Mariah Carey on Nicki Minaj Feud: “It Felt Like an Unsafe Work Environment” (UPDATED) (VIDEO)

Barbara Walters sat down with new American Idol judge, Mariah Carey, for an interview that will air on the ABC news show tonight at 11:35/10:35c.

She talks about her kids, her music and her husband, Nick Cannon’s battle with a life threatening illness. But of course, ya’ll want to know what she has to say about Nicki Minaj:

“It felt like an unsafe work environment,” Carey said. “Anytime anybody’s reeling threats at somebody, you know, it’s not appropriate. I’m a professional. I’m not used to that type of environment.”

As a result, Carey said she hired more security.

“I just felt it was the appropriate thing to do,” she said. “Sitting there on the road with two babies, I’m not going to take any chances.”

Minaj has denied saying anything about a gun, calling the statement a “fabrication.” When ABC News asked her for comment for this story, her representative said “she’s said what she’s saying on this topic.”

“For all the drama, I hope it helps the show,” Carey said. “I think it’s a classic, classy show and it didn’t need this.”

So, Mariah DID hire more security as a a result of her tiff with Nicki. And she’s still insists she was “threatened.” I hope that Barbara asks more specifically about the alleged gun threat. Both Nicki and Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe denied that it happened.

Check later for the actual interview. I’ll add the pertinent preview clips to this post. Barbara will also be promoting the interview on The View today.

Barbara Walter and the Ladies from the View talk about the feud. Check out clips from tonight’s interview. Mariah is sticking to her story that she heard that Mariah threatened to shoot her.

Why am I not surprised that this issue comes up again as the promotion for Idol ramps up? Will Mariah reveal exactly what Nicki allegedly said and how she learned about it? Usually, Barbara really softballs her celeb interviews, and considering that she and Mariah are friends, I don’t necessarily trust that the real story will be presented.

I got to say, I’m probably gonna enjoy the judging aspect of the show much more this year than I have in a long time lol

The less I see of the judges, the better.  They aren’t the reason I watch Idol.  Although it’s customary to have them, I can’t see that they perform any necessary function once finals start.  Sorta like men’s ties.

They are talking about this interview on The View right now and I’m totally distracted by the ridiculous glasses Barbara has on. WTF? Anyone else see this?

  • fantoo1

Nigel said in an interview that he doesn’t plan on showing feud on tv. I guess we will see what happens!

So… they’re milking this again to promote the show?

    Typical…

I’d say that Mariah’s doing it self-servingly of her own accord to make herself look like a classy unjealous non-diva. She’s still trying to get people on her side and dispel the negative image of her desperately wanting to be the only female on the panel in an attempt to get a J.Lo-style career revival.

It’s not that hard considering Nicki Minaj was the one yelling in the video (we didn’t see how Mariah was antagonizing her though) but Mariah’s probably trying to cement a squeaky-clean victim story.

Well that’s one way to resurrect a smoldering fire … pour gasoline on it.  Or in this case start talking about it again.

If I had been threatened, as Mariah apparently had, I doubt I would be talking about it again months later for fear of waking the sleeping dragon.  If the fear was real but the drama is mostly behind us why comment again.  Mariah talks about keeping it classy, but to me the classier response would have been something along the lines of “We had some growing pains as a panel but I believe that’s all behind us now.  Now is the time for us to focus on the talent we’ve found and see where the season takes us”.

I’m not necessarily a fan of Nicki’s but I can see how it might pi$$ her off to have this dredged up again.  I might also be pi$$ed that controversy is being stirred just before the season premier at my expense.

Classy?  IDK – where is it?

I don’t know, say what you will, but there are more and more people who are saying how they haven’t seen the show in ages are now interested in watching this diva showdown. I mean, that is not why I started watching Idol myself, but it seems that is becoming more of the consensus outside the bubble. Hopefully the contestants this season have enough talent and pizzaz to outweigh the drama by the judges.

But some of the extra attention on the judges has to go to the press. I mean, all the press these days talk about in terms of Idol contestants is Jennifer, Kelly. Carrie and Adam, with a few random Idol acts being talked about here and there. Even the press says, “what about the contestants”, and I’m thinking, well you sure spend a good amount of time talking about Nicki and Mariah. I think these shows do try (but sometimes don’t always succeed) in casting the best talent, but if the press keeps going on about the judges, then maybe that’s what they rather talk about sadly :(

Yep, I have seen people on twitter talk about how they are excited for Idol for the first time in their lives just because they want to see Nicki and Mariah fight. I saw a tweet along the lines of “I never watch that show, but I will watch this year just to see the Catfights!”

  • usedtobelucy

I’m sorry that I’m so extremely sick of these two women already.

“Mariah is sticking to her story that she heard that Mariah threatened to shoot her.”

If it happened, it would be actually much more funny than the alleged story.  Sybil Mariah.

I suppose Barbara Walters will keep working until she croaks in front of the camera.  In case she’s been giving any thought to retirement, maybe somebody should tell her she’s old enough at 83.

Is it at all possible that Nigel threw Harvey Levin at TMZ a bone and Harvey blew it out of proportion and invented the part where Nicki threatened to shoot Mariah? And Nigel called Harvey and said, “What are you going to do if the police take that seriously and show up asking questions? You’re a lawyer. Can’t you get sued for libel for something like that?” And Harvey realized he went too far and claimed Idol producers invented the whole feud to save his own ass from getting sued? That’s the story I’m thinking.

I want to see some terrific contestants and I want these judges to be fair, honest, and able to communicate properly to the contestants.  However, we know Idol will manipulate the situation whenever they can.
