    Fans eat up ‘Idol’ merchandise

American Idol ratings have plateaued this season. But you’d never know from the growing interest in show-related products.
“In this year alone, there’ll be 10 million pieces of American Idol merchandise,” says Jay Deutsch, CEO of the show’s merchandise agency, Bensussen Deutsch & Associates. “And that’s booked and getting ready to ship, not what we project. It could easily be double.”…

    ‘Idol’ licensor staying busy
    Fremantle extends deal with BD&A

FremantleMedia has extended its deal with licensing agency Bensussen Deutsch & Associates, which produced more than 10 million pieces of “American Idol”-themed merchandise last year.
Deal, now extended through 2010, gives BD&A the exclusive right to manage all merchandising and sales for “American Idol” for sponsors such as Coca-Cola, Cingular, Ford and Kellogg.

Those marketing programs are an increasing part of the vast commercial ecosystem that has grown up around the “Idol” brand….

    Chinks in the ‘Idol’ armor?

    First, the young kids go.

Maybe they decide that homework isn’t so boring after all. Or maybe that show on the other channel (whatever it is?) holds a little more appeal than it did before.

Next, the teens are outta there. You know how teens are – fickle, IM-fixated, On-to-the-Next-Hot-Thing aliens from outer space…..

    Shaved head, shining career
The bald dome attracts attention, but it’s Chris Daughtry’s mind for music that’s driving his success.

“My head has become its own monster!”

Chris Daughtry, the hottest rocker in the country, is not talking about his ego. Nor is he referring to the psychological strain of being one of the fastest-selling debut artists in history.

Calling en route to a gig in Madison, Wis., the young man who famously did not win Season Five of American Idol is actually talking about the monster that is his haircut.

Much to his chagrin, Daughtry has become the hottest bald dude in the country….

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Dark Horse Presses On

…Executive producer Ken Warwick says the controversy is good for the franchise, even though he doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think Malakar will win. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The fact of the matter is, if someone on the show is getting attention, it really doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t bother me,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Warwick. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s still there, and a lot about this business is keeping people interested.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

And after misfire Taylor Hicks, the lowest-selling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ winner to date, the management team could be yearning for someone with sweeping commercial appeal. The preteen ladies already love Malakar (Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m looking at you, little Ashley Ferl). Music in its place on ‘American Idol’
As TV, the show is compelling. Is it good for pop? That’s another question.

…”They sell millions and millions of albums off the show,” Frot-Coutaz said. “That’s because they have a 19-week pre-promotional platform.”

There is no doubt that “Idol” has helped spawn successful careers; past winners Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, not to mention last year’s fourth-place contestant, rocker Chris Daughtry, have all yielded platinum albums.

On the other hand, “Idol” has produced its fair share of marketing letdowns, including past winners Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks, whose debut disc had a strong sales start in December but showed little staying power…

Reflections on a Diva Who Withers Not

…Talk about illusion. On March 26 Ms. Ross turned 63. Not since Marlene Dietrich has a pop diva staked so much on maintaining a fixed image of time-resistant, hard-shell glamour. That image is carried off much more effectively on the stage than on television. As a guest coach on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ recently Ms. Ross looked and acted closer to her actual age and sang not half as well as Melinda Doolittle, the contestà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s front-runner.

Onstage, however, she reigned. Her perfectly groomed beauty was as reassuring as the parade of Supremes hits that she performed with an efficient band and two backup singers. As long as we can sing along with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Where Did Our Love Go?,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Stop! American Idol Performance Anxiety

Unless you live under a rock, you know who sanjaya malakar is. He is an utterly untalented 17-year-old contestant on American Idol, and arguably the worst performer to get this far in the competition during the six-year history of the show. At times, he even makes the infamous William Hung look good. Under normal circumstances, smiling Sanjaya would probably be booed off the stage at a middle school musical. Sales of eggs at the local markets would likely go up every time he tried to “entertain.” So you have to wonder how he ever got on American Idol to begin with…

…Even so, all this fracas about Sanjaya now raises concerns about the future of American Idol. Do viewers really want to commit to upcoming seasons of a show if suddenly no one takes it seriously?

I am not sure if I would. But I might have a change of heart if American Idol makes some changes. Here’s what I think it should do next season:

The Sanjaya principle: Why Ron Paul can be our next president

…The something different in question is a lanky, long-haired Indian kid named Sanjaya Malakar, who, despite his lack of charisma and talent, is somehow taking this year’s American Idol by storm. More than just a passing fad, I believe Sanjaya’s unlikely success means something. A hundred years from now, I predict historians will credit him as the reason a little known Republican congressman from Texas became our next U.S. president…

Columnist glad to see decline of reality TV

I hate reality television. There, I said it. More than anything, I hate the fact that people on reality television shows will do anything for their 15 minutes of fame. More often than not, manufactured tension between two people united in their goal to get their face in the tabloids passes for drama on reality TV shows.

Once in a while, however, something happens on a reality TV show that actually carries genuine weight, be it comedic, dramatic or otherwise. Usually it involves someone actually displaying some semblance of a conscience or doing something that a kindhearted person would do. These events are rare. Other times, though, there are different reasons to tune into a reality show. The goings-on at American Idol (my least favorite of all reality shows) fall into this latter category…

There are plenty of reasons to defend Sanjaya
    Controversial à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ contestant just isn’t that bad

To hear critics talk, Sanjaya Malakarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ascendancy to the final eight on à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is a travesty, threatening the success of the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s brand name and the credibility of the musical competition. That couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be further from the truth.

Sanjaya is not the best singer in the history of the competition. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not even the best of this seasonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s finalists. But heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a disaster either. In fact, those who are looking to tear him down or use him as an example of the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s weakness need to keep a few things in mind before ranting away.

Sanjayaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not the one who put himself into the semifinals
Every time the judges rip on Sanjaya, or insinuate that he shouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be on the show, keep in mind that it wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the showà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s viewers who made him a candidate in the first place. That honor belongs to none other than the three judges; Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Simon Cowell….

Stars of South Asian descent are on the ascent

    It’s not just Apu anymore.
After years of relative anonymity, performers of Indian heritage are establishing a small but growing presence in TV and film, breaking stereotypes along the way. Mets Fans Try Out For National Anthem

Several groups and individuals gathered at New York’s Shea Stadium last week to audition for a chance to sing the national anthem at Mets games this season.

Hundreds lined up in the early morning rain while the Mets were on the road in St. Louis, The New York Times reported.

Singer-songwriter Keith Maguire, 30, had bronchitis but he showed up for the audition anyway.

“Shea obviously has two years left as the home of the Mets,” said David Howard, the team’s executive vice president for business operations. “We think many of our fans have often fantasized about being on that field either as a player or as a singer of the anthem.”

Many of the singers had previously auditioned for the popular television show “American Idol,” the newspaper said.

Cola-Cola to Jesus; “Don’t drink Coke!

…I find it amazing that Coca-Cola is more concerned with the image that they would get having Jesus drinking Coke, or rather an ACTOR in a FILM portraying JESUS than they have with the FACT that any REAL person drinking Coke has a REAL chance of becoming MORBIDLY OBESE and dying a premature death!

Coca-Cola’s marketing tactics have their logo blanked all over the most popular TV program in the World, American Idol. The couch has Coca-Cola’s logos all over it, the judges cups have Coca-Cola on them, the TV screen has Coca-Cola in the lower left of the show; the exectives have absolutely NO ethic problem marketing and selling Coke to anyone in the world, with the exception of Jesus Christ.

So, Mr Isdell, can Jesus drink Diet Coke? Dansani water or would you prefer HE drink a Pepsi. It’s just the rest of use that you want to consume your poison? Maybe you are worried that you may burn in hell for the harm that you have done to the health of mankind and think that by sparing Jesus of your sugar-laden poison that you may be sparred? I doubt it.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Singer Becomes Phenomenon
Sanjaya Malakarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Success Stuns Media Critics

If you were to ask me what roughly one in every 10 Americans has done each Tuesday and Wednesday night over the past few months, I could probably attempt a few guesses. Brushed their teeth? Showered? Masturbated? Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not like Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the most exciting days of the week. According to Nielsen, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ has averaged 35 million viewers per week this season. Sedaka celebrates 50 years, 1,000 songs

One of the songwriters from the legendary Brill Building releases Definitive Collection

…Working under several labels, including Elton John’s Rocket Records, Sedaka wrote for artists including Tom Jones and the Monkees and earned a place in the U.S. Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also dated singer Carole King, got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and saw a street named after him in Brooklyn.

These days, Sedaka said he’s still writing tunes and often sits down at the piano with his three grandchildren. He spends his time between his two homes — one in Manhattan and one in Los Angeles — with his wife and 16-year-old parrot, Echo.

Among his celebrity friends, Sedaka counts Bette Midler, Neil Diamond, Keely Smith and Elton John — and he’s keeping his eye on American Idol, on which he was a guest judge in 2003.

That season, Sedaka was excited about Clay Aiken, who performed Sedaka’s song, Solitaire, on the show. This season, he’s praising the talents of contestant Melinda Doolittle.

Asked what he thinks of Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar, an endearing but dreadful singer who somehow manages to get through each round this season, Sedaka laughed and said, “The hair is pretty. That’s all I’ll say.”

In odd way, Sanjaya win makes sense

UNLIKE THE OTHER 300 million or so Americans, I really had no opinion on maligned-yet-loved “American Idol” pretty-boy Sanjaya Malakar. Which, naturally, is why I should write a column about him.
Because it’s high time I express an opinion. Or my citizenship might be revoked.

So I finally watched Malakar do his … thing … on “American Idol,” and I’ve arrived at a deeply-pondered and researched opinion:

    Who cares?

What’s the big deal? He’s cute, he’s perky, he has a million-dollar smile and likes to pretend he’s a real character by going way out on that fashion limb of changing his hairstyle every week….

And, what do all 3 of these winners have in common? They are all signed to JRecords, the R&B arm of Sony/BMG. Don’t they give them a promo budget? It doesn’t seem like it. All 3 are very talented, and, don’t deserve being maligned by the media. If anyone is at fault, then it has to be someone in JRecords. And, R&B doesn’t have the same appeal as rock, or country genres. So, considering all of this, the 3 of them have done quite well so far.

I thought JRecords had different divisions. I thought Taylor was with the RCA part of JRecords..

All I’ve got to say in referene to the Times article and these news articles is, TPTB at AI are really showing their colors. They really do need to make up their minds. If it’s all about marketability then they have it in Sanjaya. Who are we kidding. How much better is Chris and Blake vocally to Sanjaya. If it’s about singing then they should be pushing a singer who is good regardless of whether they will bring in a million cds or not. If it ‘s the votes that count then let the American people decide who they want to win, period. TPTB at AI seem to want it all. Whatever it takes to make the show look good. They are become like the proverbial dog, his bone, and his reflection in the water, THEY want it all. Eventually they will have nothing.

I personally feel that TPTB really think the AI audience are fools. It’s not even about these contestants anymore. I am highly insulted to think that show feels I’m so stupid. It’s become more clearer with each passing article that they seriously take the American audience for granted. I’ve seen subtle hints of that attitude in past shows but this whole thing with Taylor and Sanjaya is really opening up my eyes. So now I must not only vote for who I feel is giving me the best performance week in and week out, I must also ask myself will this person who I am voting for sell cds for the AI machine? Since I’m to stupid to retain all that information during an hour long show, if I choose to continue watching the show, I will doing so just for my entertainment. I will not be voting. Not that I voted much to begin with.

IMO, AI might as well rename the show Star Search then they and the judges can pick who they feel will sell cds and fill they pockets. When the person does not go on to make them millions, they can blame no one but themselves.

Sexygirl- I agree with your comments above and have felt for awhile that AI does not really care what the American people want, enough so that I sent an email to Nigel at the end of last season when it was obvious that being the winner held little to no advantage.

I think they should rename the show to be “Top Recording Idol” (TRI).

I honestly believe that some people take this show way too seriously.

It’s an entertainment show first and foremost and anyone they can make a fast buck on, they will, Sanjaya is creating buzz good or bad it keeps people interested. The cast is chosen for the tv potential not vocal potential.

If it was to discover a great new vocal talent the competition would take place on the radio.

Although he hasn’t watched the current season of Idol – “I haven’t heard a lot of rave reviews about this year, that’s for sure” – Daughtry is still connected with the show.

    That should help the ratings….NOT.

Daughtry, who wrote much of his album, is fuzzy on his rock history; for instance, he admits to being unfamiliar with the Who

Unfamiliar with the Who? WHAT? A rock artist? Not familiar with the Who? Who are You?

You can not like the Who, but I think that if you are in the rock biz, you should be familiar with their stuff. They were pretty influential.

  • Lisa B

Each new interview he does produces a new ‘gem’ Kirsten.

    Anyone notice:

“When they first heard the album, the producers of the show said (Home) would be perfect,” he says. “I didn’t even think about it. It was an honor. This was a song I wrote on my own over a year ago. I wanted the most amount of people to hear it.”

I take it Nigel had no say then, as he professes to never having listened to the album. So which is it?

  • JJ

    Unfamiliar with the Who?

I’m sorry, there is no way someone in the music business cannot know who The Who is. There were, and are, one of the most influential rock bands of all time. I wonder if he’s heard of Led Zeppelin and The Stones.

  • Lisa B

Can’t see him going down well with the Rock crowd in the UK if he keeps giving interviews like that.

why canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t there be good press for taylor where is the critics who watchthe NY concert

I have been reading lots of wonderful reviews on Taylor and his music!

  • MaryS-NJ

I thought JRecords had different divisions. I thought Taylor was with the RCA part of JRecords..

Well, since I’ve been confused about the relationships (and I am procrastinating…) I just looked at the labels listed under the Sony/BMG umbrella. It looks like Arista/JRecords is(are?) separate labels from RCA. Taylor, Fantasia, Mario V. and Carrie Underwood are under Arista/JRecords. Daughtry, Clay and Kat are under RCA.

The Arista/JRecords labels seem more oriented towards Adult Contemporary and R&B (except Arista-Nashville) and RCA seems more oriented towards rock, although all the labels of them seem to have a range of genres represented.

It seems that RCA has a more agressive promotional department. I’m not hearing much promo for Fantasia at the moment (apart from The Color Purple), whereas McPhee is being promoted in movie theaters and Daughtry on TV shows. Does anyone know who manages Fantasia?

Former ‘Idol’ contestant holding benefit for fallen officers

Former ‘American Idol’ contestant Elliot Yamin is coming to Charlotte this week to hold a concert to benefit the two fallen CMPD officers.

Yamin will be at the 96.1 The Beat radio station’s studio on Tuesday to perform a breakfast concert to collect donations for the families of Officers Sean Clark and Jeff Shelton……

I don’t really see that much promotion for Daughtry except for what AI does and because of where his cd is at on the charts. I think Kat’s promotion is because of her marketing team. She seems to be marketed more as an image than anything else because all the exposure she is getting is not helping her cd sales one bit. Fantasia is marketed to the Urban community. I’ve heard her new single on the radio.

    Pamster,

I saw your post yesterday about Elliott’s concert in Atlanta. I am planning on going to the concert. Would you like to meet somewhere and go listen to that beautiful voice? Not a very big venue – 800 people.

  • MaryS-NJ

    Sexygirl,

I agree the Kat’s promotions are more focused on image. While I may complain/joke about the “Crack Marketing Team” at times, I think the promotions for Taylor seem to be appropriately long-term and music-focused (except for those in the press fixated on the American Idol aspect and not the music). I think it’s ironic that Daughtry wants to break away from AI for his rock cred, but seems ever more closely connected to them. I don’t listen to a lot of urban radio, so I”m not hearing much of it, but I do really like Fantasia’s album.

  • jpfan

Elliott will be performing at big Kiis/LA concert in May with Fergie, Ludacris, Robin Thicke headlining. Very big showcase for him. Alot of exciting Season 5 news today. Hoping Sanjara gets voted off this week because while he’s fun, the intense media focus on him is jumping the shark.

  • Metta

Pop will always be aggressively marketed as it has a limited shelf life on the whole.

    Excellent point.

I hope Daughtry’s comments about the Who put to rest any illusion that he is a real rock musician.

Debbi – That’s great news about Taylor and the Allmans.

Update on my In Your Time quest. I was first in line at the concession stand when the doors opened at Westbury, but it was for naught. There were no IYTs available for sale. I overheard a lot of other disappointed peeps asking about it too. I got the impression that their supply ran out – This may be why they had none in Boston when MJ inquired about them. In any case, the guy staffing the table assured me that they would be available in time for the Beacon show.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

Kirsten, is Taylor’s “The Right Place” AC ranking due to that one spin on KOST (I think it was KOST), or is it actually picking up some independent spins?

I’d love for that to be the next single…I know there are those who say “two ballads in a row is a killer,” but at this point I’d like to see Taylor marketed on what his best songs are (and I think TRP is one of them), not what the most commercial songs are. Dare to dream I guess.

So…Latin night. Jennifer Lopez. Heh. I wonder if her entire catalog will be open, or just the Latin-flavored stuff… and I see (hear?) Sanjaya singing “Maria, Maria.”

Speaking of Maria, I watched “The Sound of Music” this weekend for the first time as an adult (hadn’t seen it since I was 12 or so). It’s amazing how your perspective changes. As a kid I was all “Aww! I want to be one of the kids! They have such pretty dresses!” As an adult, I’m all “Damn…Captain von Trapp’s kinda hot!”

  • AFan

LisaB, I agree. Some people do take this show way too seriously. It is plain and simple entertainment. Let’s face it, when the new season is at like top 5 I seriously won’t give a crap about any of the season 5 people. I don’t think TPTB have any agenda except to try and make things as interesting as possible so people tune in to the show. What happens to the contestants afterwards is pretty much up to the record label. There’s no telling if an artist is going to be huge or not. I think it’s something unexplainable that, at the moment, you can’t bottle it up. I think a long time ago when boy bands and bubble gum pop was popular you could mold someone into a star. But now, the music business is so different. Anyone could surprise people and become a breakout star. Although I can’t explain it, sometimes you can just sense that someone is going to do well. Like, I knew Kat and Taylor weren’t going to be huge but for some reason I had a feeling Daughtry would blow up.

Hoping Sanjara gets voted off this week because while heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fun, the articles about him are a bore.

Bet he doesn’t though. :) This week they may put him in the bottom 3 with Phil and Haley. Will Haley really leave this week? Or will it be a shocker and Chris R or Lakisha leaves. Who will TPTB throw in the bottom 3 for effect this week? And how can DialIdol be so far off this year? Or are they? “One” of the bottom 3 each week just doesn’t jive with DI’s scores.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I like analyzing the show for the sake of analysis, though. I know it’s an entertainment show, but it does bill itself as a talent search. I do feel like a fool after least season…because I actually thought that my vote counted and that AI would promote the winner that I selected. But no, they went ahead and chose to promote/pimp their favorite, not the winner. As if they couldn’t be proud of both of them. I do feel like an idiot and a fool. For expecting more of this show.

I finally got a chance to watch last week’s performances and results show. Some observations:

Sanjaya and his family appear to be truly enjoying his fame/notoriety. I no longer feel sorry for him. In fact, I hope he stays on til the bitter end.

LaKisha should have taken Tony Bennett’s advice. If she had, it would have been a flawless performance. Instead, she ended with a whimper, not a bang.

I’ve been on the fence about Haley’s wardrobe and reaction to it. If she dresses in a similar fashion next week, I will assume that she is adopting a strategy that works for her–and is willing to take the lumps that go with this particular approach.

I wonder if any of the contestants will a perform a Spanish-language song. That would be very interesting…

  • Boulder Soul

I honestly believe that some people take this show way too seriously.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an entertainment show first and foremost and anyone they can make a fast buck on, they will, Sanjaya is creating buzz good or bad it keeps people interested. The cast is chosen for the tv potential not vocal potential.

If it was to discover a great new vocal talent the competition would take place on the radio.

WORD LisaB. Get outta my head.

Are we REALLY going to harp on someone for not being “familiar” with a musical artist? There are different levels of “unfamiliar”, peeps. I highly doubt that Chris doesn’t know who The Who is.

Hell, you could say that I am “unfamiliar” with the Beatles, because I do not know every song they ever recorded, but does that make me any less of a music fan?

  • Metta

Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s face it, when the new season is at like top 5 I seriously wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t give a crap about any of the season 5 people.

I think there’s an artificial dualism being created here. One can both enjoy the show from season to season, while simultaneously identifying a singer or two who you’d like to hear more of once his/her tenure on the show is over. I feel lucky to have found in Taylor Hicks an artist whose music I can look forward to enjoying for years to come.

Good morning everyone! I hope you all had a happy Easter (or Passover).

So Chris Daughtry hadn’t heard of The Who? Wow. That explains a lot. Ironically, that kind of thing is exactly why I started losing interest in him during Season 5. He could sing, but what kind of musician/songwriter doesn’t know who Stevie Wonder is? Or even Barry Manilow? And I’m supposed to take you seriously? And now, you don’t even know the greats in YOUR OWN GENRE? Well, my hopes for a more creative second album have just been dashed. I still like him as a person, and I like his voice, but I don’t think he will ever make the kind of music I might personally enjoy. Sigh.

I just went back and read all the articles posted over the weekend. (Thanks Lisa B!) That Time article with Simon Fuller was beyond insulting. Wow, America got it wrong, huh? We didn’t line your pockets, so we must be stupid. I am really worried for contestants this year like Melinda and Lakisha. In today’s image-conscious environment those two are facing an uphill battle for blockbuster sales. So even if they win, will Simon Fuller et al write them off? This is getting painful. I don’t want to get invested in a performer and look forward to their album only to watch them get royally screwed over by 19E, and forced to put out crap to boot. Really, if that’s the case only put the marketable ones through, and stop screaming that this is a “singing competition” at us every chance you get.

    That is all. HA!

Well AFAN, it’s clear the TPTB on AI see their audience more like you when they do all that double talking. They know that there is a core audience who are just interested in the show and all it does and that’s it. But, some of us do recognize a talent or two when they come on the show and choose to follow their careers long after their season is over, even if TPTB don’t care for them. The majority of us know what this show is all about. That’s why, I’m sure for the most part, it’s taken with a grain of salt. It just seems as that with every new article TPTB have either gotten so arrogant that they don’t care anymore. They’re either showing the American public their true agenda because they now feel they can or they do see the show’s days are being numbered and they’re trying to milk the attention for all it’s worth.

On a different but similiar topic, if everything that you guys are saying about this show being all about itself is true then that cannot bode well for someone like Chris Daughtry in the long run. He is being prostituted now by AI for the sake of helping the show build what they feel is it’s credibility in the music world. It’s all good and well know that he is being praised and receiving all this pimping by TPTB because of his cd sales. But the question is, what happens when the cd selling stops? Will Chris continue to be hyped by AI? Will he have to stick around them just so they won’t trash him in the media, ala Clay Akins and Taylor? It will not be good for him in the long run if after all this hyping of how authentic he is as a rocker, by TPTB at AI, that they turn around and tear him down once the cd sales fall below a certain mark.

Unlike Chris, AI never really praised and hyped Clay nor Taylor. They just rode their wave in media until it ceased. It really would add to the the belief that some of these contestants are nothing but marketing tools for the show if Chris next cd fails and the tidal- wave of negative press begins and AI leave him in the cold or barely defend him. Chris, out of all of the guys from last season, was/is continually being hyped by AI as the most authentic artist/rocker of last season. Will all that image be shattered once the cd sales cease?

I highly doubt that Chris doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who The Who is.

Chris: Are you a music reporter?

    Reporter: Well I should
Chris: Well then, who sang “Talkin’ ’bout my Generation”?

Afan, I was being flip and misspoke. I know Chris knows who The Who is (just as he knew who Stevie Wonder and Barry Manilow were) but still, if you call yourself a musician and a songwriter, you are supposed to have more than a passing familiarity with great/legendary artists and their music, especially in your genre. Otherwise your scope is limited, and you write songs that sound exactly like everything else on the radio. Just like Chris did. I’ve just never met a musician that didn’t know their own genre well. At least not a good one. He’s not going to get any cred saying stuff like that, IMO. But, to each his own.

I agree. I know The Who’s catalogue very well, only because it is my fave band ever and I own practically all of their albums (majority on vinyl). But I do not know the Rolling Stones or Beatles catalogues as well, and do not even own a Stones album, so it is all a matter of personal preference.

Idol may be pimping him because he has been so successful and it makes the show look good, but what do they gain financially from this? Clive is making money, Simon Cowell (through BMG) is making money, and Chris Daughtry is making money, but I don’t think American Idol itself is.

This may be why they had none in Boston when MJ inquired about them. In any case, the guy staffing the table assured me that they would be available in time for the Beacon show.

    ____

I was at the Boston show and they were selling IYT there, in fact, the person standing next to me bought one and let me look at it ( the cd sleeve is different than the sleeve on the original cd).
He bought his on the way into the venue, maybe they were all sold out by the end of the show?

Just came across this interview with Taylor. He talks about the usual stuff, but also discusses the merits of Akon, and keeping his guard up in embarking on relationships.

Metta, are you taking over Griz’s job..lol

So Chris Daughtry hadnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t heard of The Who? Wow. That explains a lot. Ironically, that kind of thing is exactly why I started losing interest in him during Season 5. He could sing, but what kind of musician/songwriter doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t know who Stevie Wonder is? Or even Barry Manilow? And Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m supposed to take you seriously? And now, you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even know the greats in YOUR OWN GENRE? Well, my hopes for a more creative second album have just been dashed. I still like him as a person, and I like his voice, but I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think he will ever make the kind of music I might personally enjoy.

See, that’s the problem. Media generated hype vs. musical authenticity..

  • Metta

maybe they were all sold out by the end of the show?

That’s probably what happened then. I feel like Ahab and the bloody whale, but I will get that damn cd no matter how many soul patrollers I have to take out in the process. lmao!

  • Lisa B

    Lol Boulder.

  • Metta

Metta, are you taking over Grizà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s job..

I think thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an artificial dualism being created here. One can both enjoy the show from season to season, while simultaneously identifying a singer or two who youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d like to hear more of once his/her tenure on the show is over. I feel lucky to have found in Taylor Hicks an artist whose music I can look forward to enjoying for years to come.

Very Funny, and just to make it even more confusing, I would add the lines that are ****

I totally agree LisaB. 19E may publicly say they are upset over the Sanjaya buzz but privately they have to be glad over the controversy. Now that Antonella is gone the only à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“buzzà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that AI is getting is over Sanjaya. Simonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s remarks about quitting were calculated to get more people to vote. Simon knows people hate him and he said that hoping to spur a voting increase. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m sure the corporate partners who paid megabucks to be associated with AI this year are not happy about the decrease in viewing and especially in voting. Remember 19E is not as interested in the quality of the product as they are interested in making quick big bucks and selling à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“unitsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .( Remember à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“From Justin to Kellyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢. That was certainly a production with great artistic integrity! :devil_tb:
The only reason we have not seen another movie venture is because that one was a flop)
19E would much rather have Sanjaya win than Melinda Doolittle. He would be the next teen star. He would be a flash in the pan and would soon disappear from sight but they would make quick bucks off off his publicity buzz. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not saying they want him to be the winner but they are not wringing their hands over him continuing on the show right now. He brings attention to the show. Melinda would be harder to market for them than Sanjaya. I think that Jordin is the one that would fit their needs right now. Win or lose, somebody will sign Sanjaya.

I usually only lurk so I just wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you Lisa B for all your efforts in keeping everyone informed.

Daughtry, who wrote much of his album, is fuzzy on his rock history; for instance, he admits to being unfamiliar with the Who

At least we know Taylor knows who The Who are as he’s playing “Going Mobile” from “Who’s Next” on his tour. I love The Who and I was lucky enough to hear Taylor sing it in Milwaukee & it was my fave song of the night. Maybe Daughtry should at least catch the opening credits of the CSI shows so he can hear 3 Who songs. I also suggest he picks up “Who’s Next,” “Tommy,” “Live At Leeds” & (my fave) “Quadrophenia.”

    emphasis mine

As I have said before, I think a lot of people are drawing the lines of causality in the wrong direction as far as the pimping of Chris goes. With the possible exception of picking Home as the boot song, I think that just as you said, Idol is pimping him because he has been successful (actually they are pimping themselves by pointing out the success of one of their own). And to answer another poster further up, if that success went south, they would stop mentioning him. If Taylor had sold a bajillion copies and was dominating radio they would be mentioning him (favorably) every chance they had. They didn’t suddenly develop a desire to help Jennifer Hudson’s career along this year. Hudson started to get Oscar buzz and they were more than happy to pimp their association. I think Idol’s primary interest is always to make the show itself look good.

Yeah, I agree with Allen…it’s not a personal thing (i.e., they don’t personally like Taylor less and Chris more); it’s a “what can you do for me right now” thing. ITA that if at this time three years from now, Taylor’s next album is a smash success and Chris’s next release goes nowhere, AI will pimp Taylor to the high heavens, and pretend they’ve been doing so all along. What pisses me off is that they treat the viewing audience as if we’re all idiots who will believe that Oceania has alawys been at war with Eastasia if that’s what they tell us. That does insult me.

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ Turns to Latin Week, Could Spell Disaster for Sanjaya

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ has brought in Diana Ross for a week of Motown, Gwen Stefani for some pop-rock beats and Tony Bennett for a dose of the American classics. Now producers are turning to Jennifer Lopez to usher in an education on Latin music to the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ pupils.

Lopez has been working with the hopefuls on the finer points of delivering Latin music to the masses and Tuesday will be the contestantsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ final exam.

While à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹American Idolà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ has already proven that ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not all about singing, this could be the week that Sanjay finally shakes himself off his supporters ballots. Malakar, who has already butchered songs in English, now takes on a Latin sound that may be a little more unforgiving. If backed into a corner donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be shocked to see Sanjaya turn to some Shakira hip shaking moves and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Rico Suaveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ lyrics to woo his faithful….

..And even more obvious is the backlash she has been receiving since winning the Oscar for not singing their praises of the show for her success..

I agree with a lot of you. It’s never been about any of these contestants. It has always been about the show and how to keep it in the spotlight.. As I said before, TPTB’s never made their agenda so clear as they are now. It just use to be conspiracy theories abound.

Easter awakenings: ‘Dreamgirls’ actress speaks of reborn career at Dome

Oscar-winning “Dreamgirls” actress Jennifer Hudson was facing a cheering throng of Easter worshippers Sunday at the Georgia Dome when something unexpected happened.

Someone handed Hudson a microphone as she walked to the pulpit and faced the audience of 30,000. The 25-year-old actress suddenly experienced a moment of stage fright. Her eyes widened in fear and she briefly edged away from the microphone.

After turning around to look at the church dignitaries sitting behind her who had already sung and prayed at the pulpit, Hudson said, “I don’t see how y’all do this.”

Hudson then proceeded to tilt her head back and belt out three spirituals that brought worshippers from New Birth Missionary Church to their feet.

She capped off the songs by telling the crowd how God had taken her from being an “American Idol” reject to an Oscar-winning actress in her first film, “Dreamgirls.”…

American Idol’s Elliott Yamin: The Shirley Kennedy Album Review

As time continued to pass with no word of a record deal for Elliott Yamin, I became frustrated. I could not believe that one of the best vocalists to ever grace the American Idol stage would not have that incredible voice heard. I worried needlessly. When I made this announcement on behalf of Elliottà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s team, that article was appended to the front page of USA Todayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Idol Chatter. MTV Babe Snags “American Idol” Hunk

Is a reality show romance brewing off the set of “American Idol?”

TMZ cameras caught MTV and possible sex tape star Lauren Conrad in the middle of a hardcore flirting session with “American Idol” stud Chris Richardson outside of Les Deux nightclub Friday night.

Moments before the two met up, LC was spotted solo on her cell phone outside the club, playfully telling whoever was on the other line, “I’m so mad at you right now, hurry up!” Moments later, the Justin Timberlake knock-off arrived, much to the delight of the giddy blonde.

The two were then ushered into Les Deux, bypassing the huge line outside, where more people recognized “The Hills” star than the “Idol” crooner.

Chris Sligh has been blogging away.

    Here are a few tidbits:
    - will be signed on August 23rd
    - 5 labels have expressed interest in him
    - will likely be a major label
    - will likely be a solo artist (that’s what the labels want, but he’s fighting for a deal for the band)
    - is writing a book
    - can play with his band for now, but cannot advertise that he is in it
    - managers are currently CAA

So, no reason to fret over the boot order (that’s my conclusion, not Chris’s).

Can someone explain to me how the Idols this season seem to be allowed out to go clubbing so much? OR is it just Chris Richardson? This is what… the second or third story I’ve read about him hooking up with starlets.

Well, I guess Taylor and Bucky were seen out and about once or twice last season, but it was much more low key. I thought they were all in virtual seclusion last season (except for Kat who snuck out to see her boyfriend).

Maybe the PTB are just desparate for more buzz – any kind.

There was also a video on youtube (has been taken down now) of my favorite (name withheld to protect the innocent. heh) performing a song with one of the show’s background singers at an LA club on Friday night.

Yeah, I agree with Allenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not a personal thing (i.e., they donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t personally like Taylor less and Chris more); ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“what can you do for me right nowà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ thing. ITA that if at this time three years from now, Taylorà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s next album is a smash success and Chrisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s next release goes nowhere, AI will pimp Taylor to the high heavens, and pretend theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve been doing so all along. That does insult me.

Well, I, for one don’t feel like I’m being played at all and I don’t feel like an idiot. I don’t think AI is trying to make fools out of people. With every passing fad the entertainment industry essentially makes fools out of the people who buy into it. Putting people with no talent over a beat and marketing their image recieving millions after millions of people buy the act.
This industry IS about making a quick buck, but it’s also about finding real talent. And the number 1 priority of any record executive of industry mogul is to make sure there artists gets a big fanbase that will buy their records, watch their videos, and go see them on tour. Money, money, money.
This is not new, it’s been like this since the beginning and it will never change. But musicians and singers know this as well. And maybe they’ll play the game, maybe they won’t, it all has to do with their personal character. If an artist doesn’t appreciate being the record labels cheap whore, then they dont have to and they can possibly achieve success in other ways… people have done it. The there are artists (like Justin Timberlake) who will play along and stay connected to that puppet string so they can follow their own artistic vision in the future. It’s different for everyone.
As for American Idol, like they care about “honoring” the winner. If the person who comes out on top doesn’t sell up to the expectations and doesn’t stay on the charts, then that’s not their fault. It really simply comes down to if the artists song is a hit. With Daughtry, “It’s Not Over” launched them to the top. Taylor really hasn’t had a single that landed yet. And that’s not TPTB at AI’s fault. They’re choosing to discuss the person that’s selling more, more. And that makes a ton of sense.

  • Lisa B

They were practiaclly under house arrest in previous years.

They also have to follow a strict ‘moral code’ and not be seen doing anything that could reflect badly on AI the brand. Seems Chris R can do as he likes, interesting.

Like a bear roused from hibernation, Broadway emerged from the winter doldrums to sense a honeyed, if troubling, shift in the spring air. First came the announcement that Fantasia Barrino would be making her Broadway debut, starting tonight, in “The Color Purple” – news broken on “American Idol” when the 2004 winner returned to perform on the show. On the heels of her subsequent appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” hits on the musical’s Web site soared from 2,000 per day to 20,000, and advance sales, which had grown anemic, skyrocketed by $6.5million.

Then NBC’s reality show “You’re the One That I Want,” created to cast the leads in the new Broadway revival of “Grease,” wrapped up its 11-week competition by crowning Max Crumm and Laura Osnes as Danny and Sandy. While the TV ratings were dismal, the musical has taken in more than $9 million in advance sales. And Broadway took notice…..

They were practiaclly under house arrest in previous years.

They also have to follow a strict à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹moral codeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ and not be seen doing anything that could reflect badly on AI the brand. Seems Chris R can do as he likes, interesting.

Sometimes an update is just an update.

All I meant to do was provide an update on what’s new with Chris S because he has many fans/interested parties here (and the added bit was just to explain why I’m not troubled by boot orders or who outlasts whom. Everybody has already had lots of exposure).

Elliot Yamin shows off worthy vocals in self-titled debut album

Elliott Yamin is the latest “American Idol” talent among Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry and others to release his own album. The debut tracks from the third-place finisher show Yamin is eager to leave his “Idol” past behind him and start “Movin’ On,” as the album’s first song indicates.

Sometimes sounding like R&B artist Usher and other times singing a soulful piano ballad a la Michael McDonald, Yamin shows his taste and musical range. But the rushed lyrics on a few of the tunes are not the best match for his voice. When Yamin tries to show off his vast range of tone, he might be compensating for poor lyrics….

Rock artist Cornell shows a palette of moods

…Some things haven’t changed for Cornell. Just as when he made his first stab as a solo artist, there’s still no contemporary pallet for the hard-rocking solo artist. Cornell might cringe at this, but perhaps the closest comparison today would be Chris Daughtry, the platinum-selling singer who emerged last year from “American Idol.”

Other than powerful voices, the comparisons end there. Sunday’s show was a reminder that, regardless of his new record’s success at retail, Cornell is one of rock’s true artists, with 10 albums, 20 years of experience and a palette of moods at his disposal.

American Idol Winners Help Valley Christians Celebrate Easter

American Idol season 2 winner, Ruben Studdard, sang to a large crowd at Northside Christian Church in northeast Fresno. He’s the latest celebrity paid by the church to perform at Easter services, in hopes of drawing in new members……

… And in downtown Fresno, another American Idol finalist visited a Valley church to help out in a benefit for victims of the Valley Freeze.

On Sunday, George Huff headlined the concert of hope at Cornerstone Church. The church sold tickets to the concert to raise money for Operation Hope which benefits victims of the January freeze…….

  • Carla D

LisaB – Thanks for posting the article about Chris Cornell. He is, and will always be, one of my favorite rock singers. I own all 10 CDs! I fell in love with his voice from his days leading Soundgarden, and have followed his career since then. Audioslave has been one of my favorite groups for many years now. I’m disappointed that Audioslave is no more, but am excited for Chris as he ventures out alone. I’m also excited that Rage Against the Machine is reuniting. Very good things are happening in the rock world right now.

Chris Daughtry lists Chris Cornell as one of his biggest influences and would be the first to tell you he’s nowhere in Cornell’s league right now. Maybe after 20 years of experience and 10 albums – who knows? I always be a big fan of both Cornell and Daughtry regardless.

Just breaking in from this Team Plaid lovefest( :wallbash_tb: )…..

(shit season 5 talk sounds good right about now)

1)Little Debbi thanks for the link. I haven’t been on much lately so its fresh to me. (with all due respect to LisaTheLinker) :smile_wp: .

2)Metta thanks to the link of Taylor’s interview at B97. Taylor knows good stuff, i.e. Akon.

3)I’m not sure where it came from but I refuse to believe that Daughtry doesn’t know of the Who. It just can’t be so. No fuckin’ way. UGH.

4)Kerri/Boulder thanks for all those great pics. That pic of JT is just so bad its good. (I miss Kerri, maybe Taylor can play Chicago more often).

Okay-back to Team Plaid. I like Blake but this fascination escapes me. Maybe you must be total fangirly like someone I know.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Dave – you did brand me the ultimate fangirl, so I’m just trying to live up to my reputation!

I’d rather talk about Team Plaid and Blake than fight over season 5… Actually I’d rather talk about warts than fight over season 5.

  • dave

Sarah was your name mentioned in my post above? I can’t find it. Now that you mention it, you are the ultimate fangirl. :smile2_ee:

  • Kirsten

Sarah: Actually Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d rather talk about warts than fight over season 5.

Do you want to be in charge of Team Plantar or the Verruca Vulgaris Vangaurd? Are we going to debate treatment or my wart is better than your wart? Can MJ set up a website for each group?

Who does Dave like from Season 6? If nobody, who does he despise the least? Who should sing what this week. Slezak at EW wants Chris to sing “Smooth”. He has suggestions for each Idol.

    Any spoilers?

I still like Melinda best. Lately, she’s been as boring as a Taylor-Chris fanwar, but her voice is still awesome and her control is amazing. Blake is number 2 for me. He is much more interesting, but his voice isn’t quite as good. Sanjaya makes me smile…so he can stay too.

  • radname

Chris Sligh is writing a book too? Why is it that theres a sudden influx of idols that think we care about their lives prior to idol? Its not really that easy to actually write a book yourself, but i guess thats what ghost writers are for

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Dave – I’m talking about the other day when you branded me the ultimate fangirl. I think it was before the Daughtry concert or something??

  • dave

Who does Dave like from Season 6? If nobody, who does he despise the least?

Kirsten-I’m not sure what it is about the cast for this season but it just doesn’t get my juices flowing. On the ladies side I like Jordin and Melida for singing and Haley for her legs. On the guys side I like Sundance, Nick Pedro and Brandon. Oh wait they were all voted off the SS Simon. I can’t stand AwPhil. He sucks and needs his eyebrows waxed off. Blake is okay, just okay to me. I actually find him kind of boring.

Shhh, Dave. You have to whisper Nick Pedro’s name so Nevada doesn’t hear you. It will make her sad.

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

AFan, good for you for not feeling like a fool, and good for you for being more experienced with the music industry. But, with all due respect, your favorite didn’t win, so you’re not seeing your favorite erased from a contest that he legitimately won in favor of someone who didn’t, but who ultimately made TPTB more money in the long run. And because this was the first year that my favorite won (and that, consequently, I cared) I really and truly expected more from the show in that they’d at least treat Taylor like the winner while simultaneously lauding Chris for his success and accomplishments. Little did I know that when faced with a winner whom 1) they didn’t want and 2) didn’t turn out to be as popular with the CD-buying public as a runner-up, they’d distance themselves from him, even going so far as to publicly announce that winning doesn’t mean anything. That actually hurt me, because I did spend a lot of time voting for Taylor, and I feel like it was a huge waste.

As for whether or not their strategy makes “good business sense,” I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. Chris’s weight right now is being carried by the radio. I’d say it makes more sense to try to drum up sales for the person who’s NOT selling so well. And again, most casual viewers have no idea what’s going on. If Ryan Seacrest announces that Taylor’s album has been certified platinum, or that he’s on a sold-out tour, probably 85% of AI’s viewers would have no clue that Taylor hasn’t SOLD platinum, or that his sold out venues aren’t hockey arenas. If anything, I believe the fact that AI is distancing themselves from Taylor probably sends out a message to the viewing public that “if AI won’t even promote Taylor’s album, it must be REALLY bad.” Which various people may personally agree or disagree with, but I think it’s bad business sense. Then again, from what I’ve learned over the past year, the entertainment industry isn’t strictly a bang-for-your-buck industry, and there are lots of personal vendettas and issues that come into play.

Yes, TPTB have made it clear several times in several interviews that I AM an idiot, for voting for my favorite, the one I thought was the most talented, and not the one who would line their coffers. At least I’ll never make that mistake again, because I won’t waste my time voting.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Yeah PJ, I noticed that Santana is with Arista. I would think he’d clear his stuff for the show – but you never know.

    Actual interview transcript:

Reporter: I really like to get to heart of the people I interview. To deconstruct them and find out how they became who they are. Let’s talk about some of the rock legends that inspired you.
Chris: I really like Boys II Men and Creed

Reporter: Well, I was thinking more along the lines of classic Rock legends. What do you think of The Who?
Chris: Well, I thought their lyrics were a bit repetitive, but I can’t disagree with their message. I mean, if their song can make the Grinch’s heart grow 3 sizes in one day, that must be some pretty powerful stuff. Plus, I wouldn’t mind trying a can of Who-Hash or a slice of that rare Who roast-beast. Whoville seems like a rockin’ place.

    PAUSE

It’s a shame season 6 isn’t better. maybe if it was, there wouldn’t be so much temptation to talk about season 5. i’m very bored with the contestants this season. Most aren’t very talented and none of them are really very interesting. It’s pretty obvious that TPTB aren’t utilizing backstories to the extent that they did in season 5, but it helps make the show interesting imo. Ideally, the contestants’ talent alone would be enough to intrigue the audience, but that’s really not the case this season at all.

Season 6, as compared to Season 5 is like todays pop music as compared to the pop music of the 50′s and 60′s…THERE JUST IS NO COMPARISON.

  • Lu

I think season 5 changed AI and they have to figure out how to adjust to the change. It changed because so many of the top 10 were signed and have cds out. Who cares if you win? At least that’s the way I see it. So now, people can go on the show and showcase their talent. Going for the win is not as important as it has been in seasons past to the new contestants because they see what happened to last year’s crew. I could be wrong but that’s what I think is different this year and I think TPTB need to do something to change it up for season 7.
Taylor is making an impact on the AC scene. Kellie and Bucky are doing great on the country charts. Chris D – wow – amazing. Elliott – #1 indie album and starting to get some pretty good play on top 40. Kat – getting great play on top 40. Paris and Ace are getting ready to show us what they’ve got… just an amazing group of contestants in my opinion.

  • dave

Nola I think today’s pop music is as good as it was when I was younger. I might have lost some hearing but I still listen to music from the same 20 yo love sick ears I had back in the day. There was good and bad back then just like today.

And I DON’T pay for any of my votes, seeing that I use a landline and voting is free. If you spend money on voting, that’s YOUR decision, not TPTB’s.

As far as comparing seasons – it’s all in the way you look at it. I like season 6 just as much as season 5. They each have their own drawing factors, and I can find plenty about season 6 that is as interesting and good as season 5. Why watch if you don’t like it? Just to bitch about it?

Anyway, I’ll go back to the season 6 cave now.

I haven’t voted yet this season, and probably won’t at all unless Sanjaya ends up in the finals, then I’ll vote for whoever is up against him. Or maybe not. I like several of the people this season, actually (Melinda, Blake, Jordin), but as a Taylor fan, I feel that the show has basicially thumbed its nose at us all by pretending that Taylor Hicks doesn’t exist. I have always had a favorite for whom I’ve voted like crazy, so it feels a little strange not to be doing that this year. But judging from the voting numbers, I am not alone. I wonder how many other people who voted for Taylor last year are not interested in voting this time around.

I think it’s just safe to say that everyone is desperate to get the focus off a contestant who has half the country hating him and has taken the season hostage.

The season is far from over, especially with the way the votes have been going. If anything, this season is way more unpredictable than any other previous one.

  • NOLA

I am not dogging Scott Savol; but the same thing happened in Season 4. Sanjaya will not win. Sanjaya cannot win. TPTB will snatch him by the BeautifulAndSexy head and pull him out of the competition before that happens. Right now, he is a huge draw to Idol and they need him. Just buckle your seatbelts. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.

    ___

Season 5 saw a lot of the idols being signed, but that won’t necessarily happen this time around.
The difference is that in season 5, the idols brought it to the table every week. They had talent AND drive. Their performances were focused and original.
The season 5 idols seemed to have a much better sense of who they were musically, whereas the season 6′ers seem to be flailing their way through the genres.

    Sarah
The season is far from over, especially with the way the votes have been going. If anything, this season is way more unpredictable than any other previous one.

    ___

I don’t think it’s so unpredictable. Melinda is the only idol who really stands out consistently voice-wise.
Sanjaya may not have the best voice, but he’s the only one I tune in to see ‘What is he gonna come up with THIS week!’
The rest of them are basically a large group of middle of the road singers. Some of them seem to have potential, but truthfully, none of them have hit anything out of the park yet, or even into the stands, or even a home run!!!
Maybe a few base hits, but that is all.
In that respect, AI has been very predictable this season. Week after week of boring suckage.

  • Kerri

I agree that Season 5 had a deeper talent pool than Season 6, but it seems the song choices have been better/different this year than in the past. Maybe it is just me.

    ___

I agree the song choices have been more current, but still sung in a boring straightforward way.
A great singer can take any song, put their own mark on it, and make it sound new and exciting.
If anyone in this crop can do that, I don’t know why they are waiting so long to show us!

  • NOLA

I hope Sligh is very successful!

  • jpfan

Nothing against Chris S. but his upcoming signing annoys me.
In theory, his album could come out before the winner and sell tons more. So why the hell are people voting? I guess the new mantra is vote for someone who has no chance in hell of being signed so they get a deal. Then hope that person is not stabbed in the back by the show who chose to support someone who comes in 4th or 6th for example. Right now AI is a reality TV variety show that needs better back stories. There really is no prize at the end of it.BTW I wasn’t a Taylor fan so no sour grapes. The show is pissing me off though.

  • AFan

Kat, I honestly don’t think winning really matters on AI. It has been proved since Clay that a runner up can do just as much with their exposure. And out of all things to play off of I think the whole “winning isnt everything” thing is perfect for AI to do. I mean, Jennifer Hudson won an Oscar for god sakes. And as much as some people don’t like it, Daughtry is at the top of the charts.
AI wants to brag and show people that ANYONE who gets on the show can become a star. My favorites from last year, Elliott and Kat came in before Daughtry and they barely mention them on the show either. I understand that it’s a numbers game and Daughtry outshines all three of the people that beat him out in that department. It makes total sense.
It doesn’t matter what place you come in, its what happens to you afterwards. Taylor did win but he clearly wasn’t the most popular contestant, he just got the most votes at the end. And I don’t think Taylor cares that he won either. I bet he wishes he could have come in 2nd or 3rd so he could have had more freedom. Maybe he’s happy that Idol isn’t talking about him as much as Daughtry.
But the thing is, if you’re going shun TPTB for not mentioning Taylor the you’re also going to have to take it up with the dozens of other media outlets and magazines and newspapers that also decided to feature Chris and not give Taylor props. Surely their not all run by the same company.

  • tinawina

I agree that Season 5 had a deeper talent pool than Season 6, but it seems the song choices have been better/different this year than in the past. Maybe it is just me.

No, it’s not just you. My take last year was great voices, great personalities, nice variety, terrible song-pickers (with a few exceptions). I think this year’s crop wipes the floor with last year’s in terms of picking songs that showcase their strengths.

    1. Taylor did win but he clearly wasnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t the most popular contestant, he just got the most votes at the end.

    2. But the thing is, if youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re going shun TPTB for not mentioning Taylor the youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re also going to have to take it up with the dozens of other media outlets and magazines and newspapers that also decided to feature Chris and not give Taylor props. Surely their not all run by the same company.

    1. Well, I’m not sure how you prove that first statement. My take was that Taylor was wildly popular, even if he had his detractors. But I don’t think we’ll ever really know that one unless 19E releases vote totals or something.

    2. I guess the difference is that TPTB actually run the contest that crowned the winner. The media doesn’t owe anyone anything, they are just going to write whatever they think makes good stories. TPTB have effectively negated the whole basis of their contest (i.e. we choose the winner and that person gets their shot) by behaving in just the opposite way. It FEELS like Chris won because they never talk about, promote, or support the actual winner. I actually would be OK with just ignoring Taylor though, what makes me mad is the open hostility towards him. And it’s really not about Taylor for me, it’s just the principle of the thing. I don’t want to see the same thing happen to my next favorite, or the one after that, etc etc. Which makes me not want to watch, vote or get invested in any way again.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

    1. No one really expected Chris Sligh and Gina to go when they did. I’d say that is “unpredictable”.
    2.

The season 5 idols seemed to have a much better sense of who they were musically, whereas the season 6à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ²ers seem to be flailing their way through the genres.

That may be true for some of them, but it is most definitely NOT true for all of them, IMO.

  • lynnie

I look at AI as like being in college. The contestants are students, some of them might win “most likely to succeed” or “most popular”, some might be voted class president, some might get straight A’s.
But once you’re out of college none of that matters.
The straight A student may never find a great job, while the guy who got C’s might strike it rich.

I see some of the fans acting like the parents who can’t let go of how well their kid did in school, despite the fact that the kid has moved on and is making his way in the real world.

The season 5 idols are all out on their own now, making their way into the big wide world, each following their own path.
They are not competing with each other.
I don’t think any of them are wasting their time looking back.
They are too busy living their lives and making the music they want to make, and hopefully they are all feeling joy and fulfillment in doing so.
That is what is important here.

“I think this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s crop wipes the floor with last yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s in terms of picking songs that showcase their strengths”

Aside from Melinda singing My Funny Valentine, name one stand out performance from this year that goes into the idol hall of fame. If by “showcasing their strengths” you mean hiding their weaknesses, they haven’t even done that. Although I guess not everyone has picked up that neither Blake or Chris can actually sing. If I could remember their songs,I guess they would be better than Hemmorhage, Moody’s Mood for Love, Taking It to the Streets, even SOTR but aside from Sanjara on British invasion nite, I’m pulling a blank.
BTW, I remember the songs from AI Season 4 better than this year’s crew so it’s not all about last season.

    First the pleasantries:

Alright, I miss you tooà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..DAVE IS HOT!!

Oh, and to your post at 4:09 I have three letters for you:

    AMA!!!!

But I’m not sure what AMA means but I’ll go with it.

    Now for this:

Why watch if you donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like it? Just to bitch about it?

I don’t really bitch about. I like watching the show because I enjoy it. I like Simon/Ryan banter. I mean it does appeal to my maturity level. I like watching Randy and his inferiority complex in regards to Simon. I like watching the contestants sing and their interactions with the judges. I love the eliminations. I thought the weeks they booted 4 each were the best episodes of the season. I miss the group numbers. Kerri mentioned that they seem to be singing better songs this year which I agree with. (I think its great that they are getting clearance on more songs. At least it seems they are).

I like watching to keep up with my friends here. I’m sappy but I think thats reason enough to watch.

I guess we all watch for our own reasons. There are more than the ones I mentioned but I figure I’ve already put a few to sleep so I will stop. I just don’t post as much because this cast just doesn’t get to me emotionally.

Well, I’d like Haley to bend over and tell me who her Daddy is.

Me too Sarah! I loved last year, but I don’t think that has to be mutually exclusive of loving this season. They both had their draw. Last year introduced me to a lot of older, great music and styles but I like how I can sing along to a lot of the songs this year. Sue me! I also adore Blake, Jordin and Melinda enough for it to overcome any problems I have with others. It’s always amusing to goof on Phil or Chris in chat. Even Sanjaya’s presence has its place.

I think I got to this point when I realized to just sit back and enjoy. It’s just a show and at the end of the day if one or two of them get further ahead in their careers, I am pleased. Hopefully, one of them is my fave.

I think picking a good song and performing it well are 2 different things.

When I think of Lakeisha’s song choices, or Jordin’s, or Blake’s, and of course Melinda… they all seem pretty savvy to me. Right in their ranges, fits the overal personalities thay are trying to display. Chris R did well British invasion night & Tony Bennett night in terms of choosing too. Gina hit her stride those same 2 weeks. Last year the only people consitantly singing things that fit them were Chris, Taylor and Elliot. Kat & Paris were particularly disappointing, Pickler was clueless, Bucky was lost… I could go on. Of course, it is all opinion.

  • sexygirl

Sorry JPfan, this Taylor Hicks fan isn’t suffering from sour grapes. As I would like to assume a lot of the others who don’t care for the way AI operate aren’t either. I just like calling a spade a spade. I’ve always thought TPTB never gave a damn about these contestants. Even as far back as Season One I noticed it. But it’s when they start telling the American audience that we are stupid because we did not pick who they wanted, then my feels turn to disdain for the show and what they are pushing. I will continue to watch because it’s sheer entertainment but these contestants need to use the time they receive on this show to further their own careers. Not buy into the belief that by winning they will receive the brass ring. They have to go after that ring themselves. Learn to use the show the way the show use you..I see Chris S has been a good student.

I think ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just safe to say that everyone is desperate to get the focus off a contestant who has half the country hating him and has taken the season hostage.

foxydonna……….you asked how many other people are not voting because of the antics of AI? Well, at our Easter dinner, at which there were 30 family and friends, out of 15 of us that actually voted last year, 0 are voting this year. Only 7 are still watching. I went out to one table and said the name Sanyaya and got bread thrown at me. For a variety of reasons, including the one you mentioned, this season has gone sour, especially for the 12-25 group. Most are turned off by what they read too, and when they found out about VFTW, that did it.

My sister is staying with me tomorrow night. She’s been boycotting the show ever since Sabrina and Sundance left (and Sanjaya stayed). I already told her that we’re happy to have her stay here but we WILL be watching idol! :) It will be interesting to see if she continues to boycott or she succumbs to the pressure. I can’t help it – I’m hooked on the show.
Honestly, I really don’t care who wins AI6. I kind of wish it would be Melinda since I have money on it but the only person I’ve voted for is Brandon and I only did that for PJ. I like Blake but not enough to join team plaid. I’ll be happy for my friends that are “plaiders” if he wins. I won’t spend money on the ai6 tour but will save it and spend it seeing some of the AI5ers tours. I did (so did all the off-shore gamblers). I had a lively debate in chat last week with somebody who insisted I was wrong about Gina going home. I find the boots are telegraphed a mile away (I think I’ve been watching Idol for too many seasons).

    It’s like one big calculation:
    - performance slightly worse than previous week but not outright awful
    - early performance spot
    - meh comments from judges (too nice or too mean gets you votes)
    - meh song
    - boring backstory
    - bad outfit
    - past appearances in bottom 3
    - not much buzz
    - not connecting with the audience

Add up all the factors (weighted on the degree of each element) and you have your result.

I dont post a lot here but I read a lot and I enjoy the talk of Idol past and present seasons. If MJ wants us to talk only current then I would follow that wish..it is her blog after all but if she is ok with just Idol talk..I am a happy camper. I have read the guidelines before someone points them out to me..lol! A lot of the articles posted are about last season contestants so naturally talk about last season stems from reading the articles imo. I enjoy reading everyones views on the different subjects and LisaB your links are the best!!
About American Idol and TPTB….IMO..if you are going to have a show and a winner and let the public pick the winner then you need to act HAPPIER than a Pig in shit..about the person chosen…WINNING should mean something..if it doesnt then why have the contest at all?? And I hate being told that I didnt make the right choice based on CD sales..puhlease..music is about more than sales..and that is where TPTB differ from the viewing audience..they want a big money maker…we want who we love and who moves us! I think we got it right last year and TPTB can kiss my potooey!! Hushing now.

  • MaryS-NJ

About Sligh, I really doubt he will be making any record as a solo artist until after August 23rd and the tour. At that point I suppose he could whip something together quickly, but I get the impression that he is more like Taylor in that he wants to be true to his artistic sensibilities and will want to take his time.

So, I can’t believe Sligh would be on the Idol speed course to get a record out 5 or 6 weeks after the tour ends like the winner will be. Unless… he has been made an offer by a division of Sony/BMG which probably has right of first refusal. I think Kellie started recording before season 5 ended (for one of the labels under the Sony/BMG umbrella) but didn’t release until after the tour was over.

Re: voting… I was a newbie to American Idol last season, got into it with great gusto and didn’t regret a single vote. However the PTB do not appear to value my contributions, do not respect last season’s winner and can’t resist rubbing it in.

Except for some votes for Chris Sligh (on behalf of steve-o), I’m happy to sit this season out. It’s nice not to get upset with worry about my favorite.

American Idol is now a means to an end for me. The end is something to chat about with my MJ buddies. :wub_tb:

season six is great. the only difference on the blog is there is not a guy for some of the obsessive fangirls

With all due respect, I think that it is legitimate to comment that not all seasons of AI are created equal.

I can and have said that I think that the Family Edition of The Amazing Race was awful without being accused of having some obsessive complex with a contestant from Season 7. I’ve said that Season 5 of Friends was better than either Season 3 or Season 10 while not having any attraction to Emily (in fact, I did not like her at all after the wedding). And, I say that ER was better back in seasons 1-5 without being told it is unhealthy for me to fixate on Dr. Greene.

This blog is not unique in saying this season is not the best. Commentators from MSNBC, USA Today, EW, etc have all said the same. Even Mr. Chris Daughtry bashed this season in an interview and he can not be convincingly accused of being fan-girly about that guy.

While I agree that we should not focus on that guy (that is not the scope of this blog), I believe that it is possible for people to think that this season is not so great and yet still be mentally healthy people. One does not preclude the other. Certainly, people who are not a fan of that guy have stated here that they think this season is not so great, so it isn’t just one group.

Vive la difference and all that. I do not think this is the best season of AI, but I’m enjoying it none the less. It does not hurt my feelings that others do not like this season.

And, I think that Blake is pretty gosh darn cute and I think some could get fangirly about him. So, don’t write off this season’s guys too quickly.

  • sexygirl

season six is great. the only difference on the blog is there is not a guy for some of the obsessive fangirls to get their panties in a bunch over.

From what I see there are three guys for fangirls to get their panties in a bunch over. The question is do these guys have the right stuff to keep their attention? I’ll leave the answer up the individuals..

it is a tv show. dwelling in the past is unhealthy. and if you like it so muchà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦go watch reruns and save the rest of us the redundancy.

Well, I’m sure TPTB from this tv show is happy we are even discussing it, past, present or future.. Ratings is the name of the game with AI. If talking about how it has evolved, good or bad, as a show keeps us watching, then that’s all that matters..

Hey purple, I have the keys to the MySpace and have been slacking! I’m sorry – I got you added though. I had the thing privatized while I got it all setup but I made it public now, so anyone that wants to friend it is welcome:

    http://www.myspace.com/teamplaid

I don’t really intend to do much with it, I just thought we should have one. :lol_wp: I’ll put all of MJ’s peeps in the top friends, hee!!

Off to catch up on the rest of the thread.

  • Stefunny

I do think TPTB will sign the boy wonder.
    The tweens love him.

Everyone keeps saying this but I see no evidence of this. My 8 y/o (early tweener) and her friends think he is silly. The 12-18 y/o girls on the discussion board I moderate think he is ridiculous and needs to go home yesterday. Sure this is anecdotal but I’d like to know where people are getting the idea that he has the “tween” vote.

Yeah it’s pretty sad when you get frustrated and decide to just quit talking about the CURRENT season of AI because every time you do, you get shot down and told that this season isn’t as good as last one, yada yada yada.

    It gets boring. *yawn*

  • cateye

Sarah, great Daughtry recap–AND Go Team Plaid!!!!!!!!!!

I am living in the past….reminiscing about what could have been if Sundance, Tami Gosnell, Castro and, of course, Nick Pedro had gotten further…..

The auditions are filled with judging cruelty, but it also introduces me to some great voices…..Tami and Castro being two….so, I can’t be tooooooooo snarky about AI since I do get something out of it…

Again, if Nikki McKibbin with her awful voice can get as far as she did, I don’t see why Sanjaya can’t…

I am really not hearing what everyone else likes about Chris R…..color me Plaid….

  • dave

I must be stoopid or just immune. No it must be me being stoopid because I really don’t see much of the my idol is better than your idol stuff going on.

I like this season for what it is. I made a comment that I didn’t get the Blake lovefest. He’s okay but c’mon now. I even mentioned I preferred season 5 talk to this Blake-love. Just my opinion. BFD. I don’t post much because I can’t find anything that motivates me about season 6…… UMMM…Lost my train of thought. (Which I think is a good thing that I did).

I like the show for the show and I suppose if I can’t abide by MJ’s guidelines I will try not to post.(I’m sure my will power will last as long as teen age boy with the head cheerleader) :annoyed_tb:

  • bean99

I just read all of the pages and was sorry I did (other than Team Plaid posts, of course). I know not everyone is enjoying season 6 but it gets a little old reading about how boring it is at every turn. Some of us like it. I find season 5 boring now, or at least the same old same old.

    Team Plaid! :smile1_tb:

Kirsten, yes it is, and thanks for asking :smile2_tb:

Dave – I already said I’d stop with the Blake fangirly shit since it seems to bother people.

  • bean99

Don’t stop Sarah. Blake fangirly types have as much right here as the rest of them.

Dave, I don’t post too often either, because, like you, I find season 6 extremely uninspirational. I don’t get the Blake-lovefest either, but, to each his/her own. I’m not sure if this year is worse than season 3 or not. I see some striking similarities between the 2 seasons. We had John Stevens (Sanjaya) the 3 divas, (Melinda, Jordin and Lakisha) I don’t see the spunk from these 3 that drove Fantasia to the win. Whether you like her or not, that girl has tons of personality, not so much so from this year’s top divas.

  • platinumgray

is the sitcom christine hinting that Taylor hicks might come on the show..today on the show christine admits she has a fantasy date and it’s taylor hicks lol woooooooooo..i have fantasies like that to lol
great opprotunity for taylor to pop up as her date for real(on the show real )

Chris Sligh said in his blog that if he had survived to this week, he’d be singing “Smooth” by Santana.

  • http://www.myspace.com/sistermush dcd74

So…let me get this straight. First there was not nearly enough season 6 discussion going on. People are getting into the season more since the theme nights have started and NOW there is TOO much Blake discussion? Last time I checked he was involved in season 6. Tough crowd, I tell ya!

  • bean99

There’s never too much Blake talk, Dcd. :laugh_tb:

  • pj

Well, I hate to break it to some of you, but Wednesday is Blake Lewis day in his hometown of Bothell, WA. I plan on celebrating. :tongue1_tb:

  • MaryS-NJ

    I love Smooth. Sigh.

it is a tv show. dwelling in the past is unhealthy.

Nah, it’s fun – within reason. I loved season 5 passionately. I like season 6 casually. Season 6 is different and I can enjoy it without any emotional investment, but season 5 is my first Idol love, will never be forgotten and will always be my favorite.

ETA: Plaid makes the man. But only if he has a really nice caboose.

  • KTINTN

    Platinium –
Didn’t Taylor mention in a recent radio interview that talks about him appearing in front of the camera were going on? And he was not at liberty to say any more than that?

    I wonder ???

  • http://www.idolicious.com Kat

I guess the difference is that TPTB actually run the contest that crowned the winner. The media doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t owe anyone anything, they are just going to write whatever they think makes good stories. And ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s really not about Taylor for me, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just the principle of the thing. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t want to see the same thing happen to my next favorite, or the one after that, etc etc. Which makes me not want to watch, vote or get invested in any way again.

Thanks, tinawina, for putting it so much better than I ever could :-)

I imagine that it’s tough for someone who’s not a fan of Taylor to stand in a fan’s shoes…maybe the mentality (and I’m not trying to put words in anyone’s mouth, but I’m trying to draw on my own experience) is something like “how can anyone care so much about someone who sucks?” But for those of us who really do think that American Idol found an artist, not a karaoke mouthpiece, it is rather disheartening to see him kicked to the curb for the assembly-line rocker…even if, deep down in our hearts, we knew all along that’s what would happen.

I agree that Season 5 had a deeper talent pool than Season 6, but it seems the song choices have been better/different this year than in the past. Maybe it is just me.

I agree there’s better music this year but I don’t agree about the talent. This year has a lot of talent but the contestants lack charisma. Season 5 had mostly charismatic contestants. Is charisma contagious?

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

PJ – you succeeded in making me smile :)

I’ll bring chess squares to the party!

  • pj

Sarah, great! I’ll make sausage balls. It will be cool when Blake makes top 3 and they go to his hometown ;)

Although I guess not everyone has picked up that neither Blake or Chris can actually sing. If I could remember their songs,I guess they would be better than Hemmorhage, Moodyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Mood for Love, Taking It to the Streets, even SOTR but aside from Sanjara on British invasion nite, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m pulling a blank.

I doubt I’ll ever pick up on that Blake or Chris can’t sing. That’s a subjective opinion. I even think Sanjaya has some talent. I really like Blake’s voice. He can do amazing things with it and I don’t mean just beatboxing. I don’t particularly like Chris R’s tone, but I recognize that he can sing. He actually did a fairly good job this past week, even if it pains me to admit it.

ETA: I also remember all of Blake’s songs, from Keane to Mack to the Knife.

  • bean99

    I’ll bring the beer. :drunk_tb:

  • maracaibo

Blake can really really sing, he even belted out on Mack the Knife.
    JMHO.

I have njoyed each one of his songs. From Top 24 until now.
    List:

Somewhere only we Know (great vocal, I loved his stage presence that night, that’s when I fell for him)
Virtual Insanity ( Great performance, cool dance moves, HOT falsetto in the end…)
All Mixed up ( HOT HOT performance, great voice and sexy moves)

Keep me Hanging On ( Very Smooth)

Time of THe Season (His BEST performance IMO, Wow!)
Love Song. ( Slow song but GREAT controlled VOCAL)
Mack the Knife (Strong vocal, even though that theme didn’t go quite well with him but he did the best he could. Good job)

Overall I would give him a 9.5 /10 Total for his performances
Once Top 3 night comes along I am sure I will give him a 10/10.

By the way Srah, now that Chris Sligh is gone I am hoping Blake is the one who sings SMOOTH by Santana. That would be HOT!

    GO TEAM PLAID!

  • sammy

Blake and Melinda are my favorites this season. I look forward to their performances. Truth is,however, I probably won’t follow them after the season ends. Not invested in them.

Then NBCà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s reality show à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢re the One That I Want,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ created to cast the leads in the new Broadway revival of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Grease,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ wrapped up its 11-week competition by crowning Max Crumm and Laura Osnes as Danny and Sandy. While the TV ratings were dismal, the musical has taken in more than $9 million in advance sales. And Broadway took noticeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦..

i recently learned that a friend of mine has been cast as frenchie. from what i saw of the nbc show, she’ll blow danny and sandy away.

  • cat

I think that all of the season 6 contestants can sing, and sing very well. IMHO, the problems is not vocal ability (even Sanjaya), it is the fact that most of them are rather tentative. They seem to approach their vocals with less committedness than contestants (not all certainly) in other seasons. That would not be true, of course, for Lakisha who attacks her songs with all the sensitivity of a pit bull.

They don’t lack intonation for the most part, they lack dynamics. They either beat the song to death from beginning to end or don’t even give it a friendly shove. My favorite songs to sing in public involve a soft part, a punch in the middle, and a big finish….that gets the crowds attention. Even if you aren’t a flawless vocalist, a song with dynamics makes people think you are.

Melinda has excellent dynamics and control, but she has no personality dynamics.

You may not always need a glory note, but you have to change it up a bit…give it a boost, a build to a big finish…or something to take it from “that’s a nice song” to “WOW”. There just isn’t much “Wow” going on for this group.

    YMMV as always.

  • RollTide

I plan to celebrate Blake Lewis day by going totally fangirly. Oh wait, I already am. :D

And for those of you that don’t get the Blake love, that’s alright. That less of you we have to share him with. ;)

  • t2

Chris Sligh singing Smooth? I am very grateful his vibrato never got hold of that song. Whew!

  • Little Boy Blue

is the sitcom christine hinting that Taylor hicks might come on the show..today on the show christine admits she has a fantasy date and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s taylor hicks lol woooooooooo.

For those who missed it, the conversation went something like this …

The New Adventures of Old Christine

Julia Louis Dreyfus (of Seinfeld fame) is with a guy she really wants to date and starts telling him that she is dating another guy because her friends and family told her to stop having fantasy relationships and live in the real world.

The guys asks her,”so who are you having this fantasy relationship with?”

She looks at him and says “Taylor Hicks“!!

Oh BTW, some of you might not know this, but both Jason Alexander ( George Costanza in Seinfeld ) and Julia Louis Dreyfus are both excellent singers.

Listen to Julia perform the song — SUMMER SAMBA ( SO NICE ) here :

Melinda has excellent dynamics and control, but she has no personality dynamics.

What do you mean by personality dynamics? Rewatch her “I Got Rhythm”– the judges were 100% on that one; it’s a vocal and performing masterclass.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah
