UPDATE: Police Say Michael Jackson ‘Heavily Addicted’ to Oxycontin. He received an injection of Demerol an hour before his death. “The information and other emerging details, make it almost certain the Los Angeles Police Homicide and Robbery Division will launch a full investigation into the circumstances of the pop singer’s death.” via ABC News.

Many are still reeling from the sad, and untimely death of pop icon Michael Jackson, and the news continues to dominate the news cycle today.

I’m watching the video for “Remember the Time” on the FUSE music channel–I totally forgot that was from an Eddie Murphey movie.

At any rate, the rumors are flying fast and furious, as are the tributes.   So, here’s a wrap up of today’s MJ news:

Jackson’s personal doctor went missing, and there are rumors that drugs may have played a part in his death.   A Jackson friend told TMZ   he had been given a shot of the pain killer Demerol before going into cardiac arrest.

The question of drug use means the autopsy could take 6-8 weeks, according to the LA coronors office. A series of tests will be run, including those for toxicology.

The 911 call has been released, you can listen to it HERE.   The person who made the call said Jackson was not breathing and unconscious.   The doctor on scene — Dr. Conrad Murray — was the only witness.   TMZ reports that emergency workers on the scene felt Jackson was already dead, but the doctor refused to let them “call it.”

Dr. Conrad is still missing. (eta: he’s been found, but he couldn’t be found for hours)

Liza Minelli, a good friend of Jackson, predicts “All hell will break loose” when the autopsy report comes back.   Ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley says Jackson always believed he’d die young, just like her father, Elvis Presley.

Jackson’s other ex-wife, and the mother of his 2 older children, Debbie Rowe, is said to be inconsolable.   She could get custody of her children. Right now, they are in the custody of Jackson’s mother, Katharine.

The night before his death, Jackson rehearsed 10-11 songs for UK concert performances scheduled to begin in two weeks.   He told his manager afterward, “I’m so happy…this is really our time.”

Jackson was “awash in debt” at the time of his death, and leaves a troubled financial legacy.

The news of Jackson’s death overwhelmed the internet, rocketing web traffic. Services like Google, Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and Wikipedia were pounded with requests.

Jackson’s brother Marlon says his brother’s legacy will live on.

Since his death, Jackson’s music has dominated the iTunes sales chart. As of 12:20 on Friday afternoon, 41 songs on the iTunes Top 100 singles chart featured contributions from Michael Jackson on either lead or backing vocals. The e Top 100 albums, had 24 entries from either Michael’s solo career or from his days with the Jackson 5.

MTV assesses Jackson’s groundbreaking career by the numbers: He sold more than 750 million records worldwide. He notched eight platinum or multiplatinum albums and 13 #1 singles, and had 47 tracks crack the Billboard Hot 100.

Yeah, Lisa Marie, the daughter of Elvis, was his wife — not Priscilla.

I’ve never seen such utter dominance by a single artist on itunes like I’m seeing by Michael Jackson today.

    Long live the King.

  • houstonrufus

Mj, is that link re: Lisa Marie saying he would die young correct?

  • sonyab

Where is the doctor?!!?! Did he kill Michael accidently or on purpose and then hid? What the hell is going on!?!?! Where is the doctor!?!?!! :mad_wp:

  • houstonrufus

Last I heard, the doctor is in LA now and cooperating with questioning.

  • Matt

Well, the doctor has been found for a few hours now, but the fact that he fled for nearly 24 hours is definitely suspicious.

I have a feeling Liza may be correct.

  • Tess

The list is long: Elvis P, Freddie M, Janis J, Jimmy H, Marvin G, Buddy H, Ritchie V, Selena, Freddy P, Sonny B, Patsy C, John L, James D, Heath L, River P, Steve M, Marilyn M, John R, Chris F, Natalie W, Bruce & Brandon L, John B, Andy K, Gilda R, and many more. Dead long before they should have been. Now we add Michael J.

What is it about fate that takes so many really good entertainers and actors and comedians way too early. Luckily we are left with the work they did so that their memories will go on.

And Michael, like many before him, will have a death laced with tragedy and what ifs.

    Oh yeah?!?! Well that’s good!

  • chelley

I hope there isn’t added controvery to his death–his life was complicated and depressing as it was, (towards the end).

I am watching MTV for the first time IN YEARS and it’s so nice to see videos and VJ’s showing/discussing MUSIC! I’ve always loved MJ’s music but in watching the ongoing videos, I realized that there were so many MJ songs (besides my favorites) that I had actually forgotten about, that I still love.

    I’m truly heartbroken…

  • yeahyeahsure

My heart still hurts from all of this. What a talent he was.

  • St.Lucia

I’ve dedicated most of my day to doing nothing but listening and celebrating Michael Jackson’s wonderful musical legacy. I’ve not really listened to the news much because I can’t really stand hearing about how “wacko” he ended up becoming. The only channel I’ve turned on(surprisingly) is MTV because they keep playing his videos and it has been a wonderful treat to not only see music videos in the middle of teh day, but all ones that I hadn’t seen in such a long time.

I want to remember his music and how happy it has always made me, and not hear how strange he has become. Because his personal life didn’t impact me as much as his music always has.

His death has left me heartbroken. Certain songs make me burst into tears and I’m surprised at how much this has affected me since I never knew him personally, of course, but it represents so much of my childhood and I just feel like I’ve lost something amazing.

Anyway, thank you MJ for the updated news. I do want to know what is going on, but I don’t have the heart to facilitate the news networks today. I really appreciate your Reader’s Digest version.

  • ravengirl

What? MTV playing music videos? Amazing!
Why they stopped doing that I’ll never know.

I’m one of those still reeling, I still can’t quite digest it. I’ve had a very unproductive day doing nothing but blogging and listening to MJ’s music.

*US ITUNES UPDATE: My feed shows that Michael Jackson now occupies an astonishing 70 of the top 100 songs on the US iTunes Pop chart.

  • Grammie Kari

St. Lucia, as you know MTV will be airing a special at 6 PM on Michael. What a trip on Memory Lane today has been. I had forgotten the Jackson 5 appearances, so that takes us back to 1968-69 when I was a youth.

Then, I can remember the birth of MTV (August, 1981) and my young children watching him on TV. My daughter remembers rolling skating to Michacel’s music! We all danced and exercised to MJ’s sound.

There will be a candlelight vigil at the Motown Museum in Detroit on Sunday at 8:00 PM. I anticipate huge crowds in the area!

  • houstonrufus

Sunn, that was pretty heartbreaking indeed. The scope of his career and biography is almost too much to grasp.

Wow! 70 of the to 100 on the pop chart? That is mindboggling.

  • St.Lucia

I live in Indiana(no where near Gary) but I’ve always loved that someone so AMAZING came from my good ole’ state. I’m sure there is a ton of celebrations going on near his old childhood home.

And thank you Grammie Kari, I intend on watching and taping the special at 6 tonight because I’ve already spent most of the day reliving his wonderful music, so I will continue to do so.

    I’m just so dang sad.

  • lilbrusc102

I’m still in so much shock, but I’ve been listening to his albums all afternoon in celebration of his musical legacy. 70 out of the top 100 pop? That’s just proof of the strength of his catalogue that there are so many amazing songs for people who want to honor his memory by downloading to choose from.

I hope all the mystery surrounding his death is dealt with tactfully…I can’t imagine what his family and poor kids are going through.

    Michael told Lisa Marie:

At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢

A self-fulfilling prophecy I think. What a tragic, tortured, troubled, and brilliant soul was he. His life, his being was a dichotomy of extremes, never finding a balance, never walking that happy line between the black and the white.
Going over his life today has been so painful, more painful than his death. I’ve reached a point of thinking of his death as almost a relief from the immeasurable pain that man suffered and yes probably also inflicted.
He was a lost boy that no one was willing or able to find, least of all those closest to him. I pray he finds rest… rest now Michael.

May God have mercy on your soul.

  • abbysee

I know that the autopsy will reveal drug abuse, whether self medication or otherwise might be the reason for all hell breaking loose. Hopefully I will be wrong and that won’t be another shoe dropping for his family especially his kids.

Lisa Marie’s statement was what I had been noticing, I told my mom yesterday that I never saw Michael living into old age…..I guess he didn’t either. I feel for her, because I knew that she was just using her anger to keep herself from being sucked back into his vortex after their marriage. I always felt she loved him, I remember the vehemence she expressed when people questioned her motives. I know she tried hard to help him. How sad for her that she couldn’t.

The itunes domination is to be understood, the music stands up. I and so many of my friends and family are just completely gutted. It’s like I expected it, but it still feels like a kick in the stomach.

  • houstonrufus

I think that is what has made me so sad today. Didn’t we all really think it would end this way? Weren’t all the strange personality tics and choices signs of a truly troubled person? And even more sad, it doesn’t sound like anyone could have done anything to really help him. Granted, these are rumors, but the details of drug abuse and even interventions are starting to surface. It’s truly become such a cliche how many celebs disintegrate into a life of drug abuse and self destruction. A cliche, but no less heartbreaking. And this poor boy didn’t seem to have a chance, what with his upbringing and seemingly very senstive sensibility.

I am glad that his music/performance output was so vast and so influential and so loved. Because his personal life/biography is starting to shape into one of the most ironically tragic stories I think the entertainment world will ever know.

I’d forgotten just how talented Michael was. Looking at his videos long versions reminded me. Wow. The man had vision way beyond his time. Past all of the insanity and appalling allegations – Michael Jackson was a stone genius. Such sadness. What a waste.

Thanks for the info MJ. I learned more here than in watching an hour of the MSM.

  • Sunn

Michael converted to Islam when he was in Bahrain, according to the tenets of that religion he must be buried, preferably within the first 24 hours, for his soul to rest. Apparently, according to the coroner, the body will be released today, so I hope he receives his burial soon.

Frankly I don’t see a point in the investigation, drugs didn’t kill Michael, they just finished him off. Whatever killed Michael happened decades ago, not yesterday.

  • Pam

Here is an interview with a Dr. Steve Garner from NY Methodist Hospital from Fox News. He is basically saying if the Dr. did indeed inject MJ with Demerol then a crime has been committed and that had he been given a simple immediate injection of Narcan (sp?) that this could have possibly reversed the reaction.

Wow. The man had vision way beyond his time. Past all of the insanity and appalling allegations – Michael Jackson was a stone genius.

Indeed. The thing about Michael was that he had so much going for him. He had a voice that for whatever reason, just grabbed people. He was a true visionary, and he knew how to assemble all of the top people in their fields to create a superior product. As if those weren’t enough gifts, he had more natural rhythm and dance ability than anyone else in the world. People can train their whole lives and not be able to move the way he just inherently could.

He was just the most amazing performer I’ve ever seen. I’m amused at how into the music my five year old keeps getting as I’m watching the MTV special. MJ quite simply had some really quality tunes.

It’s probably just me, and I KNEW the man had his issues, I did, but I just didn’t see his life ending in an untimely death. Maybe it’s just my way of thinking but when there are people I look up to, I just expect to possibly look up to them forever, for my life span. I know that’s foolish, naive, and just flat out stupid. I knew the man couldn’t live forever, but I expected him to live to be older than 50. 50 is too young. 50 means he still had some great left in him. I knew he was troubled. I knew there were issues underlying that were never brought to the surface and I did worry about him. Heck, I didn’t even think he looked good in the past few years(but a lot of that might have been his physical appearance contributing to that fact) but I just didn’t expect this to happen so soon in my lifetime.

Or maybe I’m just an optimist. Sometimes celebrities and their lifestyles seem so outlandish that I sometimes am surprised some of them live through the choices they make, and maybe I really did think of Michael Jackson as invincible. Foolish I know.

Well, even if that was the case, our society has enough anti-Kevorkian type rules on the books to make any doctor who participates in any death that has a whiff of euthanasia in it to a rather hellish life. Or, for the sake of argument, let’s just assume the doctor made an honest mistake or bad medical decision…his name is still MUD. The press is never going to let this go, hell, I think people are still checking the building for Elvis.

I remember watching this press conference and then, later, wondering how he was going to do all of those shows — given that he’s often looked frail and had rumored health problems.

  • Tess

I, for one, know how hard it is to deal with my very simple life and the stressful issues that erupt ever so often. I also know how easy it is to just go “walk-about” (an Aborigine term, I believe, that means to put everything on hold for awhile until you can sort it out). And I am sure most Mom’s know how tough it is to keep yourself happy and contented while taking care of the little ones who keep yelling “Mom” while pulling on your hem.

Now enlarge that stress a hundred fold, and have “everyone” pulling at your hem for attention (fans, associates, advisors, producers, record execs, staff, your family (especially dear old Dad). I bet there were times Michael went “walk-about” not for hours, but for days or months. Add to that a child-like innocence and the inability to fully “reason” things out because you never had those type of “growing up lessons” when you were a kid because you were never a Kid…you were a money factory for your Dad from the age of 4.

Michael just wore out and whatever “drugs” he was taking weren’t the ’cause of death….his worn out SOUL was. Mentally we can only push ourselves so far before everything just wears out.

Oh Tess, I always look for your comments, you are always the sound of reason, you bring everything back into focus and you down right have everything pegged all the time. You are a genius.

You are so right he never got a childhood and he was that product. I am surprised he lasted as long as he did.

  • Niall

My God, it is Elvis and Anna Nicole all over again. I hate seeing these damaged yet gifted people isolated and taken advantage of by various leeches and parasites. I think it was fairly well known that MJ had a drug problem but it is so sad that he was so far removed from having real friends and contact with functioning members of his family that there was no way to intervene.

What I feel saddest about is knowing that the MJ I admired and loved has actually been dead for years and years. I just kind of prefer not to think too much about the man walking around in his body for the last 15 years or so…

It’s just so sad all around. I’m more affected by his death than I thought I would be. I think part of it is that I thought he was just going to be one of those people who lived forever.

I’ve been rocking and dancing around to his music since last night…it is truly timeless. Referring to my previous statement, he will live on forever through his music.

All that said, he was obviously a tortured soul. I hope that he finally finds the peace in the next life that he didn’t find in this one.

I mentioned this in another thread, but with all the speculation going on regarding the kids I would not be surprised if the ultimate guardians end up being Janet and Jermaine Dupri. She’s more financially stable than others in her family, is relatively normal (as normal as you can be after growing up in that family) and rumors have always been that she and Jermaine are already married. I can’t see his parents being able to care for young children given their age. I also shudder at the thought of Joe Jackson having influence over another generation. God forbid should they have any musical talent, he’ll be exploiting them so fast our heads will spin.

Usher got really upset with Deepak Chopra on Larry King last night. I understand where Usher was coming from, Deepak already had elaborated previously on CNN, on the Campbell Brown show, that he had been concerned about Michael, Michael had asked him for a prescription for a narcotic and Deepak was shocked.

Deepak realized that Michael was surrounded by doctors that were feeding him this stuff – in other words nothing has changed since Elvis Presley died and brought it up again on Larry King when all the rest of the people were just trying to remember Michael for the positive things.

But I understand that Deepak is upset and that this was a tragedy that should have been avoided. On the other hand Michael Jackson was a 50 year old man who made his own choices, he was otherwise very smart and I think he was pushing his physical limits on this comeback. But he was raised on “the show must go on” credo. Especially if he thought this was his last chance to redeem himself and pull himself out of debt.

I have to wonder why Michael Jackson had a cardiologist living with him for the last 2 months? Any doctor can prescribe the drugs he needs. Why a cardiologist? Was something else going on?

It also sounds like this doctor was a quack and yet how did he get to be a cardiologist. The 911 call suggests that the doctor was administering CPR to MJ on top of his bed. Even I know you don’t do CPR on a soft surface. The doctor did also administer some additional shot that was supposed to counter act the Demerol, this was noted by the firefighters/paramedics. Essentially Jackson was dead then but the paramedics are saying the doctor refused to allow them to pronounce him dead and insisted they continue CPR. When Mr. Cardiologist should have known that without oxygen to the brain for that period of time, he would have been a vegetable if they were able to resuscitate him. Very sad.

And I do agree with Deepak. Why aren’t the authorities making more examples of these celebrity doctors who are causing, feeding and enabling dangerous addictions? But then it isn’t just celebrity doctors, there is a prescription medication problem that is more widespread.

The one interesting thing that I heard on CNN was that the royalties on Michael’s music go to the kids already? Hopefully he set something up already that is beyond challenge. Aye there’s the rub.

I find the need to go out and buy MJ music odd. If you were a true fan don’t you already have everything that Michael ever did? And for example when Michael Hutchence died, I couldn’t listen to INXS music for 2 years. Perhaps because it was a death of the band as well as his death. Just too painful for me. However apparently MJ was bringing in 50 – 70 million dollars a year on his royalties alone before he died.

  • Niall

I’m not surprised Usher got upset. He’s also the guy who rightfully criticized Chris Brown and then backed off of it and joined the pack of enablers. Stars don’t like to tell the truth about each other. It’s not disrespectful to talk about the aspects of MJs life that weren’t savory. It is part of him and his story. This mad dash to ignore the bad and cannonize somebody for the good they did just because they died is strange.

  • lavender1960

I understand your point Niall but since CNN spent all the time before and after Larry King talking about all of Michael’s problems including Deepak telling his story about Michael and his concerns and his anger at the celebrity doctors parasites there is also a time to talk about the good things since Larry was a friend of MJ and had gathered people close to MJ including Liza Minelli and Miko Brando, both of whom were in near tears the whole hour. It was not like CNN wasn’t giving or will be giving Deepak lots of coverage for his concerns all night long. They were the first to have Mr. Oxman, former MJ lawyer and family friend, talking about Michael’s abuse of prescription drugs.

    Second Autopsy for Michael Jackson

A source close to the family of Michael Jackson tells TMZ the family has requested a second autopsy — and it is currently underway somewhere in Los Angeles.

Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not disrespectful to talk about the aspects of MJs life that werenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t savory. It is part of him and his story. This mad dash to ignore the bad and cannonize somebody for the good they did just because they died is strange.

I agree with you. Some blogs are deleting posts that bring up the unsavory things of MJ. Very strange.

Larry said he would have Usher and Liza back on for another show. I believe Larry was trying to provide a balance and his guests were not going for it.

The media is having a field day with this and some Senator or Governor, somewhere is relieved.
