It’s the third week of auditions for X Factor, Simon Cowell’s UK reality show, and this week’s standout performance appears to be from   18 year old, Lucie Jones, who hails from a small village in Wales.   She decides to (GASP) tackle Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You.”

“Are you sure you want to do that,” warns   Simon.   Yep, she’s going to sing that song–the one that’s been butchered by many a reality show contestant.

But, instead of over-singing it, she performs   a low-key version that impresses the audience and judges alike.

“Lucie, this is why we come to Wales…you didn’t try to impersonate Whitney, you sang it your way…I really like you,” said Simon.

Four enthusiastic yeses from the judges, and Lucie is on to the next round.

What do you think?   The judges found Lucie poignant and vulnerable. I thought she was a little pitchy and lackluster myself.

But, maybe, Lucie is cast as the contestant who finds her confidence over the course of the series.   But so far? I’m not impressed.

It was average-at best. I don’t know why, but it seems like they over-hype EVERYTHING on this show, and Simon is a thousand times nicer. I don’t get it…

  • Valentin432

I wasn’t impressed with any of the auditions this week. There were a ton of bad ones and just 2 goodies if I remember correctly. The other one being a 17 year old diva singing I am telling you.

  • carolinacharms

nobody can impersonate whitney. and especially not this warbler wannabe.

  • http://www.f3properties.com Animated

Not really outstanding. Not so sure why they got so excited over her.
Why is Simon such a nice fellow over there ?

  • http://www.dallascowboys.com GeminiDolly

If she was on American Idol, Simon would have hated this. For some reason he is less brutal on X factor. Weird.

  • Adamme

I like her voice better than the other two contestants from the weeks before. Compare to Danyl and Jamie, her voice is sooooo much better.

  • useless

She has a nice tone to her voice (altho the voice alone was average)and her looks make her marketable. I think that has a lot to do with it for Simon, anyway.

  • carmine2008

I think she has a beautiful voice. Its great that she didn’t go with the usual bombastic vocal acrobatics associated with this song.

  • anthrogeek

They should rename this show “Smarm Factor”. Anyway, why credit Whitney for this song? If you’re going to sing it low-key, why not just credit the originator, Dolly Parton?

  • Sherena

I agree with the judges. Poignant and vulnerable is exactly how I would describe this. I’m not a fan of the bombastic belting of Whitney songs either, I’m looking at you Lil (haha I don’t even remember if she sang a Whitney song, but I know that if she did she would’ve bombastically belted it…)

The tone of her voice is very pretty. I wouldn’t call it beautiful quite yet but it’s very pretty.

I was distracted by how much she looks like Kristen Stewart.

  • Sherena

I like her voice better than the other two contestants from the weeks before. Compare to Danyl and Jamie, her voice is sooooo much better.

Yeah totally. But I’m coming from a specific perspective because smooth vocals are my ~thing~ — I can’t get behind grit and rasp except in very, very exceptional cases. Smooth voices are just so much pleasanter to listen to… rasp grates on my ears most of the time. And she has a nice vibrato. I can hear her voice clearly enough in this audition to discern that she has a good one, which is more than I can say for the previous two auditions. So thumbs up from me :)

  • Lisa

She has a nice voice. Not outstanding. It could be she is really nervous, she looks like she was. I wonder if she just has a lazy right eye, or if she is truly crosseyed tho? I noticed that several times. Has nothing to do with her voice I know. One of my son’s has a lazy eye at times, like when he gets tired.

    This show makes me sick.

They put average vocalists in arenas, packed with a crowd that claps on command and judges that look like paid actors. They add the lights, the dramatic camera work, Simon’s skeptic-turned surprised look and an extra shot of the tearing parents.

They have me scratching my head every week. The day Idol turns into anything like this crapfest, is the day I stop watching.

This^^. I mean, who is allowed to make up their own mind in this equation anymore? Talk about pimping. Sheesh. It’s like EVERY show has to be a SuBo moment, but what do they do later? Will it be a pimp off? From this it looks like the contestant with the best story will win. Talent be damned.

And sorry, Lucy Jones is the name of the CalTech earthquake lady in and I can’t get that visual out of my mind.

  • Thea

These threads on x-factor are weird to me. There are quite a few comments from people who apparently hate the format, the show, Simon on the show (or rather are envious only the UK gets “nice Simon”) and so criticize anyone regardless.

Personally, I do not see a huge difference between the two formats (apart from the fact this year they have an audience at the auditions). And to my “objective” eye (because i am neither American nor British but have lived in both :) ) AI is even more overproduced and over the top than XF. I mean, have you forgotten already all the sad/crazy/inspirational/attention whores back stories they gave us at the beginning of S8?!?!

Having said that, I thought this audition was very good, but the only one worthwile I have seen so far on XF (I liked Danyl but just because I found him good looking- the voice is average).
Her voice is good (not exceptional- but that’s a category for Adam and very few others), but very easy on the ears and she sang well. And I think she has a lot of upside potential, which as we know works well on these shows.

  • springboard

The day Idol turns into anything like this crapfest, is the day I stop watching.

I am from the UK, but I agree and I much prefer AI. The sad thing is, the X factor gets extremely good viewing figures with yesterday episode topping its season 5 equivalent.

  • carmine2008

Anyway, why credit Whitney for this song? If you’re going to sing it low-key, why not just credit the originator, Dolly Parton?

I actually pondered about this myself. Maybe she doesn’t know its originally a Dolly Parton song? Or maybe she doesn’t know Dolly Parton, period. Hahaha.

  • hcpoirot

I had seen so many of reality shows to know that the judges have to singled out and over praise at least one contestant in each episode to make things more interesting though maybe in the reality the vocal not that great.

Come on, even in the music industry right now, how many singers truly had awesome vocals? Most of them are averages, most are not that good, but with good packaging, lots of press , they can sold records.

Anyway, Simon is nicer here and Britain Got Talent cause he will sign one or some of this finalists to his record company.

He is meaner in AI cause he got paid by the TV company to meaner. Isn’t that some of the reason why people tune in to Idol? Look at reality show in US who used British judges or host? The more meaner they are, the rating was quite high and apparently some viewers just like mean British judges or host.

Piers Morgan was successful in American Got Talent. (he is nicer in Britain Got Talent)

Gordon Ramsay act like a total jerk chef in Hell’s Kitchen USA and guess what, the show was in their sixth season.

  • hcpoirot

Say it what you want about cheesy Idol or X Factor. The fact that Idol discover Kelly Clarkson, Daughtry, Carrie U, Jennifer Hudson etc etc cannot be overlook.

And X Factor at least produced Leona Lewis.

  • robie88

It’s really interesting to read the comments about this performance. I’m left with the sense that they highlight the difference between what judges might be looking for, compared to the perceptions experienced by the “average” listener.

I can completely see someone watching this vid and thinking, ‘so what’! But at the same time I can totally understand the judges watching this and concluding that this girl could have amazing potential.

As live performing goes, particularly by someone without much experience, her pitch was quite good. Stylistically she seems to show zero interest in being an imitator, she showed good vocal range with a real difficult song, had an ingratiating personality, and at least to me, I thought she was very attractive. With the confidence that could come with a few more weeks, I could see her doing great. I totally get it.

  • savgal

Thought it was a GREAT audition. She appears to be a very sweet, natural girl, love the lower register of her voice, and the more poignant way she sang it. Really a contrast to the auditions of Danyl and Jamie that have gotten so much attention. And yeah, why does Simon seem so much nicer and more relaxed than he does on AI???

  • shark

I call it “Megan Joy effect”. Except, MJ is way more beautiful. As for the rest, voice is average, pitch problems, not very distinctive’ ¦ I don’t know what’s going on with X-Factor, but from what I’ve seen on this site ‘“ BORRRRRING.

  • kansasfemale

I liked it. I guess I have a different opinion than lots of folks here. I enjoy the format. I enjoy the show. I enjoy Simon’s happier disposition. Yep, there are many back-stories (Daryl comes to mind the most), but they want to develop viewership..it’s a business.

So far, I’ve enjoyed listening to the contestants….it’s interesting to be able (because of the audience and the complete sound system) to close your eyes and really listen to the voices without being distracted by the looks. The only one I wasn’t all that thrilled with was Lloyd (who Cheryl said had the X factor)..and I will still be watching to see who makes it through bootcamp.

I say go-for-it to Lucie, Jade, Stacey, Rozelle and Joseph, Daryl, Danyl, Jamie, and yes even to Lloyd. You all have great voices (esp when compared to some of the contestants we had on AI this year) Raw talent and tons of potential.

  • zoya

Maybe she doesn’t know its originally a Dolly Parton song? Or maybe she doesn’t know Dolly Parton, period. Hahaha.

I was laughing at this because as I first read the comment that she should credit Dolly Parton I was thinking that till I watched idol last year I never before heard of Dolly Parton. I’m a bit musically retarded:)

What I like on X factor: to me, and I seem to be in minority, it seems less scripted. AI seemed tense and rushed sometimes, here I get at least a taste of spontaniosity. Not talking about back stories but the judges and contestants when they are on stage.
I’d really like to know if the standing ovations from the public are scripted or is this just a myth, because I think the energy in the room is great.
This girl, not outstanding, but certainly has potential. And while I can’t decide if I like this kind of auditions, because far less contestants get the chance and it’s only one song, on the other hand, we get to see if they can perform in front of live and tv audience. Let’s take Matt G. Every tour recap sings him praises but he wasn’t really able to adjust to a tv show and show his ability there ( just my opinion).

  • carmine2008

I was laughing at this because as I first read the comment that she should credit Dolly Parton I was thinking that till I watched idol last year I never before heard of Dolly Parton. I’m a bit musically retarded:)

Well, for me, I only discovered Dolly Parton originally sang it, because Syesha Mercado sang it last year during Dolly Parton week. Im assuming that’s also the week you discovered Dolly Parton? ;-)

  • zoya

I not only discovered that Dolly Parton sang that song that week, but I discovered Dolly Parton. “Whitney’s” song was the only one I knew that week.

  • mitchellvii

Um, not to sound harsh, but I don’t get it. She was VERY average and was even flat on the most important notes. Sounded like pretty much any girl you might hear singing in a high school musical to me. She doesn’t sound like she has a trained voice at all.

P.S., Unless you have Adam Lambert-like genius pipes, you DON’T get within 100 miles of this song. You will not just be compared to Whitney, you will be compared to the studio-mixed, auto-tuned Whitney – just isn’t fair.

  • Akatot

I was laughing at this because as I first read the comment that she should credit Dolly Parton I was thinking that till I watched idol last year I never before heard of Dolly Parton. I’m a bit musically retarded:)

You think that’s bad? I’ve never even heard of Katy Perry (much less hear her sing) until the top 3 results night — the first time I watched a results show in a long time. And well, after that performance, I am not rushing to cross my self-imposed boycott of the RIAA.

  • J.S.G.

I thought that was a great audition, scoring big points in the vulnerability factor with the instinct to dial back on an over done talent show classic.

  • Dr. Tracey

I thought she was good, of the three ‘standout’s’ i’ve seen so far I like her the best.
With regards to the Dolly/Whitney song, i’m old and I loved Dolly’s version long before Whitney covered it so it has always ticked me off when I see the song credited to Whitney.

  • Duke

What do you think? The judges found Lucie poignant and vulnerable. I thought she was a little pitchy and lackluster myself.

LoL MJ, you’re always so positive. BUt i actually agree with you this time.

I think she did herself a disservice by picking that song. I dont think her voice is weak at all, but I think that song made her voice sound weak. She’s obviously going to be nervous, and i think that had a decent sized chunk of her pitchy/weak falsetto parts of that song. She’s not as good as the first 2 guys they pimped. But she seems like a sweet, genuine girl and i hope she makes it big.

  • terps

    She sounds a little country

  • terps

    She sounds a little country

  • JJ123

I can see why they liked her so much….yes the vocals were just okay but I think it was all in the way she delivered it. It’s kind of like Miley Cyrus, she has barely an average voice and she’s pretty but not jaw droppingly beautiful but somehow all together it works and has that it factor that draws the kiddies in. This girl is a bit the same, none of her is amazing but together it all works and ends up very likeable.

  • boredinschool

nvmnd, I don’t want to start anything.
Jumping into the conversation here-All reality shows are scripted, some are just scripted differently. It’s up to the watcher to decide which type of scripted shows they like.

  • butte009

Lucie wasn’t the night’s standout IMO. She has a sweetness to her vocals but I’m not sure it’s “pop star” quality. Time will tell…

And yes this is a Dolly song. I hate how people decide that the Diva cover is suddenly the only version. I loved Eric Carmen’s All by Myself but now people refer to it as a Celine song. WTF?

For me 17-year old Jade Fubara was by far the best of the evening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd1iSeN0z6c. She and Danyl are my early frontrunners. They both have potential with some well targeted help during boot camp.

That said… if you want to see the next tweenie favorite check out Lloyd Danials http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kA2t07q9G8 (Skip over the Jason Mraz song – it is really bad but he pulls out a good a cappella song after they stop the fiasco). He’s a good-looking 16 year old and as Cheryl puts it he has the X Factor. Just look at those blue eyes and red cheeks.

    Shepard’s pie… til I die…

  • ShesSoAlive

Watching the parents cry always makes me cry, I’m such a silly sap that way! I like this young lady, she also reminds me of Kristin Stewart in her appearance, and I think her voice is pretty. It will be interesting to see how it develops as she gains confidence, and whether or not she can develop some commanding stage presence. If vulnerability is one of the key points that makes her appealing, then the confidence building will change the dynamic a bit. Some singers (thinking Adam) can pull off vulnerability (Mad World, Tracks of My Tears) and also be completely fierce on stage. Lets see if this singer can pull that off. I think she’s worth watching, I like her.

  • movin2thabeet

The production of this show feels, to me, like a night full of junk food and bad carbs. All hype and drama with very little actual intrinsic value. Seems to be about taking everyday joe and johannas of average talent and making them seem like huge stars. No wonder its so popular. Many like to fantasize about being stars and this show feeds that longing.

Anyways, maybe hype does ultimately sell more records than actual talent. Build people up into a frenzy and they’ll think this person is the chosen one.

I can critique AI until the cows come home, but at least the hype is toned down some. Fans do more than enough hyping on their won. Maybe, on the show, Americans prefer harsh criticisms over doe-eyed awestruck praise. I know that fans generally don’t trust AI judges comments of unrestrained praise and attribute some kind of manipulation scenario whenever it does happen.

For you, for me, for you, Lucie Jones was just a’right dawg.

BTW, I think its the whole package artist thing that has Simon drooling and seeing pound signs.

  • snood199

My Welsh-senses are tingling…she’s ok/good voice. If she can work out the pitch problems she could be pretty good…sounded better than that Jamie fellow to me, on par with or better than Danyl. I still think they’re way-overhyping her, but nature of the beast, eh?

You could have been stating my feelings about what American Idol has become, except an order of ruder/cruder and with much better scripts.

  • becausehelives

These judges have the same expressions every episode. they can save money by replaying the clips for every audition that wows them.

so she was the best of the week. ?. not too impressive but reminds of carrie underwood, country gal who grew into her own later.
still prefer that first guy. Daryl i think.

  • fearbear

She’s better than that Danyl guy at least, I like the quality of her voice.

  • karenw

I wasn’t impressed with this weeks show at all … no one stood out for me.

Lucy has a pleasant enough voice but I found her too little girly, dull and uninteresting .. perhaps it was the song which I think is totally overdone at auditions and on these kind of shows.

Plus she’s not as raw and untrained as the show likes to make out .. apparently she’s been getting vocal tuition from one of Charlotte Church’s singing teachers for the past two years and already has a place at the top UK stage school “Italia Conte” which she auditioned for earlier this year.

  • justantonio

love this show…love the audition process…..this girl was good..has potential to do great things.

  • Sim_B-AWE_tick

The reason these shows exist is 2 fold

    1) One is to use fame to attract an audience of potential emotionally attached CD DVD Buyers.

    2) Use the show as a bouncing board for the most popular commercially viable act.

The judges have to bring to the table 20 to 40 credible acts. Supposedly the rest is up to the audience to pick.

There are 6 attributes that major record companies look for in an artist.
    Celine had all six.

These unknowns have to be proven, and he who has 4 or 5 of the attributes will make it to the top.

So this format is an very well thought out process to make the “finding of talent” entertaining and profitable. For all involved.

  • adamandeva

It was ok. She’s very pretty, likeable. The voice is alright.

The best reality show performance of this song in my opinion had to be Leona Lewis on the X-Factor. No one comes close. It’s not as good as Whitney or Dolly. But it’s pretty amazing.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbuvLJnAysM

  • julieitis

I liked it, but mostly I’m just freaked out because Simon was smiling. Can’t get used to seeing that.

I don’t remember Dolly’s that well, but it was more like her version, wasn’t it?

  • shanz88

To those complaining about how it was credited to Whitney and not Dolly… don’t you think it could probably be because they are in the UK and the Whitney version hit number 1 over there, while the Dolly version didn’t chart? I think that would easily make Whitney the more recognizable name attached to that song over there.

  • Suzanne

You know, she’s fine and all, but they just don’t have the talent over there that we have here. Nothing else explains why Simon throws the bouquets on Xfactor and Britain’s Got Talent way more than for Idol. I mean, if everyone isn’t very good, then I’m sure that this gal sounds like an angel.

  • Reflections On Life

For me 17-year old Jade Fubara was by far the best of the evening http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd1iSeN0z6c.

Agree 100%, Jade’s performance of “And I am Telling You” was nuanced & emotional, not the typical belting of the song, rendering it less angry/crazy and more melancholy. She could become a great mainstream artist with those instincts.

Lucie sounds a bit like Charlote Church Lite. You know, half the calories… If you want Charlotte Church, then listen to Charlotte Church, don’t go for the lite stuff… :???:

  • http://www.fatladysings.us TFLS

I’m beginning to think Dolly should just retire this song – it is SO overdone. Whitney’s version is the yardstick everyone hews to – and even Whitney can’t do Whitney any more. Any time I hear someone say they’re gonna sing it for an audition – I turn and run the other direction.

  • justjude

Lucie Jones is a’ight with very nice vocals and she did do vulnerable and “girlie.” She has “THE PACkAGE” and I do think they are primarily seeing big dancing lb signs floating over her head!!
Jade Fubara on the other hand is the bomb, Stylistically, power, vulnerability Yet you can see a dignified confidence. She should have made them forget many of the earlier acts, but not danyl, because what he lacks in ability he, more than, makes up for with the X Factor

I think we are all cynics now….For AI, Americas got talent, Britians got talent and the X Factor..We would be naive to suppose AI is as pure as the driven snow. PHHUTT!! Much of what is said is scripted as they all have infor sheets in front….Knowing the backstory’s to manipulate or not. Contestants have already been judged to make it to the stage and that page will include the keepers of the gates. I, personally, swear and snarl at Simon when does his, not so clever, attempts at mass manipulation, from the relative safety of my arm chair!!

All that being said, it is still, for me, a thrill to see truley good and, sometimes, great talent arise from the spoilage of our own scorn and cynicism, and the greed of the machine….And so “I, TOO LOVE THIS SHOW…CHEESE’n ALL”!!!!!!

  • Scamp

I liked her. Usually I don’t have the patience to watch and listen to anyone attempting Whitney or Celine. For instance, I don’t like Charice Pempengco’s singing at all. I do like this little lady from Wales. There was an appealing understated, sweetness about her voice.

  • Chai

You know, I don’t think of Whitney when I hear this song because I first heard it sung by Dolly and Linda Ronstadt. When I first heard Whitney’s version, I thought, oh, she’s doing Dolly’s song.

I like Lucy’s version. I think it is truer to Dolly’s version. I liked Lucy’s voice, too, she can go places with her voice.

    We need an X-Factor blog!

  • sbalk017

Lucie was sweet, I like her. She seemed like a normal teenager and I LOVE that she didn’t try to belt that song like EVERYONE ELSE DOES. I don’t know if X Factor likes the singer songwriter type, seeing as I’m American and only see what MJ decides to post, but if she sticks to that vein I can see her being sucessful.

But that Jade girl? Fantabulous. No music, just the audience cheers, a big huge pure voice, and I got chills all over. It wasn’t as powerful as the Jennifer Hudson version, but that isn’t to say it was bad at all. The big stage and the audience hilighted her audition (although the cynics would say that they were emotionally manipulated… but can you be emotionally manipulated by a great (not mediocre at best) voice?)

  • d. b. cooper

    “Song choice is key important.”
    - Paula Abdul

Lucie apparently doesn’t know that, plus she’s garbage.

  • tati

I think she sang ok.. very controled.. No oversinging.. but.. Its hard to listen to a song like this..and not think of the original.. I agree with D.B cooper on the Paula quote.. If she had sung something else..maybe I’d have been more impressed… but right now..she’s just a pretty girl with an ok voice..to me anyway.

  • http://www.luciejonesfansite.co.uk luciejonesfansite

I thought lucie jones was fantastic in the auditions but seemed to lose it a little when the live shows started. Last weekend (24/10/09) was the first time since the live shows begun that she looked back to her best. Not sure if she’s finally got over her nerves but let’s hope so. She was one of the top favourites after the first few shows but seems to have slipped a little, come on girl!!
