Maybe not a momentous as the Kelly Clarkson debut, but there’s another song debuting this morning.   It’s a cut from the upcoming Shaun White: Don’t Look Down soundtrack featuring Michael Johns.

MJO has an exclusive listen to one of the songs a sweet and bluesy duet between Michael and Brooke White.

Listen HERE.

  • MaggieMarie

I love this. Wow. These two sound sound great together! I have to admit, I’m pleasantly surprised. Brooke really brings out a tender side to MJ’s vocals.

The song is very good. It’s got radio-play and hit potential. I hope they plan on releasing this as a single.

i’m not a big MJohns fan but i love this song.. they do sound awesome together
    who would’ve thought

    :)

  • weareallinnocent

Me likely, very much. Where have I heard this before?

ETA: IIRC, this soundtrack was cut pre-Idol S7. So Michael and Brooke not only knew, but had worked with each other beforehand? Did we know this during the show?

  • elisad

WOW, I’m loving Brooke in it… Michael is never my cuppa, not a Brooke fan either, but she sounds amazing.

  • May

Wow, they really do sound very good together!

  • LK09

I love it. I am a big Brooke White fan, so I am not surprised she sounds good with MJ. I am also one who thought MJ went home way too soon.

  • oceana

    Love it.

  • poporange

It is a beautiful song .

  • mjfan4life

This a great song with huge potential in my opinion…their voices are beautiful together!

  • Sarah

Really, really nice. Brooke sounds wonderful.

  • SashaB

Lovely. Very nice, indeed. This would be a hit on Country radio right now. This duet would kill. Good for them.

  • Jolene

Nice song! I think in my mind it was always Brooke with Jason and Michael with Carly, so didn’t see this coming.

But I don’t exactly get it – the soundtrack was done before Idol, did they add this later? And if so – why not just put it on Michael’s album? The song has some potential, seems sort of a waste to put it on a soundtrack not many people are going to hear about.

  • http://myspace.com/pm68 Pam

Oh wow! Fantastic song. MJ and Brooke sounded great! :)

  • hardkandy

I think in my mind it was always Brooke with Jason and Micahel with Carly, so didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t see this coming.

Yeah, I never thought they would collaborate but this is a very pleasant surprise. They sound very good together.

New songs from my favorite idols Brooke and Kelly on the same day. It’s a good day! Hallelujah!

  • windmills

Nice song, they sound good together! It doesn’t seem like they recorded their vocals together, I think it’d have been even better if they had.

  • FolkFan

Now that was nice. I would not have pegged MJ and Brooke for a duet, but I liked that.

Just because the song goes on a soundtrack doesn’t mean that it can’t go on a solo record, as well.

  • http://widyatarina.wordpress.com widz

Do you think they’ll perform this on Idol? Hehe

  • tinydcfan

Inquiring minds want to know: as others have asked, did anyone know of their collaboration before Idol? I already loved this song from the little snippet of Michael’s on Amazon – I love it even more now. Agree it must be released as a single!

  • aly

I love this Michael John’s song and the soundtrack snippets posted
earlier. I think Michael did an amazing job vocally, but didn’t
enjoy Brooke White’s vocals on this. It was nice of Michael
to ask her to sing with him, and if it helps them garner more
fans and promotion, I’m for that.

  • Jolene

Well, since Michael’s next single is supposed to be released this month, wouldn’t they have presented this as the new single if this was the one?

I agree it can be on both the album and the soundtrack, and it very well might be. Who knows, maybe there’s a specific reason it’s on the soundtrack, maybe it’s a pre-Idol song (although I doubt it) or was written especially for the movie.

I doubt they’ll perform it on AI unless it comes out as a single.

  • BootStar

This is fantastic. What are the odds they’ll perform it this season on AI? I’d sure love to see them sing it together.

  • MaggieMarie

Michael recorded the soundtrack 2 years ago. I believe he and Brooke went back and re-recorded this song – possibly (hopefully) for release as a single??

But, wow! The two of them managed to keep this a tight secret. It came as a surprise to both Michael and Brooke fans.

  • MN Sue

Bluesy Michael was always been okay in my book. I love his falsetto at the end. Brooke adds another dimension of likability on his song. Thumbs way up! I look forward to a download.

  • astrogal

the soundtrack for the dvd was done before idol. Those were used in the dvd/movie.

The songs were remastered and rerecorded some of the songs, and added 5 new songs so that they can release a separate soundtrack. so this duet wasn’t done before idol for those who were wondering.

  • kbr

Thanks so much for posting MJ, I am loving this song! Who knew Michael and Brooke would sound so good together?!

MaggieMarie did a great job of answering the questions but to just clarify in case anyone is still confused about the soundtrack/collaboration I figured I would expand on it. As MaggieMarie said this song was written for the Shaun White doc and recorded a couple of years ago, but it took a while for the film to finally be released which it just was last week on dvd. A brief snippet of Life is Okay is featured in the actual film (hense why it is on the soundtrack). Michael is working with Three Rings Projects (TRP) and up until recently fans didn’t have any info on the soundtrack and how/if it was being released with full versions of the song. In an interview with Ultimate1 Rye Randa who worked with Michael and Jeff Foxworth on the soundtrack, we learned it would be put out by TRP and that despite recording tracks earlier for the film they went back into the studio in I believe Sept 2008 to rework some of the songs and clean up the recordings which I assume is when Brooke got involved (no connection between the two as far as I know pre-idol).

We don’t know if this is going to be on Michael’s album due out in March, but maybe they are trying to determine that now by giving us a preview. Michael’s single release date has not been announced yet which also makes me think they are still finalizing the song and based on what TRP has said it sounds more likely that it will be a February single release (in an email they said it will be a couple of weeks). Maybe they are also thinking of this for a single as well (personally I would say it’s better for both if they go solo on the first single).

Michael did say on Idol and post Idol he always wanted to sing with Brooke and I guess his wish came true! I think their voices sound suprisingly good together. Love this song, and I hope they get some good sales for it between the Michael and Brooke camps.

  • Lera

This song could be a big hit it has a great hook to it. I’m thinking they will indeed sing this duet on Final season 8 show. If they don’t then AI producers are dumb!

Maybe MJ and BW are testing the waters with this song, to see what kind of response they get? Well if they are, then I hope they release it.

The title “Life is Okay ” could be a song AI would use as either a farewell song to contestants or during their video’s intro’s.

WHen I heard the snippet I heard the hook and it was good, then when I heard BW on it, it was nice. There was only one flaw in that song, BW sounded much louder then MJ. My guess is they each recorded their part seperate in the studio and it was mixed together.

  • bubbles

I really like this a lot! Michael and Brooke compliment each other well. Funny, I would have never put these two together, but I’m happy with the results, and would love to hear this on the radio.

  • mary111

Wow, I love this song. I was never a big Brooke White fan but was always a MJ fan. I must say they both sound amazing on this.

  • kbr

There was only one flaw in that song, BW sounded much louder then MJ. My guess is they each recorded their part seperate in the studio and it was mixed together

I have to agree with this Lera…it seems like Brooke was “inserted” into the song. I am guessing if they really wanted to release this as a single off of Michael’s album (if it’s on it) they would re-record it. Still loving their voices together though…so soulful and pretty.

  • heart2

Wow… oh…Wow..I’M loving this song..Michael and Brooke sound wonderful. I knew Michael wanted to do a duet with Brooke.. But OMG..This is to Beautiful. They sound great together!! And Yes this could be a HIT!! I am so excited for them!!

  • MaggieMarie

Thanks KBR! I didn’t realize Michael had gone back into the studio to remaster. Cool!

  • calimari

I liked this. I wasn’t a big Johns fan last year – I could see the potential but he seemed to phone it in a lot. I did buy his song from country night. I like Brooke a lot & will check out her CD when it comes out. But I really enjoyed this song. Brooke occasionally had a few “cracks” in her voice, but I think it was left in for personality. But the song itself I enjoy. This was nicely done.

  • 2dogs

I liked both of these contestants on the show and I love this song. I always thought that their voices would compliment each other (more so, IMO, than Carly and Michael’s do). I agree that the mix was not as seemless as it could have been and the Brooke’s audio is a little too loud in places. But, I will download this for certain.

I would love, love to hear them perform this live together and hope they get out and do some promo for this.

  • Lera

Thank you KBR, I couldn’t come up with the correct wording and you did which was “Inserted” LOL

Well to all who are reading, I hope everyone enjoys this season and AI doesn’t let us down like I was from season 5 to season 6. I didn’t watch season 6 but 3 evenings. I’m just not really big on pop. Some but not a lot and season 6 was all pop.

  • primeminister

    Aww, I like this!

  • OregonMJFan

This is a beautiful song! I like Michael and Brooke singing together. I had a hard time imagining it before, but they compliment each other well. This definitely could be radio hit!

  • lex

Wow, they sound great together. I was never sold on either one really, but I can see now that I could change my mind. Good song!

  • bean99

Wow, loved their voices together. I was never that big of a Brooke fan but she sounds really good on this. I think Michael should put this on his album if he can.

  • Lino

Yeah. I think he should put this on his album too. What a fantastic song. This can totally become a hit.

  • sabby_rina

    *Jaw drops*

I want this song on my ipod ASAP!

  • kbr

Thank you KBR, I couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t come up with the correct wording and you did which was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Insertedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ LOL

I know Lera, my technical musical jargon is pretty impressive isn’t it :lol_ee:

  • judes

I didn’t realise how well MJ’s & Brooke’s voices would blend together. Its a great song, I love it!

  • Lera

    Kbr, it’s better then mine!

I have a problem with brain fog, seriously it’s a medical condition so I will have it in my head what I want to say and when I go to type it the words are so lost. I have to actually go back to the main topic that MJ wrote to remember what I was thinking at times.

Pain in the butt that is. Yeah, I’ll be taking notes through this season so I can deal with that brain fog.

  • dante

Wow – I love this!!!! Great combo and who would have known? I would buy this single in a heartbeat.

  • PalmettoStateRocks

Thanks so much for letting us hear this beautiful, beautiful song. MJ and Brooke sound awesome together!

  • http://everyopinion.blogspot.com Terrie

I really like Brooke’s recorded voice, liberated from AI performance anxiety. She has a country tinge to her folkiness that makes me wonder if she could carve an Emmylou Harris sort of niche for herself.

It’s great to see that Michael Johns’ talent cannot be denied. May AI7 be the gift that keeps giving for seasons to come.

  • absabella

The song is fantastic..Love the lyrics, blusey vibe, Great job Michael/Brooke! Their voices mesh very well together…Definitely has “Hit” written all over it.. Thank You MJ for posting it..

I’ve been iffy with Michael Johns, but wow this song…. I would totally buy. He really needs to stick with this kind of stuff.

  • Fran

Lovely. Very nice, indeed. This would be a hit on Country radio right now. This duet would kill. Good for them.

So glad to read this. There’s been all positive comments everywhere and lots of people said it’s a hit and its very radio friendly. I was interested to know which genre would this song come under. I think it has that blues, country and folk vibe about it but what type of radio stations would play it .

    I’d be happy with country.

  • Qcloud9

Michael & Brooke sound beautiful and I think this is one of those songs with wide appeal that could play on many types of radio stations.
