Matt Giruad will be hosting an online talent competition called Make the Cut.

What is Make the Cut?

Make the Cut, hosted by American Idol Matt Giraud, is a reality contest for singers and vocalists. The contestant left standing after this multi-round, progressive-elimination competition will be declared the Grand Prize Winner and will ‘“ quite literally ‘“ Make the Cut: that is, the winner will cut a recording at the southeast Michigan studio with the encouragement and under the guidance of Matt Giraud and other industry professionals.

Should be fun, though I still hope he gets signed after the tour.

  • rockvixen

Why is Matt hosting this showwhen he hasn’t even made the cut yet? No reputable label has signed him yet I mean.

  • sunsurger

This is a joke, right? Matt is going to judge talent in an unbiased way? This guy is jealous and doesn’t even acknowledge the talent of contestants with “real” talent!

His dislike of Adam has been real apparent in many videos! I’ve never said a word against him before but his comments last night were just plain nasty and IMO the true Matt G.!

  • Adamdebomb

What is YOBI? Is this going to air on TV?

  • papercut

I actually used to like Matt but recently, he comes off as a jealous person. I don’t know why he wouldn’t pick up the letter and just give it to Adam. I mean, other contestants do it all the time every year.

I thought Adam and him were really good friends considering in the program book, they were all asked who was their best friend on the show and Adam said that Matt was one of his best friends on the show and that he really connected with him. On the other hand, Matt’s answer to the same question didn’t include Adam nor Kris. I guess Matt is really just jealous of the attention that Adam was getting everywhere. I personally found what Matt said to that fan was a little rude. His response was less than stellar. He could have just ignore it or just said something that didn’t show off his diva attitude.

  • dsp

Good for Matt- I’m glad he got this gig. And as an adam fan I hope he doesn’t take all the Mattgate comments to heart—he has an obligation to his own fans and we all say things that we wish we had not said or didn’t mean.

    LOL! Irony, I luv it.

  • AIfan7488

I find it ridiculous that people would judge Matt based on one freaking action. So I guess i’ll just assume that these people who say Matt’s rude, jealous or a jerk have NEVER ever done or said something that could be misconstrued. Look no one’s perfect and people need to get over it.

We all need to stop overanalyzing every little thing that the idols do because I think we all know that if any of us were scrutinized this closely, we wouldn’t come off looking any better than they do.

  • holly417

I personally think Matt will do great on this project! If you actually watch the promo for it.. You can tell he will be a huge help to the kids trying out. Can’t wait to watch!!

He does not come across as jealous to me at all. He seems like a really nice guy. I wouldn’t be picking up letters people are throwing on the ground either.

  • hazuki

Wow at the people here, are you guys serious? Matt G isn’t jealous of Adam, infact they are close friends. They have no problem with eachother, and you guys are looking in the whole matt-gate way too much, Like seriously, get over it.

  • flicker

What is YOBI? Is this going to air on TV?

Adamdebomb, it is an online talent contest, not on TV.

I think Matt will be very kind to the contestants, and I do think he has a lot to offer them. He has experience that they do not, both recording and performing. I know he’s learned a lot in the last year; it shows in his performance on tour.

  • Renina

Good luck to Matt. I really think that he could do well at this (and whatever else he has lined up for himself). I hope this gets posted because I think that Matt needs to know that he has more support out there, and that not everyone is taking this whols business too seriously.

And a special thanks to all the people out there who don’t take all of this too seriously. We all just wanna play music for a living. Abotu 11 hours ago from Mgiraudofficial.

You are welcome Matt, You’re welcome…

  • JosieX

Matt didn’t handle that one interaction very well but I measure that against the countless times I’ve seen videos of him being charming and funny, and chalk it up to just a bad moment. I think he is a great guy, I really like him. I sure don’t want what happened to Danny to happen to him, that kind of thing is just too tiresome.
I think that Matt will do a great job at this, and he has shown an ability to put an amusing spin on something just off the cuff (think of the Slezak interview). I hope he’ll get signed soon and I hope that this show gives him a good platform to keep his name out there and gain new fans.

  • Grammie Kari

Until Matt has signed a recording contract and has a hit song, he hasn’t made the cut yet! Matt may well be kind to the contestants, but I don’t think he is the right person for this gig.

In my mind, Matt will ALWAYS be the 6th place contestant who was “saved by the judges.” Anoop WAS the person who was in the TOP 5.

Would someone please tell me what Matt said to a fan?

  • JosieX

I just watched the video, and it never ceases to amaze me that this kid never had a piano lesson, and in fact I thought I read not too long ago that he is just learning to read music. Yet he plays the piano beautifully, better than a lot of people who studied it for years. I think he deserves more props for his innate musicality – you can see it even in the way he gave feedback in that clip. Most of us listen to music and know if we like it or don’t like it, but don’t really have the capability to quickly come up with creative ideas for how to make it better – see the AI judges for Exhibit A on that! ;)

  • primeminister

I liked Matt on the show, but this is a little odd for his first post-idol career move. Like someone pointed out earlier, Matt hasn’t really “made the cut” himself. Well, good luck to him.

  • flicker

Well, it’s not like the winner of this competition wins a recording contract. They win a trip to Michigan and a chance to record at a Michigan studio, something Matt himself has done, before his stint on Idol. And they win some prizes. It’s not a stretch at all for him to be working on this show. It’s a Michigan-based enterprise, and a lot of people in his state are proud of him.

This is a joke, right? Matt is going to judge talent in an unbiased way? This guy is jealous and doesn’t even acknowledge the talent of contestants with ‘real’ talent!

To be fair the article says he is hosting the show, not judging.

It’s probably a decent paycheck, which believe it or not he still needs after the tour is over.
I hope he makes records too, but he has to keep all avenues open and I can’t fault him for it.

  • js

I’m still hoping someone signs him.

  • hwc

An online talent show seems about right for the kind of gigs that an Idol also-ran can expect. Throw in some radio promo gigs, maybe doing some red carpet interviews for an internet show. Look at Ace Young. Props to Matt for striking while the iron is hot. I hope all the Idols do well.

  • HappyDaisy

Can someone please share the short version for those of us who missed “Mattgate” (?). Matt said something not nice about Adam? A fan letter was involved? A one time thing at the buses?

  • idolbeat

Making it to the top 5 out of 100,000 plus auditioners is making the cut to me!

  • JosieX

As to “Mattgate”, here is my understanding of what happened. It is not that big of a deal I don’t think, but a mistake that he’ll likely learn from since I have no doubt that he’s a really nice guy.

It happened by the buses where fans were waiting. Adam walked by but didn’t stop, and a little girl tossed a letter to him but he didn’t see it. An adult man who was Twittering the show said that he got Matt’s attention and asked if he would pick it up and give it to Adam. Matt was busy with fans who wanted his picture etc. and said something along the lines that he wasn’t Adam’s messenger and I think added that he hoped that he got it. It would have been much better if he had just said “I’m sorry, I can’t right now” or “I’ll try to stop back later”. Making the smart remark is what opened him up to accusations of jealousy, etc. I think if Matt had known that the letter was from a little girl that he would have handled it differently, but I’m sure he has learned something from it. The person who sent the Twitter has said that he thinks Matt is a good guy and he did not intend to open the floodgates of hell upon him, so to speak. I think that’s about it.

  • yinyang

At first, I thought this was strange, but this could be a great move for Matt. Not only does it give him more exposure, it might let him move into a Ryan Seacrest type of role hosting on-line events. Who knows, this could be a really smart move on Matt’s part.

I hope that the AI people learn from “Matt-gate”, too. If they had gone out and given the crowd a chance to send things to Adam, even though Adam wasn’t up to it himself, that might have prevented this whole thing. Just a quick announcement to the crowd that Adam wasn’t able to join them, but they could collect things for Adam, if anyone had anything. I’m guessing that Matt’s comment is being blown way out of proportion, and was really no big deal. And, I’m an Adam fan.

These kids have a really tough schedule, are under lots of pressure, and are learning the ropes. We all make mistakes, especially when we’re new at doing something, like these kids are with touring.

  • Squirrely

Matt and Adam are fine, there is no feud or issues between them. Check out Matt’s latest bubble tweet

    http://twitter.com/MGiraudOfficial

These guys are like brothers and sisters incidents and disagreements wash away like water. Last night was already forgotten for them.

As for the show he’s hosting, it may not be something I would watch but good for Matt for scoring it.

  • BCU79

I guess it is good for the Idol contestants to keep their name out there anyway they can. But I don’t know if it’s always the best move to take the first opportunity that comes your way. Don’t most Top 10 contestants pound the pavement for a while before turning to the hosting/interviewing gigs?

  • wand3rful

sounds like a small, side project that probably wont require much involvement…..we’ll probably see more idols get attached to random projects as the months progress. like someone said above…good to keep his name in circulation

and im shaking my head in disbelief at this stupid matt-gate …..poor guy, he is not anyone personal assistant. that guy who started the tweeting mess should be ashamed of himself….grown azz man..an ADULT…acting like a jealous gossipy 12yr old girl. pathetic.

  • HappyDaisy

Thanks for the “scoop,” JosieX. Your write-up of the situation was thoughtful.

I’m generally reluctant to believe gossip like that especially if it was based on only one Tweet and cannot be verified with a video/audio. :) If a pattern of such reports were to develop (which I doubt will happen), then I’d start to wonder… As you said, though, if that’s what happened, a good lesson for Matt and the other Idols on the importance of public relations. The Idols on tour are going to be in the sharp spotlight of the public eye and so it’s in their interest to keep that in mind when out at the buses — even when fatigued from the demanding tour.

, MJ posted a note from the gentleman who sent the tweet and he was sorry for the reaction and said Matt was a nice guy.

Hope things work out for Matt and the project. Michigan is a nice place to visit!
