Lauren Alaina – Reporter’s Conference Call

AMERICAN IDOL: Lauren Alaina performs at the AMERICAN IDOL finals airing Tuesday, May 24 (8:00-9:00- PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Michael Becker / FOX.

  • Check out Laren Alaina’s post-finale interview with EW HERE.

Lauren’s satellite conference call with reporters begins at 4:30 ET.

Lauren Alaina conference call: She loves Math! And Carrie Underwood, whom  she idolizes. Lauren hopes little girls can look up to her one day the way she looks up to Carrie.

How difficult was it for her to deliver her performances considering her vocal problems? “The show must go on always. The doctor came in and he took really good care of me. I had to go out there and do the best that I can.”

Why does she love country so much? “I was raised on country music. My parents love country music. It’s in my heart.”

Why did she choose not to use her last name, Suddeth, on Idol? “I chose not to use Suddeth because people never pronounce it right and I knew Ryan Seacrest would have a terrible time trying to say my last name. I just went with Alaina because is would be easier and it kind of rolls off the tongue easier. But I will always be Lauren Suddeth. Always.”

Are Lauren and Scotty boyfriend and girlfriend? “No, we’re not. We’re just friends.”

On her weight loss during the show. Did she lose 20 lbs? “Actually, it was 16 lbs in all, maybe. I haven’t been able to work out, because I’ve been super busy getting ready for the finale and everything. But during tour I’m going to work out and I’m going to get to the point where I want to be and not where everyone else wants me to be.”

Did the thought ever cross her mind that she should have waited a couple of years to try out? “No. I feel like people misjudge young people because they think that they’re not ready. I feel like if something’s your dream and you know what you want you should go for it.”

Will she be going to the CMA Festival in June? Have you ever gone as a fan? “I have not been able to make it out to any of the CMA festivals. But I do believe I’ll be there this year. It’s going to be amazing.”

On the contest as a growth process, Did she gain more confidence? “I had a lot of confidence before the show. Once seeing myself on TV and being my worst critic, it threw me back a couple of notches. I thought that was a good thing. I need to realize that there’s always something that you can work on about yourself. The things I didn’t like about myself I worked on the whole time I was on the show and really tried to improve myself. I feel like since there were so many people watching and I could see the outcome. I felt like it was really helpful for me to grow as a person and as an artist.”

Was there a key? Something that really turned the corner for her? “Each week I learned something new. I just put it all togehter and tried to make the best of it.”

What does she want people to know most about her from the things that we could not learn about her on American Idol? “I’m not really a blond (chuckle) People call me a dumb blond. I’m actually really smart and I love to go to school. My favorite subject is math. I like going to school more than anything, probably.”

Has she ever had vocal problems before? “I have actually. Everyone has trouble with their vocals. I think I’m getting a little bit of a cold. Now my nose is a little bit stuffed up and my throat’s hurting pretty bad today. It’s going to be alright.”

What was Scotty whispering to her on Tuesday night at the end of the show? “He told me I was going to win and I said ‘No Scotty, you’re going to win.’”

What was going through her head during the results? “I had a feeling that it was going to be Scotty. I feel like things happen for a reason. God has a different plan for me.”

Did being close to winning make it difficult when she heard the results? “Not really. There’s hundreds of thousands of people out there who would love to be 2nd place. I’m very fortunate to have made it.”

Did she get to meet any of the celebrities at the finale last night? “I met them all. Just being able to sing with Carrie Underwood kind of set off the whole night. She’s amazing.”

Did Lauren pick the song? “No, I think Carrie picked it.”

Was she really happy that Scotty won? What is her friendship with Scotty like? “I will be happy for Scotty forever because we’re great friends. I’ve been saying all along that no matter what happens if it came down to me and Scotty, that I would be happy either way. because we are such great friends. I really mean that, because he is so talented. He’s got the look, he sings the same kind of music that I sing. He loves Jesus. I couldn’t have picked a better person to get second place to but him.”

What does she think about being a role model? Who are some of her role models? “I am a huge country music fan, and there’s so many girls that I look up to, especailly Carrie Underwood. Everyone knows–I’ve shouted that one out loud for awhile now. I met her, and talking with her, I could tell that she genuinely cares that I was there. After we went to the party last night for all the contestants she invited me back to her area to sit down and talk with her. It was amazing to see that someone I looked up to for so long was actually the person that I thought they were. I want little girls and girls my age to feel that way about me when they meet me–to know that I’m actually the way that I’m portrayed on TV. I’m not fake and I don’t want to mislead people as to who I am. I crack jokes a lot but I can be serious too. I cry a lot and everyone knows that. It’s just who I am. I plan on not changing who I am for anything. I want to stay true to who I am and have my little country roots– let it be available for little girls to look up to me. I’ve always looked up to Carrie. It would be the greatest feeling in the world to have some little girl look up to me the way I look up to her.

I just rambled on for about 10 minutes! (laughs).

In that EW video, Lauren’s eyes are incredible, maybe the angle or something.

I have always thought Lauren had incredible eyes – the one thing she seems to have gotten from her father (mom’s coloring but Dad’s shape). She is a beautiful young lady.

I knew Lauren was young, but it never occurred to me that she had 2 years left of school. And Scotty is finished? He must have been younger for his grade, and Lauren older for her grade.

Lauren confirms in this interview that due to not feeling well (probably her vocal chords) she wasn’t on stage very much during the finale. That’s a shame for her. Given her young age, her vocal chords are probably not fully developed, which is another reason why contestants this young shouldn’t be allowed to participate in this type of rigorous singing competition.

  • Coldbluesteel

I believe LA is a Soph and SM is a Jr.

  • Lucy1234

Lauren is such a sweety and yes she has beautiful eyes. Feel bad that she couldn’t perform as much as she would have liked to in the finale but she seems genuinely happy for Scotty and content with coming in 2d.

Nice to see Lauren hanging in with Scotty on Itunes with her single at #3 and her AI compilation album at #6 overall. So far looks like their two fangroups are supporting them both which is refreshing.

  • blmetsfan

Sweet that Lauren got to perform with her idol. Always nice to see. :)

  • Valentin432

Well one thing is clear after that interview, she loves Carrie Underwood lol

  • wolfsbane813

she’s really adorable. i’m still bummed she didn’t win, but i don’t think she really needed it. here’s hoping her and scotty have nice, long, and successful careers. i’ll do my best to support them both, as i love country music. :)

i hope carrie kind of helps her and mentors her along the way. i know how grateful she is for the whole idol process and everything. it would be nice to see her kind of take lauren under her wing.

  • Lucy1234

As a big fan Carrie fan, I am happy that Lauren got to meet her Idol. Carrie is a great role model and a superstar in country music. I hope that Lauren realizes her dream and can one day become a superstar herself for other little girls to idolize. She is on the right track at the young age of 16. What a great opportunity for her. Lauren was probably around 9/10 when Carrie won American Idol.

  • Nina1

If she loves school, she really needs to go back and do it in some kind of normal form. I love that she loves school.

  • Pam

Lauren is just too cute. I think she has a chance of being really successful one day.

  • stwbcross

She loves Math! And Carrie Underwood

    Random much. lol!

I love Carrie Underwood but I hate math. :)

  • fuzzywuzzy

Lauren handled that interview very well. I like how both she and Scotty seem pretty level headed and realistic, confident without being cocky. Good luck to them both.

  • Kirsten

Nice to see Lauren hanging in with Scotty on Itunes with her single at #3

Lauren’s single passed Adele’s about an hour ago to reach #2. She and Scotty are now 1/2 on the iTunes chart. Woo!

  • McCreerian

I hope Carrie takes the both of them under her wing.

Is this typical or rare? I don’t have a clue how these things usually work right after the finale.

  • Ringo

I like the argument against the accusation that she is a dumb blonde: “I’m not really a blond (chuckle).” Oh yes, she is actually smart too. Cuz she likes math and loves school. Huh? I always thought that she was an example of the sweet, likeable ditzy country girl character Kelly Pickler portrays. I don’t think that Lauren is acting (like Pickler clearly was).

  • chicksineggz

I really love the interviews that Lauren and Scotty did so far! They both seem like such sweet kids. And I thought they both came across as really genuine.

  • JEliz

“… and I love to go to school. My favorite subject is math.

I am a very casual follower of AI, and am not a fan, but if I had heard this at the beginning of the season I would have power voted for her EVERY WEEK. What a GREAT role model!!

BTW one can be ditzy, be good at and love math. Not that I am speaking from experience or anything. :-)

Coronation songs have never done that on iTunes before (that I have seen and I’ve been watching since season 5. Prior to that, the singles sold via iTunes were quite small. Up until 2006 (Season 5) you only needed to sell 100K digitally to reach Gold (now 500K))

With Lady Gaga with new songs on the charts and Adele’s unstoppable Rolling in the Deep, I think it is amazing and very good news for both Scotty and Lauren. I suspect Universal is going to be more than happy to give them those record label contracts to sign and although it says that Lauren will get double if she records an album, I have no doubt the she will get the opportunity to record one.

I am no expert in any way on these matters but I remembered there was a big todo on iTunes with David Cook. So I dug up an old article from Rickey’s site where David’s coronation song sat atop iTunes. However, I’m not sure how long the song stayed there.

I’m seeing the Kelly meets Kellie personality in LaurenA a lot more now that she’s outside the show and it looks good on her.

LaurenA: Actually, it was 16 lbs in all, maybe. I haven’t been able to work out, because I’ve been super busy getting ready for the finale and everything. But during tour I’m going to work out and I’m going to get to the point where I want to be and not where everyone else wants me to be.”

I truly hope she’s as firm about this as she sounds. Good for her for standing strong and I hope she doesn’t let the vultures who pick apart every female’s appearance get to her.

Lauren was probably around 9/10 when Carrie won American Idol.

On ET, Carrie was interviewed yesterday on the red carpet and she said,
“It is actually 6 years ago to the day that this was my night. And 6 years ago, Lauren was 10 …(sad face by Carrie, LOL); so that was kind of depressing.” Carrie laughed.

I saw the EXTRA interview with Mario Lopez, and Lauren was adorable.

  • Kirsten

I am no expert in any way on these matters but I remembered there was a big todo on iTunes with David Cook. So I dug up an old article from Rickey’s site where David’s coronation song sat atop iTunes.

I was referring to the coronation songs being number 1 AND 2 on the the iTunes charts (sorry if it wasn’t clear). This is a Lauren thread and I wanted to point out how well her single was doing. Kris and Cook (Idol winners) also got their singles to number 1, but I’ve never seen a runner-up get to number 2 on iTunes before (granted, I’ve only been watching since S5)

While Clay did outsell Ruben, that was with CD singles. iTunes was launched in April of that year and I don’t know if they released the singles to iTunes. Billboard didn’t even start reporting digital sales (or including them in the Hot 100 calculation) until 2005. Digital sales only really took off in 2006.

Archie didn’t get a coronation in S8, so he couldn’t have had his be number 2 to Cookie’s number 1. Kat, Adam and Crystal did not reach number 2 on the chart (we can argue about what was Blake’s coronation single, but it didn’t reach #2 whatever it was). I know Lee didn’t even make that high and I’m pretty sure Jordin didn’t either.

Sum it up: Lauren can be very proud of how her song is doing.

  • stwbcross

^^ Thanks for setting me straight Kirsten.

  • BM2587

Kind of a head scratcher how she doesn’t think people could pronounce Suddeth. 2 syllables ain’t that hard lol

  • CRB

Suddeth sounds a little bit like an abbreviation for “sudden death” and I can understand why she went the double first name route.
