From MJO:

Season 7 buddies, Michael Johns and Brooke White are set to hit the road together in August.   Michael is currently promoting his album, Hold Back My Heart, and is getting ready to premiere the video for the single “Heart on My Sleeve”.

Brooke’s album High Hopes & HeartBreak drops digitally July 14 and will be available everywhere July 21. She just released “Radio, Radio”, the first single from the disc.

Both albums were produced by David Cobb (Chris Cornell, Shooter Jennings).   Earlier this year, Michael and Brooke recorded the duet “Life is OK” for the soundtrack to the Shaun White documentary, Don’t Look Down.

I’ve heard Michael Johns’ album, and it’s very pleasant. He’s got a soulful, sturdy voice.

But I regret to say the music just isn’t all that special. It’s certainly fine, very palatable, but nothing stuck in my mind and made me want to play it again and again. I think that was mainly due to the original material — the new tunes just aren’t that memorable.

I actually, truly, hope I’m in the minority on this. He seems like a neat guy, and I wish him all the best.

Oh my god holy @$@%# I’m so excited! I’m TOTALLY gonna go see them at the Glasshouse! Saw David Archuleta there and it’s awesome. That’s besides the point.. I LOVE THESE TWO SO MUCH!! Season 7 will always be the best for me! AHH I’ll be going to their first show! MAN this pairing is too good to be true! *man squeal*

  • lilpinktink

edit: please keep the thread on topic.

Oh and to clear up confusion, the whole record will be available on iTunes next Tues! As well a free download of the “radio radio” video :)

I must say I am disappointed because I wanted to see Brooke tour with Jason Castro. Michael is a nice guy, but… it doesn’t matter because their concerts are scheduled on the West coast.

  • Jolene

I must say I am disappointed because I wanted to see Brooke tour with Jason Castro.

I also always imagined Castro pairing with Brooke to tour, but right now it looks like Brooke and Michael’s careers are on par – both are Indie, their albums release fairly close together, and they worked with some of the same people. For Castro’s sake, I’m hoping his Major label status shows in his promo, airplay and distribution. If it does, he might just have better options for his first tour than co-headlining a small venue tour with a fellow Idol.

  • adamlover

i really like michael johns but was never a brooke white fan.

  • lavender1960

Well it goes without saying since Jason was fortunate enough to score a major label deal AND he is no where finishing an album to promote, that he was not going to be touring with any of Season 7 mates. Interesting however that he didn’t go the 19 route – whether he was offered I can’t remember – which may in fact be the best move he ever made. Lest we forget Kristy Lee Cook scored a major record label and I am not seeing the tour announcements. But then again I see Kellie Pickler’s career and scratch my head.

Independent artists gotta do what they gotta do. And given the duet Brooke and Michael did together for the soundtrack he cowrote, they clearly sound great together and hopefully will they throw that duet into their concerts – that should have been a single, perhaps still will.

I always liked Brooke but she just lacked confidence, but as we have seen when the Idols are out and able to do their own thing they thrive. Maybe not as commercially successful as the folks on the 19 train but they are much happier doing their thing on their terms.

To me Brooke and Michael have unique voices, compared to what is out there and that is usually what independent labels offer, unique artists who don’t fit into the cookie cutter of the major labels.

  • lavender1960

PS I would also add that Jason is also very unique so I was surprised he was able to score a major label deal – just hope they treat him right or don’t try to change him too much.

  • Sunshinegirl

AWESOME! They’re coming here too! MUST GO! Do we know how to buy tickets yet?

  • Sunshinegirl

LOL…lostsa use of the word “heart” between those two, ain’t there? :)

  • lavender1960

Darn when are Brooke and Michael coming out East? How about North East? How about Ontario Canada?

  • kbr

I was so excited…then I saw no east coast shows. I love Brooke and Michael so I really hope they are able to make the trip out here. My guess is if everything goes well on the west coast they will add more dates and venture east. Get out to those shows west coasters!!!

  • Mtlfan

Good pairing! Brooke and Michael were 2 of my fav last season!

  • hardkandy

    good luck to them :)

    Brooke is awesome!

too bad I can’t see any of these shows.. :(

  • Jolene

Interesting however that he didn’t go the 19 route – whether he was offered I can’t remember – which may in fact be the best move he ever made.

19 has first right of refusal, which means the fact Jason isn’t with 19 indicates he wasn’t offered a deal with them. The right to refuse is 19′s, not the contestant’s.

Lest we forget Kristy Lee Cook scored a major record label and I am not seeing the tour announcements.

Well, she flopped hard and lost her deal before you could say “15 minutes of shame”, so it’s no wonder there was never a tour – Major labels hate throwing money away.

that should have been a single, perhaps still will.

Completely agree. That was the most radio-friendly and catchy song I heard from either of them. Too bad it’s not on either album (making the chances of it being a single much slimmer).

  • lavender1960

Hopefully this is just the first leg of the tour…….given it is West Coast centric.

  • canadiandcfan

@ lavender1960 … we’d be at least two!! i’d definitely make my way to ontario to see these two perform. i’m sure this is going to be a fantastic pairing. excited to see some footage/ reiews of this one :D thanks for the info mj!

  • 2dogs

This is good news. I love them both. They are not exactly coming to my backyard, but this may be a good road trip. In today’s economy, I ‘m not sure how many more chances I will get to see them live — much less performing live together.

I think Radio Radio is very catchy – I can’t get it out of my head. I like Heart on My Sleeve, but I do think that Michael may have done better with Life if Okay to promote as a single.

  • http://twitter.com/cara_lee pj

I haven’t bought MJ’s album, but I’d go see him and Brooke live if they were coming to Chi-town. Alas, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

  • tinawina

They’re not coming anywhere near me.

    **pouts**

  • houstonrufus

I would definitely consider going to see them if they came to Texas, but it sounds like that’s not in the cards. I like both of them very much. Really like Castro, too. Great to see them all recording and working.

  • sma11ie

This makes sense to me. I would totally catch their show if they came by me (they aren’t for now). Still have no desire to buy MJ’s album, but I like him, and think he’ll put on a good live show with Brooke (who I like even more).

    8/22 – Seattle, WA @ Chop Suey
    8/23 – Spokane, WA @ Knitting Factory

    DC’s tour

Aug 23 (Sun) 8:00 PM (Yakima, WA)
    THE CAPITOL THEATRE
Aug 25 (Tue) 8:00 PM (Spokane, WA) **UNCONFIRMED**
    THE KNITTING FACTORY

Aww, looks like they’ll just miss each other.

  • julesb2183

yeah! they are coming to SLC!

  • sma11ie

Why is Brooke’s album available digitally for a week before the physical release? I wonder what that accomplishes, strategically/from a marketing perspective.

  • SpleegsKeegs02

Why isn’t it Michael and Carly? Marly!! I think Michael is awesome but I really didn’t like Brooke in any way on the show, I thought she was the worst honestly. But hey, at least Michael’s got a tour.

  • SpenserJ

I haven’t bought MJ’s album, but I’d go see him and Brooke live if they were coming to Chi-town. Alas, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

From what I’ve heard so far, MJ’s album doesn’t appeal to me. I adore Brook, so I would probably go see them if they were hitting my side of the country. I’m meh on Michael, but I could probably enjoy him enough to make it worthwhile to see Brooke.

  • hardkandy

Why is Brooke’s album available digitally for a week before the physical release? I wonder what that accomplishes, strategically/from a marketing perspective.

    yeah I don’t get it either…
but I’m just excited to hear it sooner rather than later :)

  • brie200

I said this before, but while I do think they make good tourmates and I would likely enjoy a show by these two (though Brooke more than MJ), does it bode well for Brooke to be touring with a guy whose album essentially flopped? I get they are indie artists and I’m happy both are working, but I’m not entirely sure MJ is going to be putting butts into seats.

I also don’t understand why Brooke’s album comes out digitally before the hard copy.

  • Ladybug

I would definitely go see this one if it came nearby. Maybe these few dates will test the waters and they will add a few more? Hope so.

  • sma11ie

Why is Brooke’s album available digitally for a week before the physical release? I wonder what that accomplishes, strategically/from a marketing perspective.

Heh, I’m speculating on my own question. I remember an article about how iTunes ads mostly aren’t bought, but negotiated– you give them an exclusive or special pricing, and you’ll get an ad. I’m thinking that might be why. Brooke has sold well on iTunes before, and I saw she had an ad for Radio Radio for a while, so I think an ad for the album is what she got in exchange for the one-week exclusive. I think it makes sense.

  • Jolene

Why is Brooke’s album available digitally for a week before the physical release? I wonder what that accomplishes, strategically/from a marketing perspective

Well, unless they set out to ensure she sells less her opening week, this accomplishes nothing. I’m pretty sure her opening week will now be weaker than MJs, since it will be based solely on digital sales. By the time her album hits the stores a week later, the digital sales will have already had the 2nd week decline.

does it bode well for Brooke to be touring with a guy whose album essentially flopped? I get they are indie artists and I’m happy both are working, but I’m not entirely sure MJ is going to be putting butts into seats.

I’m not sure either one of them is very marketable right now, but at least as tourmates they are on even footing, it seems. If MJ was touring with someone who sold a lot more albums then him, he might have to be the opening act rather than a co-headliner.

  • lavender1960

I have seen this done before, I can’t remember who the artists were now but I think this is becoming more common though yes it does not make sense from a record keeping perspective.

Certainly artists are allowing full previews of their albums online before the physical album is out which in this day and age of people figuring out how to capture that stuff is risky. So better to get the listeners to pay for it. I do notice however that they tend to make sure the quality of those previews are not up to the CD quality. Then again I think digital isn’t as good as CD anyway. I am one of those people who will download and buy the CD of my faves.

I believe the notion is to develop buzz and it is looking like many retailers made decisions on what physical albums to stock based on digital sales, or at least in the case of independent artists.

  • lavender1960

I suspect that MJ would be more than happy to be an opening act with a great headliner but if you can’t get that gig, as there are only so many spots in any given year, and I get the sense that not as many artists are touring this summer for example [looking at the summer festival rosters is indicating that to me] – but that is often just a function of when albums are released etc more so than the economy though the economy may have affected the venue selection and length of some tours. I wonder though if people are holding off releases due to the economic situation.. All the people releasing albums during the Jackson domination of the charts are wishing they had.

So the only thing you can do it get out there and plug away until such opportunity arises.

Most people just don’t step off a show and pack stadiums. Even Cook, Sparks and Daughtry haven’t reached that level yet, not as headliners. Basically aren’t Kelly and Carrie the only Idols packing stadiums? I can’t remember, did Kelly and Carrie start as headliners or did they open to start too, didn’t Carrie open for Brad Paisley?

Most artists and bands have been several years in the trenches before that happened and any artist or band will tell you, just get out there and perform live as much as you can. MJ has been keeping busy with one off gigs since he was eliminated but indeed without a major hit it is going to be a slog. But I think both Brooke and MJ would say beats working 9-5 like the rest of us stiffs. If you believe in your music, just keep out there plugging away and maybe that next break will happen – won’t happen sitting at home and moping.

Now there is a rumour that David Foster is going to do more than just a one off concert for Foster & Friends but mount an actual tour and that MJ is on the roster. I have not been able to find any more details but that would be in the fall I believe.

  • 2dogs

I love Michael, but I think that Brooke will be the bigger draw here. Her two singles have sold very well on iTunes and she seems to appeal to a wide range of folks. That being said, I’m not sure if she was flooded with offers for more high-profile touring partners and I think that she and Michael compliment each other very nicely and will put on a great show. Even though Michael’s album did not sell well, it was well received by critics (rightly so IMO), so it didn’t flop in terms of quality. If this tour goes well, and her album is successful, I think you may see Brooke branch out to do something of a higher profile later in the summer.

My only sour note is that their nearest stop is 3 hours from where I live.

  • kbr

Michael just did an interview on a radio station in Ohio and he said if the tour goes well they will be adding east coast dates. He also said there is potential to add more west coast dates as well, so all is not lost for Brooke and Michael fans hoping to see them live further east.

  • Jolene

I love Michael, but I think that Brooke will be the bigger draw here. Her two singles have sold very well on iTunes and she seems to appeal to a wide range of folks.

Her first single did well, her 2nd single basically flopped (hard) – it sold 6K its first week, and didn’t chart this week. Her first one had an Idol performance to promote it, so I’m not sure how indicative it was of her current appeal. Guess we’ll get a better picture with her album sales.

  • 2dogs

her 2nd single royally flopped – it sold 6K its first week

I wouldn’t call 6K without any radio play or real promotion by an indie artist a flop. I also think it is very difficult to gauge what is a flop versus what is “OK” in today’s economy and in a music climate in which so much music is pirated, rather than purchased. No one (except for Michael Jackson it seems) is knocking it out of the park these days. I also think it is difficult to judge these indie artists by the same standards as what we may be used to from following 19′s well-moneyed roll-outs for the Carrie’s, Jordins and Davids of the world. For some perspective, Michael’s $5K put him in the 12th position among independent releases. Disappointing? Yes. A flop? Probably not by indie artist standards. Ditto for Brooke’s Radio Radio.

  • hardkandy

But I think both Brooke and MJ would say beats working 9-5 like the rest of us stiffs. If you believe in your music, just keep out there plugging away and maybe that next break will happen – won’t happen sitting at home and moping.

yea I agree. not everyone is going to win, not everyone is going to get signed to a major label, have major label resources for radio stations to play their singles and get great tv guestings.

they are doing what they can with the resources they have so that’s fine by me, as long as they put out music i can enjoy, I’m okay. most of the artists I like are not that popular anyway so I am used to not so stellar sales.

I also think it is difficult to judge these indie artists by the same standards as what we may be used to from following 19′s well-moneyed roll-outs for the Carrie’s, Jordins and Davids of the world.

yeah, this. there is a world of difference between a 19 release and an independent release, I think that goes without saying. that’s why it’s so important to win or get into top 2. being on AI never guarantees anything, especially since 19 won’t let you release albums until everyone has basically forgotten about you. even for someone who was signed by a major label like Jason, nothing is certain.

  • Jolene

^^ I altered the wording a bit because I do like Brooke and don’t want to be harsh… but 6K for a single is a big flop, even for an Indie artist. 6K is what you have to sell to get on the Top 200 Downloads chart, meaning usually about 200 songs outsell that figure weekly. Just to put it in perspective.

  • hardkandy

^^200 songs by majority of which are indie or major label artists?

  • Jolene

Both. This is the Billboard chart, it doesn’t come with asterisks and qualifications.

  • tinawina

I wouldn’t call 6K without any radio play or real promotion by an indie artist a flop.

ITA. Its a lttle hard to tell what should have happened under the circumstances.

Well, both are signed with indies that have good distibution and a bit of money, so I think they are in as good of a position as they can be for people not signed to majors. They are going to have to work it from the trenches. Nothing wrong with that. We’ll so how far it gets them.

  • hardkandy

Both. This is the Billboard chart, it doesn’t come with asterisks and qualifications.

Yeah but I was asking about the actual data, not in who are qualified to get into the charts. I think it’s clear that majority of BB200 is composed of major label artists.

Even old songs like Sex On Fire by KoL and I’m Yours by Jason Mraz, I still see very high up on the iTunes charts. Radio airplay goes a long way, indie artists just don’t have very much of that, sad to say.

  • Will M.

MJ i don’t know if you already know this. But Michael Johns is singing the theme song from a new NBC show called “The Wanted”. You can watch a trailer of the show with Michael singing “The Great Divide” in the background here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObGsvgrhzZI (i replaced the link, this one is better)

And you can already hear a snippet of the song and download it on amazon (soon it will be on itunes): http://www.amazon.com/Great-Divide-theme-Wanted/dp/B002FVRI48/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1247191237&sr=8-2

This song is completely different from the songs in his album. So, some people didn’t like the album but may like this song.

I hope they come east. Michael would be the reason I would attend.

  • ShabbyChic

As far as Brooke’s singles go, I bought Hold Up My Heart because I knew it would be a long time before the cd release. I did not buy Radio Radio because I thought the cd would be released soon and I could wait that long. I’m sure there were lots of others just like me. I think Brooke will have decent numbers for her cd, although splitting the release into two weeks won’t make it look so…

  • sammi

I’ve have already worn Michael’s CD out. I LOVE it. To me it’s real music unlike most of this manufactured stuff (not the word I am thinking) that is so popular today. JMO
Is that it for the tour dates. Do you think they will be adding more?????That makes me sad if that is all they are doing. These are my 2 favorites from Season 5 and MJ is my favorite of all. And BW is way up there also.

  • sammi

Will M- that is exciting news :clap_tb: I hope a lot of people find out about it and DL it. He seems to have so many avenues open to him. With his talent there is something wrong is he doesn’t become a success

really? that schedule BLOWS. there’s no place close to me. FML. i really wanted to go to this too.

While nice for fans, this indicates that both MJ and Brooke have accepted themselves as minor celebrities and will not be expanding their fanbases. This is not necessarily bad. They will make a decent living doing what they love.

I prefer “Voila!” but Ta-Da will work.

In fact, I actually yell “Voila!” every time I cut and paste a quotation on the PC. I will confess that I do get some strange looks from people in the immediate vicinity but one has to stick to what works.

  • bean99

I hope they make their way to Texas but doubt it. I couldn’t make it to MJ’s mini-show at the Gaylord Texan when he was here. I think it’s a good thing to do. Most idols have to start out small, even those who have a big label backing them. I don’t know how well it’s doing but I hear “Heart on my Sleeve” on the radio at work quite often. I believe we have it on an XM station. I got his cd and am enjoying it but would have liked a little more rock. One thing I have to say about MJ, he’s taking advantage of opportunities and has been keeping busy over the last year. Interesting about the theme song and the potential David Foster tour.

  • Will M.

breakdown they are indie. It is hard to tour with really popular artist when you go indie. Still, idk about Brooke, but Michael will tour in october with “David Foster and Friends”. So he will be singing with people like Seal and Michael Buble (apparently) in sold out concerts.

  • lavender1960

Well breakdown even artists on major labels have to build their fanbases and many artists every year get dropped from major labels before they even have a chance to start to build a fanbase. Major labels want gold or platinum out of the gate and right now that’s even hard for established acts on major labels. In the old days, acts were allowed to gradual build their fanbases.

Brooke and Michael are doing the best they can with the cards they’ve been dealt but it doesn’t mean either one or both won’t get a Royal Flush down the line. But that won’t happen unless you keep putting yourself out there any and every way you can. Even Idol winners have to keep plugging away because in showbiz attention spans are short.

While it is rare, the story of James Blunt is always to be kept in mind. This guy’s album and single were going nowhere for over a year I believe and somehow his single suddenly got radioplay and the rest is history – history I don’t begin to understand myself because I would use his records as a torture technique, his voice is like chalk on a blackboard to me. Daniel Powter is another example – it was only because his song got chosen for, ironically, American Idol swan song that his album and single blew up.

Jason Mraz was hot as a hip hop artist, faded into obscurity, reinvented himself and now he is back bigger than ever.

Oh Wow..can’t wait for this tour..to bad nothing around me as of yet. I never was much of a fan of Brooke on the show..but to be honest she is starting to grow on me. As for Michael..Damn that boy can sing. I can’t wait to see him live again. I love his new CD…but I also would love to hear more of his ROCK side too. Wow! The theme song for “The Wanted” The Great Divide..Michael is just Awesome! Not worried about these two Artist they a gonna be just fine! Very happy to hear they are touring together. Yahoo!
