Matt Giraud headed down to Miami Beach today to appear on Live with Regis and Kelly. Once again, a relaxed Matt performs a beautiful version of Carrie Underwood’s “So Small”–one of his best on Idol, but even better this morning.

Watch the video after the JUMP…

OMG OMG OMG!!! This was just so good. I loved the piano solo and the added riffs from last time. That sounded great! Right after a good performance on Ellen, the performance now is as great! WOOT! Go Matt!!!

For his personal safety…please don’t allow Kara to see this.

  • TheRealLife

Wow I am speechless! This was just beautiful. He should still be on the show damn it! Truly this guy is an amazingly talented musician/vocalist!

  • maracaibo

Matt! Once again that was awesome.
If only those nerves would have disappeared on the AI stage. Sigh.

    Relaxed Matt is incredible Matt.

I hope he gets a record deal after all is said and done. I think he has lots of potential. JMHO.

    Lol! On Kara.

  • Laurie

Love this guy! I have a feeling he will do very well in the long run.

  • MusicLover252

Wow! I am enjoying this so much more than the machinations of Idol right now. He is just so talented and a true musician. I loved the keyboards and he sounds and looks fantastic. Amazing talent and I wish him every success.

  • jumpstart

Oh Matt… Matt… Matt. Why in the hell could you not do this on AI? :wallbash_tb:

  • primeminister

This was really good, but his performance “Let’s Get it On” on Ellen is still my favorite. :)

Amazing–who knew Matt could stay in tune for a whole song, heh! Just kidding…I think Matt will be one of those contestants I like more after being booted. He’s like 100 times better when he isn’t nervous.

Thanks for posting this, mj! :)

  • stelladallas

Excellent on the piano, but vocal not so good.

  • AInoob

That was great! I really hope he finds success post-Idol. I like his voice and would definitely buy his music.

  • idolbeat

Without bandzilla, Matt is awesome. His vocals and piano playing are just beautiful and that piano solo – loved it!

Michael Slezak chose So Small as one of the best performances of Season 8, calling it better than the original! Big words but so true! If you can make one of Carrie’s songs better than hers, I think you have a great future in store!

  • Cindyy

    Oh, Matt. So amazing. (:

  • tierbee

Huh, post-show Matt almost makes me want to see the tour. Granted there are several that I’d have to skip :) but… I liked Matt on the show but he’s so much better off the show and relaxed.

  • SharB

IN like this performance. The nerves are truly gone. It seems being judged is very hard on them and some can overcomoe the nerves and perform well while others flounder. Hopes Matt does well in his career. Not truly my cup of tea, but I’m sure there are fans out there somewhere.

  • Asmcqu01

Man he sounds fantastic here! Love his voice and w/out the nerves he is just amazing! I’m sure he will have a great career and LMAO at Kara! Yes please keep this away from her for Matt’s on safety!

BTW that keyboard solo was terrific!

  • flicker

I do love Matt. Thanks so much for this vid; I wouldn’t have seen it otherwise. :)

I’ve come to terms with the fact that Matt just wasn’t cut out for the Idol stage; nerves and all that, it’s been said dozens of times. But, I’m so glad he took the leap and auditioned, and kept trying. We got to see him and hear him, and his fans saw something very compelling in him, even through the nerves. It makes me happy that more people are enjoying him now that he’s off the show.

I think he has an excellent chance of having the career he wants after idol. His dream is pretty modest, compared to a lot of ex-idols. He wants to be a good musician. He wants to travel the country, playing small venues, to crowds of 3 or 4 hundred. I think that’s very realistic; maybe it helps in the after-idol world to not be over-hyped while you are in the idol machine. Idol is not the real world, that’s been proven many times.

  • JenG

    That was awesome! Go Matt!

  • brandi

Wow- HOT DAMN MATT !! Another sensationally performance.!!! Ellen’s was just as good, but a touch HOTTER ! haha Good for you Matt. I hope the people that did not vote for you feel like complete asses right now. So glad when Kara said she felt you weren’t into your performance for My Funny Valentine you said to her I was, I was.
Isn’t it funny how they use the SAME old lines. You SCHOOLED her. lol Matt you’ll do fine on your own. Miss you sooooo much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Again, he just shines!

After The IDOLATRY interview with Matt, I can see why the others liked him so much. He is personable and funny. I think he is limited in what he can do genrewise, but he can make it.

Go Matt! Love love love So Small, love him. I wish he nailed it on Idol every week, because when he did, it was amazing. Damn those nerves. I will be looking out for his music– he has a great recording voice. My only complaint about the Idol iTunes singles is that I didn’t always love the bandzilla accompaniment as much as I love Matt’s own improv-style piano playing.

I finally figured out who Matt reminds me of, and why I love him so much. Jon McLaughlin! Not voice or style even, but in terms of musicianship, and the piano thing, where they get instantly hotter on the keys, haha. JM has some great songs, so I dunno, if Matt can write or get great songs, I definitely see him having JM-size success. Which would be great.

  • pb27

Such a fantastic performance. Really lovely vocals, and the piano playing is just amazing.

  • weese

I am almost glad Matt was not there for rock night. These performances really allow him to shine as the Idol stage never did. If Gokey is not going tonight I will have to hope Kris leaves. He will get this kind of exposure at #4. He won’t get it if he goes out at three.

Also, does anyone see a resemblance in face and speaking voice to Vince Vaughn? Go Matt – all the way to your first CD success!

  • wjmtv

He’s gonna do a Daughtry. Go Matt!

  • Victoria

For his personal safetyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦please donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t allow Kara to see this.

    :lol_tb:

So Small is one of my favorite performances of the season so far. Matt’s not my favorite, but I really like him and I hope he does well. If this is the kind of thing that’s going to be on his album, I can guarentee him at least one buyer.

WHO CAN TEACH THEMSELVES TO PLAY THE PIANO LIKE THAT IN FIVE YEARS?!

Holy amazingness. Matt Giraud is such an incredible musician and artist! I am going to buy everything he sells, guaranteed! Someone better grab this boy quick!

  • hypertwink

Idolatry was awesome. I love the humor and the self-awareness that he has (and also. I love the subtle little digs that he throws in…at the judges, etc). No wonder it’s been reported that a every one wanted to be his BFF.

WHO CAN TEACH THEMSELVES TO PLAY THE PIANO LIKE THAT IN FIVE YEARS?!

    Mind-boggling.

  • IdolThoughts

He’s awesome. I have faith that he’ll do well.

  • sma11ie

    Idolatry was awesome.

Big huge word. I wished that interview had 8 parts. I was so bummed when I got to the end of part 4! He’s so charming and funny and self-deprecating, and has such an obvious love for music.

  • s0x_prisoner

    Matt is frickin’ incredible.

  • tessa

Matt’s looking and sounding great once again! I expected nothing less. He’s such an amazing talent, just pure and raw. I’ve never seen a more versatile singer and musician. He can sing any genre and make you feel the emotions.

I was so sad he wasn’t on the show last night. But I was partly glad too because I knew that, had he been there, he would have been the judges’ punching bag despite a beautiful soulful piano rock rendition of “The Simple Man” that he was planning to do for Rock week. They just couldn’t appreciate his versatility, forcing him into a box and crushing his confidence. Matt’s better off in the real world. And yes, this humble, talented young man has modest dreams that he will easily achieve, but bigger things are in store for his future! Keep living your dreams, Matt!

Record labels better scurry and sign up this guy!

  • poisnivy

ahh Matt.. what can I say.. I love this guy, he’s SUCH an amazing musician! A true talent and I can’t wait to support him and his career :)

way to go Matt! the TRUE winner of season 8! :)

  • mandabutter

Love this side of Matt. I’m a huge fan of Jon McLaughlin, James Morrison, and Mat Kearney. If Matt could go that route – he do his thing and SAYNNNNGG. I keep watching the Idolatry vids over and over. Too cute! He will do great things!! I can’t wait!!! Love you Matt Giraud!

  • bjames

man…why didn’t he just play piano and sing on the show more often? he’s truly in his element there.
