Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly interviews a funny and relaxed Matt Giraud. Topics of discussion include arranging his own music, being forced into a box by the judges and Matt’s penchant for pushing the envelope vocally.

I saw this yesterday and thought he was great! Loved his personality! Poor guy’s nerves just got to him, I guess. I think he was incorrect with this strategy, though. Eclectic has never really worked on Idol. I personally hated the riffing, too. But good luck to him. Seems like a fun guy.

    hahaha I love this interview!!

It’s so nice to see what I think is the REAL MATT. I wish he was more like this on the show (I’m sure he is off-camera), but I wish he was this loose during his performances. I think his nerves got the best of him because I kno he’s capable of being better. I doubt that he had any chance of winning even if he was at his best (sry matt fans) BUT, I’m still a HUGE fan of his and I absolutely LOVED this interview.

    He’s hilarious too :)

Matt comes across as such a fun, down to earth humble guy.
I can understand now why all his fellow contestants wanted him to get saved .
He must be so much fun to be around!
Slezak really enjoyed talking to him, you could tell. Best Idolatry interview ever!

Matt is so talented. I hope he gets signed after the show is over.
    He has so much potential.
He proved that once again with his Ellen and R&K performances.
With no stress and pressure he is a force to be reckon with. Plus, his sound is very current. JMHO.

I adore this Matt — funny, confident, good-natured but very snarky. I love this interview and somehow, I felt a little teary-eyed when he was telling Slezak that he’s not The Amercian Idol but what he;s good at is sitting in front of a piano and entertaining people. *sniff*

  • primeminister

I enjoy how self-effacing he comes across. Thanks for posting this, mj!

  • ettacandy

Hilarious and insightful. I really hope he finds his footing as a working musician. So talented!

  • maturin

What a freakin adorable kid. I love how happy music seems to make him.

On Idol he recorded better then he came across live, but his live was pretty enjoyable, if uneven. So Small still a highlight! Hope this all works out for his career.

There’s one bit, though, where he talks about all his riffing, and Michael Slezak gently points out that it didn’t always work out so well, and Matt says that in order to come across big in the contest you have to be showy and “can’t just come out and sing a very beautiful simple song”–and I was thinking “hello, that is what KRIS did!”

  • Cindyy

I see what you are saying, but sometimes that doesn’t work for everyone, you know? (:

But I loved this interview with Matty! So amazing, he is! :D

  • maturin

You are right, Cindyy. just thought it was ironic.

Matt sure is self-aware and charming and has been, if anything, better in his post-show songs, so go Matty!

  • bluejeans

I wasn’t a fan of Matt earlier in the show but he really impressed me the last few weeks he was on Idol. And this interview…I love how happy-go-lucky he is.

  • sma11ie

I watched this yesterday and had to watch again. Love him! He wasn’t the smartest contestant in terms of strategy (too eclectic), and he definitely didn’t seem to know his own limits/how to do songs that showcase the best of himself the way that Kris did, but for me, he was always the most appealing contestant from Season 8. He wasn’t cut out for this competition, but I really believe he is cut out for the music industry. I don’t see him getting signed by 19, but I see him putting out good music for a long long time. Just hope things happen for him the way they have for Brooke, MJ, etc. Looking forward to it.

  • maracaibo

You don’t think 19 will sign him? I actually think they will.

  • ross

Hilarious, especially the last part; he really made Slezak laugh! Me, too. What a great guy, I can see why everyone loved him so much.

  • pb27

This was a really hysterical interview. Funny to see the two of them get along so well.

I especially enjoyed how humble Matt is, and how he seems very grounded and reflective of his Idol experience.

  • CRB

Matt was like a different person in this interview vis-a-vis his nervous, somewhat annoying Idol persona. It’s amazing what massive stress can do to a person. If he didn’t have his hat/growth camouflage on I might not have recognized him.

  • tessa

I think Matt’s strategy was to show what he is as a musician and singer, which is well-rounded, regardless of the conventional expectations of the judges and the Idol audience that a contestant should stick to ONE genre. He said he wasn’t thinking about winning, and therefore didn’t sacrifice what he was at heart for the sake of votes. It’s too bad that America wasn’t ready for his eclectic taste and talent in music but I think the real world might be. I hope so! He’s too talented to be ignored. Just listen to his studio recordings. There’s a market out there for him, those who don’t care to listen to ONE sound song after song throughout an album. I think Matt’s versatility makes him unique and it’s his soulful voice that would make him identifiable. Recording companies better be smart and grab him!

Keep it up, Matt! You have a bright future ahead!

  • idolbeat

He looks so joyful and very real – no airs about him; he does have a contagious happiness that even when faced with a clear non-supporter, he breaks down the “I am not going to love you at all costs Slezak” into a smiling, laughing semi-fan – he thaws the ice, and I actually think MS is crushing on him now! :)

  • sammi

I loved this all, but the last part was really great. What a great sense of humor.

  • brandi

That was such a good interview. Matt seems like such a fun guy to hang with. Great sense of humor, humble guy with a passion for music. Someone said in their comment, he seemed annoying on Idol. No way, never even thought that. I liked him from day one. Great entertainer of music and he and Slezak seemed to be having a blast. Good for you Matt, you will do just fine after Idol. It’s a great start. Haven’t watched Idol since you left. No reason too. You are my FAVORITE !!! :)

  • bean99

I really enjoyed his interview. It’s nice to see his sense of humor.

  • cacity87

Matt is amazing. Everything about him, his personality is just the cherry on top!

Can’t wait to hear him make great music!! I will pay anything for an album from Matt and to see him headlining his own tour one day.

Matt Giraud is actually an artist that I believe will be around making music for decades to come…

Matt has an awesome personality. I just watched both his and Anoop’s Idolatry videos today and I am impressed by them both. I wish them both a lot of success – they deserve it. If the singing doesn’t work out for Matt, I’d love to hire him to sit in my office and talk to me all day!

  • brandi

OMG I could watch this video over and over again. By far, one of the BEST interviews by MS on the Idol contestants. Matt, i know you do well with your artistry as a musician, and you could also do something with television, your performance on Ellen and here, definitely showed how comfortable you are by just being yourself. Good luck to you always. You are ONE OF A KIND :) !!!!!!!
