It’s amazing how my musical tastes have changed over the years. However, I will never part with my BeeGees album collection, no matter how much I’m ridiculed by my boyfriend.

Bon Jovi last week…..Barry Gibb this week. I love it!

  • WVIdolFan

I adore Bo Bice. I would like to give Clive Davis a set of new teeth for what he did to Bo. I guess Bo had to give up the bus and his band when his contract was dropped. I do hope Nashville picks him up and lets him do this thing.

  • WVIdolFan

Good article by USA Today. The songs Blake is singing are two of my absolute BeeGee favs. The one Jordin and Barry are both singing IS my favorite. I dont know the song Kiki is singing. I have 3 of their cds but its not on either of those. Im glad Blake isnt doing Jive Talkin. Thats one of the few songs of theirs I never liked.

sexygirl, I’m sorry; but this was not “provacative dancing.”

  • Sagie

Wow! I hadn’t seen the video and just had assumed it was “just” sexy dancing… That is wayy overboard and violent looking the way he is tossing her about.
