Matt Giraud tells Lindsey Parker from Yahoo music in this interview from Idol tour rehearsals that along with “Georgia” from Hollywood Week, he’ll be singing something more “old-school musician type” and he’ll be “jamin’ on the keys” like he never did on the Idol stage. Watch the video after the jump.

Not that it matters – more curiosity then anything but is Matt bi-racial?

  • ppwars

Matt is full blooded American. LOL. I gotta thank Tiger Woods for helping me get things in the right perspective. At his first Masters, Tiger was asked if he preferred to be known as an Asian-American or an African-American. With a slightly indignant countenance he responded, ” an American.”

Matt is of African-American heritage on his mother’s side. American heritage both sides.

  • Squirrely

When I went to London I wrote African American on my immigration card, and the women told me very snottily ‘we don’t need your ethnicity, just where you are from’.

I figured Matt was American ;p

Maybe it is the constant twittering and whatnot, but for some reason, I’m loving Matt Giraud a lot after the show! I’ve always enjoyed him on the show but I’ve been really into him after. So excited to see him on tour!

  • Tess

“But “I loved soul music,” said Giraud, who is biracial; his father is white and his mother is white and African-American.

In his family tree is music. His maternal grandfather, whom he never met and who died before he was born, once had a hit record on a soul label.”

And, to be politically correct what I knew as negro, which became black, and is now per the 12.8% of U.S. citizens that indicate this race, it is referred to as African-American. Please correct me if I have the term incorrect but that is how the census list it:
    black/African-American.

I love Matt G. He’s so GANGSTA. I want to get his Trivial Pursuit card. I still think he and Danny should trade places, so Matt can get an extra song.

  • dsp

going to the tour for my favs but i am looking forward to matt’s performances– he is a great singer and very personable

I found your post interesting, Tess. For 8 years I was an assistant to a woman who was a human resources vice president at one of the largest food companies in the U.S. She alternately called herself black or African American. She most often, however, referred to herself as a person of color. I think she also identified with Hispanics and people of Asian descent as being a minority. She identified with me, most definitely, as a woman.

I googled this and found an interesting Gallup poll http://www.gallup.com/poll/28816/black-african-american.aspx
I just don’t think a label means all that much…it’s how you identify ultimately.

Honestly I was never keen on African/American, I prefer Black/American or I just refer to myself as Black.

Love the interview, thanks so much for posting it. Matt is charming as usual.

  • auntieaimee

Aw, I heart Matty G. I really hope that he gets a chance to record, because I think he’s so talented. He seems like such a sweetie!

  • hollygo9

That’s not the best picture of Matt there.

  • colette

edit: WAYYY OFF TOPIC. No thread jacking

  • nuttin2lose

u can watch Allison’s interview at the end.

  • PalmettoStateRocks

Matt rocks. So talented, funny, smart and unassuming. I hope he’s the tour’s breakout star.

  • Squirrely

I like Matt in his fedora’s more than baseball caps.

  • PattyH

Matt is doing Tweet bubbles, along with Anoop and Danny. I love modern technology! This bubble thing is awesome!
This is Anoop’s but Matt is in it too.

Black, White, Red or yellow Matt Giraud rocks!! I feel like he will be this season’s breakout star and I am anxious to see and hear him post-idol both on the tour and after!!

Loving me some Matty G!! (and yes he is so gansta lol) :cool1_tb:

I just watched this again and was struck by how much Matt looked at someone off-camera before he answered some of the questions. Man, Idol keeps close watch on what these guys say, right? I noticed in Anoop’s interview (I think), he wouldn’t reveal one of his songs until he got off-camera permission.

  • snood199

I actually love one of Matt’s hats!
Of course, I am a crazy Phillies fan. Still, great hat Matt.

  • JosieX

He has the most endearing personality, I just love Matt. His “My Funny Valentine” is one of my favorites of the season. It sounds like Danny will be set with his deal soon, and I hope Matt is next. Not necessarily for a record deal with 19, but at least something like a really great collaboration with someone that will keep him moving forward. I think he will eventually get a record deal. He has such a beautiful recording voice, it would be a real shame if he didn’t.

  • adh1018

I really like Matt. He seems like such a good guy. I look forward to seeing him on tour

I’m still crossing my fingers on Danny. He hasn’t let us know yet.

Anyway, I hope Matt is next too. I think he is very talented, and I really wouldn’t be surprised if he gets a deal and is successful. I actually prefer him to Kris, but do think that Kris was more consistent on the show.

Matt does seem like a very personable guy.

  • suebrody

The coolest thing about Matt is that he says if he can’t get a record deal he will just keep on playing music. How awesome is that?! I cannot wait to see him on Tour, wearing his awesome fedoras. He is charming times 1000.

I hope he gets a record deal, in any case, b/c he would make a VERY good record, and I would definitely buy it. Kradison and Matt are my Top 4 for sure.

  • SarahP

Matt’s got an amazing smile. his personality shows when he smiles and laughs, and he didnt do that much during the show, probably scared to death of Simon.

too bad we couldn’t get to see more of the contestants this year cos otherwise Matt would have on of my early favourites! his smile has won me over :wub_tb:

  • maracaibo

Awww. Matt is just such a nice. nice guy.
I wish him all the success in the world.
I am actually a bit sad at the moment, that no one has offered him a record deal.
He records so well! I was so looking forward to buy an album from him!

I think it would be a shame if he is not signed after the tour by someone else. He has potential. I am looking forward to see what he does on tour.

    Best of luck Matty G!

He just got a new haircut and he looks mighty fine, sans the baseball cap.

  • liberty

You’re in LA brotha, you should represent the Dodgers.

I liked this guy, I only really watched the show for Allison and Adam but this guy really impressed me. Best of luck to Matt and can’t wait to see what kind of music he puts out.

I loved his version of “Human Nature”, “Let’s Get it On”, “My Funny Valentine”, “Have you ever loved a woman”….ok maybe i watched the show more for Matt than Adam&Allison.

    Cheers!

I noticed in Anoop’s interview (I think), he wouldn’t reveal one of his songs until he got off-camera permission.

I noticed that too. Kind of funny considering Adam has revealed his ENTIRE set while the others seem so timid about it. What a rebel against the AI machine :wink_wp:

  • jmds88

Love Matt. He’s such a great guy and musician. I hope he gets a record deal, at least an indie one, come ooooon! It’d be such a shame to let this talent go to waste.

  • ross

    He’s a great guy
