Lady Gaga and Madonna get into a bitch fight during a skit last night on Saturday Night Live. Lady Gaga was the musical guest, Ryan Reynolds hosted.

The skit isn’t very funny, and unfortunately it takes a couple of minutes to get to the bitch slapping and hair pulling.

“Lady Gaga sounds like a baby food,” says Madonna. Ha ha?   PS: Madonna is still a terrible actress. But, a badly written script isn’t helping her.

And *THIS* is why I don’t want Adam near these two divas.

  • Gigi3

Lady Gaga’s second number was a stunner. LOVED it so much. Love HER so much. Her fearlessness reminds me of someone else…

In other news, Madonna looks amazing.

    L.A.M.E.

SNL is NOT starting off strong this season. What is going on? Did they exhaust themselves last year with the epic Tina Fey/Sarah Palin stuff and now just can’t get in sync or what?

And Madonna, I thought your guest stint on “Will & Grace” was the last time we have to see you attempt comedy. That was one of the truly bad guest performances ever. This is right up there with it. And GaGA needs to keep cultivating that silent, weird mystique because in this turn she just looks like a chick in a costume.

I saw Madonna in the David Mamet play, “Speed The Plough” back in the 80′s–one of the more dubious examples of Broadway stunt casting. She was terrible, and I actually felt sorry for her. She was no match up against Joe Silver and Joe Montagna–two really strong actors.

Madonna tried hard to get an acting career off the ground. Even her ex-husband, a well regarded director couldn’t help her. Madonna just cannot act.

  • CRB

Madonna is freakishly well preserved. My compliments to the personal trainer and the surgeon.

She really can’t – but damn she looks good

  • Susan M.

MJ, Madonna + Mamet = YIKES! So sorry you had to experience that.

Madonna is freakishly well preserved. My compliments to the personal trainer and the surgeon.

A couple of weeks ago in Bill Maher’s New Rules he had a photo of Madonna’s arms with all of her sinew and he said, “When your arms begin to look like Clint Eastwood’s penis, it’s time to stop working out.”

I so cannot look at her now without thinking of that line and LOLLing.

“And GaGA needs to keep cultivating that silent, weird mystique because in this turn she just looks like a chick in a costume”
Generally that’s what I see whenever she performs.
Love Madonna but she needs to stay away from SNL and Lady Gaga. That script was so stupid that it’s unfair to critique the acting.

  • jpfan

MJ, I saw her in Speed the Plow as well. She was terrible. Also in person Madonna is tiny. Probably a size 0 so I’m guessing Gaga is just as small. There were some young Madonna fans in the audience watching that Mamet play. Fans of her pop music. That play was torture for them.

Funny story. I saw the newest revival of Speed the Plow last season w/Jeremy Piven and Elizabeth Moss. When the play started, I remembered that I’d seen it before with Madonna. I’d actually blocked out the whole thing because it was so bad. I was looking to exit the theatre but my seat was in the middle of the row. So I had to stay and the play was much better. No Madonna.

Honestly, that’s how bad she was in it. :0

SNL has lost its way. The show is just not funny…at all. I think Lorne Michaels has spread himself too thin and SNL is suffering as a result.

The script was unfunny but Madonna can not act.

Lady Gaga’s last song was really good. Wasn’t expecting that at all.

Best of the night was Ryan Reynolds in a sleeveless shirt…yummy!!! :)

I had a friend in Hollywood in the ’80s who had spent several years in New York working as a playwright and he knew Madonna quite well before she recorded her first album. According to him, at that time, she had little interest in being a singer, she wanted to be an actress. The recording thing started off as some kind of a means to an end, I guess.

    Oh irony of ironies …

  • Matt

Not a huge fan of the sketch, but both of GaGa’s performances were showstoppers. The girl knows how to perform and I like how she is so well rounded when it comes to the piano, guitar, and being a good singer. Every time I’ve seen her perform Paparazzi, it’s never been a similar arrangement to a previous performance. There needs to be more artists out there like her.

  • Finn

I didn’t get Lady GAGA’s second song. Was she trying to pretend that she was a good singer? It wasn’t really working. The singing, piano playing, and the ‘rings’ she was wearing all were really awkward IMO.

  • alaadam

I thought GAGA’s second performance was awesome. She can sang! I wish I could hear her using that voice more often. Luv Papparazi too. Never seen her do two performances the same. It was definitely better than the VMA awards show.

  • spinastory

ummm yeah ok.. how does this help either of them..

  • Heart

Loved Gaga’s musical performances! Love how she uses visual artistry, dances, plays instruments and sings live and in tune, all in the same performance!

I especially appreciated how she made up lyrics special for her New York SNL audience! She is amazing!

All I could think of was wishing it was Adam sitting in-between Madonna and Gaga on the couch instead of the SNL guy. That would have been Hott! Madonna looked great, the skit should have been better.

My favorite part of the show was the last skit with Gaga wearing her bubble outfit along with Andy Samberg! She’s got comedic chops too!

Lady Gaga is fascinating to watch. That 2nd number was WOW. For those who say she cant sing…watch it. It was funny though when she was having a bit of trouble sitting down with that revolving number she had on. But eventually she sat and played the piano, showcasing her vocals.

  • Suzanne

I didn’t see Evita, but I remember seeing decent reviews for her in that film.

That skit was awful–When it was on last night, I couldn’t believe that Madonna would do it. She’s been around long enough that she doesn’t have to be almost naked and doing these humiliating things to get air time.

And what’s up with Lady Gaga. I liked her second song, but thought it was ridiculous that she was sitting at a piano with metal rings around her.

  • FifthHouseSun

Wish GaGa had worn less planet rings and more clothes when showing her musical skills. Clearly she has training. So maybe she intends to re-invent herself as herself. But it’s few steps up from Bikini Girl when you don’t dress with respect for your own abilities. YMMV.

Madonna, what were you thinking? Doing that ill-advised skit was like saying you two were equals. What’s worse, it could have easily been two SNL players dressed as GaGa & Madonna.

  • dv

    terrible

  • Finn

After reading the comments here, praising Lady GaGa, it made me wonder if I’ve been missing something. So, I went and looked at some of her other performances.

I realized that I had only seen her a couple of times, and had judged her on that, plus the negative part of her reputation. I had put a wall up, considering her a phony. After watching more, I started to find her interesting, and more talented than I thought. Then I went back and watched the SNL performance again. I was surprised. I liked it this time.

She seems to have a sense of humour in her presentation and the ability to tell a story. Nothing deep, but still sort of fascinating. Even her dancing is kind of unique; jerky and unpredictable. Plus, now I think her singing is better than she is given credit for.

All this to say, I realized how my prejudging closed my mind. I’m not a super fan, now, or anything, but I def see her differently.

  • Bowie1

And what’s up with Lady Gaga. I liked her second song, but think it was ridiculous that she was sitting at a piano with metal rings around her.

I agree. I kept thinking I could have probably appreciated her vocals and piano playing if I wasn’t so ‘distracted’ from the uh.. ‘gimmick’ of the metal rings that I had to try to see her face through as she played!!

And…Madonna needs to stick to singing. I don’t think there is any “acting” awards in her future! lol

  • Mitla96

Wow, I thought when the second number began, this is a DISASTER, with the rings hitting her in the face and the iffy vocal, but when she sat down at the piano, she saved it.

The Gaga and Madonna skit seemed unrehearsed, and neither one of them was improvising well. They had to keep flashing over to Adam Sandberg’s funny faces to save the skit.

The bubble suit skit was cute, but kinda insidery; I’m not sure a lot of people saw that RS cover.

    Comedy is hard!

  • oceana

Madonna was good in Evita, which was an all-singing role, but otherwise not.

  • Mark

I liked Lady Gaga’s second performance as well. “Showstopper” was not a word that came to mind, but it was still well worth the watch. The first performance, though… well, I give her credit for trying to do something interesting, but the musical qualities fell through in favor of the whole “act”, which isn’t really my thing.

But that skit… ugh. Just hard to watch. I haven’t looked too much at SNL lately, and that certainly didn’t change my mind. Is the show now really consistently that bad?

  • abbysee

Madonna can’t act, and that was torture to watch. Lady Gaga really can sing, and she’s a dynamic performer. Yep, she’s gimmicky, but there is some talent beyond the kitch.

  • freedom_lover

SNL is the same as it has always been. Since the first season it has been hit and miss. The thing is, the hits are so amazing that we are still quoting to this day. Recent hilarity came with Ben Afleck & Target Lady (seen it 20x), James Franco & Cougars, Andy’s Shorts (giraffes!), lots of others.

The trick is to record the show and watch in the morning with the fast forward. Then you don’t feel cheated when a skit falls flat.

  • Truthiness

That skit DID suck and yes, Madonna has never been able to act and never will. Though for me personally I think her best performance was in Dick Tracy, which I love that film visually and I adore Glenne Headly and like some of Sondheim. Plus her role in that film was mostly visual, which is really where her strength lies. “Don’t speak. Don’t speak!” (yes, another film, but it applies).

And I really liked the second performance by Lady GaGa as well and I even liked all the rings, and even at the piano because just her eyes and mouth would be visible to the cameras most of the time with the head on shot, framed as it was by the rings. And even like that she put on an excellent performance of just her voice and piano skills after some weird gyroscope synthed Love Game thang. Well done.

Ummm…I thought it was. So did my son. We turned it off just after…LOL…

  • iluvai

I missed SNL, but I love Lady Gaga. She is awesome and a way better singer than Madonna.

  • hermy

That was pretty lame lol. I liked Lady Gaga’s performance though

  • suebrody

So, I had to watch it. That skit was so unfunny.

I do not understand why GaGa can’t just sing without head gear or a metallic hula hoop. Thankfully, we got to see her face most of the time (and I like the song Paparazzi; that and Just Dance are my favorite songs on her album). At least there was no blood this time. She has a very strong voice, is obviously comfortable on stage (‘hello, SNL,’ LOL) and plays the piano very well, so..just sing, GaGa. JUST SING.

  • Sherena

But… but… if she just sang it wouldn’t be as interesting! Her Saturn hoops are the bomb. They worked better on the Ellen show, but they’re still ridiculous and OTT and strange and lovely. She is in orbit okay? It’s important to be in orbit.

Plus if she just sang she wouldn’t sell :(

  • justjude

IDK, but can’t figure why someone might think it is a comedown for Madonna to be featured with Lady Ga Ga. They are both outrageous
posers and both their reps survive on just how over the top creatively they can be. Neither are great singers but they are both great performers. JMHO. I love Madonna and I’m liking Ga Ga. I find they both do great dance music.
So Madonna is a proven entity with lots of miles of experience and as well, a strange yet compelling off the wall kind of chemistry. Ga Ga, well, she is an infant terrible, who could follow in her wake if she if she can keep a clear vision and has, at least half of Madonnas smarts!!!

I adore Lady Gaga. Saw her live in August when she came to Singapore. She’s a great performer. My only problem was that I was standing too far away to be able to watch her performances clearly. She’s so much more fascinating close-up in front of a TV camera.

I don’t think her album does her justice because not all the songs were great and there wasn’t enough room to allow her develop her best songs (Paparazzi and Poker Face). She works much better as a complete visual act. I hope her next album will have better songs overall and help her build a stronger performance repertoire.

  • Mary102

Lady Gaga was awesome in the performances, but that skit was pretty cringe worthy – talk about awkwardly written and performed. Neither was really up to the task of actually “acting”, but then, as MJ pointed out, the material wasn’t exactly helping them out either. Just bad. You’d think they could come up with something a little more inspired.

  • sr4mjc

The skit was bad, but I really liked the performances, especially the second one.

  • suebrody

Plus if she just sang she wouldn’t sell :(

Well, but isn’t that a problem? I liked her second performance a lot–IMO, it didn’t need a Saturn ring. Maybe that’s just me?
