Michael Johns performed his single “Heart on My Sleeve” at the Fresh 102.7 studios in New York City this morning.

Fun fact: The tune was co-written by singer/songwriter James Morrison. No wonder that, despite some overproduction, I dug the song when I first heard it! Love, love James Morrison…

Michael is Manhattan promoting his new album, Hold Back My Heart, released everywhere today.

Well MJ I am find it interesting that you find HOMS is somewhat overproduced, an opinion to which you are of course entitled.

I think one of the reasons I really love the song, besides the way it is structured musically, and the lyrics, is precisely because I can hear that incredible voice loud and clear but maybe I’ve just been subjected to too much Nickelback and other extraordinarily overproduced music, Britney, etc. We all likely have differing opinions as to what is overproduced or underproduced or just right, bwah.

But James Morrison certainly has this way of structuring a song that just gets into your brain, and your heart, bwah.

I think but without having the album in front of me, which is not available in Canada yet, pout, July 14th apparently we have to wait, that John Shanks is either the other co-writer on that song or a producer on that song- as in Miley Cyrus, The Climb John Shanks. Which is actually a Miley Cyrus song I like. I have tried not to, honestly I did. But I love the lyrics especially.

    MJ certainly looking fine.

Oh, gees. Michael is still so cute. I forget how gawgeous he is until I see these video clips.

  • whyso

I’m way bummed out by this album he put out. Half of it is old stuff and the other half just sounds like old stuff. SOOOO BUMMED.

It really does pay to win or come in close and get signed by a major label because of the access you get to professional producers. Writers are hugely important too but it seems like they work with all different acts (big and small) but it seems like producers and production is what you get from the big labels.

Oh yeah and fresh photo shoots. Come on with the album cover it’s like 18 months old! Does he even play the piano much less play it on the album.

And that may explain why I don’t dig it much. And that one song by James with Nelly Furtado just doesn’t stop playing here… I can’t stand it.

But I’ve listened a few songs from MJ’s album and I enjoy some. I’m not a big fan of his, but he’s not bad doing that retro sound.

  • weareallinnocent

After listening to the streamed preview the other day, I’m not a fan of the album. But, FYI, I was over at Amazon perusing new music and they have HOMS as a FREE mp3 download. So what the heck…

This may be old news, but if not, there ya go~

It really does pay to win or come in close and get signed by a major label because of the access you get to professional producers.

It really pays to win for a lot of reasons. Including the powers of promotion that a heavy-hitting label can bring. As far the writing and producers that winners get? That’s more of a mixed bag for me. Sure the winners get a lot of talent, but major labels and Idol can tend to play it very safe.

Had Michael won, I have no doubt, it would have been corporate rock with a little soul sort of album. Probably would have been a lot better in terms of sales and fame, but I’m not sure I would have cared for it as much as what MJ did on his own. Yeah, he is playing to a niche, but since I am in that niche (love, love, love soulful singer-songwriters with husky voices) I’m personally grateful to see the less commercial effort.

Having listened to the CD a second time now, I really like it.

  • weareallinnocent

It’s growing on me a little, going back and listening to some of the favs noted by some of you. Thanks for the nudge…

But I finally figured out where it derails for me. It seems a little too Lyle Lovett wannabe to me. Granted, the soulful, bluesy MJ is the one that appealed to me on AI7 — yes, the one song lol — now he seems to fall a little short for some reason. Maybe it is the production, or maybe I simply prefer Lyle being Lyle….

  • auntieaimee

Yes! I definitely hear Lyle Lovett in his voice. So much so, that I put a bunch of Lyle on my Ipod yesterday because I hadn’t listened to it in a while. That’s funny that someone else thought so, too. :) I’m not a huge “country” person, but I love Lyle!

  • I want pizza

I didnt like all of it at first but the more I listen to all the tracks the more I like them. Its a very solid album IMO, not sure how it’ll sell but its good material. Congrats to Michael :)

  • Dr. Tracey

Love the song. I should check out the rest of the album I guess.

  • kbr

Thanks for giving this it’s own space MJ. I love this interview with Michael and his performance. I think I like this song acoustic rather than the album version, luckily that’s how he usually performs it at these little gigs so we get to hear it plenty. The album is definitley worth a listen, maybe even a couple. I am a diehard fan and it took me a couple to get into it. I don’t love all the songs, but there are some really great ones on there worth a purchase. Me, I bought the whole thing, but there is a pretty good variety of peppy vs slow songs that most people could find something they like IMHO.

  • lavender1960

Not catching the Lyle Lovett comparison at all but I am not too familar with his music. I think of MJ as having a voice somewhat like Robert Palmer, because of the vibrato. Palmer’s vibrato was more prominent and he could do rock and soul and R & B. He is one of my all time favourite male solo artists and loved his work with the Power Station.

But I did like what the reviewer from USA Today said, he thought one of the tracks on Michael’s album reminded him of the Spencer Davis Group, which I consider high praise – harking back to Mr. Steven Winwood – love love that man’s voice and now I feel the need to buy some Steve Winwood too, he’s been touring with Mr. Clapton of late.

    Yes I love soulful voices.

And the reviewer from USA Today confirmed that HOMS is co-written by James Morrison and John Shanks.

  • Kiska12

Number 21 on iTunes. Not bad!!! Congrats to Michael!

  • heart2

Not getting the Lyle Lovett..but what ever. I have not been able to stop listening to his CD all day. Just love that rich soulful voice.
    Congrat’s Michael..great job!!

  • Laurie

Awww Michael, I am so happy for you! Congratulations. I really didn’t become a fan until I saw him on the AI tour. He was awesome live. I like the song and I will be buying the record. Does that make 7 of the top 10 from season 7 with a record deal? If so, that is very impressive.

I’ve been listening to the full tracks at aolmusic free listening stream since I’m from the Philippines and the album is still not available at our local music stores.

I’m loving the soulful rendition of every song,I’m definitely buying this one. :biggrin_wp:
