Mariah Carey Lip Syncing AGAIN at the BET Awards? (VIDEO)

So, what’s the deal with ex-American Idol judge, Mariah Carey, supposedly lip syncing AGAIN at Sunday night’s BET awards?

Watch the video. It sure sounds like the studio track of #Beautiful. And neither Mariah nor Miguel seem to be singing live.

Mariah was also accused of lip syncing a medley of her hits on the American Idol finale. She sang live when she and Miguel hit the GMA concert series. But, uh. Maybe she SHOULD have lip synced, as the west coast version of her performance was obviously cleaned up.

Could the problem be that she can no longer hit those whistle notes she’s known for?

The amazing vocal ability of a diva in her 20’s is long, long gone. I guess she’d much rather be considered a lip sync’er, than destroy the illusion of her still having that voice

  • heartly

She’s done a mixture of live and lipped vocals for years now and it’s always been annoying. It’s annoying that one of “THE voices” resorts to doing this thing during her live posing… I mean, live performances. It’s also annoying that she feels the need to be so perfect with the illusion of these performances and voice that this is the option that they choose to go with. I said the same thing about Beyonce and lipgate at the Inauguration. The need for perfection by some that supersedes the “in the moment” nature, good bad and inbetween, makes me sad. It’s because of this that I’ll rarely make a comment if someone hits a bum note or is a little rough around the edges when they actually sing live…within reason, there’s always some that I wish were lip synching instead. ;)

There’s a time and place for it, but when you are primarily known for being one of the great voices (and there’s a group of them that fit in this category) even if the voice clearly isn’t at the same level it once was, there is no place for it, imo. Especially if it’s within the act’s control.

That was sad. She needs to talk with Chaka Khan who gracefully accepted the change in her vocal abilities and hired back up singers that were capable of reaching the notes she no longer could. With shrewd arrangements of her hits, and the confidence in her legacy to allow her back up singers the spotlight, she has not missed a beat.

  • Kariann Hart

Just saw a performance of Chaka Khan and understand what you mean. Still powerful, but different. Aretha’s voice has changed but it doesn’t take away from her performance. She should have been LIVE on the Idol Finale. I think Mariah simply doesn’t want to acknowledge that she’s aging.

Shes Mariah Freaking Carey. sad Mariah Carey feels she has to lip sync, but she probably has lost her vocal ability. Christina Aguilera is in the beginning stages of losing hers too. She can’t sing as well LIVE as she used to. But at least Christina still attempts to sing LIVE…for now. Its going to be a sad day again when another vocal genius feels the need to lip sync.

There was no excuse for this except that she cant hit those notes and doesnt sound well singing live. And it was so obviousl. Folllowing how she looked on Idol, youd think she wouldnt have done it a second time. I wish all these shows and awards would either ban lip synching or make sure there was a disclaimer on the screen that the performers arent actually singing. Im losing respect for any artist who lip s ynchs, esp all the time

  • Ari

Well a lot of the songs shes sung in recent years have been hip hop songs where shes rapping more than singing. Listen to her early records – listen to Vision or Dreams – its nothing like Mariah now

I’m sure a lot of people won’t agree with me on this, but I think the problem is that she was known for the technical aspects of the voice — the amazing range and all that – rather than for her expressive ability. Not that she *couldn’t* express, but it definitely wasn’t her most impressive ability and I doubt that she put a lot of stock in it, but rather focused on the flexibility and beauty of the voice and all the notes she could hit that others couldn’t. .

If she’d been primarily an expressive singer — like Aretha, for example — I expect that she’d be a lot more likely to feel that she can just translate that into her new set of lesser technical capabilities. And just move on giving performances that have many of the qualities that she used to have. That’s what Aretha and others — such as Placido Domingo in another realm, for example — have done. And they don’t really even miss a beat and are still wonderful to listen to and, it looks like, quite happy performing.

But the thing that MC was really really really known for, the thing that most set her apart, is gone. So I expect she’s having a hard time getting her mind around the fact that, with her voice as it is now, she’s essentially going to have to learn to perform with an entirely different focus than she did in the past. And she’s probably wondering whether people will still like her this way. Etc.
That’s a tough road for her, but I wish she’d realize that it’s the road she’s got to travel and get on with it, because this is getting old — and embarrassing for her. It’s sad to see.

    Lol No surprise at all.

  • Ronnie D

I first read this on the Dailymail and just knew it would be here LOL. Mariah is getting paid how much to stand up there and lip sync?

  • Fan Dja

I don’t like lip syncing and it makes it much worse when you do a horrid job of it. It’s so obvious.

  • ShukiKato

I backed up Mariah for her Idol performance (which was three performances edited together… with dubbing) and the GMA (professional vid with unedited audio: /watch?v=2HsFgkYnKXY) but this BET performance was completely 100% lipped, being a fan, hey, I’m fine with the criticism because this time it was/is warranted. If you’re a true fan you live with it, it doesn’t mean you have to like it.

That said, it doesn’t mean she’s lost her voice or anything because you can find lipped performances from her as far back as 97 and there are (fan) concert videos from the last couple years which prove her voice is still rather impressive. Here’s hoping the America-the-Beautiful is totally live, otherwise get ready for another Mariah-bash in three days.

  • Beaugard Stevens

She’s a great live singer, she should probably admit to herself she can’t do the whistle notes anymore. I mean, Kelly Clarkson did it on Idol but when she sang the song again, “Natural Woman” she didn’t do it, so I don’t think Kelly can do it anymore and she’s only 30. it’s not the end of the world, it is something Mariah is known for and her fans probably hope for it,but at the end of the day, if you can’t do it anymore, there is no use pushing it.

  • ZsusK

Hmm. I think her voice was shot ages ago. She performed at Michael Jackson’s funeral and she really struggled with the notes.

  • Jake W.

Didn’t she learn her lesson the first time?

  • madmike2276

The problem is, and it’s a BIG one is that she has not been able to hit
them for quite some time, yet her studio versions all seem have’s partly what she’s known for. To me, it’s a bit of fraud.

  • madmike2276

She’s also been known to make some uber snarky comments about other singers for the same thing. She went from extraordinary to above average – she’s living off reputation.

  • lkingcorn

Never a big Mariah fan but it would seem if she is losing some of her power she could make any number of adjustments. Perhaps it’s just that she is afraid of missing a note or sure her fans will still love her.

  • Kariann Hart

Kelly Clarkson has not abused her voice and she sounds mighty good to me!

  • Kariann Hart

I don’t know about a ban. I will accept one or two lip synch performances in a concert if the singer is doing cartwheels and swinmming on a trapeze. However, for these important moments the singer NEEDS to be live. If the song requires special techno sound effects, I don’t mind a back trap like Cher might use. Come on Mariah…

  • Kariann Hart

I meant Aretha’s songs were performed live. I was talking about Mariah. You judge these contestants for live performances and yet you can’t do it?

  • Jordana33

I agree. She’s probably a perfectionist and doesn’t want to give any less than what she was accustomed to doing in the past.

  • Jordana33

But then you’d have to accuse all singers of being frauds, because practically all of them get their vocals adjusted in the studio, probably even less than Mariah.

  • Maya100

But it’s not just the whistle notes, though. She could use a track for those. It’s the high notes generally. They’re shot – if they weren’t she’d sing something with a range of more than a few notes.

  • SteelWauhterz

Aging–that, my friend is the “fear factor”….From her attire to her mannerisms, she still wants to be thought of as a gifted artist in her 20s. She aint! Gladys Knight, jazz singer Nancy Wilson and Lena Horne, all aged gracefully, without a blemish. Life aint fair. Aretha and Chaka have had to learn to roll with the punches, and they have become ever better performers because of their struggle.
