Jillian Reynolds and Ace Young interview Michael Johns, who also performs his single, “Heart on My Sleeve” The acoustic version is very nice.

Video after the JUMP…

  • Thea

    VERY nice indeed.

Michael Johns James Morrison? I might buy this album. But then listen to it in small doses – a whole album of souly slowy ballads is a bit much for my taste, as good as they might be!

  • bean99

Thanks for posting that, Mj. It was wonderful waking up to Michael Johns. :wub_tb: I enjoyed the accoustic version of hi single, too. Gotta admit I missed his dancing, lol.

I don’t think he meant they’re all ballads, Thea. I can’t imagine him going away completely from faster, rockish/soul songs.

  • kbr

Thanks for posting MJ, I loved this interview with Michael. I actually think I liked the song even better acoustic. Michael’s voice with stripped down music just sounds amazing.

I agree with bean about the album, I think it’s going to be lots of soul stuff as he has described earlier, I don’t think it’s all going to sound like the single.

  • Jolene

Was this posted on the headlines thread? Michael did an interview on the Billie Bush Show to promote HOMS.

After a few more listens I like this a lot better than I did at first, but I’m still not sure how radio friendly it is.

  • CFIdolsfan

I was not a big fan on Idol, but this is beautiful.:-). I wish him all the best with this single and his cd.

  • pdlove

Oh… what a treat. I really love this song and hearing him sing Heart on my Sleeve live was beyond beautiful. Love the part where his hair is being tussled around!!!!!!

  • wjmtv

That was very pretty. Kinda like him.

ETA: I wish Ms. Jillian would shut the hell up from time to time. Poor Ace can’t get a word in sledgewise.

  • Grey Skies

Thanks so much for posting this, MJ! Michael sounded wonderful and I can’t wait for his album. I hope he has tremendous success with it; he deserves it.

  • Lino

Thanks MJ. And yeah. I think i like the accoustic version more than i like the original too.

  • weareallinnocent

The acoustic is nice, much better than the produced single. He sounds really good. But the song, blech. Lyrically empty. I hope he got better material for the album.

  • aly

Thanks so much for posting MJ!
He did a fantastic job with the acoustic version of
“Heart on my Sleeve”. His wonderful vocals shine thru.

  • justic

    BEAUTIFUL!
wasn’t a fan of MJ last season (cookie was too much to consume) but this song is absolutely great.
IMO it’s the best 1st single out of all season 7 alumnus.
Michael Johns stayed true to who he is as an artist and delivered. it was really easy for me to connect with it because it’s real and honest and it’s so HIM. non of the package commercial crap that idol/big record companies usually produce.
wish i could say this about my favorite but i can’t.
    Good Luck MJ!
can’t wait to hear the rest of your album.

  • I want pizza

The accoustic is beautiful!! I love it, I like it even better than the other version. Man what a great voice he has.

That disco dancing on other hand….not as good..oh Michael :lol_tb:

  • Patchchat

His voice sounded great — strong and clear, but didn’t he look a little different? I wouldn’t call it weight gain per se, but his face looked puffier, rounder with more cheeks than I remember. It aged him, but prolly he’s just tired.

Oh and Jillian being quiet some times and sharing the interview? Ain’t gonna happen. She hosts a morning show here in L.A. and I tell ya? Ya tune in for 5 mins (cuz that’s all you can take) and you hear her for 4.75 of those minutes. Annoying as all get out!

  • heart2

Wow..Michael looks and sounds great. I love the acoustic version as well as the original. Love that voice…Michael has just got it. Good Job Mate! I’ll dance with Michael any day.

Ooh, I love this acoustic version! Did he really say he worked with James Morrison? My James Morrison?!? Ooh la la!

  • oceana

This was beautiful. I haven’t heard the produced version yet but it’s a shame if they didn’t capture that same quality as the acoustic version.

It was great to see MJ again, he’s so cool, cute, and hip, I think I’m going to like his cd.

Idol Extra was good this week, they need to do more surprises like this. Much more interesting than spending 3/4 of the show interviewing the person who got kicked off, esp when that person isn’t very interesting (i.e. megan). I like how they have Ace out on the road with people like DC and Bo (coming next week). Ace is a natural for this, he’s very likable.

I really don’t know why it’s so hard for shows to find appealing female hosts. They seem to choose the most abrasive (or boring and bland) personalities possible (Jillian, Kim C, Mikala, Carrie Ann Inaba, Suzanne from DWTS). There are plenty of likable and interesting women in the business, why don’t they use some of them? Is it harder for women to fit into the host role? I’ve wondered about this for awhile. I think Heidi Klum is one example of a woman playing host/judge and doing it really well.

  • sma11ie

If they’re not abrasive, then they’re called dumb, etc. like Samantha from DWTS. Though… in this particular case, she does seem a bit dumb to me, sorry. I dunno, the Kathie Lee and Kelly Ripa types of female hosts seem to get more ratings, I guess? I think Ellen it the best, but she’s rare.

  • weareallinnocent

IMO ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s the best 1st single out of all season 7 alumnus.

What?! Not a fan of the never-say-die Magic Rainbow? LOL

It may be that, but it’s not like it has a great deal of competition yet. :-) I haven’t heard Brooke’s, but if I’m being honest, I’m banking on Jason taking top honors for best 1st single of S7. And, that’s coming from a big ol’ Cook fan, too!

I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t call it weight gain per se, but his face looked puffier

LOL I thought the same thing!

  • Jolene

didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t he look a little different? I wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t call it weight gain per se, but his face looked puffier, rounder with more cheeks than I remember. It aged him, but prolly heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s just tired.

I think it’s just age. He looks like a dad now, and I never thought that while he was on Idol. He doesn’t seem to have gained weight, so I think it’s just natural ageing.

I just heard the Billie Bush interview and I have to say that comment about bored 40-year-old housewives being his main demographic is sort of a strange sales pitch for his music.

  • 2dogs

I love the acoustic version as well. Although I also like and enjoy the the studio version, there is a hair too much background vocals and instruments in it towards the end. It takes some of the edge off his vocals and it is the running background sound, in general, that gives the studio version more of its adult contemporary flavor. I don’t think they completely over-cooked it, but I’m of the camp that the less that is done to mess with Michael’s natural, raw tone, the better. The acoustic is just more to my taste. I feel the same way about Light On and Crush — with good, distinctive vocalists, I almost always enjoy the live versions better.

  • hermy

I really liked that! Acoustic version always seem better for me.

  • bubbles

I’m another one loving the acoustic version as well. I love the studio version too, but yeah, Michael does always sound better when we can hear more of his voice.

And I didn’t mind the dancing one bit!! I like the way he moves!

  • pj

Ooh, I love this acoustic version! Did he really say he worked with James Morrison? My James Morrison?!? Ooh la la!

Purps, you will appreciate this. I am in the audience, tired as hell. As you know, I voted heavily for Ace and think Johnsy is hot (although I didn’t vote for him), and at what moment did I get fangirly? When Ace asked Johnsy who he was working with and he said James Morrison. I’m the one who clapped and squeed, causing MJ to point in my direction and say, “Clap. He’s great.” LOL.

ETA: No squee or clap for Diane Warrnen, though. Heh.

Sadly, the performance was a tape for the studio audience as well. :-(

  • Dlynne

This version is gorgeous! I liked the interview, too. He seemed very laid back which is nice.

I really never thought much of Ace before until he started doing this show. I think he is great at it and I wish that he was the lead host instead.

  • SpenserJ

PJ, you’re like famous now! LOL, you’ve had an eventful trip :)

Oh, and I’m trying to imagine you attempting to be all calm and cool when you’re in the same room with ACE!!!!

  • pj

Spense, hardly famous. But it was fun! ;-) I hadn’t eaten since 11 am, so I was pretty cranky during Idol Extra even though I had fun (no food on the set and I wasn’t hungry when we went to the Grove… bad planning). First thing I did after getting back to our suite is make a sammy. I’m notorious for being cranky when hungry. LOL.

Ace was signing all kinds of autographs after the show. My friend got a hug, but I was trying to bust a move back to the hotel. I’m seriously lame. LOL. I sent MJ a recap. :-)

ETA: Ace and MJ both looked hawt. ;-) I really like Ace’s hair better short.

  • mcm

Ooh, I love this acoustic version! Did he really say he worked with James Morrison? My James Morrison?!? Ooh la la!

According to this article, James Morrison co-wrote this single, “Heart on My Sleeve”

The track, Heart On My Sleeve was written by the amazing singer/songwriter, James Morrison who Johns has mentioned is someone he greatly admires and respects in the business along with the brilliant mastermind, John Shanks…

Actually, Josiah Leming has the best single yet to come out from S7 alums, but that’s JMO. I don’t know if MJ’s blog posted this before, or even promotes him at all, but he had just put up new singles on his myspace. http://www.myspace.com/josiahleming

The song’s called Over and Over. I think it’s very nice.

Back to Michael, I like the song in acoustic better.

  • hardkandy

Actually, Josiah Leming has the best single yet to come out from S7 alums,

I agree Mel. I’m not a Josiah fan but that boy is an amazing songwriter.

  • prop joe

Thank you so much for sharing this, MJ. This is really good. I’m liking this song more.

And I’d clap for James Morrison too!

ETA: I also like the part when MJ points to Ace so he could talk. That was nice.
