    In Touch With Reality
Nonscripted’s diversity outshines that of scripted fare

Music snobs may be miffed that 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar has stayed afloat on Fox’s American Idol. But his continued presence on the program underscores a profound truth about the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ and other non-scripted programs this season. From Idol to CBS’ Survivor to The CW’s America’s Next Top Model, reality offers viewers a level of onscreen diversity that remains unmatched on the scripted side…..

Taylor Hicks in concert: What would the ‘Idol’ judges say?
The “American Idol” champ played Mystic Lake, singing everything from his own soul songs to Supertramp

“American Idol” puts singers under a microscope. After offering only one song, they are diced and sliced by Simon Cowell, given a reality check by Randy Jackson and propped up by Paula Abdul. But that version of reality TV is such an artificial situation……..

Whatever happened to… the female boxer who sang on ‘American Idol’?

“Look out for me in 2007,” Franchon Crews warns those who thought her spirit would be broken by not making the “American Idol” cut in 2005.

The singer/boxer is finishing up a CD of songs she has written, she said, and intends to defend her Golden Gloves national title in Colorado in June…

…And she intends to try out for “American Idol” again this summer.

Some 34 million people watched Crews belt out a rendition of Alicia Keys’ “A Woman’s Worth,” on the show two years ago. The program also featured video of the then 17-year-old training in the ring…

    My valentine, Melinda

…This is why one Melinda Doolittle, 29, of Brentwood, Tenn., is the single most electrifying performer on “American Idol” in six seasons.

That Doolittle has already won “American Idol” is a foregone conclusion. Everyone knows this, or everyone should know this, or everyone will know this in just about two months’ time.

But here’s the more remarkable thing to consider. Doolittle is, indeed, the potential Great One. She is not merely the finest singer from this season – there is absolutely no point in debating this – but the finest singer on “Idol” ever…

Music stars go dialing for dollars

    …She’ll take Blake

Last year’s “American Idol” runner-up, Katharine McPhee, tells “Extra” (11 a.m. weekdays, WDIV-TV Local 4) her favorite current “Idol” contestant is Blake Lewis.

Why? Said McPhee: “I like Blake, you know. He’s cool! … I don’t know if Blake will take it, but I think a guy-girl finale is the best.”

Want to know what someone’s really, really like? Check their playlist.

…With American Idol on millions of minds, Underwood’s playlist is especially enlightening. The former Idol champ and supposed Nashville savior stuffs her playlist with hard rock. My Chemical Romance, 30 Seconds to Mars, Our Lady Peace.

“I LOVE the Rolling Stones,” she writes about Paint It Black. “In fact, if anyone ever sees me driving around Nashville with the top down, there is no doubt that they will most likely get a dose of the Stones’ Forty Licks album.” Could Lil’ Miss Twang be more Joan Jett than Loretta Lynn?…

    What the ….

Scratched my head just a little at the item from TMZ.com that Flint “American Idol” favorite Lakisha Jones has befriended maligned male singer Sanjaya Malakar.

Talk about an odd couple, but from the reports, it seems Jones has encouraged and helped buoy the spirits of the teen who wore out his welcome shortly after the round of 24 was announced weeks ago.

After the initial shock, Jones’ befriending Malakar seems really maternal and admirable since you’ve got to feel for a kid who knows he’s still singing on borrowed time.

Hard to imagine robo-diva Melinda Doolittle doing something so humane and selfless.

Of course, after this goes to print, she’ll probably rescue a family from a burning house just to send some bad karma my way and make me look silly.

That’s just the way these things work.

Media Mix: Web becomes source à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ not outlet à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ for news

…And the ease with which even seamy Web material makes it into mainstream media was illustrated when compromising images of American Idol contestant Antonella Barba surfaced on the Web and were subsequently covered by print and broadcast media.

Whether the photos, posted anonymously, led to Idol voters booting Barba is unclear, but “I’m sure it didn’t help in her attempts to win votes,” says Tom Rosenstiel of the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

On the Web, “you essentially have a public wall where anybody can put up a billboard and say anything,” he says. “And if the wall attracts a crowd, mainstream media write about it.”

That presents challenges for the media, he says: “If something is out there and having an impact, you probably have a responsibility to report it. But you have no less a responsibility to tell me if it’s believable or not.”…

    Support Acts of Goodwill Week

…One recent program jumping onto the charity bandwagon is American Idol. Known as “Idol Gives Back,” the event will take place on the shows of April 24 and 25. Each time a viewer calls in to vote for his or her favorite contestant, sponsors will make a donation to charities committed to alleviating poverty in both America and Africa. Money will go toward Save the Children – a charity that runs programs for disadvantaged children in America – and to charities like UNICEF, The Global Fund to fight AIDS and Malaria No More – which fight diseases prevalent in Africa and provide educational opportunities to children there. So it looks like under all the stinging insults and apparent snobbery of Simon Cowell, there is a bleeding heart that cares about more than making fun of people…

    ‘Worst’ things first

LETTERS — ALL TV gets letters — and this week’s mailbag includes more “American Idol” complaining, Anne Heche’s whereabouts, CBS’ Sunday night problem and more.

…Alan says: Sigh. … People, people, people, didn’t we just do away with the Vote For the Worst issue once and for all back in the semifinals? Remember, only three weeks ago, the Web site was backing Antonella and Sundance, and did either of them make it to the finals? No. They didn’t have enough juice to get Sundance past Sanjaya, and they didn’t have enough to get Anto nella past Stephanie or Haley, even with the added curiosity factor about those pictures, so why should we believe they had anything to do with Sanjaya outlasting Brandon and Stephanie?…

Hicks may have moved on, but he knows where he came from

…As for Redding, he’s an influence on Hicks’ performing. And he jokes that Simon Cowell might have understood his appeal if he’d understood the Redding influence.

“If Simon knows who Otis Redding is,” says Hicks. “I don’t think he was born in this country, so I don’t know if he knows.”

Despite the jokes, Hicks is positive about Cowell.

“Simon’s a great guy. He’s in the record business, he’s into selling records.

    Men make a mane point

American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar is a huge hit, primarily for his hair.

He began with the flip, moved on to straight, sleek and sexy hair, and now he’s sporting a fringe. American Idol hopeful Sanjaya Malakar, the only Indian to have reached the final rounds of the hugely contested singing competition held in the US, is known more for his hair than his vocals. Good morning, Lisa B. :)

I just read this at yesterday’s thread.

Sarah: What will Blake sing on Tuesday? Here are the clues his friend from Common Market has posted on the AI board:

Apparently, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a song that will make the ladies swoon and make each one feel like heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s speaking directly to them. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s NOT the Backstreet Boys (thank gawd). It was first performed in the late 80à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, but redone in the 90à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s, and has actually been redone by two different groups/singers.

My first guess is Baby Can I Hold You by Tracy Chapman and redone by Boyzone in 1998 or 1999. :)

    Sanjaya Malakar, ruining American Idol

…Maybe he could call in Tyra Banks’ hair and make-up artist so he can perform in drag. They could tease out his hair and add some fake eye lashes to go along with those bushy brows. Or maybe he could wear a single white glove and perform only Michael Jackson songs from here on out!

This week the Idols will be joined by Gwen Stefani as their mentor. The Top 10 contestants will be performing the pop song of their choice.

    Enjoying their worst
Suburban Web site says ‘Idol’ is ‘giant karaoke contest’

A scrappy little Web site run from suburban Chicago is giving “American Idol” and fans fits. It’s the second most popular “Idol”-related site — right behind “Idol’s” official site. And it’s inspiring death threats and promises of lawsuits against its owner.

The David and Goliath goal of VoteForTheWorst.com is to convince people to vote for the worst singer every week.

It’s getting noticed. Last week, site owner Dave Della Terza, 24, chatted on Howard Stern’s show. The site served as fodder for morning TV chatter. On “Letterman,” Paula Abdul called the site “just terrible.” …

…”American Idol” contestant Antonella Barba knows all about it. Salacious photos of her, which she said were meant for her boyfriend’s eyes only, appeared online, sparked a controversy and perhaps expedited her being voted off the show earlier this month.

But it’s not just the famous and infamous who are judged by material on the Internet. Your online reputation is up for examination, too, by potential dates, your neighbors, co-workers, bosses, the college admissions office — anybody who takes a moment to type your name into Google…

He’s getting a leg up on all his worries

We all have so much occupying our minds today. There’s a war that is dividing the country, earthquakes and natural disasters around the world, and the fate of our next American Idol in the hands of the evil and unpredictable Simon Cowell. To add to this list, we have more local worries of potential floods, a snow-filled spring, and lawmakers deciding whether or not to outlaw practicing our musical instruments while we drive to work. It has gotten to the point that most of us have started to worry about what to worry about first.

Well I’m here to tell you some very good news. When I picked up the Sunday paper this morning to determine which concern to invest most of my energy, a little flyer fell out advertising a product that is certain to alleviate a large percentage of our daily anxiety. The ad was for “Thin Thighs,” a topically applied cream that will, “REDUCE YOUR THIGHS ONE AND A HALF INCHES IN JUST THREE WEEKS!”…

Wow – you people wake up early. Thanks for the articles.

I just found some more info. on Blake’s song (not sure if it is true) – someone on IDF seems to know what it is (I don’t visit there – too scary. I found this info. elsewhere) and has all but confirmed it is Love Song by The Cure.

I say good choice if it’s true.

LB2 — man, I LOVE The Cure!! It reminds me of my college days. :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Cure. It too reminds me of my college days. I hope Blake sings that but isn’t it an 80′s song? What is this week’s theme again? Is it just general “pop” songs?

hs, squishy – I am also a fan of The Cure. The song makes sense because I have read that Blake is a huge fan of the Cure and 311 did a remake of that song (though it’s not as good). I’m going to take it as a rumor for now though.

I also read that Melinda is NOT doing a ballad or showtune this week.

The theme is pop so anything will fit really.

Blake’s got a Sting vibe to him, so that might be a good idea, too.

I think Blake should do something totally unexpected. Something no one would expect on AI. My first choice was Lose Yourself by Eminem. However, the chances of that happening are slim to none. This one probably won’t happen either, but how about Where its At by Beck.

Yup, I could see Blake doing either. He’s going to get a contract regardless of how he places on Idol.

Taylor tagged Rough God Go Riding (I was flabbergasted by the headlines. People who live in glass houses throwing stones) & Did Ye Get Healed by Van….Also, in Heaven Knows he threw in Ain’t That Peculiar by Marvin Gaye..And in WILMH he did The Road by Jackson Browne

Blake would be amazing on Lovesong. It totally fits his voice. And if that post is right, and he makes us all feel like he’s singing to us, then I’m in trouble. I’ve already watched last week’s performance about a bazillion times.

An iPod shouldn’t take 20 minutes to sync. Gah. It’s always something.

    Oh, and good morning. ;-)

  • LB2

I love Beck. Where It’s At is a great choice for Blake; it’s the type of music I see Blake making in the future. But it may be a little too much for the show. Beck makes odder, more experimental music than is typically featured on the show. It may get lost of some of the audience (tha part that clings to the idea that this is simply a vocal contest) and definitely one of the judges, who will say “I didn’t get it.”

  • t2

And the first sign of the apocalypse is upon us…Ashley Hartman is putting together an album.

LisaB, I love you, but that scares me.

Does anyone else remember how awful that was? It puts to shame even the worst of the worst this year. Didn’t she sing Angel of the Morning (blocked it out..of…mind) — oh is was so awfully bad…

  • jpfan

Alot of people on Team Blake. IMO the voice is not that exceptional (Sligh is better) but part of the cool vibe. Blake get points for being different. I’m not predicting any signings this early in the game. Blake’s voice is a tad generic and he’ll need killer songs. I don’t see any no brain signers like Daughtry and Pickler in this years group yet. Blake may be the kind of guy who can’t sell CDs unless you see him perform.

  • Lisa B

The Album, a Commodity in Disfavor

…One of the biggest reasons for the shift, analysts say, is that consumers à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ empowered to cherry-pick à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ are forgoing album purchases after years of paying for complete CDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s with too few songs they like. There are still cases where full albums succeed à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ the Red Hot Chili Peppersà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ double-CD à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stadium Arcadium,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ with a weighty 28 tracks, has sold almost two million copies. But the overall pie is shrinking.

In some ways, the current climate recalls the 1950s and to some extent, the 60s, when many popular acts sold more singles than albums. It took greatly influential works like The Beatlesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sgt. Pepperà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Lonely Hearts Club Bandà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and the Beach Boysà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Pet Soundsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ to turn the album into pop musicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s medium of choice.

But the music industryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cost structure is far higher than it was when Bob Dylan picked up an electric guitar. Todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s costs à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ from television ads and music videos to hefty executive salaries à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ are still built on blockbuster albums.

Hence the emergence of scaled-back deals with acts like Candy Hill. Labels have signed new performers to singles deals before, typically to release what they viewed as ephemeral or novelty hits. Now, executives at Universal say, such arrangements will become more common for even quality acts because the single itself is the end product.

With Candy Hill, Universal paid a relatively small advance à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ described as being in à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“five figuresà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ to cover recording expenses. Ms. Shaw, who formed the group with Casha Darjean and Ociris Gomez, said the members had kept their day jobs working at an insurance company and doing other vocal work to be able to pay the rent at the house where they live together.

If one of their songs turns into a big hit, they hope to release a full album, and to tap other income sources, like touring and merchandise sales.

But turning a song into a hit does not appear to be getting any easier…

I don’t know what a good song would be for Blake tomorrow, but I do think he should do something to prove once and for all whether he can SING, or whether he’s just a beatboxer with great taste in music. I haven’t heard him really SING anything yet in any kind of original manner, aside from the note-for-note renditions of slightly off-the-beaten-path songs. Which is cool, but it ain’t Eccentric Idol. This is why I can’t get behind Blake yet. He seems to have the tiniest bit of an air about him, as if we’re expected to vote for him just because he’s different. Well, not in this household. I’m still waiting for him to prove to me that he deserves to be in a vocal competition amongst the likes of LaKisha, Melinda and Jordin.

Simon Cowell’s criteria, is the winner should be able to fit straight into the charts and become a superstar overnight. Must also have the look and appeal that will sell merchandising etc etc etc..

Vocals have nothing to do with it, he’ll just go with what sells.

    What’s keeping Sanjaya on ‘Idol?”

…Over the past several weeks, millions of viewers have cast their precious “Idol” votes not for those largely considered to be most talented, but for 17-year-old Sanjaya Malakar. It’s a trend that has prompted threats from the show’s creator and judge Simon Cowell, who said he will quit if Malakar wins the competition.

So why are so many people casting their vote for a contestant who, strictly based on vocal talent, probably doesn’t deserve it?

It could be any number of reasons, including a desire to belittle the show “” or true affection for the contestant. But the point, according to UNH professor Josh Meyrowitz, is this: It’s working.

“It’s a flexing of the grassroots muscle,” said Meyrowitz, a professor of media studies in the Department of Communications.

Meyrowitz linked the “Idol” phenomenon to a shift in power with relation to new media, the same shift that prompted TIME to name you its person of the year…

Regular readers know that last week I cited Sanjaya on “American Idol” as an example of how a superficial package can camouflage a lack of talent, while arguing that one can only get by that way for so long. Over the long haul, talent, hard work and a great attitude will always win out. In fact, I was so sure that Sanjaya’s run was about to end that I promised to sing “Take This Job and Shove It” on live TV if he wasn’t voted off last week. (So any TV producers out there who want to see me humiliate myself: You know where to find me.)….

Helpful parents and stage moms show their support

    Eye on Idol

After seeing their dejected son Zack return from last year’s “Canadian Idol” auditions with little success, Ottawa-area parents Sherry and Dennis LeBlanc refused to stand idly by a second year in a row.

This year, they came to the St. Laurent Centre with Zack, eager to show him that no matter how well he did in his audition, his parents would always be his biggest fans.

“Last time he was here he came alone and he was 16 and didn’t have much support,” said Sherry, decked out in a t-shirt bearing her son’s picture and the slogan “Zack is our Idol” across the front.

“(Last year) he made it through to see Sass Jordan and the rest of the crew but there was no support there. I think it made him nervous.”

After studying Paula Abdul’s comments on “American Idol” for weeks to get hints on what Zack should and shouldn’t do in his audition, both parents helped Zack rehearse for the big day by offering their best tips and critiques…..

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¢ CDs account for more than 85% of music sold.

The interesting quesiton is how much MUSIC OVERALL is sold today compared to what was sold in the past ?

If overall, my town sold 10,000 apples last year and my grocery sold 80% of that, I sell 8,000 apples.

But if overall my town sold just 9000 apples this year and my grocery increased it’s market share by selling 85% of that, I sell just 7650 apples.

  • Lisa B

    There, happy now ?

I doubt anyone was going to mention it. :rolleyes_tb:

Very cool that DAUGHTRY is opening for Bon Jovi in Las Vegas! :thumbup_tb:

I agree it is a full circle moment in that Simon said that Chris needed to have more confidence in himself and show more charisma like various lead singers of bands like Bon Jovi after he sang WDOA in Top 24 week. Then Chris had a Top 40 Hit on the Billboard charts with his rendition of “Wanted Dead or Alive” by Bon Jovi from the compilation Season 5 CD. He has also been compared by various critics as a young Bon Jovi without the hair. Furthermore, Chris has said that he would love to have a career like Bon Jovi’s in the AP article.

This must be another meaningful momemt for Chris.

So will Blake wear plaid this week?
    (Far more important than song choice.}

Will Sligh actually take out Cowell with the microphone stand?

How many tearful tweens will be in the audience? Will they be bussed in by Nigel after last weeks success?

  • Little Debbi

“This must be another meaningful momemt for Chris.”

Wait a minute, is this concert on April 1st?

  • squishy

Nope instead of tattooing the tears on his face, Chris will be in the audience this week crying for Sanjaya!

  • Ladybug

So will Blake wear plaid this week?
    (Far more important than song choice.}

I think he needs to go the whole golfer look this week. Hat, club in hand, those little spikey shoes…

Will Sligh actually take out Cowell with the microphone stand?

Actually, taking out the entire judging stand might be cool.

How many tearful teens will be in the audience? Will they be bussed in by Nigel after last weeks success?

This would not surprise me. An entire section of screaming, crying tweeners reminiscent of Beatlemania in its prime.

  • t2

Did no one hear my plea? Dear goodness–hey macarena–the house is on fire. They are going to let Ashley Hartmann sing again…on a record…multiple copies of it….

Can no one stop this inhumanity… :eek_wp:

How about if he gets Sanjaya tattooed across his chest.

  • squishy

The crying tweens was last week. There needs to be something different this week for Sanjaya. Perhaps jugglers?

  • squishy

    JJ,

That would definitely work. SANJAYA on the front and DAUGHTRY on the back. He has to be consistent and make sure that it is in capital letters on both sides.

  • Little Boy Blue

Taylor Hicks in concert: What would the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ judges say?
The à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ champ played Mystic Lake, singing everything from his own soul songs to Supertramp

I found this review interesting in that the reviewer refused to present his personal take on the concert, prefering instead to present what he thinks the AI judges would say if they attended his concert.

Anyway, to Soul Patrolers lurking out there, I read from the Boogie board that Minnesota was another sold out concert ( venue size is about 2,700 ).

Here is the set list :

    1. Gonna Move
    2. Give Me Tonight
    3. Hell of a Day
    4. Wherever I Lay My Hat/Night Shift/Chain Gang
    5. Heart and Soul/ jam session/Brown-eyed handsome man/mixture of all
    6. Just to Feel That Way
    7. Hold on to Your Love/ Blues you can Use/ Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s my life/ Hold on to Your Love
    8. Young Turks (Young hearts)
    9. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Gone
    10. The Deal
    11. Heaven Knows
    12. The Maze/Tupelo/Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Get it On/The Maze
    13. The Runaround
    14. Encore: The Long Way Home

What’s missing from the above list ?? Taylor’s BEST SONG in his album IMHO — THE RIGHT PLACE.

Hall & Oates’ She’s Gone was such a hit and crowd pleaser in his previous show I heard that there was clamor for him to do it again ( and he did ).

And BTW, people are wondering what ever happened to Jeff Lopez. He was listed as the other sax on tour and was supposed to join the group at Birmingham. He’s nowhere to be found.

Finally, here’s a Mediabase chart on how JTFTW is doing. It looks like fears of the single’s death are pretty much exagerated. It is approaching the top 20 in nationwide AC airplay ( 21 today, up from 23 last week ).

Good Morning all you GORGEOUS people.

    Thanks LisaB, for the articles.

Thanks claireb7tx, for the Taylor video. First video is just a bit out of sync..

Me think Sanjaya needs to get the same Big&SEXY hair contract Kat has. At least they won’t have to do to much with his hair. It just down right FABULOUS..

  • Little Boy Blue

Will Sligh actually take out Cowell with the microphone stand?

I was quite surprised that Cowell took that thing ( mic stand jabbing) in stride and actually COMPLIMENTED Sligh as opposed to Paula’s less than her usual effusive praise… this guy is unpredicatable ( or is he practicing reverse psychology ?).

    Kirsten,

I notice that Ruben Studdard has 2 songs that are in the top 20 on URBAN AC radio.

Fantasia also has one song on Urban AC in the top 20.

I wonder how large the audience is in this format compared to AC or HAC.

  • Little Boy Blue

    Jordin Sparks:
    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I (Who Have Nothing)à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ : 166 AC, 209 Pop

IMHO, Jordin’s song is so old, it can be made new again with a more contemporized rendition ( her’s for instance). It has the same kind of melody and feeling that Christina Aguillera’s current hit — HURT has.

I look forward to seeing her record this. My opinion is, Jordin’s performance was TOPS last week. The fact that Simon said her performance wanted to make him jump off a bridge made my day ( I silently screamed — YES, DO IT SIMON !!).

Screw Jennifer Hudson, Daughtry is the REAL Deal

…The incredibly timbre of Chris’ voice left me utterly speechless. This live show was raw; the sound was done very well. His voice sounded amazing. On the debut album, the tracks are mixed down and his strong voice sometimes sounds watered down but live, it is another story altogether.

Okay, awesome song of the day: “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. Took me a while to get into her, but I love the song, and it got me pumped this morning at the gym. Ran an entire mile in 10 minutes! (I know that may seem laughable to some, but when I started running, I could barely go a minute without gasping and wheezing for breath…so it’s a big deal for me. I won’t have gym access this summer so I need to train myself to do other outdoor activities and the goal is to work up to a 30 min/3 mile daily workout interspersed with some longer runs a few times a week.)

Comment on the article “The Album, a Commodity in Disfavor” that LisaB posted (and btw thank you for posting these great links!)

One of the biggest reasons for the shift, analysts say, is that consumers à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ empowered to cherry-pick à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ are forgoing album purchases after years of paying for complete CDà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s with too few songs they like.

To me, that hits the nail right on the head. It is so frustrating for me as a music consumer to buy an album only to find maybe 1-2 good tracks on it, with the rest crappy filler. I hope this forces the record industry to improve the overall albums that they produce, realizing that consumers are no longer willing to pay for filler tracks when the downloading option is available to music consumers now. I guess it is a personal preference of mine to buy an entire album and enjoy it in its entirety, so singles alone do not cut it for me.

  • Lisa B

I also checked the chart positions for this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s idols. Though, I only checked the AC, HAC and Pop charts.

“Wanted Dead or Alive” did well it was nastalic and a good song Chris D just sang it and it was not as good as John Bon Jovie .Chris D has a diferent style that is in now w/ a gruff voice of a hard rocker. So do not compare Chris D is Chris D which is what he wants. Did you notice the acts he are fallowing also so happen to be on Ai this year?(Bono on the specail. I know it is a management connection )) It is good for his band..and other new singers too.Noone contestant ruins AI it started w/ season ! and it is still moving on the the next year guys…they think green . Just tired of the fans wars or putting them on pedistals.

Okay, awesome song of the day: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rehabà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Amy Winehouse.

Almost the whole album is fun in my opinion. Amy Winehouse’s music is kind of wry as well as being quirky and brassy. I love her voice. And yes, it’s very good work-out music for sure.

Also, Lily Allen is another female vocalist whose music is wry and good to work out to, but totally pop.

    But I digress…

I thought the review of Taylor’s concert was interesting in the “What Would the Three Stoogies Say” kind of format. That’s the writer’s way of giving a mixed review without actually coming out and saying that.

Blake is doing Matisyahu??? That would be awesome.

    vegasdee – I didn’t like that song; I don’t think its Blake’s style either.

Lisa – that Spice Girls and Elton video is a hoot! But who is Blue? Is/was this a UK boy band?

t2 – I don’t remember Ashley Hartley. It looks like she got a bit of fame, mainly for being blond and shapely.

I listened to the 311 and the original Love Song by the Cure. Even though I like that song, nobody does it like the Cure and I don’t think that Blake would make people stand up and notice with that song. Fields of Gold, now that would be great. Mandisa did make a reference to Sting regarding Blake.

    Jeff Buckley -

When I was a kid, there was a popular, local kids variety show called Wonderama. I was on the show a few times. One of the times I was on, the musical guest was Jeff’s dad, Tim Buckley. I remember he was very good.

I love that Blake was on that list but would have put him higher. Ryan Starr? I don’t even know who Nadia is. I have to admit to laughing that Taylor is below Clay. :laugh_tb: I actually agree with them putting Chris D over Ace because Ace is the best looking guy ever in the competition imo but in a cute guy way as opposed to sexy. Love Bo and glad he’s on the list.

  • Boulder Soul

….Tim Buckley. I remember he was very good.

WOW, lucky you. Tim Buckley’s “Happy Sad” is one of my favorites. He reportedly had a 6 – 7 octave range. Amazing. His son, has an impressive range as well.

Nobody has a 6-7 octave range. That goes outside of human hearing in both directions. 3 octaves is considered amazing.

Mybad, typo…meant to type, reportedly a 5-6 octave range.

    Per Tim Buckley’s web site:

“I was only about 12 years old, and I had probably five or six notes to my voice. I heard a recording of a trumpet player playing things way up there. So I tried to reach those notes. Little Richard got them. It was like a falsetto scream. I’d ride my bicycle around the neighborhood screaming at the buses until I couldn’t go any higher. “Then one day I heard the opposite end, the baritone sax, waaaay…doooown…there. I said, ‘There’s gotta be a way to do that.’ “So I practiced, and I screamed, and I practiced some more, until I finally ended up with my five-to-five-and-a-half octave range.” (From an unpublished interview with Frankie Nemko.)

Although I have never heard of someone with that large of a vocal range and the confusion of the original post has been cleared up, that range is not larger than human hearing. My piano spans just over 7 octaves (as do any with 88 keys) and is well within human hearing on both ends.

    Voice

…Carey is said to be able to cover all the notes from the alto vocal range leading to those of a coloratura soprano, and her vocal trademark is her ability to sing in the whistle register. She has cited Minnie Riperton as the greatest influence on her singing technique, and from a very early age she attempted to emulate Riperton’s high notes, to increasing degrees of success as her vocal range expanded. According to most sources, she has a five-octave vocal range, though some credit her with seven or eight octaves

But if you’re not writing a research paper and just curious about something wikipedia is actually a great place not go. Not everything there is wrong. There are a few discrepancies but for the most part there is a ton of information that is easy to find. I heard that a lot of fact checking does go into it.

    CRITICS’ CHOICES; Pop Music

One of the most startling musical events of 1950 was the emergence of a 22-year-old Quechua Indian from the Peruvian Andes with a five-octave voice who sang contralto, mezzo soprano, soprano and coloratura, using growls, chirps and a variety of wordless effects when words would not suffice. Her first album, ”Voice of Xtabay,” hit the top of the pop best-seller list at the end of 1950….

Also a master of the piano and guitar, Purim is regarded as one of the pioneers in jazz fusion. She recorded 30 albums with Moreira, another Brazilian, nowher husband.

  • LB2

Sorry – don’t think Taylor or Bo are sexy. I agree with half of that list.

As for the spoiler, some of those choices are awful. Why would Haley and Phil pick something unrecognizable (I know those songs, but I doubt most do)? I like Blake’s choice, but him in the pimp spot with that doesn’t make sense if he’s doing the 311 version. On the other hand, if he Blakized it, that’s another story. And “Against all Odds” is played out – I thought Chris R. would pick something more fun given his fake-boot last week.

I do like Melinda and Jordin’s choice.

  • undecided

Well I suppose it depends on how you want to define vocal range. It usually applies to the useful range of a singer’s voice. In males the falsetto is not considered useful in classical singing but it is in popular music. The same goes for the muddy lowest notes that are not clear or barely audible and therefore not part of the useful or natural singing voice. The whistle note falls outside of the useful singing range also. It’s a cute pet trick but otherwise useless.

If you gauge a singer’s range including chirps and growls, you may find they can make some interesting alien sounds but it ain’t really singing.

  • Little Boy Blue

    RE: Against All Odds

    About the “Spoilers”

Blake – surprise surprise 311 covered that song. it was actually quite popular. i think its a good choice for him.

Gina – i like this song. i can tell she’s into the pseudo rock artist which, whatever, it’s her taste. she’s kinda the female daughtry. i wish there are a chick that sang authentic rock music though. i still think she might do really well.

Chris R. – I know this song has been sung to death on this show but I think Chris has a really soft, nice voice just like Phil and could add a lot to the song. He’ll probaby do pretty well.

Haley – omg, see you later girl. has anyone even heard this song before. i listened to a 30 second clip on itunes and almost fell asleep.

    Jordin – hmm, interesting.

Lakisha – Whatever, she officially bores me.

Phil – Never heard the song. It’s not on itunes. I don’t care either.

Sanjaya – lol, this is probably the only matchbox 20 song i like. Sanjaya will be hilarious as always.

Melinda – Yes, finally something out of her comfort zone. She’s going to be awesome.

Sligh – ugh, hate this song. watch sligh try to be sexy like johnny reznik. gross.

  • http://www.chris-sligh.info steve-o-meter

Anyone wanna join me in chat?

  • MaryS-NJ

I think these “rumored” songs are dubious. Based on the Sligh song clues this can’t be his choice.

I can’t believe anybody would sing Against All Odds on American Idol ever again. I think the song is cursed… unless it was “suggested” after another song choice couldn’t be cleared, in which case, what did the Chris do to fall out of favor?

  • Little Boy Blue

    As per Wikipedia,

    It says here :

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Against_All_Odds_(Take_a_Look_at_Me_Now)

As of July 2006, Against All Odds” and Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” (1993) are the most performed songs throughout the five seasons of American Idol; both have been sung on the program five times.

If Chris R. does the song, it will be the 6th time.

Phil Collins must be flattered that his song is very well liked.

As for Whitney Houston… I conceive if a day when AI would spring a surprise on us and make her a special guest at the finale where all idol contestants who have ever done this song perform with her as he finally overcomes the effect of drugs and RETURNS to her singing career once again.

Here are her co-performers — Kat Mcphee, Vonzell Solomon, Jennifer Hudson, Lakisha Jones and ( can’t remember who the other one was )….

  • Lisa B

Melinda – Yes, finally something out of her comfort zone. Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going to be awesome

It’s originally a Frankie Valli song (1967), covered by all the big guns in the past.

For example: Gloria Gaynor, Shirley Bassey, The Temptations, Diana Ross & the Supremes,

So not out of her comfort zone at all

  • squishy

I hope those “rumored” songs are dubious too.

Lakisha needs to officially stay away from Whitney Houston. If she makes it that far, what is she going to sing during “rock” week? Instead of thinking “big”, Lakisha needs to think “different”.

The only positive thing about Lakisha singing Whitney Houston is that Simon is going to skewer her for being “too indulgent” and becoming “boring”.

Gina was actually in a rock band before idol. It’s her choice to fit that mold. I think she wants to be like Pink, Kellie Clarkson, Avril those kinds of people. They’re all posers so I guess you could say Gina is one. That kind of music sells well though. I don’t think AI made her be “rock” I think the chose her because she was “rock” and they wouldnt have if she was a regular female singer.

    ‘American Idol’ losers
Ousted singers from the final 20 talk about the show and the 10 things viewers want to know

    …The Sanjaya factor

While other singers were ousted, Sanjaya Malakar lingers.

He may be a lesser singer, but none of the departing would complain about that. “I knew, getting into this, that it wasn’t just about singing,” Hunt said.

Malakar has built a popularity with young viewers – and with fellow contestants. “I love the kid and he’s a sweet guy,” Rogers said.

Head echoed that. “What America needs to understand is: You’re seeing this kid grow up on TV. He’s 17 years old; he’s never been through this in his life. … He’s going to be a success in the music business. He’s got all of the great looks and he’s full of talent.”

Besides, Sloan said, this is inevitable. “People love him and he has a fan base. People believe in him.”…

Oh, this spoiler list is hilarious. “Every Breath You Take?” Bwahahahaha!!!

So hard to catch up at the end of the day! Thoughts:

AFan–thanks SO MUCH for the list of good music!! I’m having a blast checking it all out and am especially enjoying Neko Case.

Loved the Sexiest Idols (fan votes, I assume?) IMO Taylor should have been above Clay and Blake (sorry, I don’t like my men pocket-sized!). Laughed my a$$ off at this quote from the article re: McPhee:

“She is just gorgeous. With looks like a supermodel, there’s a bright future ahead of that girl!! And she has a great personality, which makes her even prettier.”

If sexy is based on looks alone, Katharine takes the cake, no doubt about it. But LMAO about the “great personality.” If we’re factoring Kat’s personality in, she’s about as beautiful as a troll.

  • MaryS-NJ

ETA because I’m a day late and a Dollar short.

Spense, cool! Thanks for the link! I will check it out! :) If you win the party, tell him to rig it so that I win the Chicago version. :tongue1_tb:

    Jersey, Wrigley Field! Can’t wait!

Just for kicks, here’s Gwen’s speech inducting the Police.

Maybe we Elliott fans can outrun him next week.

  • Kirsten

On tomorrowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s show, the remaining 10 singers will perform songs by artists who have inspired guest mentor Gwen Stefani.

Next week, they should have the person who wins the stupid quiz contest define the theme.

Songs Eugene Filmore from AnywhereUSA has on his iPod (if he had one).

  • squishy

Oh I like this theme MUCH BETTER than 90′s pop. I LOVE THE 80′S!!!

Bring on the Cure, The Police, U2 (80′s), Cindy Lauper, Culture Club, etc.

  • SpenserJ

On that note, I got Police tickets today!

Mr. Spense and I are going to see them here in Tampa too. I think it’s in May? LOL I forget – but I did get tickets.

Just random responses – I remember watching Wonderama as a kid.

Some times Clay Aiken looks like the most gorgeous man in the world.

Seems like the interesting one will definitely be Sanjaya next show. The divas will be boring. Chris R. and Phil will disappoint.

  • hs

Elliott’s CDs are sold out in numerous Targets. I cannot believe I am admitting this, but I had an appt in Baltimore today and went out of my way to stop at a Target there, but they were sold out, too…

I think if he hits 100,000, its a huge deal.

    Blake Lewis – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Love Songà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    Chris Richardson – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Speakà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    Chris Sligh – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    Gina Glocksen – Pretenders ballad
    Haley Scarnato – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“True Colorsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    Jordin Sparks -à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Hey Babyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
Lakisha Jones – Donna summers song
Melinda Doolittle – Donna Summers song
    Phil Stacey – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Every Breath You Takeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬
    Sanjaya Malakar – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Bathwaterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

I’m guessing the Pretenders ballad could be I’ll Stand By You? Don’t know much by them I have to confess, but that one I like. If it is I can’t say I’m looking forward to Gina butchering it. :dry_tb:

As for the Donna Summer songs, Last Dance and On The Radio are both popular choices for the diva singers on UK talent shows so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s those two.

If Sligh is singing Every Little Thing he’ll have his work cut out to impress me – I HATE that song. I’d much rather he was singing Phil’s Police song :sad_tb:.

And Chris R (who I hate) gets to sing the No Doubt song I like whilst Jordin (who I like) gets to sing the No Doubt song I hate. :rolleyes_wp:

This ain’t gonna be my night. :annoyed_tb:

Okay, now we see that the kids will sing songs from artists that inspired Gwen S. I don’t see the logic in 3 no doubt songs being sung. She gets inspired from herself? Can someone please explain this to me. That is why I have a hard time believing this list of songs.

    GO ELLIOTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gah, I hate the polls where people can power vote….I’m sorry, but there’s no other explanation for the list to end up the way it is……I like my men sweaty, soulful, and without any resemblance to serial killers…..LMAO!

The whistle note falls outside of the useful singing range also. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a cute pet trick but otherwise useless.

If you gauge a singerà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s range including chirps and growls, you may find they can make some interesting alien sounds but it ainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really singing.

I agree with this…one of the most over-rated moments in AI history is Kelly’s “Natural Woman” for precisely that reason…she resorts to a cute pet trick hitting that whistle note a la Mariah Carey for no reason other than to show that she can. It made zero sense musically and all but ruined an otherwise lovely performance (although I imagine glory note fans rejoiced).

“Natural Dolphin,” maybe. “Natural Woman,” not so much.

HDD is usually on the $ in their predictions. The numbers for E were between 80 and 90K. I’ll be happy with that. I wonder why they haven’t moved since about 45%? Do some stores not stock him. So the theme for tomorrow nite is 80s pop? Could be fun but 2 Donna Summers songs?

I don’t really think, being a Taylor fan, you can say anything about anyone elses numbers.
As for Elliott, 45% does not mean that that is 45% of cds sold, it means that it’s 45% of retailers reporting. I think he’ll do 90k, which is expected. He originally was going to ship 180k, but they upped it to 250k based on preorders, hope that helps clear up some of the confusion. I’d love it if Jordin would do another song, it doesn’t really show off her voice much, although i appreciate her doing an uptempo song.

  • cateye

In the vein of being a bad Taylor fan….

For the upcoming concert, do I HAVE to know the names (first and last) of all the band members? Should I be able to comment whether or not they are part of LMBO?

Do I NEED to know the play list before and after the show and what musicians were “tagged” or “teased” during his performance? Do I have to KNOW the breakdown of the audience, i.e. male to female ratio, youngsters vs bedazzled ones, “real” Tay fans to others?

Cuz, basically, I’m just going to listen to the music….I really don’t give a carp about anything else….

And, to top if off, I really don’t like Gwen Stefani…so here’s hoping for a real short yodeling performance by her!

Awesome. I personally stopped pledging my musical loyalty to singers based on their Billboard/radio airplay popularity around the same time I hit puberty.

I agree that making fun of Katharine for her bulimia is a little low. But I don’t have a problem snarking on her for giving a round of interviews talking about how she was so tired of talking about her bulimia, and actually at one point stating that it’s dangerous to have too much information about it, and then turning around and appearing on a magazine cover to talk about — you guessed it — her bulimia. Oh, I know, I know, she’s a poor little lamb who doesn’t want to talk about it (I’m sure she’d much rather deconstruct the musicality of “Open Toes”) but keeps getting forced to by those big bad glossy publications. Which is funny, seeing as how earlier this year she was running around telling people how she stood up to Clive Davis and everyone at RCA, telling them they could take “Over the Rainbow” and shove it up their asses. So she’s got the balls to boss around Clive Davis, but she’s a shrinking violet in the presence of the Self Magazine editors? Or is her desire for another cover shoot trumping her fatigue from talking about the bulimia?

I don’t know her (nor do her fans), she could be the sweetest girl in the world for all I know, but her public image provides me with a lot of entertainment.

There was an MTV article a while back where Kat talked about how the RCA execs wanted SOTR on her album and she flat-out refused. And don’t forget, Clive Davis wanted to release her album in December, but Katharine talked him out of it (hahaha)…because she knows the record industry better than Clive, of course.

Daughtry concert relocates to WorkPlay soundstage

Daughtry’s April 3 concert at WorkPlay has been moved from the theater to the soundstage at the entertainment complex, organizers announced today.

Chris DaughtryThe soundstage, a larger venue, can hold more audience members and will provide greater security, they said. Daughtry’s 8 p.m. show was sold out, but additional tickets have been placed on sale for $20 each.
WorkPlay’s soundstage is standing room only. The theater has chairs and tables, along with a floor space that alternates between seats and standing room.

WorkPlay’s booking agent, Todd Coder, said refunds will be given to ticketholders who are unhappy about the change in location for Daughtry’s show. For more information, call 879-4773.

Daughtry, the rock band fronted by “American Idol” singer Chris Daughtry, has been selling out concert dates across the country. Daughtry’s self-titled debut disc has gone double platinum and tops Billboard’s rock chart this week. The CD also has produced the hit single “It’s Not Over.”

    Some quotes:

In fact, when McPhee’s record label announced plans to include her signature song from “Idol” on her upcoming debut album, the singer replied, “No you’re not.”

“The one thing you learn about ‘Idol’ is that you have to be really tough,” McPhee explained. “You learn how to be a powerful businesswoman right away, and I have gotten really strong about what I want and what I don’t. And, for me, it’s fun because it’s me against all the guys.”

What McPhee doesn’t want is to be rushed. While debut “Idol” albums are typically released at the end of the same year as the finalists’ “Idol” season and subsequent tour, she’s been vocal about pushing her LP to 2007.

Awesome to see Daughtry at the Workplay. I’d love to see a Daughtry/Hicks duet one day…both have Southern roots and, I’m sure, overlapping taste in music (at least in spots)…I’d pay some good money for that!

  • rher

If this really is true, then Gwen saying being she is inspired by No Doubt is funny! Hahahaha! You are so right Sexygirl. It’s all about the stars. The thread on IDF says that Gwen had a short list of things to pick from. I can hear it now – you can only pick my songs! Lakisha and Melinda crying out “what the hell are we supposed to sing?” To which she answers, Donna Summer. That’s it!

I think Kat was just starting to learn about how the media works when she made comments about her bulemia and other things. It’s easy to get lost in being the center of attention. And when she made comments about Meatloaf and other stuff that people consider bitchy she probably wasn’t thinking about media spin. She has gotten a lot better recently with what she can and can’t say. Because she said the bulemia thing, now everyone has to ask. That kind of stuff gets blown up in the media and she probably expected a lot of attention, but not every interview being about it. It’s kind of like what happened when Ellen Degeneres came out in 1997. She has stated that she didn’t realize it would be such a big deal because it was something that she had already come to terms with and was proud of. Unfortunately it became the opposite of what she expected. Kat getting tired of people asked her about her weight is expected. But from what i’ve seen, she always answers graciously and never rolls her eyes or gets snippy with an interviewer.
Also, about the whole “no SOTR” and pushing the album back. I’m sure those were decisions discusses behind the scenes and there were probably many discussions on the subjects. I doubt Katharine was the one calling the shots. It is just easier for them to say she didn’t want it, because she probably didn’t but it was probably a group effort with her team for those things to come together the way they did. And when all idol’s are expected to be little puppets attached to Clive’s fingers, there’s no doubt they would try to make it look like something was there decision. They’ve all done it.

  • Lu

afan – Didn’t want SOTR where? on her cd? I haven’t really paid close attention to what’s on her cd…

Nevada – We’re puzzling about HDD numbers over at the etrain. Do you happen to know how often they’re updated?

  • jpfan

    HDD 54.9%
    Elliott #3 61,011

  • madaboutu

Hey……..what happened to Elliott on Ellen? Or am I thinking the wrong day? I turned it on and Stephanie Edwards is on.
Ellens viewers have picked Melinda, Lakisha, Blake and Jordin as the top 4. That kind of sounds how it should be. Ellen likes Chris S., and she obviously likes the name Chris.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Yeah, yeah, I know, Kat’s undergone a transformation from lost little lamb to media-savvy glam princess, and I’m privileged to have been able to watch it. She’s never said a bitchy, entitled, snarky, passive-agressive thing in her life, and certainly not since her Idol run. And even if she did, you can’t really blame her, because she wasn’t thinking about how the media would take it. I mean, who thinks about how others will interpret their statements before they speak? That’s just crazy talk!

  • AFan

Lu, yes on her CD. Supposedly they were going to put it on. Usually the winner+runner up’s single off AI is on their debut album. I’m sure both Taylor and Kat were in the fight to keep them off.

  • daisy

Go Elliott! It is like voting night on the E train. can I vote for an indie artist who stubbornly say his song on top three night and made his cd in a most unconventional way. From negotiating with Target, to becoming a song writer and having his own Sing like Yamin it credits, I have never been so proud to be his fan. (:

  • Kirsten

Weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re puzzling about HDD numbers over at the etrain. Do you happen to know how often theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re updated?

HDD does not appear to follow much of a pattern. Updates occur whenever. Sometimes, hours will go by with nothing and then 5 quick updates in a row. A minor percentage update may result in huge numbers of units moved while a larger percentage will result in not much of a change at all.

Sometimes, it will be stuck at around 80%, and then they will suddenly declare that it is the final report with no numbers changing.

HDD numbers are fun, but frustrating.

We won’t get the final HDD numbers until tomorrow afternoon.

Nigel has confirmed the theme. Buhbye Haley!!!! Yesssss!

Actually, it’s the perfect song for Haley. It’s a song that is so pure it’s easy to oversing — which most people do (see Turner, Nadia). Haley is incapable of oversinging so it is close to perfect for her.

  • AFan

Kat, you’re maginfying my words times like 1000. I said Kat knew it was going to get her attention. That’s obviously why she did it. But someone new to the whole media thing never knows exactly how it’s going to play out. Also, I’ve never really heard her say that she’s tired of bulemia questions. I’m sure she is, but I don’t remember a specific article about it and surely it doesn’t reflect in her interviews since, as I stated above, she always answers nicely. Kat’s said things in the media that some people think are bitchy, I know that and I’m not trying to say she’s not. I just think some things are blown way out of proportion to make her look worse that she really is because people don’t like her as a person.

  • Paula

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really think, being a Taylor fan, you can say anything about anyone elses numbers.

Why not? Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s sold more albums than anyone else who released albums this Fall from AI, sans Chris – he sold more than Kat, Kellie, Ruben, Clay and most likely Elliott. When any of them catch up to Taylor, let me know, okay?

Griz — You forgot Fantasia. She hasn’t sold well either.

Kat has had far more media coverage, photo shoots, magazines, TV programs, modeling on runways, red carpets, etc., video that was released on TRL and now on MTV, and still she’s not selling.

I hate not being able to post here from work! So catching up -

    1) I’m glad Ace and Blake made AOL’s Top 10 Sexiest Idols. They’re both worthy IMO!

    2) The latest spoiler list…geez, we’re in for some trainwrecks tomorrow night. I can’t believe Chris R of all people is singing my favorite No Doubt song. I can’t imagine him pulling off “Don’t Speak” at all. Why couldn’t Jordin pick that instead of crappy “Hey Baby”??

And Melinda and Lakisha both choosing Donna Summer? Ugh! Remember Stephanie said she was considering “Nothing Compares 2 U” this week in one of her exit interviews? I wish Melinda or Kiki had chosen that.

    3) congrats to Elliott on his first week sales!

  • SEXYGIRL

The only Gwen Stefani/No Doubt song I know is Don’t Speak so tomorrow should be interesting (if these spoilers are right). And it really seems like Lakisha and Melinda are in a oneupmanship kinda battle with both doing Donna Summers. And Gwen Stefani as the guest mentor? She seems just a bit too current to be able to offer the same kind of advice that Peter and Lulu and even Barry Manilow did…

  • daisy

I actually enjoy Donna Summers, but do think it is odd that both Lakisa and Melinda are picking her songs. Another mistep I am afraid for dueling divas. I am more puzzled why Gwen Stefani is so inspired by No doubt songs? Seems a bit self serving, does the girl get out much?! My world is my world is my world, yech

and thanks MJ for letting E fans have our day, been a long long time coming (:

Quite a few Idol finalists have been dropped by their label after lackluster sales.

Yes, they’re important in terms of sustaining a career. But they have no effect on changing anyone’s opinion about their personal favorites. Pointing out Katharine’s sales compared to Taylor’s means nothing to a Katharine McPhee fan. It’s not going to make them go…”oh, well in that case…I need to go buy a Taylor Hicks CD”. And vice versa.

    That’s my point.

On a side note, I listened to the radio today for about 15 minutes. Something I never do but had no choice in the matter. Anyway, in those 15 minutes I heard Daughtry’s It’s Not Over, McPhee’s Over It and a nice long commerical advertisment for Taylor Hicks’ upcoming tour dates in the area. Quite a trifecta for only 15 minutes of listening time.

For anyone that may be interested, the station was B104.1 out of Allentown, Pa.

OH day-um, me too! Donna Summer RAWKS – she has *some* powerhouse set of pipes and no one will compare with her – don’t matter who is singing her songs. She’s the Queen of Disco!

    Hot Stuff
    Love to Love you Baby

HDD has a new article about E’s CD today. New prediction is up to 100K. His cousin Josh Abraham produced the CD. Actually the oddest thing about Elliott, why not just call your famous cousin on the phone to get help on the music career. Anway, it looks like they’re going to end up helping each other. Songs that Gwen likes – what a weird category.

  • PamsterAtl

Thanks Lu for that Elliott clip. Wish I had more time to chat. I am loving my E CD. All day long it plays in my earphones. Sigh. Yum. It would be nice if he made great sales, if only to make sure he continues to provide me my E Fix with new music. My Way – yes, he’s very Sinatra – it would be a nice R&B flavored version, of course.

  • Lu

    From the Etrain…

I think the HDD rumor mill just updated:

STEPPING INTO THE POP LIGHT: With lots of anticipation for Elliott Yamin’s first-week sales on his debut LP for Sony/ATV President Danny Strick’s new Hickory label, attention is focused on producer Josh Abraham and his Pulse Recording Label/ Management. Abraham lent a helping hand to his cousin Yamin (there’s some Idol trivia for you) by producing several tracks on the album, as well as co-managing Elliott with Jeff Rabhan’s Three Rings Project firm. A seasoned rock producer who has helmed albums for 30 Seconds to Mars, Staind and Velvet Revolver, among others, Abraham adds some pop/R&B credentials to his recording resume with the album, which is expected to sell close to 100k this week. Seems like producers who are diversifying their projects continue to be ahead of the game. Hey, it worked for Rick Rubin. (3/26p)

    – I’m guessing HDD is now projecting up?!

  • PamsterAtl

I am going to miss tomorrow night’s show (Shock) because my husband and I are going to the Fox Theatre to see Celtic Woman and I am not going to tape it…. I will check online for what & how they sang – but – I am not voting – so I guess my addiction is beginning to wear off.

Oh – Atlanta’s radio station big music festival this summer has as it’s headliner, Daughtry, and Dashboard Confessional, and Augustana, and drum roll, also Katharine McPhee. Hmm. That should be a great concert! I might even buy tickets for that one!

  • jpfan

Since MJ said it was okay, more E news. There’s an interview with Elliott on LA morning show today that’s the best one I’ve ever seen.
They asked him what Simon’s comment on “song choice” meant to him and he said “absolutely nothing.” He never listened and would only sing the songs he wanted. He talks about Taylor and his song choices. Excellent and serious interview. It Fox LA/2nd interview after the show.

  • PamsterAtl

Has there been any news of Elliott’s tour schedule yet? Once again, Etrain has lost my registration and I am locked out…. sigh. Okay – I am just looking at his myspace nowadays and here to get updates.

  • PamsterAtl

Gotta go watch “The Riches” – great show.

  • Lu

jpfan – where is that interview?

  • Carla D

Congrats to Elliott for what looks like an outstanding first week of sales! I’m so thrilled for him and his fans. I bought his CD on Saturday and I really enjoy it. His voice, as always, is flawless.

Also a big “woo hoo” for Daughtry reaching 2,000,000 in CDs sold and 10,000,000 myspace spins and 300,000 myspace friends.

And I can’t forget to give major props to Taylor, Kat, Kellie, and Bucky – Taylor’s touring is a big hit with everyone and his single continues to steadily climb the AC charts, Kat’s single continues to climb the charts and her video is a hit, and Kellie and Bucky are making quite a name for themselves on the country music scene (I love their videos!).

As for Season 6, if the spoilers are correct, I’m just a tad bit disappointed. I love Blake’s choice, but the rest are, well, bleh. However, I’m sure I’ll watch anyway. Trainwrecks are always entertaining.

  • jpfan

It’s posted on etrain (E on Fox LA today.) It’s the 2nd interview (done one on one after ths show) not the one televised. First time I’ve ever seen Elliott actually look almost angry. I’d link it but I don’t know how. If you can link it you should since the last part deals with the show and Simon.

  • bean99

Congrats to Elliott on a great first week’s sales! :clap_tb: I had my doubts when it was taking so long for him to get a deal but he’s come through with a very good album with some radio friendly songs.

I’ll be interested to see what songs they do tomorrow. I’m not so sure about that list because some of the choices seem very strange to me but I guess we’ll have to see. I liked some No Doubt songs although wasn’t impressed by Gwen’s solo ones.

    Wha- La!

thanks for the heads up on Elliott!

  • jpfan

Angry is an exaggeration. Sorry. He says that the words “song selection” meant absolutely nothing to him and he sang the obscure songs he wanted. When the interview asks about Simon’s focus on song selection, he makes a dismissive hand gesture, makes a pffft sound like who gives a crap about Simon. Angry is too strong because he’s smiling. Hope that helps. Carolina’s post sums it up well. I hope he does some more serious interviews. He has alot to say.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

bookworm, in the first video he talked about how his album came about, his cousin, the hook up with Sony. Also talked about how everyone in his family cries alot,,, mom, dad, and Elliott.

In the second video he was more serious, talked about missing his family, was home in Richmond last week (i think it was last week), stayed the night with his Mom and hasn’t done that in many years….misses her cooking.

When they asked him about the show and Simon (paraphrasing) Simon says it’s all about song choice, Elliott seriously said pffffffttttt. He chose obscure songs and thought that the audience was big enough to be introduced to new music and artists. He learned alot about different genre’s of music — mentioned Taylor — and said they should pick a song that they feel good singing.

There’s more but my pea brain is tard. Maybe someone else will fill in.

  • http://inkdbylilyanna.com carolina

jp, I wouldn’t say Elliott was angry either but he did get *serious* with a slight frown and offered advice that wasn’t mainstream Idol.

    Good for him.

Okay, today just keeps getting better. I finally got around to checking my mail today and there, on the cover of Rolling Stone, in nice bold letters it says “Chris Daughtry: American Idol on Top”. I’m so excited I can’t stand it and as I’m frantically looking for an article, I find on page 30 a nice full page Q&A article with 1/2 page pic. I’m sorry if a link or something was posted earlier in the week, I haven’t been around the blog much lately. I’m so glad I subscribe to Rolling Stone!

I hope this list is wrong because I don’t want Blake to be 2nd this week. He was 4th last week and Melinda had pimp spot so putting her in 11th would be unfair. Chris S was 2nd to last and now gets pimp spot? :ponder_tb:

Why is Melinda almost always near the end? And didn’t Sligh get the pimp spot already?

bean, I’m with you. I hope that order is wrong for multiple reasons, Blake being one of them.

Have you guys noticed that Chris R and Blake are often separated by one performance? This week, last week, the week before, and the 2nd week and almost in the 1st week. Weird.

  • t2

If that is Melinda and Lakisha’s actual choices can we just give them both the boot this week because it’s just more of the same.

Melinda always sounds exactly the same to me, but what happened to “Til You Come Back to Me” Lakisha?

    Please spare us the diva-fest…

  • star

Apparently Sanjaya’s song is Maroon 5′s “Sunday Morning” and not No Doubt’s. I won’t even begin to get into all the reasons that pisses me off.

  • t2

Yeah, it might tick you off Star, but it’s a good choice for Sanjaya.

Unless Lakisha’s song choice gets her the boot, I predict I will be losing Phil’s beautiful voice because yuk-that song-made for muzak. Why does Phil have to have such a love for all things cheesy?

  • pj

Oh, Star, I think I know why. How do you know it’s Maroon 5 and not VU or No doubt?

  • t2

eta: Looking forward to Jordin singing Hey Baby. That has the potential to be very good.

Still hoping the list is wrong on at least one prediction though…

  • pj

I hope we lose Phil :) I’ve been wanting his demise for awhile.

pj, Idol Maniac posted that it’s M5 and not No Doubt. The rumor is that Gwen didn’t want Sanjaya singing one of her songs so she made him switch. :lol_tb:

    What is VU??

  • t2

I’m not PJ but VU=Velvet Underground

  • pj

Oh, that sounds so fake to me, Star.

    My valentine, Melinda

I’m not just talking “good” or “terrific” or “swell.” I’m talking Judy Garland-great. Lady Day-great. Or … Dinah Shore … Peggy Lee … Barbra Streisand … Julie London … Aretha Franklin … Lena Horne … Gladys Knight … Put your own favorite name here.

Or, dare I even think such a blasphemous thought: Could “American Idol” even turn out another Ella Fitzgerald?

Reflexively, the answer is – no way, dumbkopf. The great ones typically have other means of career advancement beyond “Idol.” It’s called “an agent.”

But what if … what if …?

This is why one Melinda Doolittle, 29, of Brentwood, Tenn., is the single most electrifying performer on “American Idol” in six seasons.

I really hope the Sanjaya singing Maroon 5 thing is not for real. That would just piss me off…a lot.

Did you guys hear what Peter Noone said about Blake?

“He seems to be the most likely to succeed, and will. Win or lose this Idol Competition he has already done enough to move into the majors.”

I just got this quote from a comment posted at you tube. I hope it’s true. Blake has sure made an impact already! Yaaay!

  • Kirsten

LB2: And didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Sligh get the pimp spot already?

Yes. He had it the last week of Semi-Finals (week 3).

To Soul Patrol and Interested Parties,

Taylor Hicks’ JTFTW has entered Hit Predictors TOP 20 on Mainstream AC charts today
    .

New releases that tested with hit potential prior to airplay
Ranked in order of weekly BDS airplay detections,
    updated each Monday.

    SEE HERE:
    http://www.hitpredictor.com/mainac.php

I observe that Billboard tracks this chart closely because the last 4 weeks that HIT PREDICTOR had JTFTW on the chart so did Billboard.

For instance, JTFTW was for 3 week, at #25 at Hit Predictors, Billboard had the same rank for the same 3 weeks.

Am I the only one who has been trying but cannot get into chat? :-/

I believe Blake will get a record deal no matter what happens.

IMO people would be a lot less snarky towards Phil if he had a nice head of hair. He has a good voice but it’s hard to get past the dome.
He doesn’t deserve to go home yet , there are at least three who should go before him starting with Sanjaya. Sorry but he’s out of his league IMO.

  • http://www.myspace.com/sistermush dcd74

Nope Purple, I have been trying to get in chat off and on for about 2 hours now. I was thinking maybe it was just my computer as I have been having trouble with it.
I wonder if it is a gabbly issue instead.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

I love it when people cite that Sanjaya is out of his league as a reason to why he should go home. He was put there by the judges, he wants and deserves to win just as much as all the others.
Phil is boring cannon fodder who never had a chance in hell of winning this. Sanjaya will get further than him becasuse he makes for better TV.

  • Former_AI_Junkie

Wow, “Hey Baby” is a terrible song (it’s not even really song per se), like all of Gwen’s songs. What a horrible song choice.
