David Cook had many of us at Hello, but Billie Jean turned David into a star that night. It only seems fitting and somewhat ironic that the person to top David Cook’s record, is the man whose song catapulted David Cook to the front runner during his season on American Idol. I am sure David is highly honored and cool with his record being broken, because MJ’s talent is in a league of his own. But like all of us, I am sure he would have chosen far different circumstances to be the reason Michael broke his record. RIP Michael.

As a Cook fan, it tickles me to see him mentioned by Billboard this week. If you’re going to lose a record to anyone, Michael Jackson is certainly the person to lose to. (DC still holds the Hot 100 record, though, right?).

I remember going on family vacation from Canada to LA in ’84 when I was in my early teens. My whole family was allowed to choose one thing they wanted to do more than anything before we left. I chose going to the Neverland gates, hoping to catch a glimpse of Michael or any activity. I remember my Dad rolling his eyes and saying he’d be a nobody in another year or two. lol Funny thing is, he was the most excited one when we arrived. Unfortunately, Michael and his brothers were on the road in the midst of the Victory Tour. Still, I’ll never forget the thrill of just being there.

Michael’s music just never gets old. From the Jackson 5 stuff, to Off the Wall to the Thriller era. You can still play any of it over and over and never grow tired. For me, he was an amazing showman more than anything. I could just watch his videos endlessly. There will never be anyone like him again. It’s exciting to see that he’s garnering new young fans and I love that he’s dominating the charts again. What a fitting tribute!

Believe it or not, I don’t have a copy of Thriller nor any other Michael album. don’t get me wrong I’m intent to change that status sometime this month.

However, I am rectifying that situation by ordering my CD (want a hard copy) on Amazon even as I type this. I decided on “The Essential Michael Jackson” since it contains a few J-5 tunes; I mean, why not? Now I just need to make another puchase of $10.01 and I will qualify for Amazon’s Free Super Saver shipping…

I wasn’t a big part of the recent buying frenzy, but I did download The Essensial Jacksons, I think it’s called’ ¦culled from the stuff he did with his brothers post Motown. You can hear some of the tics and nuances he utilized later in his career.

I downloaded The Essentials this past weekend. It’s awesome! I confess that when I read about how phenomenolly his music was selling, it brought tears to my eyes. Some were happy tears because apparently a whole new generation (including my own children who won’t stop watching him on youtube) is now being exposed to MJ’s amazing talent. Many were sad tears because I keep thinking about how sad and lonely MJ seemed to be. If only he could see what’s happening with his music now. His death hit me hard. I have so many happy memories of being with my friends and having that great MJ music in the background. Darn it Michael! Why did this have to happen???

Also, as someone asked upthread, I’d like to order a concert dvd and am looking for recommendations.

Nearly 2 million Michael Jackson songs, more than 300,000 albums bought in days after his death. Article Link This is really amazing. There is no one out there with this type of buying power right now. If I remember correctly, The Beatles, and Elvis are the only two that have outsold MJ. I don't think we will ever see stars this like this again. Not in today's commercial market.

sonyab, I saw an interview the other day with Lionel and he said that. I already knew about Paul McCartney. They somehow managed to be great songwriters but I’m not sure how you do that w/o reading/writing music!

I have most of his stuff….Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, etc on CD, had about 60 of his songs on my ipod before he died…glad that many are discovering, or rediscovering the music. It’s really good. I think I will purchase some video though….

The HIstory tour was amazing!

I saw the Victory tour with Michael and his brothers in ’84. That one too was pretty cool, as far as I recall.

Funny enough – a few months ago – I started amassing a collection of vintage cartoon DVD’s to give my brother for his 40th birthday (which is in a few days). The old Jackson 5 cartoon was among them. So, I guess that was a timely purchase. I would have had to pay quadruple for it this week.
